What's wrong with that? It's true that Captain Beefheart may not be everyone's cup of tea, like Ms. Murphy said, but he's got MAJOR props from musicians from almost every genre you can think of. He worked closely with Frank Zappa a great number of times. A whole lot of people call "Trout Mask Replica" *pure genius*and while I'm certainly not always in the mood to listen to it, I would have to agree.
Congrats on the VH! I also need this record to complete the VH collection. I picked this up and put it down four times over a two year period at my local record store (Forever Young Records). It was 39.99 new when it came out and I just didn’t want to spend the money! Finally one day I went back in early 2104 to buy it and it was gone and is now worth over 100 bucks! Live and learn!

Captain Beefheart bores the hell out of me, and I don't blame you for not listening to any Sting albums --- but you dear are utterly charming. I'd listen to you reading a phone book. Thanks for this video, which contains a lot of lessons for vinyl buyers. I love your concise reviews of each album. Shame on that store for selling a warped record. The manager carefully inspects each record, so he had to know it was warped. Red vinyl is extremely nice! You are one of the most fun to watch video presenters I have ever seen! I went to the store that I bought the warped record from this past weekend and he saw the video and recognized the sticker and told me to bring it back. That store is great and they are very honest. Theres no right or wrong in what your taste in music is. I will say sometimes albums will grow on you. I bought TMR in 1970 and couldnt get through side one. Years later( in the mid 80's) i listened again and loved it! In the 17 year interim i listened to Howlin Wolf, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, etc. A lot of CB's influences were unknown to me in 1970. It took some time to sink in.
This happened to me with Never Mind the Bullocks..., once you hone your ear to listen past the noise you hear the rough chord structure and musical sound. This never happened with TMR.
I bought the "deluxe CD/DVD" version of "A Different Kind Of Truth". The DVD is them singing a few songs acoustic. I really liked it. DLR sounds pretty good on it too
Here's a tip for everybody that collects records. Know your record labels both first pressings and reissues before you start buying. I can't tell you how many times online or in stores that I've seen a seller trying to pass off a reissue as a first pressing while charging a premium price. They will state it's a first pressing when it's a late 70's or an 80's reissue instead. A lot of people don't know that and end up getting ripped off by paying more money for a less valuable record. Some will be sneaky and try to put a reissue in a first pressing jacket to fool the customer into paying more. There are a lot of crooks out there trying to rip people off since vinyl has made a big comeback. So, know what the labels and jackets look like before you make your purchases so you don't end up wasting your money.
Trout Mask is a great album. I had to listen to it several times and did a bunch of research about the album and how it came about and recorded. After learning the history and myths about the process, it became more and more amazing. Now one of my favorites and takes me away in moments. Cool vid.

I am an avid vinyl collector myself been collecting for nearly 40 years have well over 2000 albums, my big takeaway from this seems to be know what you are looking for know your record labels..PS. the Captain Beefheart is a good find the album is definitely not for the Casual listener but a true gem.
I'm sure with 40 years experience you have the knowledge to avoid all these mistakes. Hopefully, I will be where you are at some point. I have no regrets about buying Captain Beefheart. It has been very entertaining.
@@MelindaMurphy well thank you for the reply I know I've made all of these same mistakes myself pick up things I thought was an original release that ended up being a reissue or a bootleg, and like you with the Van Halen LP let things go that I said oh I'll pick it up later and then it ended up going out of print LOL no avoiding some of these mistakes.

@@MelindaMurphy For trout mask replica, you said it may not be your cup of tea. Then why not change the cup without change the tea? And try again? What I mean is that you can see that this album contains a lot of short pieces. How about try listening it as one whole piece? Vinyl record cannot do this but I know that some software can help delete the fade in to zero and chain each of the tracks in an album into one.

