With each element being 102.25 with a 2 inch spacer, wouldnt that be a total of 206.5 instead of 204.5? Not trying to be nitpicky but I am going to try to build one. Thanks
Nice antenna mj. I've heard you on ssb, but can't talk out on my radio. It is apparently off freq!? I guess ill have to have someone .ook at it! 73s from the cactus patch!!
@@rgnichols567 Get yourself a new ham radio and never look back. Most can be easily modified to transmit on all frequencies by removing a diode or something similar. I bought an Icom 706mk2g new years ago and will never buy another cb. The problem with the cbs is when they break, you can't find anyone to fix them. I've got a nice Galaxy Pluto right now in need of repair and can't find anyone I trust to do a good job.
I have built my own design 2 element beam for many locals here. I have worked dx all over the world with this design. It really works and is dirt cheap to build.
So you're using steel instead of aluminum? Thats interesting. I might have to try that. Here in az we don't have the corrosion problems other parts of the country have. (Its a DRY heat, lol)

I sure enjoy watching your videos. I like all of the tinkering and homemade antennas. I also like seeing the distance tests you and Mrs. Mower junky do. 👍
I built a 4 element yagi , very similar to that 30 plus years ago. The reflector and directors do not need to be isolated from the boom , only the directly driven element, I used a Hy Gain BN 400 beam balun and short jumper to each half of the driven elements, same 2 inch spacing and isolation from the boom
Thank You so much. I spend a lot of time reading antenna theory, and researching different metals. I just really like antennas. Take care, Thanks for watching.
@@MowerJunkie thank you sir. I found your channel maybe 6 months ago, I've learned alot and enjoy your videos very much. When I get my Antenna together I look forward to making contact. 690Arkansas poor boy, 73's
I just got into gmrs radios and I have begun building antennas. Very fun hobby. Working towards my amateur license soon. I just constructed a copper yagi gmrs vhf. Andnit works good I need parts to get my gamma match solid but the antenna works well and has a lot of gain
Yet another amazing job ! We got all that ice in Rockhill as well, my 102 whips ground planes on my A99 drooped like they had stripped bass on the line 360 SC saying 73 2 ya
Nice job !! If you want to weld up any of them element cracks there's lots of aluminum welding rod on line. DONT buy the cheap rods. You get what you pay for... 💯
What I use for element insulation is Stauff Hydraulic pipe mountings on top of aluminium flat bar or plate. It's much more robust. To terminate your coax to the driven element; drill a small hole through the element each side and use a stainless metal thread and nuts and connect the cable with electrical terminals. Use a 1:1 current balun / choke in the coax.
I made a direct dipole feed element 12' long , 6' element spacing from scrape antennas in 1982. on a 30' pole i spoke all over the world on a cobra 148gtldx on 12 watts and the standard mic.
Excellent job, CB at its best, just doing it right !!! Another good project. I am supposed to have the makings for a light 3 element beam, maybe you have motivated me to find that box and build it. Nice analyzer you have there, I kinda expected you to get one as much antenna stuff as you are doing.
That's exactly what I wanted to build. Thank you I will use this design in the future build. LA030, AR 030 or 030 Sparky in Rogers AR. Be listening for ya. Better feed the cats or your going to be dinner.
I'm hoping to get set up soon in Dardanelle AR. I'll be listing for ya. I don't know the first thing about how antennas work. I'm open to any suggestions if you have any.
Like you're2 element yagi ,i,m getting my materials to make my own ,I hope mine works as good as yours does ,always enjoy your videos. Always very informative.Doctor J in North carolina.
Good job. On the 2 element yagi...I use to have one home made also and they work very good ,I made some DXs to Canada, Europe, Africa, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand the Caribbean and Chile...at only 15' from the graund whit 30 Watts from my HR 2510..all.. From Puerto Rico.....😎.......73's and good DX.... from unit 403 West Indies in the Caribbean...( monitor ch 38 LSB )
...a dipole with a reflector? Use the driven element as one piece of aluminium and use a gamma match to set up for tuning... Less messing around and joints. If it works and you are happy, awesome!
