Riding aboard the Amtrak train from San Diego to Seattle as first class passengers. We booked the roomette which gives you first class access to the lounge, and includes your food. 3 meals per day, you have a host that makes your bed for you ad everything. This was 2 full days and one night aboard the train. The cost for both of us was about $850.00. Flying is cheaper, but this was such a great experience. If we drove it would have cost close to the same. We rode the Surfliner, and then transfered to the Coast Starlight Express.

Great video on what it's like to travel by train. Got a good sense on what someone could expect to see and do while riding the train. Only question I was left with was whether or not they have hot coffee available?

Oh. Yea. Sorry about that. Yes they do have coffee available. But only if you want some. Me,,, I don't like too much coffee.

Pacific Surfliner (that first train you were on) had a really nice cafe car compared to other Amtrak services. Not that they are bad per se it’s a train. Just saying

They were in a Transitional Sleeper Car which was originally built for the train staff. In an effort to generate more revenue, Amtrak has been selling Roomettes in these cars. All rooms are Roomettes in Transitional Sleeper Cars.

I’m about to do the Texas Eagle to the Coast Starlight to the Empire builder loop around the country! Love Amtrak!

Oh man. That will be awesome. I'm not sure how long I could stay ON the train for that one. Maybe if there was a layover or a break somewhere. Have a great trip.

I like your enthusiasm & energy. I've taken The Coast Starlight since the '80's & the view from the windows looking West is incredible every time. You were assigned a Roomette in a car (Transitional Sleeper) with only Roomettes that was originally intended for the train crew. My guess is Amtrak has been looking for ways to generate revenue. At first train crews didn't like the idea of sharing space with paying customers, but many have left or retired many years ago & new employees don't know the difference.

Yea. Our hostess person was just in the roomette just a few doors down. There were a lot of empty rooms as well.

Why did you walk to the platform in L.A.? Sleeping car passengers in the lounge get taken to the train on the golf cart. No need to walk and have to hurry unless you choose to do so. It was enjoyable to see the Amtrak roomette experience through the eyes of someone doing it for the first time. My husband and I are definitely not new at it, but we still feel that sense of excitement we don’t quite get for other modes of transportation.
@HeyItsTim

@amya8412 we took the cart to the lounge, but for some reason I wanted to show my daughter the station, we actually walked around a little and went out the front door, just to see the outside of the station. Yea, I was a little excited. I've spent many rides in the coach seats.

Yes. They do. The fat birds thing is a line from Mary Poppins. Michael wants to use his money to buy feed for the birds and the old man's "fiddlesticks boy. Feed the birds and what do ya got. Fat birds"

I saw the fancy coffee machine when I was at the Portland Metropolitan Lounge Yesterday. They allow anyone with business class on cascades (our local surfliner) to use the lounge as well as coast starlight and empire builder sleeping car passengers.

What was each of your favorite meals on the sleeper train? How many hours of uninterrupted sleep did each of you get on the sleeper train?

Audrey liked the Beyond Burger she had for lunch. I liked the breakfast quesadilla. Oh and I liked the grilled cheese. I slept pretty good. When the train stops, it wakes you up. I don't remember waking up on this trip. Maybe it didn't stop. I think Audrey woke up more.

This video is twice as long as it should be. How many minutes were wasted talking about coffee or some other pointless discussion? If you post a travel video, it should be about the part of the trip that might be helpful or even relevant in some way to the people who are watching it. I am not even sure why you are posting a video of this trip, since you obviously know nothing about Amtrak travel. Maybe you should have taken some Amtrak trips first and learned about the experience before posting a video, so you could have passed along some useful information to others. Watching you drag your luggage downstairs because you didn't know that you were supposed to keep it in the racks on the first floor tells me everything I need to know about your vlogging skill.

Trying to take full sized luggage into a *roomette?* Rookie. 😉 The ultimate bucket list excursion, would involve every single long haul route, and depending on your start/end point, it's not terribly complicated to draw up an itinerary. Just add an overnight (or two) between segments. Amtrak is scenic as can be, and the food isn't terrible, but you will need some "shore leave" to properly stretch out and switch up your food...not to mention, some connections are too tight for the same day.
@HeyItsTim
@HeyItsTim 8 дней назад
@ToABrighterFuture that sounds great. I'm a very busy bee kind of person and I figured out real quick that a train ride is certainly relaxing. So, doing every long haul sounds AWESOME.

@@HeyItsTim It's not cheap, especially if you go top city and book Bedrooms on some of the longer/more scenic routes. You'd guarantee views on both sides with a Bedroom, and the en suite can be quite handy, but great oogly moogly, does it add up. One angle you might consider, if you made it a series: collecting stories from your fellow passengers. So, dining car, Sightseer, bring your camera, and give your fellow passengers some time to shine, if they agree.
