My Antenna Setup for Shortwave and Mediumwave Radio
Hey gang...covering a bit of old ground here today, but I thought it might be helpful to make a somewhat concise video detailing my antenna setup, from the trees in my backyard to my radio, so to speak.
Most of the components of this random-wire antenna setup (wire, coax, connectors) can be found at www.universal-r....
Here's a link to "lowbander," the seller of the 9:1 transformer:

Nice setup! I use dollar store 100' rolls of twist tie wire (green) for my HF antenna. It's so cheap and works great! Of coarse it is for receive ONLY!!!

Nice setup. The only concern I would have is lightning. Any thoughts about an arrester in the feed line ? I live in a similar setting & had an oak tree not 100 feet from the house taken out by a massive bolt a couple of years ago, so I am cautious.

Yep...lightning is always a concern. I keep the antenna unplugged when not in use. The RCA connectors make for quick and easy connection/disconnection.

@@Radiodog Not intending to do your worrying for you, but I feel if a lightning bolt can jump from a cloud to earth, it will have no problem jumping across my lab to ground. I just do not want to be present if that happens.

A random length end fed with a 9:1 unun is non resonant. It will work but if you add a simple tuner you can peak your signal. Since it’s for receive only any size variable capacitor can be used.

Some useful information there. It can get confusing with all the different connectors for newcomers and it often gets overlooked, the splitter box is a great idea too. I made one of those coupling loops after watching one of your old videos and it’s surprising how well it works for what it is 👍🏼

question, if I purchase one of Lowbanders coax antennas, is there such a thing as an adapter from the coax to a 3.5 plug? I only have one radio to utilize the connection. Thank you!

Back in the day ('63) as a freshman at Purdue I brought my Hallicrafters S38-E SW radio to the dorm. What to do for an antenna? I tied a stone to the end of a 50 ft roll of (probably 20 ga) magnet wire and tossed it high into a huge oak tree nearest my 3rd floor window. At the window I broke the line to the radio with a 40 mF capacitor for some reason (maybe I thought it would be a lightning arrester). It worked fine. One very foggy morning I looked out and saw dozens of similar wires tangled in the tree like spider webs. Apparently many before me had the same idea. Thanks for bringing back the memory.

Did the rest have (lightning arresters as well?)😂😂😂 Great story. I had a good visual of just a tree with dozens of wires hanging out o it

Thank you for this! I've watched it twice - as a novice I have to let it sink in to absorb it all. Please forgive my ignorance. So you use this rig not just to listen to SW, but also transmit over SW? If so, over what distances? Without need of repeater(s)? I see you created "A" and "B" connections. Is there a setup where you would need both in use at the same time? Seems like that would create problems. Are you able to use your base station as a sort of repeater for your HT while out and about? All very interesting, thanks again! ATB!

Hey, thanks for the comment. I should have clarified: this is a receive-only antenna...no transmit. I might need to change the title to make that clearer.

@@Radiodog Thanks for quick reply! It is undoubtedly my ignorance at play here. Still find the information interesting. You didn't mention it, but it must have been quite the job to string 85 feet of wire through the trees!

Also...the extra antenna outputs (labeled 1 and 2) give me a bit of flexibility. Often, I will have the loop antenna (for MW) connected at the same time I have a wire connected to the SW terminals. This doesn't seem to cause too many problems, though sometimes there's extra noise introduced. Sometimes I'll connect 2 different radios to the same antenna to do a comparison. Pretty simple to tell the difference it makes (by unplugging one and listening for the difference.) It's usually minimal.

I’m confused about the lowbander. Most videos show running a long-wire from outside right to the radio. What does the lowbander do? Also, does it matter what direction you run the long antenna wire (North to South, East to West, etc) Thank you for your help.

9:18 I've tried that with my AN-200 and it never worked for me. Maybe it's just that it doesn't work with a MLA-30 being plugged into it.

What do you think about this? 300 feet of insulated army field telephone wire draped in the trees going down to (transformer - like yours ) than to coax underground to house than to the RCA/mono extension (like yours but no box) than to my Tecsun 680?

Your co-ax is RG58 by the looks of it.. RG8 is 0.41 inches thick. The 75 ohm RCA cables should not be a bother for receive only.

Tom...I used to disconnect my outdoor antenna that fed my 1937 Philco 3 band floor model radio, and after seeing this vid I built 2 of the loops that loop you showed, one to my un/un like yours and one across the screw terminals on the Philco...when positioned close together same performance as when connected direct but now no worry that lightning will destroy the front end coils of my radio . Medium and 2 shortwave bands work great even though the radio is 84 years old....thanks for a super detailed video. Frank in Connecticut

I made an AM inductive loop with a 16 inch pizza box and it blows the AN-200 away. I made a demo video using it with the Tecsun PL-660. I just ordered a solar panel that came in a box over four ft across and ordered another tuning capacitor. The 16 inch loop actually improves reception with the CCrane EP PRO and Sangean PR-D4W which was surprising, so I expect my next loop will be ridiculously powerful.
