Clint, it seems that you overpacked/overestimated the gear that you needed for your bikepacking trip. Understandable, for a first go. I think you'd do great if you went out with a smaller group on a route that suits your gear better. This past August, I did a 3 day (2 night) bikepacking trip up in the white mountains of New Hampshire and Northern Vermont with a buddy of mine and it was absolutely amazing. This trip for me was much more similar to backpacking and I feel that your first trip was closer to camping due to the services and amenities that were available. I would love to see a video of a much less organized bikepacking trip and I think that you are more than capable and geared up for such a trip. Either way, I enjoyed the series! I did want to see more a backpacking type but for your first time it still seemed awesome!

Hi Clint, could you explain your quilt / underquilt setup some day? Looks bulky to me and this is definitely a concept unknown in Europe. Why not a high-CUIN sleeping bag?

Why does every first time want-a-be think we need to know what they took along with them. I'm 82 and writing a book on how to live the life of a modern-day nomad. Something I have spent the past 65 years doing. Traveling by canoe, kayak, on foot and by bike. It took me 92 pages with no photos or graphs and every paragraph has a reference where to find more in-depth information that explains what it means to live and thrive on the road. Going into depth to explain the whys and the research behind the whys. The 20 some years of research I did on beginner and expert teachers and artists showed that a beginner takes less than 30 minutes to exhaust their knowledge of the subject and the expert can go on for hours discussing the same subject in unbelievable depth. For a first-time tour by bike, canoe, Kayak or backpacker ask an expert and you will avoid the beginner goof ups that my drive you away from a lifestyle of self-propelled travel.

Clint, Trek has this amazing bike sale. I'm a beginner and was thinking of either the Roscoe 7 or 8. They are $200 apart at current levels. Many people say the 8 is so much better, but I'm already above my price point with the 7.

Honestly, if your already above your price point, whats another $200 bucks in order to get some pretty decent upgrades from the 7.

@@jonzylka9474 Thx for responding. I don't know anything about mountain bikes, but would like to buy something that will last me. Seems like you would definitely recommend the 8. I guess I will go and get that then. They have a sale right now where they sell the 7 for 1.4k and the 8 for 1.6k.

@@user-yy7mq5yj5o You get pretty significant upgrades to the rear hub, fork and rear derailure for just $200. In my opinion its a no brainer. Plus, you can keep upgrading things like your brakes, shifters, cranks, etc as you please. However, there really would be no rush in your case. As I am assuming you are pretty new to the cycling world. As you get more invested, you can either choose to upgrade parts, or your bike.. 😉. Welcome to the rabbit hole of MTB’ing

Just throwing this into the mix… the Rosco 9 is a freaking AWESOME bike. My buddy has one and its a fabulous bike. The build that comes on it is great an really wouldnt be anything id want to swap out. It comes with shimano XT drive train which hands down i prefer to Sram fox fork, and for the sale price right now it really cant be beat…. If greatly consider that as well… what the 8 has to the 7, the 9 towers over the 8 with!!

I say try to swing the extra $200. The value you get in buying a complete bike is far better than buying independent components later on down the road when you try to upgrade. $200 is what some people spend on Starbucks for a month. Maybe delay your purchase for a little bit and save. But if you absolutely can’t do it then get the one you can and go ride and have fun!

id rather overpack food (these dehydrated meals arent super high in calories, and biking uses a ton of calories) than clothes 'n stuff :)

Looks like getting all the essentials together for bike packing is a pretty sizeable investment. Guess you want to make sure you're going to do it more than a couple of times before jumping in.
