Was skeptical about benefits of Bark Box on the 400. Tried it with, then went back without. Now the Box is back on. Buried in the wood, the Box gives it that little extra grunt it needs to pull on through steady.
My 562XP 28" came with a proper length scabbard and my Echo CS-620PW with 27" bar Shipped with a 24" scabbard. I have never run a 400c but would like to get my hands on one someday. I love my 545 quite a bit. I love my 562xp but I am currently having problems with it. Dealer Flashed it but I havent had a chance to run it yet. My Echo is also awesome!
My good buddy has a 400C, and while it is a (really!) nice saw, I wouldn’t trade him my 620PW or 800P for it even if he offered. I like simple, user serviceable saws.
You can actually turn up the oiler more, by knocking the pin in with a punch. It will allow another 1/4 turn or so past where the pin stop is on the oiler stock.
@@In2investing so I’ll fill u in as to why the pin- it’s because of the Europe only allows so much oil flow on their saws because if the environment so they they put the pin so other places and open it wide open. There ya go my friend.
I agree, I turn the oil pump wide open on all of my saws. I don’t use Stihl oil these days - to expensive. I am surprised a Stihl dealer did not load it up with Moto Mix. Mine does. I use Echo Premium Bar oil. It cost me $12 minus my 10% discount at Home Depot. As for bars, I went to my local Stihl dealer to get a new 18”, .325, 68 bar and chain for my 025 Stihl and they have been back ordered. I did get an L4 Light 18 in .050 gauge with an RS chain but that was the best I could do. I wanted a 3006 18 inch scabbard but they have been bac ordered. I am still waiting on some parts for my 024 from a month ago. I am not buying a Memtronic saw. Any saw I buy will have an adjustable carb on it. I have a blown up 362 CM in my shop and it will have an adjustable carb on it when I finish rebuilding it. A user smoked the crank, piston, cylinder, bearings and seals in it. I have to split the cases and replace everything. It will be a several month project.
Tim. I just bought a Husky 550xp and the dealer gave me the scabbard at no cost. Maybe that is something that is handled differently by each dealer? Just thought I would mention it. Great content and keep up the great work. Best regards
I ported my 400 and it's a screamer. You only lose 7cc's over a 462 but you save hundreds $$$. My Husky 435T can produce too much oil and I would not recommend (a) buying a 435T - they suck or (b) to open the oiler wide open -- you'll have a mess to deal with.
I would get that saw ported and modify the oiler by pushing the lil bushing in to get max flow. As of your purchase you are only at 3/4 max flow. ESPECIALLY since you are running a 28" on it. Just my worthless .02 cents.
Well, I spent the better part of an hour looking for the oiler adjustment on my 400 eventually gave up, trying to pull the little plastic cap off. Thanks for showing me where it is.
How’s the 400 running that 28” bar? I have a pair of 400’s, one with a 20” ES bar and one with a 25” light bar. Been thinking about a 28” light bar so I can stand a little straighter when limbing. I installed double bumper spikes on both, but haven’t tried a bark box yet.
Good demonstration of the oiler adjustment, but beware. Some brands seem to work opposite. Good thing is, at least the ones I see, they are marked with +/_ . I don't run mine wide open on shorter bars, just the longer ones; after all oil is not cheap either. Cottontop, did you ever make the video about how you blend your fuel mix?
just got a 400c for my first chainsaw 2 weeks ago . got the german 25 inch bar on it the chain has the green link . we got a wood boiler and i appreciate nice tools from when i did construction . also got a county line 25 ton splitter . so i have good tools to keep us warm . i'm looking at "Clogger Zero PRO Light and Cool UL Chainsaw Chaps Calf Wrap" ... are they goods protection ? being cooler/more comfortable seems nice . y'alls thoughts please ? thanks , jeff
When you asked what size saw you was getting my first thought was 400 but then i was like he might get something bigger. I dont know how this works for you but i would love to see you work with some Echo saws.