I make it a rule to open new vinyl at the store (after purchase) to check for defects such as factory scratches, and if they have a turntable on sight to check for warps. If I find an issue I can immediately show the store and get a refund or swap for a good copy. Saves me a lot of time.
Great video! I once bought the Beatles red album “The Beatles/1962-1966” but when I got home I realized the vinyl inside the album art was the blue album record. I called my local record store and I was able to schedule a trade for the blue album in their store that had the red album’s record inside :)
Hi Melinda, as it turns out, that counterfeit Bowie album is actually quite rare, and worth much more than you think! Also, if you can listen to Trout Mask Replica a few times, even though it's a challenge at first, I think that you will find that it becomes very interesting and so far ahead of it's time, that you may be pleasantly surprised by it.. It's a magical record, and really quite a brilliant piece of work. Please give it a close listen, I think you might be glad that you did! It's famous for a reason.. Hi Melinda My local store has a record dewarp machine. I dropped off a record. They bake it slow for like two hours and then it cools slow and most of the warp is gone. It works on up and down warps but not warps that distort the roundness of the disc. It's worth asking your local indie stores if they have one, so you can fix your Atom Heart Mother record.
Our local record store was going to fix it for me however, the record store that I bought it from saw the video and told me I could trade it in. Both record stores were very nice about it.

Congratulations ! I can totally relate to it myself. Billy Idol’s Cyberpunk and the reissue of Pink Floyd’s Pulse were two of my biggest grails that si have bought the last 18 months. How to fix a warped record. Stick record in cover between two large ceramic tiles. Add weight (10 - 15 lbs.) on top. Let sit in the sun on a hot day for 4-5 hours. Again, must be a hot sunny day. The latest Dylan album came to me with a crazy warp. A friend suggested this and it worked for me.
I dont understand why you are buying records of Music you don't like.. Not my cup of tea.. In the 80's as a teenager I bought the albums of the artist I liked.. Not to collect them but to listen to them..
As an 18 nearly 19 year old I second that, I buy only what I like and if it's cheap what I might like and therefore take the plunge on something random. No point buying what you know you won't like and is just a waste of money/space (if multiple) for you. But I get people can be influenced or think they like something, but don't etc
Great and informative video. Biggest vinyl mistakes I've made were overpaying for some used records. But a big mistake that didn't cost too much was not taking the vinyl out and checking it when buying a copy of Ratt's Invasion Of Your Privacy. Oddly, it had a Ratt album in it. But it was Out Of The Cellar. Eventually got another copy of Invasion Of Your Privacy with the correct album inside. But now I've got to find the right cover for Out Of The Cellar.
As you have seen, I did that one too with The Doors album. Lol. At least that isn't an expensive one to get. I hope you find the right cover for a wonderful price soon.

I collect 50s-60s jazz lps for the pleasure of the music, not for value. I try not to pay anymore than $2 for an lp. If I happen to get a lemon, it's easy to throw it in the trash. Nothing is more exciting for me than to find a clean dollar lp of a jazz musician/group I have never heard of and it turns out to be a gem.
That sounds great. If you are spending only $2 for records then mistakes are no big deal and if you do find gems, they are just that much more special. Prices of vinyl that I want in my collection are much more expensive where I live. Take care!
Melinda: you not understanding Beefheart is one reason I cant subscribe! It is considered one of the great seminal jazz rock country poetry blues albums of the 60s!
When I made that video I had just bought that record and hadn't listened to it much yet. It is an unusual album but I didn't get rid of it and I wouldn't consider it a mistake. Take care.

The fact that many people, myself included, love Beefheart's music, means that it can't, by definition, be objectively bad.
Hi Melinda, I really enjoyed your video. In 40 years of record collecting, I've somehow managed to avoid Trout Mask Replica, and based on what I've read of others' impressions of that album, I think I will continue to steer clear of it. My only exposure to Captain Beefheart was Shiny Beast, which I didn't really enjoy and traded soon after I acquired it. Incidentally, I listen to a lot of transgressive / experimental / odd music, like Nurse with Wound for example, and I never feel bad about admitting that I don't enjoy something that is considered a staple in the genre. Feel free to like what you like, or not like it! Thank you for your opinion of the Cranberries album. I don't have any of their works on vinyl, but have been thinking about springing for some of the reissues. I met Dolores O'Riordan when they were in the U.S. promoting their first album and they were incredible in concert. You did a great job of reviewing the Van Halen album. Have you ever heard David Lee Roth's Eat Em' and Smile? That's such a great record and I don't hear it mentioned very much.
I have and love Eat em and Smile. That is DLR's best album. Cool story about meeting Dolores. A huge fan would love this Cranberries album. I was expecting all the original songs and music and that was why I was disappointed. People say that Trout Mask Replica has to be listened to a dozen times before one can appreciate it. Trout Mask Replica is an album that I know I will slowly work my way towards but I am surely not rushing it. I can see the appeal musically but you have to really get in the right mindset for it (and I dont mean with any sort of substance!). In terms of buying mistakes, theres been a few bootlegs where the quality wasn't up to snuff. I aim to not regret most of my purchases but there have been cases where some purchases were impulse buys and time would pass before it dropped to an astounding price that was lower than what I purchased the record for (example: Monkees Live 67 that I purchased $20 for, went down to $12 a week later!)
I bought Trout Mask Replica in hopes of liking it. I'm not sure I am there yet but it is still cool to have in the collection and the price I paid was way below it's value. I have impulse buys that I probably shouldn't have bought as well. Lol.
I was in a Barnes & Noble store in Delaware yesterday. The WHO " WHO'S NEXT".... $24.99...I bought the remastered expanded CD edition of WHO'S NEXT years ago, for $20.00! So glad I retired from vinyl , 30 years ago!
I did exactly the same thing with the Bowie record. Paid about the same as you. I still think having the bootleg is pretty cool though. It sounds good to me, and it was interesting to find out about it... and it is still a part of Bowie history : )
Clever idea Melinda on this video. Nice tidbit on the Captain Beefheart. A very popular band in the VC that I just can’t get into. I’ve tried but it just isn’t there. Would love to own some original pressings of the Cranberry’s. I was lucky enough to grab that VH lp at a good price. I think 30 dollars. Only track I like is Chinatown. Enjoyed! Andre’

