Excellent vid. As a mechanic's son who spent a childhood "helping" I learnt how to use tools. With the guidance of your vids instead of my late father looking over my shoulder I get so much enjoyment from completing a job well. And doing 20k a year in my mk5 is so much more comfortable than when I used to rattle along in my 3 series BMW. I'm hoping that with my service after 10k followed by a garage service after another 10k the car will clock up some reliable mileage. Thanks Alan, hats off to you.
Good "How to " Alan . I`ve patronised a good local garage over the years which I trust for MOT & all the heavy jobs I can`t safely complete on my own. These boys are very knowledgable & will point out where pattern parts just don`t cut the mustard & will obtain OEM when needed. We bought our older second hand car from this garage which they renovated to a high standard.
Great video Alan, thanks for your help from a few weeks ago on the live stream, i ended up "blue petering" a timing pin hole bolt on my 1.8 tdci galaxy and shes back on the road. Thanks to your videos ive done a fair few repairs savings me a fortune. Thanks again, I owe you and monika a breakfast butty the next time I'm in your neck of the woods. Hello from Stockton (north east) by the way!
Real pleasure to watch this, Alan. Lot of mechanics complain about the lack of a fuel priming pump on Ford cars. What's your opinion in that ? How do you start the engine in a case like that ? Thank you!
Great stuff as always Alan. Any recommendation for what gearbox oil to use? No mention of it in the handbook as ford seem to reckon it'll last the life of the car. Seeing advice online for 75W80, but any specific brands to use? Some people seem to be saying that if you use anything other than the exact right stuff it'll brick the gearbox!
The 75/80 sounds about right. Best thing is to phone a motor factor like euro car parts with your registration number and they will supply you with the right oil for your gearbox
@alan4x Amazing fast reply, cheers I'll do that. You're honestly a hero with these mondeo videos, only just bought one and I can already tell I'll be coming back to these vids a lot
Cheers! Great video, Alan - very appreciated. I gave my car a service this weekend and noticed a lot of oil on the gearbox and i identified a wet seal on the black plastic cover (flywheel) on the gearbox. Looks as if you have the same on (21:54) in this video - but you don't seem worried about it. Is it nothing to worry about?
those engines suffer from oil leaks from the gasket on a cog unit behind the high pressure fuel pump which if just minor I don't bother with. some of these engines with higher mileage can leak from the crankshaft end cap seals which is serious but normally do leave a Nice puddle of oil on the floor..huge repair job to fix that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NExYMYL2Zjk.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fXakJ1FNmmM.html

Hi Alan, I trust you are keeping well with all the changes going on for yourself. Could you advise please on the 2015 Mondeo dry cam belt, Ford says 125,000 or 10 years on my 180bhp manual diesel but I’m reading comments saying change before 80,000 miles etc as they snap. I know of no one having such trouble, just had my car serviced at 106,640 (108 service) and told too early to change belt etc and do it nearer to 125 by Ford dealer so not waste my money. Had the car from 5,000 miles 11 months old to 107,000 no trouble other than fuel pump gaskets once, a new radiator and one new rear caliper this summer. Be grateful for your expert comment please, planning to change cam belt, tensioner and water pump by 115,000 or should I do it now at 107,000? Thank you for your time and any feedback. Enjoy Christmas 2023 and the New Year.
hi gary, as far as i am aware these belts do quite well and i have not heard of them snapping either. on the taxis although the service interval is 125k miles i have always changed them at 100k miles.... we have let some run for longer and to be honest i would definately change it at 115k miles at the maximum as the belts do look a but ragged at that kind of mileage anmd a much higher chance of the water pump leaking
Hi Alan, hope you're keeping well. I've read in Car Mechanics magazine that Sealy or/and Laser do special socket set with sizes half mm bigger than standard for example 19.5 or 21.5 specially to fit those swollen wheel nut caps! I got a Ford and they do my head in when they swell as they tend to get stuck in a socket when you undo them 🤦♂️😡
Hi alan, enjoyed this one. Are your new Transit custom ecoblue 2.0 doing many miles? Are they giving any bother yet. We've had 2 snap the wet belts and another the injectors wouldnt come out of the head so it needed an engine (all under warranty thankfully)
Thanks most enjoyable and the extended story on other vehicles. But rot like that is like on sea engine wires absolute rot green. But you're video funny and informative. Thank you. Kindest regards George Telfer
Alan, why aren't you my personal mechanic? For sure you would be the only person I would let putting his hands on my car, because I would know the car is in good hands and properly taken care of. For sure this is a complete instructions manual for checking a car, the correct way. I think not even at a Ford dealer, would they check the car such in-depth, as you do. As always, great job man!
