10 years into my cybersecurity career, and I still have imposter syndrome. But what I've learned is that everyone knows more than you - in some capacity. An important thing I had to learn was cybersecurity isn't just red team/blue team; it's GRC, security technology management and engineering, product security, corporate security, infrastructure security, incident response, etc. Just keep learning! Very few people you will work with will know it all.

The major issue is others that expect you to just know it all. My background is networking and of course I've used Windows but the Linux admins expect me to know everything concerning Linux just because my position is cyber. It gets really annoying.
@Whatthellisthisthing
@Whatthellisthisthing Год назад
@@ILLTh1ef Some recruitment expectations can be asking a lot. However, I will say that majority of public facing web servers run on Linux, which could play a big role in a networking career. Besides, learning Linux networking will definitely strengthen your skills.

20 years and that feeling never goes away. Everything you've said so far is 100% accurate. It is not just "purple" teaming. It's so much more. Like you said, "Just keep learning!" The biggest hurdle that I believe most of us face is the work/life balance. We have to keep learning the latest/greatest threats that it can be more than just a "40 hour work week". lol

I'm my own worst enemy. I built a 7 card mining rig from scratch (it runs on Linux which I've never used before). Ever since then I've been super interested in learning more and with all the Blockchain hacks coming out nowadays I thought getting into cyber security might be an option even at the ripe old age of 43. But I'm still fighting myself and can't afford to bring on more debt.

Shouldn’t need to go into debt to get into cybersecurity! Lots of free resources and entry-level certs that aren’t too expensive. It’s definitely an option regardless of age
@Red_man1

@@RyanJonkerCyber Ryan is there a cert. that I can obtain that will make me more hirable for an entry level position?
@RyanJonkerCyber
@RyanJonkerCyber Год назад
@@Red_man1 yes, I recommend starting with a job search in your area. See which certs they are looking for. For example, Security+ is big around the DC area, but maybe not so much in other places. So there isn't one cert that fits all necessarily, but either way you certainly don't NEED a 4-year degree to get a job in IT. Check out Neil Bridges "Cyber Insecurity" channel, David Bombal, Jon Good, Gerry Auger "Simply Cyber" and many others for info on how to "hack" your way into your first job.

I participated with my university in the National Cyber League competition against other universities and colleges. A great learning experience from what little I know. Also, you learn to work with your team and it was fun. The NCL competition is where I learned about the top tier universities and got me researching about their cybersecurity programs. I transferred out of my university last year and starting in the SANS Technology Institute next year. Cheers!

Thanks for speaking on something I believe we don’t see much about. In a field where we can look up to so many great, interesting and successful people, we definitely don’t see the failures they experienced on the way there. No matter what those may have been, they continued the work and like you mentioned so should we. Like others have said, we sometimes just have to stop being our own hurdle.

This is what I needed to hear. I joined my school's cyber club, but I haven't really been active due to my classes (I was struggling), work, my mental health, as well as imposter syndrome hitting big time. But this upcoming semester I am going to aim to join a team and compete or just be active in the club again.

My freshman year I was very hesitant on joining because I felt that I didn’t know enough to really do much in the NCAE competitions they participated in yearly but my the club representative was very welcoming although i didn’t know much. It might have been the opportunity cost loss that implies what you didn't do was the better option. Although I graduated doing cyber at 21 after rushing through college not caring about internships or clubs and I didn't care for any "resume building." But I was still able to get 83k (San Antonio TX) as my first ever job and they really did just hire me without any experience. This was despite everyone and their mom telling me I can't just get a job out of college with zero work experience. I learned much more on the job than any club could have taught me. I really don't think clubs are all that useful as events don't translate easily as something that'll demonstrate merit or knowledge to an employer or anyone who wasn't at the event. I think cyber itself is just a nice badge itself to suggest you are a specialist and will be paid as such for normal infrastructure or sysadmin roles.

Then did a period with them as a contractor for a few months and they liked what I did a lot so I got moved full time. I was suppose to be paid more although I was lacking in experience for HR to give me more. I also got multiple offers from the NSA, but its government and you aren't allow to bring phones or personal devices there. NSA has a lot of positions pretty easy to get. Their process takes super long though. I have no certs but I am getting a VCP DCV 7 at the moment, which should pay around 130k and a CyberArk one after

My biggest regret is that I didn't even really try to make friends within my major and more made friends with people I was living near and because of that when I tried to join my school's club I just felt like an NPC who felt alone and didn't know what they were doing. So I quit before I really got involved. Also for some reason my school didn't emphasize a "portfolio" so I don't have one and now I know getting my first job outside of college is going to be a nightmare.

If I do well I get to move on to the bootcamp (that's where the expensive stuff comes). Do you think joining your program then going into bootcamp maybe 2-3 months after benefit me?

See my thing a current cyber security major is that I am not fond of coding whatsoever.... Its highly encouraged and recommended to get involved and understand 2-3 languages, which I entirely understand but do not have the drive or discipline to do so. I am more or less involved with management and the networking infrastructure side of things. I feel as if though I will never be qualified or ever have the ability to possess a position involving Cyber Sec... But I am doing all that I can to ensure the completion of my Bachelors. I find it a struggle to stay motivated, intimidation is a major factor involving my mental considering there are so many individuals who have and are mastering coding and all its involvements compared to me. I just really hope it all pans out, again I have no desire to code. I can hopefully be a model for those to compare themselves to once I complete my degree and potentially find a position. Im 68% through the process. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I can manage after university studies, I would not mind hearing you out.

I have a hard time believing that you would be denied as an alumni of the program and share your videl with your previous proctor. The whole point to the program is to prepare you for the real world. Ask to be a member of the team during the next event. If I am right you have to have me on as a guest. Deal?

What I learned in CS is that most everybody is full of shit. If they weren't they wouldn't be working for some lame ass company and having their profile on LinkedIn with all the BS certs that really dont mean shit either. The true artists and practitioners work in anonymity and in the shadows. I dont want anyone knowing who I am or what I know to the greatest extent possible. Even posting comments like this is ill advised when trying to keep under the radar. Be a silent professional and learn as much as you can on your own. There are only a handful of truly well rounded cybersecurity pros working for big corps or the gov that are worth mentioning. But can you even name them???
