I start repairing my free boat (Catalina 22) only to find it has more damage than originally thought. The whole deck and cabin top is too rotten to ever bring this boat back to safe sailing condition. Sooooo I have a plan!
Stay tuned as I go in a different direction with this boat build. Thanks for watching and please subscribe, comment and like!

You can buy a 20-22 footer for $1,000-$1,500, I sold a good Santana 20 with trailer for $1,200, so if you enjoy the hope of bringing that boat back to life, keep on doing it, but if you want to sail, get another boat.

Love the optimism! Towards the end of the video I was thinking trash it, but you've managed to get something really rad out of the whole thing! Looking forward to seeing the transformation. 🤙⛵

Thanks! Hopefully I can make it into something to go explore the local lakes, rivers and other waters. I only have a $400 budget to get it done.... so we'll see what I can do.

smart. the deck is absolutely critical for a sailboat. but a little trawler or launch... why not?

Catalina have a well earned for exactly this problem. That boat can be fixed. It's just a matter of having the will to go that far.

After cutting into the deck I found that someone before me had used concrete, some kind of hard glue, uncured epoxy, more crappy regular plywood and other failed attempts to fix the deck and cabin top. It was horrible so I went a different route. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

So are you ready to separate the deck from the hull, opening up the deck and recoreing everything around it and regelcoating? It's tedious but not really that bad of a job on a smaller boat.
@Youcan2Adventures
@Youcan2Adventures 2 года назад
Negative on that.... I am semi disabled and I am doing this all alone outside with no cover and with no help. I am also on a very tight and small budget, so adding up the costs for that kind of project will be way too much just for the materials alone. I already sold the rigging and keel which gives me the money to at least make a small cheap trawler if I am careful on expenses. :)

@@Youcan2Adventures I know a few of those challenges myself. There is a way of doing the deck/hull seam other than fully separating them but it's a rough fix at best, fiberglassing over the joint. But still removing the toerail is involved.I was actually thinking of looking into high density expanding foam for a core replacement myself if my girl needed it, thankfully she turned out to be solid.Oh double check if you'll need some ballast with her, I know that a trawler option was my alternative on my islander 36 if her keel was too messed up, she was still going to need some ballast low in the hull becouse of her desing.
@Youcan2Adventures
@Youcan2Adventures 2 года назад
@@PennWolfsSailingAdventures I will hold off on adding ballast as I need to splash it first to see how she floats and how much rolling she will do with the new top and other modifications. My Ericson 35 I used to live on almost got turned into a trawler to do the great loop, but I wound up trading her for a Coronado 34 with shoal keel before I could.

Are you now or, will be in the DIY Terminal Trawler FB Group? Dan is quite active there.

Yes I am in the fb group and I have talked to him on the phone recently about my boat. I also talked to him a few years ago when I lived in Wa state about his "Miss Kathleen" ... a very great guy Dan is!

Have you had the C22 for a long time or did you get it recently? Seems like the rot would be fairly obvious before purchasing.
@Youcan2Adventures
@Youcan2Adventures 2 года назад
It was a free boat... I went to pick it up and minutes after showing up I was driving away with it.... I knew it had SOME rot, but as I show in other videos did not know how bad it was until I started trying to repair as someone had tried to repair several times with different materials with horrible results.

@@Youcan2Adventures Ok, I understand your conundrum. My advice is don't turn it into a money pit. Been there...done that
