Thanks for that , I did a first aid course some years ago and probably I need to do a refresher course as methods change. Only yesterday, I was breaking branches to make a fire and one sliced through my finger, luckily I had my first aid kit . So you never know.

Your first aid/medical kit looks good - covers the basics, plus more. The wound closure device that you showed towards the end is similar to a "butterfly closure" used for smaller lacerations. A very useful improvisation. Thanks for sharing.

I'm finding your medical and first res-ponder knowledge very interesting Vee. There were some great ideas and guidance there. No stone un-turned i would say. A huge thanks for the mention of low blood sugar levels. I have literally just realized what I am experiencing after hard training. Nervous - anxiety - dizzy and super weak an hour or so after. Really, it's just dawned on me. Thanks for that. I will do something about it now. Well, fantastic video. All the best for the week. Mark.
@Wildsoul62
@Wildsoul62 7 лет назад
Thanks Mark and really happy to hear you have found the vid interesting. As for your post workout symptoms, yes it could easily be related to low blood sugar ( fast carbs good to replenish glycogen levels). Also check your hydrating before during and after the workout as dehydration can make you feel weak etc too. Hope you can get rid of the symptoms :-). Best wishes to you, Vee

I always carry mine whilst out. Had to use it recently when out photographing trains. I lost my footing on some loose granite chipping and bumped my head badly. I KO'd myself for a few moments and broke my glasses. My head was pouring with blood and needed stitches from the local minor injuries unit. My first aid kit came in useful as without it i'd have had great difficulty in getting away from where is was otherwise. I'm also Diabetic so I carry Insulin pens with additional vials and needles plus a blood meter too. Dextrose comes in very handy when blood glucose levels drop. They can be a lifesaver!
@Wildsoul62

Hi Mick, that sounded like a nasty fall you had but glad the FAK helped you out. Yes I have had to use my glucose on a number of occasions when diabetic friends have gone hypo on me! a.t.b. vee

well thought out kit Vee , this is the best video I've seen on FAK. if I could make one suggestion it would be to add a hemostatic agent e.g. quick clot or celox .it will stop bleeding quite effectivly in places turniquets cant or are not otherwise nessesary .
@Wildsoul62
@Wildsoul62 7 лет назад
thanks Terry and wow glad you rated the FAK so highly! I used to carry quick clot and decided to not carry it in favour of tourniquet and direct pressure method but i will have a think about it ( I carry it in my car now). thanks for watching a.t.b. vee

Very well thought out first aid kit Vee. I seen some items that I'll be adding to mine. Great points about the hazards of rushing or not paying close attention to what one is doing. I'm finding that takes more effort at 63 than it did at 53. I had excellent first aid training when I was a lineman, but that was many years ago so I should take a first aid class to refresh those skills. Take care, Ossie
@swanseamale47

Your kit is very similar to mine, I don't have the tic remover or the tea tree oil, but I have a space blanket, steristrips for wound closure (or thin strips of duct tape)and a few field dressings.

Thank you for a great video. You had some really good ideas that I'm going to use, including that wound-closure piece of gear. Hi Stella, so glad you found some useful ideas in the vid :-) Having had first response training has given me considerable useful knowledge as to how to prioritise and treat most traumas and that gives me some assurance that I can at least sort things if shtf re injuries but hopefully that will not happen! a.t.b. vee

I use neat bleach on burns it stops the blistering and helps with the pain! Wash it off after 10 mins tho. I hope i only need to use a few plasters now and again from my kit. As you said at the start of the video, most accidents happen when your'e tired and not paying attention to what you are doing. P.S Welders gauntlets for tending the fire ;)

Thanks for the look see into your first aid kit Vee. Always interested in what other people are carrying in theirs. I have a Maxpedition FR1 pouch kitted out much the same as yours. That home brew wound closure device is brilliant. I wonder how long it will be before one of the big medical supply companies gets hold of that idea and starts making it commercially. Thanks Vee and all the best from across the pond.

