So much moisture in, on, and around everything. The air was saturated with humidity, damp pine needles, wet table, our regular afternoon thunderstorm came rolling through... AND STILL... we got everything to ember ignite and then go to flames. Here is a list of the highlights:
1) A good look at my well worn, 7 year old, Beloved Old Hickory.
2) I had to give the knife's spine its first ever grinding.
3) Scrape ferro rod to ignite Pine Needles.
4) Scrape, feather, and shave Tulip Poplar to Ferro Rod ignite.
5) 'Top Boarded' a Rudiger Roll with the side of the blade.
6) Spine cast sparks with Chert then Quartz to ignite char cloth.
Come see how well the Old Hickory performed in all this moisture... Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!

Old hickory is coming out with a 5in butcher/hunter with a leather sheath for under 20 bucks soon, looking forward to getting one. The Old hickory paring knife works pretty good for whitling. Great video, just goes to show you don't need to break the band.

If they ever come up with a comfortable handle like Mora... I'll be a customer. The hand fatigue from the 7" butcher Knife is really bad... and after just a few minutes of whittling.

Awesome demonstration - wow, that Rudiger Roll was quite impressive! Really love your safety advice on the grinder 🤣👍👌 Thanks David...

There's even more that used to be required of us when we were at work... work under a ventilation hood, occasionally a respirator, hot work permit, an extra man or two for fire watch, sometimes long sleeves or a set of leathers... Safety can go too far sometimes. Thanks!

Just thought of another one... when working overhead and grinding, we had to completely enclose the work area with welding blankets, sides and bottom.

You are so right, safety can go way too far sometimes, ridiculously far! Just have a look at the oil sands up in Fort McMurray.... 😉

No wonder it looks so worn. How often do you take a grinder to the spine? A file would probably take off less metal and personally I use the scraper that came with my fire steel and it works just fine.

Stainless Steel wont file.

Atleast you got the paddle switch grinder, they won't even let you bring the lock switch grinders on the jobsites no more. The dead man switch.

I realize how important safety is, but the difference it has caused in productivity between the 80s and now is 10 times... I guess jobs cost 10 times more than they did back then.

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl copy that, if we let the safety guys have their way we'd never make it out the parking lot during the morning safety meetings. It's over redundant from a business stand point I get it but on the back end when they start to wonder why their shut down Is going over schedule they wanna pass the buck

I went to a lot of pipe fitting jobs in different states over the years, SO MANY! safety meetings, drug tests, sleepless nights in loud motels, not knowing what day of the week it was because we were working 10-12 hour days, everyday. I got to where I couldn't stand it anymore.
@CraftyCleetus

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl done the same myself for the better part of 20 years, i went to a cell tower company to weld for a few years my last go round on my tools, ive had my CDL for almost as long as a foreman for some smaller companies I'd run the cranes to rhe job sites or pipe/steel out just to get a break from the grind at times. But the last 2 years I switched it up and I drive otr now and train for the biggest Carrier there is, I make out pretty damn good honestly for doing something I use to do just to get a break. I Kno sitting on my ass all day isn't very healthy but I've got to find that happy median I can't keep climbing steel or Workin those shut downs i wont have nothing left in the tank if I actually make it to retirement

Hard to beat the Old Hickory butcher knife and a Mexican made leather sheath you can still get on Amazon all for around $20 or so. Want to be amazed/alarmed ... Read the MSDS for WD-40 (Then you’ll understand why some companies have banned it’s use in their plants.)
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 6 лет назад
My friend at the Flea Market made the sheath. I paid him $12 for it. It's been a great inexpensive sheath... No, but I have read the MSDS for that grinding disc... aside from all the breathing issues, long term use can discolor the teeth LOL!!! when I think about some of the welders I've worked with.... mine aren't exactly pearly white either. Thanks!
@lonelyprepperhomestead911
@lonelyprepperhomestead911 6 лет назад
David ... If we read all the MSDS, we would probably quit using 50% or more of the products we use now. I was involved in getting a company it’s QS9000 rating which is when I learned a lot more about the Federally required MSDS.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 6 лет назад
As a Pipefitter, during OSHA inspections, if asked, we had to know where the book of MSDS's was at... whether in the boss' truck, the gang box, the company's office at the particular job we were working at, to provide them with the MSDS for a particular item we were working with at the time (pipe dope, grinding disc, welding rods, tank of Argon, lubricating/cooling oil in the Pipe Threader, etc.) LOL!!!
