Owner of a pet dog myself. That first story is just a sad reminder that some people should not be allowed to own dogs if they won't care for them properly. Hope your doggie was not too traumatized. Stay Safe !

I've been fighting a "family" trying to get another dog. They had theirs put down during covid. Dogs and cats are not objects but family members. Pets like me, for my cat all need prayers to be better.

Those are what we call rez dogs. There is a whole different cultural idea of how dogs should be treated on the reservation. We have a rez dog we raised from a pup because my kids wanted to rescue it. It loves people, but hates other dogs. If we had left it at the family's house on the reservation it likely wouldn't have lived to be 1.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. Monument Valley is a magical place and I've had some of the best experiences ever in my many times there. But you DO need to be aware of some of the undercurrents. Monument Valley is Navajo Tribal Land, but mostly the Navajo do not profit from it. Most tourists come, stay at the non-native owned Gouldings Lodge which has lately been very disrespectful of Navajo land and sensibilities (you'll find out about that at the Navajo run museum). Navajoland has a lot of poverty and it galls a lot of the residents to see tourists skim in and out with no respect or profit to the owners of the land. What is key is to spring for a Navajo run tour. You will be taken off the beaten path by a Native guide who will explain about Navajo cosmology, history, life on tribal land, and some of the issues facing modern day Navajo. It's also important to try to gas up at Native run gas stations and stay at the Navajo run hotel and buy from the tribal run art store. Every tour I've been on has been different and some involved meeting members of my guide's family and learning about their traditional sheep herding. Yes, this can all add up, at least compared to free camping on BLM land and doing your own wandering. But consider it a "tax" for the hardworking people who have been stewards of this land through many decades of hardship. I hope you give Monument Valley another chance. It is truly a special place.
@robbby4011
@robbby4011 Год назад
Throw money around, and people will treat you better? Bull... If they want tourists, they need to be tourist friendly. That does not always mean "respect or profit".
@LeftCoastCowgirl
@LeftCoastCowgirl Год назад
@@robbby4011 that’s the problem. They don’t necessarily want tourists. But a tourist infrastructure was set up in their midst without their permission. At one point they were able to claw back sovereignty of most of the area, but the Gouldings complex still draws in crowds. In the last decades, the Navajo have been attempting to accommodate the tourism they can’t stop in a way that doesn’t erode their culture or hurt the land, and benefits the people who are protecting the land. If you go to their sacred place, it’s best to respect and honor that. I
@LeftCoastCowgirl
@LeftCoastCowgirl Год назад
@@robbby4011 I would also suggest that perhaps you should NOT go to Native Nations. If you want multimedia theaters, shuttle buses, and stores full of tourist trinkets, go to one of the overly commercialized National Parks like Zion. The Navajo and other Nations are trying to craft a different kind of experience for a different kind of tourist, those who are curious about their culture, respectful of their land, and don't need a load of tourist honky-tonk to amuse them. When you go to a gas station, you enrich the individual owner (and the Chevron, Shell, or Texaco company). When you seek out a Tribal gas station, you may actually pay less as they don't have to charge certain taxes. But the stations are run by the Tribe and the profits support Native schools, health clinics, and infrastructure. You pay the same or less, but your positive impact is so much more. If you've traveled all the way to Monument Valley or Canyon de Chellys, why not hire a Native guide who will get you into restricted areas and enhance your experience? Otherwise, why the hell go there if you just want to stand on an overlook for five minutes. If you want a souvenir, why buy from Gouldings where they take a hefty cut (and where real Native artwork is interspersed with cheap mugs and made in China feather festooned tat that has nothing to do with the Navajo? Why not walk a few steps to the Tribal run store and museum where the artwork is of a higher quality (often a better price) and the Native artists get a bigger cut? If you really have no money, there are plenty of roadside stands where Tribal members sell their wares. I once bought a beautiful rock that a nine year old girl had carved with pictures of wild horses. She wouldn't take more than $5 for it, but she spent half an hour telling me about her plans to be an artist when she grew up. I still have that rock as a paperweight on my desk and I smile every time I see it. $5 for ten years of smiles is a great bargain in my book. Seek out the unique experiences on Tribal land and don't expect Disneyland. You will leave with great memories.