I’m new to collecting records, I started this year, and I decided that I’m only buying what I love. For the most part I do, but one day I found a great deal on Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits. I wasn’t a fan, but that changed as soon as I played it. I was amazed that I liked every single song. I was like, what’s this? How am I 46 years old and just discovering their music? How did I live this long, and didn’t bother to ever check them out? So for me, buying a record because it was on sale worked out great. 😁
That is a great point. If buying something new helped you discover Fleetwood Mac then that was a wise purchase. I only discovered The Beatles a few years ago through vinyl collecting. Now they are one of my favorite bands so I understand what you are saying. In my video, I showed records that I was already familiar with and bought them because they were on sale really cheap. Beefheart is certainly an acquired taste. I like Trout Mask Replica, but enjoy some of his other work a bit more (Bat Chain Puller and Safe as Milk). I've made all of these "mistakes" in my years of collecting as well.

On the other hand, he must be rolling in his grave anyway ever since Jack White re-released TMR with a cotton bag, a button badge, a patch and a real trout mask in the package, so it would be sold exclusively to the kind of people Don hated!!!
Many years ago I bought Herman's Hermits Greatest Hits. Got it home and it was all re-recordings. UGH. Bought another version, and it was the same re-recordings, different packaging. Double UGH. The third time I found it, it had all the original recordings. Finally had what I wanted! BTW, gorgeous house!

"Trout Mask Replica" is perhaps THE MOST polarizing album ever. It's really hard to swallow at first, but after the fourth listening (or so) front to back you start realizing the genius that Don Van Vliet was. Once his approach to music clicks with you, you can't have enough of him. This album was a big hole in my collection, but original copies in great condition are ridiculously expensive. I owe Mr. Jack White an eternal debt of gratitude for making this record affordable after so much time. His reissue of the album is excellent. And glad to know Van Halen is your favorite band! "1984" is the last album from them that I really liked, but anyway VH is one of the greatest rock bands ever without a doubt.
Some very good advice for collectors and a bit of catharsis for you! On the Van Halen issue, there could have been any number of reasons why they didn't return to the studio, so please don't berate yourself for that. My biggest mistakes have involved trusting sellers - always on Discogs - against my better judgement. Ultimately I stopped using it. Now I'm going to get another coffee and watch "Vinyl Collecting Isn't As Fun As It Used To Be!" :-)
I have had a Discogs disappointment as well. I am always nervous when buying from someone on Discogs and avoid it as much as possible. I had to pay up for the Van Halen album but I have no regrets with that purchase now. Thank you and take care.