Great Job...I have that same rotor...I got the rain and snow from that storm...I always get a kick hearing you say your in S.Carolina with your New England accent. Take care 73...556 New Jersey said that..🎙
great job on the antenna, try making a 3 element sometime for even better results. your coax connection is very similiar to the way my old mosley ta-33 tri bander connects. works great.
I have one of those old TV rotator motors which was still attatched to an old TV antenna I was given. But I don't have any of the other components for it. I would like to use it on a CB antenna. But I have no idea what the correct voltage is supposed to be that the rotator motor uses. Do you or anybody else out there know what is the correct voltage that it takes to run the rotator motor? Is it AC or DC voltage and does it operate on 12 volts DC or 120 volts AC? Thank you or anybody else in advance that can provide me with such information. Thanks again for sharing such great video's on buliding antenna's. Every one of them has been very informative.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! I PURCHASED A SIRIO SY-4 I NEVER GOT IT TO WORK. THEN WHEN I GOT MY MACO 5/8 AS THE REST OF MY CB NEIGHBORS(N.C.), I SAID THE SIRIO IS JUNK & I GOT ROBBED!!!! NOW, YOU GIVE NEW LIFE TO MY ANTENNA! ALL I HAVE TO DO IS GET 2 HOSE CLAMPS AND A PIECE OF PLEXI GLASS AND A TAPE MEASURE!! THANK YOU. WHAT WOULD I SHORTEN OR ADD LENGTH TO FOR CHANNEL 20 OR 11? IF I MAY ASK.
Hey John! That is a nice antenna you have there. What I get a kick is your floor noise is so low! WOW! Keep the video coming my friend. 73! Unit 82 D.O.A San Antonio TX
Nice job 151, these antenna project videos are really good. Looks like your cats just wanted to be in the video too. Ice storms can be brutal and agree your antenna held out good. We get the same crazy weather like that up here in New England. I see your yagi will be dedicated for horizontal use, good for dxing. 73, 770 RI
Did you notice your SWR’s was much higher when covered in ice ? It creates a continuity , mine did that last week . Very nice job 151 . I’m looking fwd to building me a 3 element for either 2 meter or 10 meter this summer
Any wife that says," that antenna looks good on the house" is a good wife to look at and have.lol.so cool that was a great build and it took the ice. Oh my nice job!
Was great to hear you on the air this morning in gippsland Victoria. Could not send my signal out. But you came in very well and 909 Texas. 1.9.2022 73s 357 gippsland Victoria Australia Phillip
I couldn’t comment on your Facebook page because Well I go against their community standards but I am learning how to get back at them. It’s mostly fighting against scammers. But anyway man thank you for making this video I have some different ideas myself I want to try. And yours is one of them.
You Must have a good heart for Animals, Cause cats pick you, That means they trust and love you, Our 30 pound Tabby is our Child, Back to the Antenna, Do you have a schematic, for this, I,m old and Blind, and have not had a CB in 20 years when I stop Driving Tractor over the road,. , But I had a Big radio then ,So your saying you have 2 separate 102,1/4 on each end, But not connected, Is that right, and other side same length but they are Connect in center. I know this Might be a stupid question, I just don't remember. Thanks for any Help Brian
really appreciate this video - exactly what i needed - you said you were building it for channel 38 - what dimensions would you use for a less channel specific design? I am a novice with antennas cb but an avid DIY - use what you got kind of guy - in my situation, just now putting an mobile in the truck and a base at home in an attempt to communicate while hunting an area with absolutely no cell service - already have a 40 ' tower i can stick it on top of and the material to do it, just wondering if i should copy your measurements exactly or not... thanks in advance for any and all info, i don't usually like watching vids for info but i liked yours
I built this antenna so that channel 38 is in the middle of it's frequency coverage. it will easily do 40 channels up and down from 38, and still have a good SWR reading. Good luck with your antenna, 73's
So, I would guess by mounting the reflector directly to the boom, element spacing and element length may need to be more radically adjusted where as insulated from the boom, the dipole formula and 5% longer reflector may get you closer from the get go???
Good job mower junkie…. I’ll have to set up so I can can come off channel 6 to go say high up on 38 lsb someday. I’ll prolly build a little 2 element gizmotchi or a 3 nothing like I run for the super bowl..
