Oh so very important!! More times than not we feel embarrassed going in to be seen. Having a doctor and his staff treat their patients with dignity, respect, care, and understanding is VERY much appreciated. More than you know. So, Thank you.🙂
I'm in my final year of medical school and tbh I was just going through the motions, only thinking about the end of medical school when i finally become a doctor that I forgot to enjoy the journey. I was even questioning if I had chosen the correct path for myself. Watching your videos and seeing how passionate you are about what you do has really motivated me and helped me to regain focus on what I believe is my purpose. You make me want to be the best doctor I can be and be able to help as many people as I can. Thank you.
Dr.Mike you’re the reason I’m comfortable and honest with medical professionals. Keep the great work up. You really show the human side of the doctors.
I recently started having panic attacks due to my issues with anxiety. Can you make a video about anxiety? Maybe ways to help when you’re alone and having a panic attack? I don’t go to see a doctor for a while, and I don’t think I need to see one urgently because panic attacks are a normal thing. But some tips would be great! You don’t have to if you don’t want to. This is just a request.
A panic attack is *not* normal. Common and normal aren't really the same. I have anxiety myself, and I want to encourage you, please, see a doctor for your anxiety. There are many options for help. Therapy and/or medication can make life soo much better
do you mean it is a regular occurrence vs normal thing? regardless, if you are having panic attacks either once in awhile or on a regular or semi-regular basis, you should see a doctor and/or therapist. some people have them very rarely. some people have them occasionally and then it becomes more frequent, and for some they can become so frequent that they become debilitating. you could have triggers that you are unaware of that a doctor or mental healthcare professional can help you identify and help you learn how to cope with having panic attacks and possibly lessen the severity and/or duration of them.
This is one of my tricks for when I have them, I try to find someone to talk too, something that distract your mind . I can fell mine coming on sometimes and this helps me ,but everyone is different. But please go and see your Dr .There is medicine for this more people have this than you know.
Mine talks to me like I'm a robot, then they make me solve this unsolvable puzzle they call a "captcha". They even kick me out after, just because I didn't pass it
You say very valuable things to medical students. Even in the medical field, we see people who are rich in knowledge but not rich in attitudes. Such videos are very important to avoid such people in the future.
As an aspiring doctor, your stories have really helped motivate me and shaped me for the best. So thanks a lot for taking time from you busy schedule and uploading on RU-vid ❣
Thank you so much for this video! I have watched you along with some other doctors on RU-vid for a while, and I've decided I want to be a doctor, or something else in the medical field. I will never stop watching you, thank you for all you do! I understand everything I need to do, and I'm working hard to achieve my dream!
1:26 was probably the most slept on bad habit that most teachers or knowledge givers miss out on. It is crucial to admit your void of knowledge on some things so that the misinformation does not end up spreading even more to other students.
I understand so much more of medical stuff when watching you you inspire me to think outside the box, concentrate, be happy and you inspire me to be a doctor or so and make me less scared of the real world
You helped motivate me to go after my real dream- nursing. My passion is working with the pediatric population as a WOC nurse. I have Crohn's disease myself as well as an ileostomy. Providing education for patients and erasing the stigma is something that I'm passionate about.
What a great video! We need more doctors who have the same perspective like you, treating patients like a human being and really just listen, sometimes that's all it take. You are a true and an inspring doctor, people are lucky to have you as their caring provider. Keep doing what you do and creating amazing videos on your channel. 🙏
@@IAmZero798 I feel better knowing that a pharmacist is checking considering they're the medication experts and they know more about this stuff than Doctors/nurse practitioners do. How often do you check if it's a controlled medication?
I would be curious to know how many pharmacists actually double-check the prescriptions. Because the ones near me have to fill over 100 RX a day, sometimes as much as 300 per day. Where would they find the time?
