I F’d up my back in Afghanistan. SAW gunner, weak core. Bad combo. Emergency back surgery in 05’. That sucked. That was the end of my military career. I got fat and on pills before I remembered I’m a goddamn combat infantryman. Ditched the pills and cane, got off my ass and over about 4 years, I went from 265lbs to 175lbs. Yoga, weights, hiking, shit for mental health like guitar and gardening. I need a mission. If I don’t have a mission, I get self-destructive.
Hell yeah man keep on keepin' on! I got messed up in a crash over a decade ago. It started with a few issues, chronic pain, dropping the odd thing. Got worse over time, gave up construction, I was able to do security, uniformed and UC, for a few years. Now I'm sometimes paralyzed or have trouble getting around. But I keep going when I can. I can defeat myself in a second or I can try to push myself to the limit. I have a new specialist who wants to do some testing, maybe surgery. I just have to keep positive and keep pushing on. Guys like us are proof that nothing is impossible, and when something is we unfuck the situation and figure plan B. All the best man, take care. 💪🏻
@@drive-byguitarlessons1858 age 33 I was talking to a recruiter at the local armory about joining. Even after explaining how messed up my nerves and muscles are he suggested I give it a go. I did the FORCE Evaluation at the same time as a 26 year old of similar height and weight and beat his times. Unfortunately after months of testing, applications, and all that shit the medics advised I should withdraw for now. One day if I somehow improve or a miracle happens I'll be damn sure to get back on that application.
Started rucking for fitness since August. Made a goal for myself to do sub-3hr 12 miler for my 47th birthday. Been training with a Rucker and weight plate which is a great combo. Picked up a medium Alice pack, because the frame seems more well suited for 35#. I did gush for a little bit being reunited with the old friend, until I rucked with it. lol Rucking has been a great outlet for this frontline healthcare worker and old jarhead.
Sharon, 54 years old, been rucking the last few years, love lifting weights, but rucking is fitness on steroids. Lost weight, all my physicals blood work Awsome. Stopped doing squats, for leg work, find the biggest hills and move as hard as I can. Its the golden goose of fitness.
Ay up buddy. Very fair and polite reply with regards to swearing, that must've been hard lol. *Bless their offended little hearts. Anyroad, great channel me owd cocka 👍🙂
This and $5 might buy you a Starbucks soy latte, or whatever (LOL)... But, even as a Christian myself, your "adult language" doesn't bother me. Don't get me wrong, the Bible says bridling your tongue shows maturity. But, my dad's side of the family (he's one of 8 kids) were ALL military and you sound like a choir boy compared to most of them for the majority of their lives after getting out. I just have to believe there are bigger fish to fry. (Disclaimer: If I'm wrong, it's on you. LOL)
Aaarrghh! weight plates for rucking as exercise! No! Carry what you're gonna need. If you have to add weight plates then you need to look at your load out and adjust your kit accordingly. I've never carried any dead weight, it's always been sh*t I'm gonna possibly use.
Love Rucking for fitness, twice a week, kill two birds with one stone, 45 lbs on back in Texas Hill Country, 3 miles with my German Shepherd. Awsome Channel.
If the beaches open for more than just surfers in cali. I'll be bringing my Improved duffle bag with navy seal rubber fins, a wetsuit, snorkeling gear, change of clothes and towels to beaches. I don't know how much it weighs but the rubber fins are heavy.
7:09 yep flat country over here!🇳🇱 but we have a lot of water and a lot of large bridges. Some of these have surprisingly long inclines and some are surprisingly steep. The one I use a lot has about 1.4Km incline before going down again.
I’ve started rucking a month before the pandemic started, I just wear trainers and put plates in a back pack and walk about 4 miles per hour with a 10 to 20 kg weight, for about 10 miles. I love it and am addicted, some paths are up hill fir a mile or two. I train 6/7 days a week. I’m a mother of five and I love weighs. I wrap the plates in a towel so the don’t slide or move in the bag and then tighten the straps and then tighten the strap across the chest. If your plates move roll a towel and put it against the plates so the plates are closer to your back.
I had foot issues while deployed to Iraq. It was because my boots had goretex liners. Changed boots, feet fixed. I've hiked hindreds of miles from triple digit deserts to single digit alpine mountains, all in the same pair of wool blend socks. Not all wool socks are equal. The crap the military issued were the worst socks ever made. Darn Tough or Grip6 are my all season sock, which i wear currently every day in rubber boots on a farm in florida. I havent even owned a pair of cotton socks since Iraq.
Trolls and wannabe grunts will always take shots at those who actually did the stuff. Keep to the high ground,Randall. Not worth engaging them. MSR Dromedary bags are the cat’s ass. Mine have stuck around for over twenty years of hard use and abuse. CamelBak only lasted two. Grunt on!
Cool Max, they were good, wore them for weeks ( airing at night ) it was hot in Shaibah, wet wipe on the feet every night no problems (except for the lack of water ) kit replacement was difficult.
Glad the Army loosened up a bit on great shit to wear. I was in Iraq 03-04 and SgtMaj Dumbfu*k (can't remember his name....) rolled all the way in from Baghdad to tell us that he didn't like our brown Under Armour T shirts.