I've still got a silver rod on the roof of a 18 story building here in London. Height really is might. I'll be taking it down soon coz it's getting bent and battered up there (they don't make them like they used to) I'll be putting up a 4ft shorter fibre glass antenna. The sigma 2011 skip master 5/8 wave.. the silver rod is still a great cheap antenna which served me very well. I tell you what the silver rod ain't scared of the antron 99. If the antron fancies a knuckle up the silver rod is ready to go. Just say the time and the place and the silver rod will be there 🌚 it just sees the antron as a skinny puny bit of wire. Anyway Queensbury rules🌚?
Beautiful, I wonder how much worse is local communication to the car and to another base of vertical antennas? As factory-made, it looks good. The wife is right :) Health for you :-)
I like it, really clean construction. I've always had the best luck with .2 wavelength and yours is real close, 86.5" being ideal from what I've seen, but at .225 you may have a bit more gain and a slightly less F-B but I'd take it! You might check out an Omega match - it's much better than a Gamma and is a balanced match! I hope I get to DX with you soon, who do I listen for on 38Lsb? - World Radio # ?
@@MowerJunkie Let's do it again. We have a nightly round table on 38. Right now I'm using a 125ft wire doublet fed with 600Ω open wire ladder line horizontally stretched out east the west. I'm working on getting my old full wave box quad back up for 11 meters. It's a all fiberglass antenna with no metal except for the mast plate and the end caps for the spreaders. This is 22 Chuck's old design. No gamma match just only 1/4 wave stub fed with a piece of 75 ohm cable. 73! 497 Brandon
Thanks J P. I don't think it needs a heater, I've been here for 8 years and this is the first time We've had an ice storm. Thanks for watching, Take care.
IF I MAY ASK............. AT THE FEED POINT , IS THERE ANOTHER WIRE FOR GROUND TO THE MAST?OR DO I RUN A SEPERATE GROUND FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE POLE TO MY LIGHTNING ARRESTOR?
Come on John you're going to title to your next video the best best homemade antenna ever then the video after that will be the best best best homemade antenna ever
Well, I could always say.....Part 2, Part 3 and so on. Besides, What makes You think I'm going to build more antenna's? Take care, Thanks for watching.
@@MowerJunkie Dear John, My 12 year old daughter suggested we start a parody channel to accelerate your view count. " Blower Junkie " I repair blowers..... CB is my hobby......
What about using a balun or current choke to decouple the unbalanced coax (52 ohms) from the balanced dipole driven element (75 ohms) which remove the problem of radiation from that coax. Additionally the vswr shown on that meter will not be accurate if the coax is not decoupled from the driven element with a current choke. Then you should transform the 50/75 ohms impedance mismatch for efficient power transfer. Since it is a mono band antenna a gamma match is simple and easy to make and will fix all these problems.
the addition of the reflector lowers the feed point to around 50 ohms! 75 ohms is only when well away from objects! a choke is a good idea but not needed. the 50 vs 75 ohm is not a problem in the old days you would use 75 ohm rg 11 or rg8 intrchangably as you could get 50 or 75 ohm swr tester and the output of radios wear tunable from 25-150 ohms! the loss from a 1.5 to 1 swr is not detctabel in radio land! the old radio books do a good job of explaning swr etc not the new ones! read one from pre 1940 it will explane it at enginring level yet make it clear for lay men!
At times you such a nut, John. But that's what I love about you. I sincerely mean that in a good way...rusty clamps, we won't be that critical. 73 & happy weekend de your badass Friend Uncle Guenter
The reason you got ice on that antenna is because you went and talked to a guy all the way up in Quebec, Canada. If you had talked to people a little further south that ice on the antenna never would have happened. In Canada they have ice on their antennas all the time.
👏🇺🇸👍 this is Shep or Shepfc1 I got a bunch of pipe I said this year I’m gonna build one like that if I’m lucky if I can I heard you the other night well I had someone call for you but I didn’t get a chance to get my other hooked up by the radio hooked up to her I can give you a shout my galaxy 95 tea definitely probably reach out to you like I said I got to get a better antenna right now I think I use is at 102 stainless web for 2 g planes on it and that’s all I’m using now but I do need to build another antenna if I can get out further 73’s to you I like that antenna