@@laurao3274 that’s the problem with retail pharmacy to be completely honest. My pharmacy fills up to 700 scripts a day and we have to check every single script. But our system has a drug interaction block on it. If the system notices an interaction with another drug or health condition it will put a block on it to ensure the pharmacist triple checks the interaction. It will also block high/low dosing to ensure the MD is prescribing the correct dose based on age, diagnosis, or weight etc
Your wisdom is beyond your years. I really admire your humility and meekness - meaning your teachability and confidence in your abilities. You're so cool.
I love your videos. They are not jus entertaining. I also learn sth about health an disease. I just lernt bc of a new family doctor I visited that medicine is not a one was streat. Normally I went to the doctor, they give a treatment and I allways felt like the unknowing little patient. Now I have a physician who is eye to eye to me. I can talk very freely to him. It really changed my mind about medicine and health :)
The part with "advice for new attendings" where you say that attendings should be encouraged to ask questions I strongly agree with. I play a lot of video games like World of Warcraft where I have a leadership position called "Officer" and I always encourage everyone to ask questions if they're uncertain of something. "Rather ask one question too many, than one too few". Different scenario, same principle. Love your content, Mike!
Instead of "mistakes" you said "doing things differently to how I would do them". That sounded so encouraging but gentle (since you weren't talking about something that would be harmful like some mistakes), which is so much better for learning than feeling criticised.
My father and stepmom live on Canada. My dad has lived there for 8 years and my stepmom was born and raised in Canada. A "free healthcare" country. The wait times for anything beyond routine family medicine is so long that most people are on the waiting for years, many of them either dying due to their medical condition or suffering permanent negative health effects. Isn't socialized "free healthcare" great? 🙄 With this type of healthcare, there is no longer any incentive for doctors to provide superior service or the same service at a lower cost to remain competitive in the healthcare market, thus causing an overall decline, however subtle, in healthcare.
Addition to the last comment... Listening to you talk about how a doctor should treat you and what my patient rights are has given me a little bit more confidence that maybe this week I might stand up and go to the doctor I don't know I know the pain gets unbearable sometimes but I found ways around that with a hot towel etc but you are giving me courage to go and I hope I go LOL thank you
I had been a "on-site" trained pharmacy technician, and I loathe the two words, "prior auth" because this means days of waiting. It feels like a privacy violation that medical information needs to be approved by someone that isn't a doctor at all because the company doesn't feel like it is important. If a doctor says this test/medicine in needed -- that should be the end of the conversation with the insurance.
I was at a point in life where I no longer wanna become what I went for I feel like i wasted 6 years of my life knowingly I wanted that career for my whole life and than I realized that I dont want this for the rest of my life so I was going thru different career choices i'm glad I came across your video and other nurses and doctors, I now know where i'm heading to thank you and other nurses and doctors for motivating others who may want a different career path or just straight out of high school, thank you again

Hey Dr. Mike. I recently found your channel and I really love your content. Very educational and entertaining. Seeing you at home interacting with Bear is very heartwarming. I've started implementing bits and pieces of your advice and I can honestly say that you've really helped me. I've been going through a really tough time in life, but you've motivated me with your upbeat optimism to try getting better. Thank you, Dr. Mike. Keep up the awesome work!
Dr Mike, I know you'll never see this, but I wanted to second (or third or fourth or five-thousandth) the statement that watching your videos has helped me feel more confident going to a doctor. I've had a range of issues in the past that took upwards of 10 different doctor visits to finally find an answer, and it combined with the generally poor bedside manner of doctors I've met has left me with a severe distrust of doctors and disinterest in going to them regularly. But the information you give has really helped me better understand not only the issues but also the risks of not treating them (I use sunscreen a whole lot more now! And I use moisturizer on my neck! Bonkers, man!). At the very least, I managed to get a "yearly" physical this year, which is an improvement for me, haha. My only remaining question that, if you actually do see this, I hope you might answer in a RTC video, is how to actually go and ask for help AND STICK WITH IT. With years of distrust and what align very closely with fearful-avoidant attachment style tendencies, I have a disconnect with knowing I need help and actually going to get it. I've tried writing my concerns down so I don't forget, but somehow it never seems to solve anything. Even when I tried therapy, I mask too much in front of other people to really show just how much I'm struggling, and my own self-destructiveness gets in the way of getting help to overcome that self-destructiveness because I end up quitting. I don't have a good social support system anymore so I'm essentially trying to do this all alone. Do you have any tips on getting over that initial hurdle to get the help we need and stick with it?