@alan ever had a mondeo/focus cut out under heavy load in high gears? No codes just shuts off, have to completely stop to restart and it’s fine immediately. It had a loose oil filter but it’s happened since I tightened it. New oil filter, new air filter, new fuel filter, still does it. Focus st diesel
there should be codes stored in the engine ecu but these may help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_w11KzYL54U.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FPY75WRL_dE.html
@@alan4x I have a basic code reader but it doesn’t show anything, weirdly you can stop and immediately start and it drives fine, never drops power, just cuts out full wood 5th or 6th 90mph (track day obviously)
@@alan4x I’ll try a leak off test as soon as I can, also check for glitter in the fuel filter similar to the one in the first video. If I give up I’m only in papworth so I’ll book it in 🤣 thanks for your videos and help
Would you suggest buying mondeo mk5 2017 2.0 l titanium? Powershift of course. What should I check first when buying if you suggest buying at all. Thanks
Great posts Alan. Are you open to the general public. Anything to worry about on a MK5 2ltr D. 180bhp varient. Manual. About 130k. Anything that is common that causes higher fuel consumption ? Cheers R
Alan whenever you carry out any repairs or replace any parts do you actually keep a record such as in a data base? Or stamp the service book when you carry out routine servicing?. THANKS.
@@alan4x That's the way to do it keep a record for every individual vehicle.Goes to show the durability of these taxis and those mk 3 Mondeos used for renting purposes. Proper servicing and adequate maintenance is the key to prolong the life span of these vehicles, which get used and abused by every man and his dog.One of your favourite quotes. Lol.....
Hello Alan, thanks for this vid. Though i dont take it to the local main dealer anymore, because i got ripped off and took it personally. I always suspected they never changed all the filters. I take it to the local Vauxhall dealer as they do a better job and change filters. And i dont get those ridiculous videos that the poor mechanic/technician has to do. A great pity your not nearer. On the subject of pads and discs, i dont recall that we ever changed discs as often as we do now. Nor springs either.
I had to buy new wheel nuts because some mechanics like to use air guns to remove the wheels. They get damaged over time. When I was broken down because of a flat tyre, it couldn't be changed until the AA came.
Do you mean the locking nuts or the oem nuts with the stupid sheet metal nut covers that fall off or worse expand so the wrench won't fit on. 19mm with the cover 18mm without the cover.
Hi Alan ,james from Australia have 2016 ford mondeo there is an issue with electric fan or is it just normal ,as soon i start the car the fan kicks in with cold temperature any advise what causes that will appreciate ur help.
Hello. Can you tell me your opinion on the Ford Mondeo Titanium MK4 2011/2012 CC hatchback? I own one and am not happy! 2 l. 144hp auto. This is a mondeo titanium and not a vw polo! It is far too noisy inside while driving!!? Lots of stupid solutions as the instrument panel has tragically little info. Placement of seat warmer in front of cup holder. You can quickly spill and damage the seat heater switch!! Motor data control front bumper front. Auto side mirror that goes into auto when you lock the car that you can't turn off. Petrol lid locking mechanism which has a weakness and needs to be replaced and takes the fuse. then you stand there and can't fill up with diesel! Front lights that shine more dimly than you expect. Car stereo that does not have the sound quality you expect from a Mondeo Titanium. Headlights that are no longer sealed and fill up with water. The large shelf plate in the trunk of the hatchback which is CHEAPLY made and breaks quickly if you lift it incorrectly. The floor plate in the luggage compartment is made cheaply and not well. Screws for the seat belt in the back seat have screw holes straight through the bodywork and out on the underside. water and salt and everything hits the screw and it rusts. Suddenly high revs when you take off from 0. You can hardly press the gas pedal, when the turbo has spun up you suddenly have high revs and stand there for 2 3 seconds before it shifts. After that everything is 100% ok. and normal. gearbox data and engine data are not programmed correctly! And several other things I dislike!