I hope you get a refund! Once you do get a response, I suggest letting HipCamp know the circumstances. They need to tell people they will be 15 feet from the owners home with out of control dogs running loose and barking. The owners not responding while you were there and then saying their dogs fight with each other all the time is lame. Little One could have been injured plus the stress of listening to the dogs. I live in the Mojave Desert and locals that have been here for 30+ years say this is the wierdest weather for spring. It was the coldest March and now April with the wildest winds nonstop for days and weeks. Climate change in the desert is real. The snakes came out and then disappeared again. It should be 85 to 90 degrees by now but its only about 60 degrees at noon. I'm sure its the same in the Monument Valley area. I heard the wild flowers are blooming in Arizona.

Those people should have their dogs locked up! There was no reason for that. Hopefully Hip Camp will take them off their list and give you your money back! 🤞🏼👍🏻 as far as the restaurant goes, there’s no excuse for being a downer. I usually ask them if they are having a ruff day, or if they’ve had to work more hours than they wanted, OR if they had a mean customer. Now that usually works to get a smile out of them because they know I care. You worked in a bar….you know what I’m saying. Anyway, hopefully the rest of your time goes smoothly. The fact that the owners of the four dogs didn't came out to investigate when all the trouble started is a clear indication they were probably trying to scare you off and I'm guessing they probably release the dogs everytime a new camper arrives hoping they will leave. Of course it makes absolutely no sense why they would even have a campsite only 15 feet from a private residence, what kind of zoning law is that? Hope the little one is okay, Jeepsy!

I rescued a puppy in Northern CA. He was appropriately 7-8weeks old. He was found at a remote campground. The host said he appeared on a little knoll one morning. Long story, short...he came from a Native American man's property. I was told he doesn't treat his dogs as pets, they stay outside and keep predators away. They inbred and became an issue chasing wildlife. I've had my pup since he was a handful. He is not a good pet. His prey drive and resource guarding are a full time job. So...if you are in Native Land, it may be the culture? Idk but open to more info

Miss Sarah, The decades and centuries of rain, and wind have formed Beautiful features few enjoy for their strength. The two most powerful forces on our planet are wind and water, being amazed at what beauty and destruction they can make is a wonder. Being optimistic can be very hard when wearing wet weather gear, but I try to get out and watch. As an avid snowshoe camper I try to, not let weather dictate my activity. On a cold morning in a "hot" tent waiting for the heat to rise can dampen a whole day if I let it. One time out with my daughter (her learning to Xcountry ski) we built a fire to season a new cast iron Dutch oven. The cans of beef stew we threw in as it cooled was some of the best I've ever eaten. With all my Love for you I cannot guide you to see the positive but please know you are in my prayers Sweety. I am very happy LIL ONE is safe and has a terrific Mommy. Winter is harsh and the land is carved by this process. Valley of the Gods (Colorado) and Monument Valley are complete extremes on a scale for campers! And for your energy of one smile, may not be enough energy to deflect the 99 people that were in a bad mood and took it out on that waitress on that Waiter on that store person. I think sometimes we look to receive positive energy, when I believe the fact is we sent out that positive energy no matter what comes back to us. We are the light that shines away the darkness. We are the joy that shines away the sadness. We are the peace that shines away the war. Never let the outside world dictate to you how you should feel rather dictate to the world how you want to feel and then let everyone else enjoy your vibe if they're so open to receive it. I now always suggest to people to stay in Page Arizona instead. Just drive to Monument Valley from Page instead of staying there in Monument Valley. You can see pretty much everything in 1 day. So sorry you had such a bad time of it Suggest anyone with an experience of bad dog owners, report them, it certainly would be a difficult decision if they have your credit card information or personal information however. You are such a kind person I am sorry you had a horrid southwestern visit.

I've heard that Utah can be standoffish from friends, who were Mormons but not native to Utah. They were glad to leave.

We visited Monument Valley a few times in the 1950's. Very primitive then. I still have an 8x4 foot hand woven rug my parents bought for me in 1957 at a trading post. Cost was $45.