I’m am SO glad that what I consider to be the most important topic in the world (peoples health and peoples active participation in their own health decisions) is getting such a great platform in you Mike! Footballers get paid millions a week to chase a bag of air around a pitch and while that important for comradely and mental health, pastimes etc, there is nothing more important than medicine and spreading awareness of this. As you say, you put peoples minds at ease. You are saying: yeah, there are some dicks out there who think they’re better than you because they have a medical degree; but where not all like that! I think what your doing for the medical community and for everyone’s patients is AWESOME!! I take my hat off to you, Mike! I tell some of my patients who are apprehensive about Doctors or who have had bad past experiences with medical personnel to check out your videos to a, put them at ease and b, educate them so they can understand what is an active dual diagnosis and treatment plan V what is being shoved down your throat by someone who thinks they know you better than you know yourself! Honestly, hats off to you. I’m so glad you have this channel to spread awareness and engage with people.
Hi Dr.Mike, I’m starting high school soon and I’m going to a school that specializes in medicine. I decided to go there because of you!! Thank you I’m really excited to start school again and learn more about the field and everything. love you and your vids:D
Dr Mike has taken my depression and cured me with meds of laughter thanks for the support and to be honest i dont go to the doctor bc i was in a abusive family that didn't let me. You helped me realize my health matters thanks again Mike
I’ve been disabled since 2012 and I got sick in 2010. I have learned to advocate for myself. That’s very important for patients to do. I was very afraid to do in the beginning. I know a lot of mistakes happened because of this. I have several chronic illnesses and chronic pain. For example a couple years ago because I was stable for a few months my specialist was letting the NP see me instead of him then I started getting worse and I asked the NP if he had actually read my chart to which he said yes because he had changed a medication and I asked if it would interfere with my other medication and he said it shouldn’t. I said well what about seizures. He said what seizures. I was confused. I said I just asked if you have read my chart and you said yes. He said yes I have. It’s in my hand. I said well then do I or don’t I have seizures. He said well do you? I was shocked. I said well if you read my chart then you should know that before you prescribed me medication. He said well do you have seizures. I said you should know that if you have read my chart. He had no idea. I was beyond mad because he in fact had no idea. I made him leave and get my doctor because the NP had prescribed me a medication for 2 months that I should have never been on because I do have seizures and he apparently had never paid attention to my chart.

I was thinking about being a doctor when I was little but then I changed my mind but when I started watching your videos 10 years later I wanted to be a doctor again
Hi Doctor Mike In January of this year I fell and broke my Hip (The Femur not the pelvis) and I was amazed that the day after surgery they came in my room and said, "Ok lets get you up we need you putting at least 50 percent of your weight on that leg." I was at home 2 days later. I've recovered excellently and now 6 months later I'm walking with no assistance (No cane or anything). The speed of the recovery amazed me and I asked the physical therapist about it and he told me these days the goal is to get you up and moving ASAP, In contrast to the previous time when they had you stay in bed a while. Did using the affected leg so quickly speed up recovery?