Hello Vee Very nice to see, how the medical colleagues carry nearly the very same stuff in their FA kits. I am the medic/first aid instructor and EMS First Responder from the Czech republic and I have the nearly same kit I carry with. (SAM Splints, CAT Tourn., even teh Tick Twister :-) ... just carry sterile injection needles instead od sewing ones) Thank you for your video. I have added the Burn Jell / Water Jell to trat the burns - I can really recomend. If mistakes.. I am so sorry for my English, I am not a native :-)

Good kit. Check out Mors Kochanski's and Paul Kirtley's kits. Great to see the T-tree oil. Have FFD / Israeli bandage with CAT. For light I use petzl e-lite so hands free. For irrigation, I use 10ml syringe (much better). Bag balm (in little pot) great for skin, burns and fires. I keep back-up whistle and signal mirror in kit too (latter good as mirror to check self).
@Wildsoul62

In addition to your excellent kit I would suggest Anginine, a pair of arterial clamps small but effective, or paper clips. Steri strips and super glue, glucose monitor and a pen of nova rapid. + a benzo/ or a opiate to reduce anxiety/pain. (i Noticed you mentioned codeine) and ventolin.. These Items would also fit in that great kit of yours. love your vids.
@Wildsoul62
@Wildsoul62 7 лет назад
Hi thanks for the suggestions of extra kit. I think that those things you suggest maybe useful if I was trekking or out with a group as they cover possible asthma and diabetic issues, but I don't feel they really are that useful to myself when travelling solo. I don't carry super glue for a number of reasons and prefer other forms of wound closure. Thanks for the suggestions though. a.t.b. vee

Hello Vee, Thanks for posting this. The greater likelihood of needing a first aid kit is not in the woods, but on the road. The tip about using duct tape is brilliant. Kudos to the person who sent that to you. I will prepare some. SERIOUS GRIPE: It's a torch, not a flashlight! Do you keep your camping gear in your car's trunk? When will the UK become the 51st state? With either presidential hopeful, we're doomed Mr Mainwaring, doomed! Yrs, similarly qualified and ex-RAMC
@Wildsoul62

Hi, I agree re the road and fist aid kits. I carry my huge responder bag in the car so that def covers any casualties I may have to treat. Did I say flashlight.. hahaha as usually I call it a torch.. must be a youtube moment! Mr Mainwaring would be appalled! lol! a.t.b. vee

Bravo! Your training shows because you prepare for real trauma instead of dragging a bunch of band aids around that are useless for any real injury. Skip the band aids when you can use a bandana to wrap up your little owie until you can get home and have your mommie kiss it. Grow up and get the Vee-Kit. You will be glad when you stick a hatchet in your knee.

Hi Vee, Some useful tips in your video. The wound closures will come in handy when members of the public get sliced up by the blades of my new Mavic pro drone when it arrives:) Don't worry, just joking! Also the plastic bag/ water for submerging burnt hands is really useful. On more than one occasion I have burned myself whilst tending the camp fire. Not seen any drone footage yet. Have you crashed it?? Sandy
@Wildsoul62

hahahahaha Sandy that was such a funny comment and yippee re the Mavic Pro.... it looks so brilliant and the fact its so small.... fantastic! My drone is not crashed...phew!... Hi Vee, good kit there. The credit card sized magnifying glass can be used as a sucking chest wound gauze, same with the tescos bag, this is great for impaling wounds or the very unlikely event of a GSW in Civi Strasse. I would add another rolled up set of gloves as you will be surprised how fast you have to change them out with heavy bleeding and multiple victims to care for. I would ditch the heavy gauze you have and try to secure an Israeli Defence Gauze, mid sized. Vacuum packed and idiot proof to use under pressure. Also, try to get hold of a British Army tourniquet with fast securing pipe, again idiot proof and can be done one handed. If you need a hand securing any of this, PM me and ill get you some from work. ATB Moose.

Wildsoul Vee Thank you. That's impressively light for such a comprehensive kit. Presumably the Sam splint and tourniquet are in addition to that. Cool! Nice to see a logically thought out kit, appropriate to activities. Strikes me the most useful part of your kit is knowledge, which you clearly have and weighs nothing.
