A close look at the Arc'teryx Alpha SV hardshell. Fit, features and how to layer with it. This is the top of the line hardshell from Arc'teryx. Built with 100D 3L most durable GoreTex membrane, this jacket is made for rough, rugged, cold, windy, and snowy conditions in the mountains. With it's two high chest pockets, it is designed with climbing in mind. It doesn't get much better than this!

People buy this jacket to walk the dog & then complain about the pockets & the fit. It's primarily for climbing: properly sized it fits very well layered with your arms extended over your head & the Napoleon pockets are accessible wearing a pack & harness. The fabric is durable & the weight is less than many other jackets in the same category. It's definitely not the "heaviest" jacket in the Arc lineup.

This is exactly the information I needed to hear... the sizing charts from Arcteryx are generic and do not change from style to style thank you for this I will be sizing down for my SV purchase.

Glad it helped. I guess being a regular fit it's a bit larger than normal. It's definitely bigger than my other XL Hardshells. But if you're wearing heavy layers under it, it's good.

I’m moving up from a Theta, and I found it tight in the collar, especially when zipped up. I have a thin mid layer (700d?) but if I have a base layer and a thin sweater underneath I’m not very comfortable. I had a M Beta, and went up to a L Theta, now considering a L Alpha. I have put on a few dad pounds during this progression but not significant, about 15 pounds, but I’m wearing it mostly in the midsection and the chest. Do you suppose the L size would be adequate? I’m getting a warranty replacement on the Theta, and finally moving up to the Alpha that I always wanted, but was never able to justify buying.

the upper placement of the pockets is because it doesnt interfere with your harness and it doesnt interfere with the lumbar supports on your pack

@@meandmyjackets They are gold, thank you so much! I bought the Alpha SV in XL last night after 2 beers. :D I am 6,2 (190 cm) and weigh appr. 180 lbs (90 kgs). I want to combine it with the Aclima FleeceWool V2 Jacket because I love merinowool. I already have the Arcteryx Rush in XL and that fits perfectly. Hopefully, the SV does, too. If not, I need to lift harder in the gym :D

it may be because arcy has a fitted, regular, and expedition sizings and a large fitted and a medium regular may be about the same dimensions a medium expedition will fit over a large regular fit even though not with many layers underneath

I find when I have the hood up the gap between my mouth and the jacket is too much , even after cinching of all the cords? Any Ideas ? Also what jacket would you recommend that combines insulation and waterproof...need it for wet , cold weather in Scotland
@meandmyjackets
@meandmyjackets 9 месяцев назад
The Alpha SV is just cut larger for heavier layers. I guess that it depends on what you're wearing under it. As far as a waterproof insulated jacket, I would say something like the Beta or Rush Insulated jackets.

Is this jacket suitable for the European winter where minus temperatures are a maximum of minus 5 degrees?
@meandmyjackets
@meandmyjackets Год назад
The Alpha SV is a heavy duty hardshell that will block the wind and keep you dry from rain, sleet and snow. However, it is not insulated at all, so you will need a nice warm insulated jacket under it to keep you warm. This is just a protective shell to keep you dry and block the wind. This Alpha SV is designed for climbing, but can be used for anything, but if your just wearing it as a hardshell around town in cold weather, you probably don't need something this durable and heavy. The Beta AR or LT may be a better choice. If you're wearing a heavy layer under it, then the regular fit of the Beta AR may be a good choice. If you want the ultimate in durability, the Alpha SV is as good as it gets.

Hi Chris, may be you can help me? I bought an Arcteryx jacket shell 17-20 years ago. It is still pretty good and waterproof for the amount I have used it, but slowly coming apart. I am looking for the same jacket. There is nothing in the jacketI can see like ar/sv/beta etc. I think they only had one version? Which jacket do you think might be closest. Thanks!
@meandmyjackets
@meandmyjackets Год назад
I really don't know what was available back then, but I would think that over the years the jackets would only have gotten better. So it just depends on what activities you will be using it for, and your budget. The Alpha's are more for rock and ice climbing as there pockets are designed for cross chest access. The betas are more common everyday use. All are great. What are you using it for?

Hey! I was wondering about the ”regular fit” in other jackets. Thinking of buying a Beta AR which is also a regular fit and wondering if the cut is similar to this SV, as the Beta is meant for more general use. Very good review about the SV!👍
@meandmyjackets
@meandmyjackets Год назад
I don't have the Beta AR, so I can't say for sure, but I would think that it would be similar to the Alpha SV as they are both a regular fit. For me, the Beta FL which is a trim fit still has enough room under it to layer. The Beta AR would most likely be cut a bit larger than the Beta LT or FL. I think that the advantage of the regular fit would be it's ability to fit over as many layers as you want, and heavy layers if necessary. It just depends on what you will use it for.

I have the Beta AR, it is slightly roomier in fit and look the beta is also shorter in the body which I don’t like, i have the alpha sv it’s a better all round jacket, also have a look at the Fjallraven Bergtagen shell jacket reviews that’s a way better jacket than the SV or AR, much softer fabric so no crunch as you walk and even more durable against the weather

hello, very nice video! May I ask if I can put on a S size Alpha SV over a M size Cerium SV hoodie?
@meandmyjackets
@meandmyjackets Год назад
I'm not sure that the S alpha will fit over the M cerium SV. The cerium SV is a pretty full jacket. If it was a cerium LT I would say that it would probably fit over it, but the SV is much bigger. My XL Alpha SV fit over my XL cerium SV nicely, so I would hesitate on downsizing the alpha to fit over the fuller pieces. The alpha downsized would fit fine over an atom LT or Proton FL,... lighter layers

Gore-Tex approved anything is a complicated process. A company like Arc'Teryx, Pantagonia, NorthFace etc.. needs to design the garment and then submit it to W.L.Gore to approve the design and test it's waterproofness before they will sell them the Gore-Tex material for them to manufacturer the garment. A 3 layer Gore-Tex jacket requires tedious time consuming manual application of the seam tapes.

I hear what you're saying. If I was to buy another, for lighter layers, I'd get the Large instead. But It actually fits well over those heavy layers when it's really cold. Plus I have a couple other hardshells that fit better. But for me it fills a purpose when it's really cold.
