I think there are good families who just need help due to their work schedules, but there are many who abuse their staff.

The pay is not high but in return there are opportunities open for au pairs. It also depends a lot on the host family to have great journey or not. But mostly, it’s also your attitude and your way of life too.

I’ve gone through something similar, except in an academic setting. We both left for good reason. The future is replete with opportunity. You’re such a strong person!

Thank you for watching. I don’t want my video to scare you from doing au pair, it should be your guide and learn from it. Au pair experiences are not the same, I have friends who had an amazing experience and even after my own experience I would still recommend it to someone because from it I learned so much and it made me stronger as a person, I met amazing friends from different countries that had my back until the end. My advice to you, take your time to match with the family, when you get there enjoy the journey cos you might have a good experience, if it doesn’t work out it’s ok you have an option to rematch. If it doesn’t work out after rematch, it’s still ok because you gave your all and were brave enough to try.

I agree, when you apply they promise to protect you and you gonna have this amazing experience, you’ll feel like part of the family but that’s not how families treats us. I was feeling the same way too, cheap labour. The only thing we can appreciate is how it changes us and we learn a lot about ourselves. When I started, I was shy and couldn’t stand up for myself but I came out strong and now I can speak up if I’m not happy about something.

I’m guessing you’ve never been anywhere else. I have family in India. I understand why people would do anything to get here. The privilege and entitlements, the infrastructure, social services, access to medical care, etc that we have here in America, is far more than many other people in 3rd world countries could even imagine. Educate yourself.

Au pair is really not easy, I also always say I wouldn’t want anyone to experience what I went through. I’m sorry you had a crazy family, but we are strong now because of them.

Thank you😊. Au pair is a really great program if both host and au pair has good intentions. From the point of an au pair I’d say that being in a different country with people you don’t know really well is not easy. So making your au pair comfortable and feeling like the part of the family is important. The first month is usually not easy on Au pairs. So my advice is that while you’re doing interviews, be open and be honest when au pairs ask questions, Could be about your expectations. Understanding that au pair is a cultural exchange program is really important, so on days when your au pair is off allow her to explore and make friends. If au pairs feel cared for and a part of the family, everything will flow naturally. Take your time doing the interviews cos not all au pairs are good too. If you’re not sure about someone, possibly it’s not going to work. Communication is key, make your au pair feel safe to come talk to you about anything. That helps so you know if there’s something going on or if they are not happy about something. If you’re not happy about something too, voice it out right away.

but the family never cared for her mental well being and the man of the house was sexually harassing her. She had every right to leave and that family never realised that they had a gem in their presence. Too bad, their loss!

I am disappointed regarding your response to this poor woman's plight. The lack of respect and professionalism demonstrated by the host husband working in the medical field with vulnerable people , he is a danger to all women.,The child with special needs, who required a trained nurse , the mother as a trained nurse should have carried out her own nursing assessment based on the information given by the specialist, inorder to ensure that the childs needs were being met ,also to avoid any safeguarding issues. If the mother was really a nurse , she would have realised from the start that this lady could not take care of her sick child .This mother was prepared to compromise the safety of the child and the nanny . The nanny was lucky to get away from that family before anything could happen, landing her in jail.If anything bad had taken place, causing the child harm, the mother would blame the nanny , whilst failing to acknowledge her failings both as a mother and a nurse.

Hi Mvelo. AUPAIR SA its an online agency. My friend used LITTLE SUNSHINE offices in La Lucia you pay them about R200 but it's legit. You can also search online in terms of how much per hour and the requirements. Good luck ❤

I’m glad to know that you rematched with the best family. Some families just don’t deserve to have au pairs. Crazy that after I left they were given another au pair that stayed with them few months and left, she reached out to me asking why I left the family. Things they were doing to me, they did it to her too. Me and that au pair didn’t even know each other to make this up.

They tell me that they love me every night before I go to bed. So I am way more to them than an employee. They are truly my family and they tell me every single day that I will forever be theirs.

People’s experiences are different, I didn’t share to discourage anyone😊. You can still do it, but just know your experience might be good or bad. I have friends who had the best host families that even helped me when mine wasn’t good to me.

Thank you. It was a black family, it wasn’t racism. They have money and treat people like nothing. Especially coming from Africa, they thought I was poor.

Unfortunately it’s not illegal . The laws for Au pair jobs are sickening . Agencies are making money from this girls whilst they get paid peanuts .It’s literally disgusting to pay someone 200 dollars to take care of a child who needs that kind of care .

@@tgondo I respect your comment so I did some research. I found that the situation with au pairs is weird and unfortunate because technically the au pair is to be paid the legal minimum rate, but the host family can charge the au pair up to 40% of their pay for room and board. The host family can reduce the au pair's wages before she receives her paycheck. Not cool. That is slave labor, imo.

Is there au pair agencies in Nigeria ?

Right I would never use these agencies . I would have an independent contact that agrees on hours etc and covers flights etc . Especially if I have to pay high upfront costs to the agency . I would rather use that money to pay fairly.