I made a little mistake by not paying attention when buying this record one morning. It was a Charlie Daniel's Band(Fire on the mountain.) Record. I pulled it off the shelf to make sure it was the proper record inside. It was. When I got home, I noticed a persons name written on the label (side 1). It was autographed by Charlie Daniels. I paid $1.99 for it!🤩🥰😁

Rookie mistakes. Always check for warps. Even if they don’t have a listening statin. Rest it on your finger tips and view the record on its side to see if it’s warped.
nah just playin'. i'm envious of that orig copy of "trout mask" is all, mine's a boring ol' late '70s warner bros one. do you like any other beefheart recs? this isn't the easiest one to get into or in my opinion even the best one.
I hope you kept Trout Mask Replica. It's not an easy listen to start with, but if you keep going back to it then one day it will click with you. Then you will realise why it's talked about in the way it is!
Excellent video Melinda. Very honest as well. I bought Wings at the Speed of Sound on the day of release in 1976. When I played it at home, both sides played the same songs. Since I couldn't afford a second copy I took it back to the record shop and they exchanged it. Looking back, maybe I should have kept a hold of that one😀. Cheers...
Interesting. I have never heard of any Paul McCartney albums that were like that. I think you did the right thing so that you could enjoy the whole album. I guess mistakes like that happened back then and still do. I'm not sure if it would be worth money now or not. Take care.
Two years ago,I ordered LL Cool J's Radio album on Discogs and when it arrived,it came in a plain white sleeve instead of the actual cover. I could've killed someone that day.
I think our emotions run high when we find something we have been looking for or just think someone made a mistake when pricing a record. I have bought lps and then realized I should of looked closer on condition and the proper disc. I have a check list in my head I go thru before I buy a record and it is what you just covered in your video, right disc, warps, first pressing for me, and no scratches I can feel with my fingers. Your Bowie looks like record club pressing because it has the three bars at the top right corner. I wonder where it was pressed and if that might be the reason for the difference from a in house Mercury pressing. I will check and see if I can find out anything. Nice video and don't worry about the errors we all in the VC have done the same. God bless you and your family.
WOW, you are right about the Bowie being a fake. I looked on eBay and there is a bunch like yours for sell and people are selling as originals and not knowing. Discogs has yours there with all the info about it, I did not know they faked this record either. I guess you learn something new every day.

Yeah, The Doors Greatest Hits is a 2 disc/LP set. I have it on CD but not on vinyl. I had something similar happen with a Barry White compilation. The case and cassette looked like they belonged together at a glance but it turned out the cassette was from a different Barry White comp. I have that Donna Summer compilation. That's probably all I really need of hers. :) I remember Amberle posted a video a while back where she showed her copy of Prince's 1999 that was missing a record too. I only have one counterfeit which is a Massive Attack album I showed earlier this year. I kept it because it still sounded great and the counterfeit was so convincing I only discovered it when checking the deadwax which was missing all the etchings. As soon as you pulled out Atom Heart Mother, I thought to myself "I bet that's a pirate copy." It was heavily pirated back in the day. But nope! It's a warp. I've had that before too. I'm now careful about looking for warps but occasionally an edge warp slips past my gaze if I'm in a hurry. Those can be tricky to spot. I think most of us have some records where we wish we could go back in time and grab an album (or a lot of albums!) at the retail price back then. The price of some albums has gotten crazy. I try to listen to and sample any used LPs whenever I I buy from my local record store. But unfortunately I don't always have the time to do that either so I've had a few that I wish I could have returned. They would have let me but when it turns into 3 months before you can make it back in it's a little too long so I haven't even tried. I like it when a record store has turntables set up to let you sample. But I do also worry that I may be messing up a great LP by using some needle that should have been replaced 2,000 hours ago haha. Whenever I take Uber to go to the record store, I've never yet spent less than 5 hours there during the day listening and shopping. And due to the fact it cost me $30 plus to take Uber round trip, I'm definitely going to make sure I don't get home and wish I had sampled something. But it's another story if I'm riding with a friend and we go by because they're not wanting to hang out in a record store and wait for me to sample things. I'm feeling lucky there stopping by so I can run in. So sometimes you have to take the risks if you want to get something but a good record store will allow you to return or exchange problem LPs if you can get back sooner than I can usually and I'm glad they do that :-) Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

Great video Melinda. I had no idea my David Bowie album was a counterfeit. You mentioned those details and I pulled my copy and confirmed it's a counterfeit. My son did some additional research and there is a couple seconds edit on the audio as well. Keep it up.

Trost Mask Replica is one of the best albums ever. In 20 years or so, you find the key to that kind of music. Don't give up!! Greetz from Munich, C.L. P.S: Take a look on other Beefheart Records. 'Safe as Milk' is easy stuff. And 'Mirror Man' blows you away (psychedelic blues rock in four long tracks). Or the freaky Zappa/Beefheart Album 'Bongo Fury' - both, the Captain and Frankie, started a live long friendship at school in Mojave (ca.Mid-1950ties).