I've got all these saws, tim knows that as well. The "other" saws work and perform just as well. I've got a 572 that i took to tims class previously and there was NOTHING else besides tims 400 that could even come close.....
Since watching this I've set the bar oiler on all the saws here on max... i always had them in the middle but said what the heck.... good advice Thanks
Do you add a high output oiler when you run that 28 inch bar? I have a ms400c and the chain looks a little dry with my 25 inch bar. If so, where did you find the high output oiler?
What gauge chain are you running on it with the 28” bar? I really want to get a 28” light bar for my 400 and everyone keeps saying it’s not meant for a bar that long but here you are doing it. Are you happy with the performance of it with the 28” bar? Thanks for your input and content contontop
Good looking bread cutter there Tim glad to hear an outlet for where you can actually get things I'm going have to look them up see if I can get phone number at least do you know if they have a website
Tim...Not all Stihl pro saws are made in West Germany. The 261 and 362 are made in Virginia Beach. Only the 400 and up are currently made in West Germany. I had an old 036 made in West Germany and it was so far superior to my 362 there is no comparison. Unfortunately someone like it better than me and walked off with it on a volunteer job I was helping out on.
Have them all .but 462 is best saw period and best sounding with stihl saws they neeed the suspension kit upgrade barkbox, and oil filters .to be running rite .but 462 hands down best saw for daily tree work ..
Have you ever tried a 462 to compare to others? Such as, is the weight difference between the 462 and 400 offset by the increase in power of the 462? Curious because I'm really close to pulling the trigger on one.
I'm exactly in the same situation. Been debating between the 400 and 462. 462 is just a bit heavier but has about an extra 0.5 hp. Tim clearly loves his 400 as he just bought another. Also 462 just sounds meaner in my opinion
@@cubic3d1547 I agree. I like the idea of the lightweight saw and how quick it revs but the weight increase for the type of cutting I do now wouldn't bother me terribly if it pulls harder and oils the longer bars better. Doesn't look like Tim has any trouble oiling a 28 though.
Big deciding factor for me was vibration. The 400 has the same vibration level as a 261. Hands/arms don’t go numb using the 400 for extended periods of time. I cut red oak 20+ inches no problem with it
@@shadowdestined2992 Yeah that is something else I have heard about the 400. I think the lower weight i.e. mass helps with both vibration and as @William Jordan pointed out revs up quickly.
I have Echo, Husquvarna and a Sthil 462C and it's by far my favorite saw. Echo seem to run just like all their other equipment where it's very finicky and eventually stop running. We just cut fire wood but this 462 seems to rip right through everything.
My opinion, which isn't worth much, lol, Husqvarna is smoother, Stihl more reliable over the long run, but the best saw is the one with the sharpest chain. In the end, power is so close it comes down to sharpening skills
I’m not saying you are right or wrong but my Grandad logged all his life and he told me one time a Stihl salesman came to his job one time and immediately left after he saw they were running Husky saws. Things change over time though.
I bought a 251 CB-E last month. It's a sweet saw for homeowner and the easy start is great for my old a$$. If I was a young man, I'd get a 400C and makes piles of chips.
Glad you love the 400 Tim. Our local ACE hardware can’t get rid of the one they have but also can’t keep a 500i in stock. I bought the 500i and it is nice but I love my Husqvarna’s more.
@@cotontop3 i have thought as about buying one my self. I have been around the older 400 series of saws my whole life my dad has a MS 440 that has a tuned carb it is a screaming saw
Did something happen to your old one or you just want a new one? Man I would love to have a 400 i believe. Enough power to pull a 25 inch bar but 2 pounds lighter than anything comparable to it's cc range. Just sounds awesome. Wish I could justify the purchase right now
I bought a Stihl saw called a farm boss 45years ago the dealer said to me after it was run in if it didn’t start on the 3pull bring it back as there would be some thing wrong with it,I gave this saw to my son years ago and he still has it.
@@cotontop3 you’re probably right. It was my first Husqvarna saw I’d ever bought, but I’ve always run Stihl stuff and always bought from him since he carry’s both.