You might never find a more beautiful campsite as you had. It was the best I've ever seen. To bad your fridge broke. Glad you told people about the terrible one! I can't believe those people didn't care about their little dogs. My boxer went after a little dog once. I tackled him an was loosing my grip. I was on the ground an grabbed him by the balls an was able to pull him back. Had no idea if he would bite me for that but thank goodness he didn't! He turned his goofy giant head an gave me the funniest look! Haha i got to his collar again. An layed on him till the owner got her little dog. I'm only 5'3" an he fought every dog he came across. Got him when he was 5. Barely knew him but his owner died on my birthday so that was my present an his death present. He had never been in a house so the first thing i had to do is pull him across the kitchen floor by his collar. Feet sliding all over on the linoleum but when he got to the wood floor he could walk without sliding. Never tried to bite me. My dog Rosebud weighed more than him an she was a fighter too. Took me hours of holding him up by the collar an putting my foot out to keep Rosebud from attacking him. Success! I did it!!!! Both were very protective towards me. If that little dog you saw didn't get help from the owners i would have took it away from them straight to the police station. Sorry got carried away on that story. Peace

Beautiful pictures. My experience was similar but not as bad. I loved Valley of the Gods and also had high expectations for Monument Valley. Monument Valley was way too touristy for me. I'm glad I skipped camping there. Next time it's only Valley of the Gods for me - that place is Heaven and where lots of nice spirits live. :)

Oh My Goodness, that was crazy. I can honestly say that there are some people that don’t take care of their animals. I moved to Kayenta it’s atlease 20 miles from Monument Valley I was so miserable there I do have relatives there. I ended up moving to Phoenix and lived there for 10 years. I moved back to Minnesota a couple months ago I’m so so sorry you had bad experiences there. I feel you.

There are dogs on the Rez everywhere that are not leashed or tagged and that is a major problem with the Navajo Nation.

Sorry you had a bad experience there. I try to take a photo trip once a year to some place amazing. One year it was to the SW including Monument Valley which I enjoyed. But, the people weren't very friendly. If you are still there, make sure you go to the Forrest Gump pull over. Makes a great photo of the road leading into Monument Valley, And if you will be around Horseshoe Bend, you can park then walk up to the top and photograph the canyon below. The worst place for me that trip was Las Vegas.

Visit again -- in warm weather. Being on Navajoland in the winter is not good unless you are a pro at traveling in the winter. The weather, unfriendly people (a lot are deeply introverted). I think MV has become very commercialized. It is what it is. You can't blame it on the Dine' people (Navajo) as people can be very rude or standoffish anywhere you go. I've learned to not take it personally, as their behavior is a reflection upon themselves! I'm Dine', myself but have lived off the reservation since I was 18. My husband is non-Native. He is more extroverted than me. My husband and I went in Dec 2021. It was very cold and the restaurant was closed. We had to drive to Gouldings to get something to eat. This was during Covid and it made for a lot of people anxious about visitors, etc., Be safe. If I lived on the rez, I would invite you to camp in my back yard for free. God bless you and keep you in Him.

Some people just shouldn't be animal owners! Ignorance is bliss for many unfortunately. Glad you and little one were ok. It's unfortunate that some people just " don't get it". Lots of people in the world are very unhappy right now because we really are on the verge of a possible depression. Buisness owners must be suffering worse than others I guess.😢 But, just bless those poor unhappy people and let them go.!❤🌷🙏 I send positive thoughts and lots of protective white light ALL around you and yours!!!🌞🦋

Dear Sarah, this is my first time watching your channel. I just came here from your interview with Bob Wells. I left a comment for you there. I hope you posted a very detailed negative review of the backyard "campground" with the aggressive dogs. I wish you had called the police while you were still there, reporting them for animal cruelty. I hope to be part time on the road within the next few years. One of the things I consider a prerequisite is installing video surveillance on each side of the vehicle I choose (most likely a cargo van). I hope you get cameras too. I've met people who are kind, and I've met people who are super rude. I try to be nice anyway. It's rare that I (verbally) put the mean ones in their place. I do understand the effect their negativity can have on my psyche. Especially if you have a number of bad experiences in a row. I admire how you seem to shake it off in time. Best wishes and safest travels to you Sarah!!!