This is great, damn awesome! What you mentioned about stabilizing with the abs is how I'm able to carry weight on my back. I'm still beyond screwed up waiting for a new specialist to get the all clear to see me in person and hopefully unfuck my nerves and muscles. I really enjoyed this, keep 'em coming brother ✊🏻💪🏻
I've been trail running the rocky, technical trails here in AZ for a lot of years. I like to think I have strong ankles. Even when hunting and tracking in the mountains with my 30lb hunting pack on, I wear low-top hiking shoes. Are boots still preferred for rucking on pavement given my background? Also, any opinion on Maxpedition packs for rucking?
Hello from a civi. I didn't know I was rucking until I found your channel. Thanks for the great information. Been rucking for two months now, love the cool temps. My 66 year old knees get sore, but I do 3 miles in 45 minutes with a 15 LB pack on hilly terrain. I can't get my time down, so I'm increasing weight to 20#. Want to work up to 1/3 of my body weight which would be 47#, as I weigh 135, but maybe that's unrealistic. I'm 6 feet tall, mostly just a bag of bones ☠.
@@GruntProof Thankyou for kicking me in the ass! I just went to the high-school track and quick walked a mile in exactly 14 min without my ruck. And of course the track is flatter than Kansas! Newly subbed & I shared a rucking vid with two folks.
Great videos! I was wondering, have you ever heard of the company goruck? They make these rucksacks called the rucker I was just wondering if you've heard of them and what you think?
68-71 nothing issued other than cotton at BCT or for the Republic of. Ok , I lied . We did get black nylon dress socks in BCT. When I wore them , wherever , no problems . Yes , our RTO did carry his PRC 25 in that sleeve . But we weren't up on the net a lot . BTW . I use that same ruck without the pack to pull my winter sled in the snow . I have BIG D rings that latch into those round holes IN the frame . Works perfect for me using ropes thru PVC as pull poles . I have a large WP bag I carry my Western Mountaineering sleeping bag in , strapped onto the ruck frame where the pack would normally be . Works well because that bag is SOO fucking big and don't clog up other bags with that monster . -30 Bag and right at 5 lbs . Way better than the MSS !! WAY !! That WM bag in the MSS bivy , I'd guess maybe -35 easy ?! Great video . And fuck em , if they can't take a joke !! Just wanted to tell you about how I pull my sled with that frame , less pack ... Gubs
I’m an Older veteran with bad knees and struggling with my weight, I came across your ruck videos and love the idea. Definitely going to figure out a ruck workout plan. Thanks so much
Yeah, all the civ hikers will insist on wool socks and repeat the "cotton kills" business, and that's all good for cold weather, but in the desert especially in summer cotton socks do just fine. I mean, cotton originally came from the Middle East and they wore it there for a reason: it's better in the heat.
I prefer USOA socks the green ones with some silver added. but they get weird when you get em wet I have 5 pairs, 2 pair are jacked up looking but you can wear them still...
You’re probably the only outdoor guy teaching people how to ruck. Thanks for the information and reminders. I haven’t rucked since the late 80’s early 90’s. I’m getting back into it now because of your videos.
Dude! I'm really enjoying your content. I've been subscribed for a little while, but for some reason here recently, it's really clicking with me. Nice channel, from camping and shelters to pack set ups and fitness, I'm digging it all! Thanks for taking the time and putting it out! Have a great day!
The pouch on top seems to be perfect for a PRC-77. And it need to be up high for access and signal strength. As an RTO, did you work the PRC-77s or something better that replaced them?
Great video, thank you for your service. For workouts and hiking in the past I have used a plate carrier. What are your thoughts on weighted vests/plate carrier vs. ruck sack?
@@GruntProof not sure as I've only ever handled a PRC-77 but I believe it depends on which model of sincgars you had at the time as well as what you had attached to it there are also several pictures online of Alice packs with PRC-77s mounted in that pocket
@@GruntProof they are bricks RTOs in vietnam had a life expectancy in combat of like 30 seconds. also its pretty cool that you respond to comments on old videos, you have a really great channel thats helped me with alot thanks.
Love this channel. No bullshit, just facts and some fun along the way. Your Alice shoulder straps look way more padded than mine, what are they? Just got my first Alice (large), still trying to get it lined out. Trying the molle II straps, couldn't get the Alice comfy enough... I'm 6'2", 205, 48" chest, the Alice straps seem like they were made for munchkins. The best adjustment I've found is to leave about the width of my hand between the top of the strap's padding and the frame. I definitely love the molle kidney belt, even though it gets in the way of my belt kit (fire pouch, possibles pouch, belt knife) a little.
Okay I must ask you talk about heavy on top, I am using navy issue black backpack to start with, so would packing with towels/jackets or blankets with weights on top work? Might be a stupid question. Honestly a more to the point is what is it supposed to feel like?
Your heaviest items should be highest in the ruck, and toward your back. Things like tents, water, for us, a radio. If all you have are clothing and other light stuff, put it all in first, then the heaviest item last.
@@GruntProof it feels like it so I'm going to try and do a balancing act of going a shorter way to start with. I have two routes planned one is 2 miles roughly and the other is a little more than half of a mile.
Completely agree with the plain white socks. The heat and humidity of a month in Kuwait made all the nice leather I had built up on the bottoms of my feet slide right off. The sweat alone gave me trench foot. I switched to regular athletic socks and just change them out 2 to 3 times a day during heavy use. It has been so much better for my feet. I also ditched the underwear for the same reason. No more monkey butt.
@@GruntProof LOL, yeah, as a matter of fact. The boot trapped the heat and the sweat created a sauna on my feet. The wool socks exacerbated the issue and my feet could not shed the moisture fast enough. Hence why I had trench foot in a desert.