With regards to pedal rubbers. My previous Transit van failed its mot due to the brake pedal rubber being worn smooth. The clutch rubber was actually missing and they said thats not part of the mot.
@@alan4x still on the same clutch. No dpf problems. Not even had a engine light on had the car since it was new 13 miles on the clock iam hoping to get another year and 6 months out of it. The car is minted ..... when you going to do a live alan miss the chats
Allen Love the video mate good as a pre m.o.t checking a the joints bearings etc not so easy in a drive getting under a car would need put it on 4 stands but where their is a will their is a way top man Phil in stoke
Great video I had no side lights working on an mk4 turned out the daytime running lights are the side lights and the side light holders were blanked off with no wiring, do the mk5s have both? How do you release the electric hand brake on an mk5 to spin the wheels on service, leave the ignition on?
depends what spec your car its to have sidelamps as part of daytime running lamps,...the handbrake does not come on automatically like some range rovers so you can switch it on and off at will with the switch
Great video , I always thought the brake fluid nowadays is changed every 3 years on most cars ? How often do you change yours as it looked dirty and black, or is it that colour because of the amount of miles the car does each year
Ford it’s every 2 years, and it’s because of the ABS valve block, moisture in the fluid or contamination causes corrosion or valves to jam up. Seen it a few times now where ABS activates then pedal travel increases massively then it slowly returns to normal... where a valve is sticking. That’s why the brake fluid interval.
Hello Alan, I come we with a strange issue related clima on mk5 Mondeo 2015 2.0 diesel 110kw. On the driver side is working normal on the passenger side is always Cold, even with temp sett at maximum. Can you PLEASE give me some advices? What to check or replace....thanks a lot!
there ate electric motors on the sides of the heater to operate the hot/cold and distribution..not easy to get to..i have had this problem and tapping the motor with a screwdriver got it working and heating drivers and passengers compartment again...the motor on the drivers side up by the clutch pedal
@@alan4x thanks for advice! One stupid question from my side. My Mondeo is Left side driving so this motor that you told me should be under glove box in my case?
@@mihaiursac5041 i would have thought so....you can shine a torch up the sides of the heater and operate the air distribution buttons and the hot to cold buttons to see what motor operates
Hi Alan, thanks for sharing! I thought that with the Ford Easy Fuel system, it was impossible to put the wrong fuel in due to the difference in nozzle sizes... clearly just another marketing gimmick...
Hi Alan, love the videos. I've recently had my 2016 Mondeo 2.0 tdci serviced at my local independent and they've put in 5w30 oil instead of the 0w30 stated in the manual. What are your thoughts on this? Cheers
it will be fine with the 5w/30 but next service i would make sure they put the stated oil in..it stops the dpf getting sooted for one but always best to keep to the manufacturers oil
@@alan4x thanks for the reply Alan. Am I right in assuming that the next service is going to have to be sooner than the usual 18k 2 year intervals due to the different type of oil? The 5w30 they used is a 504/507 502/505 spec oil which I believe is a VAG group approved oil, any thoughts? Thanks again.