I wanna be a doctor some day, might seem impossible since I got kicked out of school because the bullies got to me but if someone who is older than 80 can get a diploma then anyone can get a diploma and study medicine
You are so productive in your life , doing what you love or interested in, helping so many. And here I am just getting distracted from my studies. I am 28 and going to be 29. And yet, everything seems very confusing. I wanted to be a doctor couldn't, I realized that only And only those who can work hard and control their impulses at early stages of life could become doctors. Anyway. Just let m e tell your contribution means a lot. 😊🥰😍
What I want to know is how you manage to cram in so much Anatomy knowledge, I am currently doing a short course in Anatomy for general interest and I have Kidney Disease and its generally good knowledge to know how the body works ,I have always loved how body systems work ever since I saw the insides of a dead mouse when I was a kid yes I know we are not mice lol , on my course I have been looking at the arterial system and wow its a lot of knowledge, how in hell do you remember it all? You seem like a great doctor and you are very funny love the videos.
I really wish to have Dr Mike or anyone with this knowledge to check my conditions. I've been suffering with many things though years and is just became more difficult and hard to deal with. I had many doctors to see me, had multiple different diagnosis, I even stayed in hospital in different departments and in the end send home with just prescribed very strong painkillers, and the final diagnosis was "possible thrombosis". I felt that I wasn't being treated seriously and being in doctors office I felt like they not really listening to me and dismiss my symptoms for not possible because of my age. Different symptoms started appearing thought years and I broke down. I become depressed and developed social anxiety. I feel hopeless now. I don't remember when last time I wasn't feeling pain and opening up about my struggles cause panic attacks. I know I need help/advice with multiple things but right now I honestly admit that I'm scared. There, I let it out..
the 9:30 point of this vid. one of my local g.p's was the former member of the local parliament, i knew his name and hs face, didn't like some of the policies but he was a decent guy and a good physician.
Watching your videos has made me want to become a medical doc-... no, just kidding. But, like you, I teach university students (I'm that other kind of "Dr", the PhD kind), and I love to see your passion for teaching and knowledge dissemination, and your approach of integrating different activities in a way that benefits both activities.
Vet tech... And many of us make assumptions on how much a person is willing to pay for their animal, which is a big mistake: they would not tell them about certain treatments because they assume the person can't or won't pay it, when actually they really don't know
Please double check!!! I had been prescribed both a benzodiazepine and a muscle relaxer and THREE doctors didn’t catch it. Then I went to an adults only all-inclusive resort as a graduation celebration, so I added alcohol into the mix. How I didn’t die from this is a mystery
Here's an idea, if you had a proper universal healthcare system like we do in Australia, or in other places, you'd almost never need to worry about pre-authorisations. My doctors don't need to think about whether I'm insured or covered for xyz. They just write the prescription, order the test, whatever. It's covered by default in most instances.
To be honest, I'm just here to see Bear. Just joking😉. I recently discovered you on RU-vid and have been binge watching videos and I think that you would be an awesome doctor to have. Keep up the great work and be blessed.
@@sheikhhamdanbinrashidalmak5586 How are you? Do you accept us to be friends and remain friends for a long life? I love the people of the Emirates, especially the Maktoum family 💕
American here. About ten years ago, I was working a minimum wage job, working about 60 hours a week, but still couldn't afford health insurance. I got an eye infection. That little, red eye cost me an entire paycheck, plus some. Imagine what a serious medical issue would have cost me.
I wish all doctors held your philosophy of treating each individual human and your level of communication. That is what makes great doctors. It seems more and more I find doctors who treat every patient like a textbook case where it’s cut and dried and you don’t feel listened to or like your problem is getting addressed. Thank you for sharing and teaching the way practicing medicine should be done!
That balance you achieve between work and RU-vid is great. We can really feel you're practicing and living medicine. Opening such windows on fascinating quality content is what the internet should be more about.
I am 14 - 15 and I want to be a doctor in the future, and Doctor Mike is the person I aspire to be. I love the fact that you love your job, and are eager to learn more. I have learnt so much from this video and many others! Great attitude to work, despite pressure! Thank you so much :)
"Learn from your near misses. That's the best way, because no one gets hurt that way." That's great takeaway. Don't have to be perfect, but also don't get all the way to the mistake.