Take an ear on 'Safe As Milk'. And give 'Trout Mask Replica' short spins. Slowly, in short steps. Song for song. Nobody can hear the complete 'Trout Mask Replica' album. Too much pain, dirt, sweat and tears. Listen one side, thats enough, the other sides days or weeks later. Don't give up! I bought a record flattener and have flattened a couple hundred records already. Warps no longer scare me. Look up Vinyl Flat... and get the heated pouch. Worth every penny.
Van Halen is my favorite band so Balance was my Christmas present last year and ADKOT was my birthday present. I am very happy and fortunate to have them. Thank you and don't be jealous! 😊 I'm sure you have killer records!

Don't know the technical terms but most records from the late 60's to late 70's were made of thicker vinyl and didn't warp, also wanted to add that the covers from original pressings were much better than later reissues...

Good video Melinda. Im pretty meticulous when i buy used in the wild. The one thing i don't alway check is possible warp. However if a record is above 30+ bucks i do check. Luckily my only warp probs have been new vinyl. Excellent score on your top grail. Funny how something so insignificant when it comes to life still gives ya that excitement of a child on xmas!!!!
I check for warps now too and new vinyl is a much bigger problem. I was very excited about my Van Halen album and I did feel a little bit like a kid at Christmas. Lol.

I'm heading down to Phoenix in a couple of weeks to do some vinyl hunting, and I plan on taking into account the tips you've provided, since I wouldn't be able to return them in a timely manner. So, thanks for doing that! I've been there a few times, myself. Regarding Captain Beefheart, "Trout Mask Replica" is very much an acquired taste, which I still have yet to acquire. Even years of listening to Frank Zappa (who produced the album) didn't prepare me for that album. Maybe it'll click with me, someday. Anyhoo, have a great evening!

The store manager that I bought the record from recognized their sticker and offered to take it back which was really nice. I was planning on having it straightened out. Thank you for letting me know. I will keep it in mind in case I make that mistake again. 😃
I made a lot of mistakes in my record journey for both 78 shellec and vinyl, from handling, alchohol, weird lubricants, storage, objects around my records, etc. I have also made every mistake you did when buying, but now we know.

Always check for warped vinyl...even brand new /sealed LPs. They can be warped too. I have tried everything to try and fix a warp. It just doesn't work. It may look flat after putting some heat on it between two glass plates or tiles but the sound quality is badly affected.
The Van Halen was not necessarily a mistake, if you would have purchased it in 2013 it is highly unlikely that it would be on the red vinyl, colored vinyl will always cost a bit more but it's also more collectible.
The Van Halen album was only issued once on red vinyl to the best of my knowledge. I paid extra because it is out of print. I should have bought it way sooner. 😣 Oh well.
Absolutely! I couldn't agree more, especially when it comes to buying records that you'll actually play. As a new collector myself, I made the mistake of purchasing too many during sales due to FOMO, and unfortunately, many of them never sparked my interest or got played. In the end, I ended up selling them at a loss.
The records I showed are still in my collection and still aren't being played. I no longer buy records just because they are on sale. I ask myself the critical question of whether I will truly listen to each record before I buy it. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I only bought two greatest hits albums on vinyl. In 1974 I bought Alice Cooper when I was 10 and in 1982 I bought Dolly Parton's Greatest Hits. I just couldn't resist the pun intended.
Hello Melinda; I will say the CB - TMR price was good. It is not many peoples cup of tea. Unless you are a fan & enjoy avant garde music. The Doors LP looks like an import from Germany. The Bowie counterfeit was well circulated at the time. The original LP cover photo was different. Still good to have. I would have made them an offer of about 12 to 15$ tops. His 2nd & 3rd Lp's were on Mercury before Bowie signed with RCA & they reprinted the LP's with new covers. The 1st was on DERAM. Should you ever see it. Hope this helps you. Always sample first or accept the worst. I would have called on the warped record. The mistakes are not bad. You would not believe how many records sold in stores we're phony. Thank you so much Tina and Pat. If I had known the Bowie album was a fake, I wouldn't have bought it at all. I knew it had a different cover and I may buy a legit one of those someday. You are right, I should have called the store about the Pink Floyd album. They could have made a note of it so when I come back I could do an exchange. It still plays but it should have cost much less. Captain Beefheart is definitely different. I think it is a cool addition even if I only pull it out occasionally.