Hi Alan I am writing you from Portugal and need your opinion, please, on the following I own a Mondeo (2.0 150 BHP,Titanium,2018 )with 60.000 km Before last oil change got messages saying "complete oil level" which I did And 3 weeks ago I went to Ford dealership to change oil When I picked up the car they said they detected a" transpiration" where it could loose some oil but nothing to worry about, they cleaned it and said to check periodically the oil level Last week I went back to dealership because I know the guy in charge, and asked him to check if the transpiration mark got back When I picked up the car he told me that they found a leak under engine at motor carter and needed fixing because the "silicone kr mastique used to glue (what??) It is not good enymore and not sealing My question, when they change oil how they didnt see it? If is normal for a 60.000km car to leak oil? Is it bad? Is 650 euros a honest price? I want to mention that up untill now I was extremely happy with the Mondeo, which is a superb car to drive Also from what I researched before buying the car tne PSA engine which equipped the Mondeo is a very reliable engine, being considered one of the best 2.0 diesel in Europe Thank you Dan
hi dan, it is fairly common for these engines to develop oil leaks at low mileages...usually from the high pressure fuel pump area where the oil will run down the back of the engine...more serious leaks can occur at might higher mileages but without seeing the car I don't know where your leak is..best thing is to ask your mechanic for a quote on repairing the leak and explaining to you what it is that is leaking and what is needed to fix it
Just got too my gremlin on my mk 4 all the elec was playing around one was not the same it's a titanium x auto I thought the battery was bollocked but as I pulled the battery out I had a look at a shitty air filter (I've had this motor 8 days where my fusion give up after 181674 miles ) so I had a shitty air filter and I undun the filler bung for the gearbox yes low on oil and the cause of the elec gremlin the negative terminal was a bad earth it was going on past which I rubbed downstairs would have cost me a new battery but on test it was OK
@alan4x thanks for the vids recently got a mk5, in the video you check the spare wheel and boot foams. I'm after the boot foams for a full size spare wheel don't know if you'll see this but do you happen to know the ford part number, I asked at my local ford parts dept and he couldn't find them
Alan, how reliable are these Mondeos? I'm thinking of getting a newer car. Currently own a 2006 2.2 iCTDi Honda Civic. Owned it for 11 years, it's done 217k miles and been utterly reliable, drives spot on, engine never touched apart from servicing. Unfortunately rust on the rear end is meaning it'll have to be replaced. I have thought about the newer 2.2 iDTEC Civic but they stopped making these in 2013 so getting old now and I don't want the wheezy Honda 1.6 diesel after owning the 2.2 as it's a gem of an engine.
@@mickl8212 Was using them for twelve years extremely comfortable car, seats very supportive had diesel ones had a mk 4 from 110,000 to 230,000 written off due to small accident had others with high mileage broke down once because timing belt needed changing that wasn't changed another I kept running tank low so knackered injectors but Nitro fuel at forecourts seems good at sorting that overall don't expect much to go wrong suspension is tough. Skoda Octavias are very reliable too very economical very roomy that's why many are taxi's also
they are pretty good up until 150k miles or so, after that you could get a few coolant leaks and need to replace a few parts ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_iPoz6hf96Q.html

@@priteshchampaneri5101 you can't compress water, if the brake fluid was to turn to water which could take 15 years or more it would make the pedal hard if anything
I recently bought a mk5 2L diesel about a month ago with 108,000 miles on the clock 12 months MOT and service before parting with my hard earned money. I've driven her near on 2,000 miles since acquiring her. She purrs like a pussy cat and goes like wannoo. I regularly take her out on good run outs to perform a regen. Only two minor things firstly when I opened her up on the A14 the spanner light came on with 'See manuel' so parked her up and after a couple of minutes restarted the engine light out she drove fine. The other time on the M5 doing between 75 - 80 mph the ECU light flagged up on dash. Stopped at services did an ODB and came up with a P2000 fault (NOx trap bank1). I drove her home ok. Next day checked fluid levels, all good. Fired the engine up no ECU light. Could it be I use premium diesel to fill tank I wonder? On interweb some say it's a good for them some say not. My mechanic insists on using premium diesel with Redex DPF cleaner every 3rd tank. What would be your take on it? By the way great vids Al and hugely informative 👍

Shouldn't you be running the vehicle outside and doing your checks. before bringing in the taxi, as your polluting your workspace for you and your colleagues. Or at least drive the vehicle in forwards and keep the door open?
Regarding at mk5 timing belt replace, why bother replacing the timing belt when the valve rockers are designed to break protecting the motor. Why not drive the car till the timing belt breaks, might get another 100k ?
