Really liked this setup simple and easy. and cover for your swag. must be a lot cooler in the morning with the cover.
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS 15 дней назад
g'day mate! Yeah cheers, I tend to only set this much stuff up on the longer stays at camp, but it works well indeed. The cover helps in the cool mornings as it keeps the dew off the swag, which makes it slightly warmer inside on a cold morning, and also keeps it dry, so can pack it up straight away without having to wait for the swag to dry off.

G'day Bradley... Yeah, it is quite a bit of kit. I only take it all when I know I'm going to be in one spot for an extended period of time. When I know I'll be moving from place to place... I definitely cut right back on what I take 😊

Hi Bluecat! Thanks for taking the time fmto say g'day and leave a comment! 🙂 Yeah can totally understand your concern... Solo camping is great, and does give you a chance to clear your mind and truly relax, but youndo want to feel safe at the same time too. Perhaps try a popular campsite, but during the week instead of the weekend. Popular campsites finger quieter during the week, but there is usually still a few people around for you to feel safe. 🙂 Once you do that a few times, I dare say your confidence will grow and you will look for more secluded spots 🤠

Hi there! Single woman in America here, and I have some of the same anxieties. What helps me is to scout potential sites when I am not camping, and spend time there as a day trip beforehand if possible. Being comfortable with the layout and knowing where things are helps me feel (and look) more confident, and that helps to not draw attention to myself as someone who might be easy to take advantage of.

I’m a pretty slim guy that could sometimes pass off as a girl from the distance. And my camping gear being all pretty light weight may suggest as such too. I tend to keep to myself when camping so nobody gets close enough to find out, and a bug net over the head further obscures my gender. Haven’t had any problems with campers as they keep to themselves and don’t come over to check other people out. Pretty sure they feel the same way about their privacy too. This is usually when camping at 24 hour rest stops that don’t have many other campers around. If camping at tourist destinations like paid campgrounds, it’s usually even safer as there’s a care taker that can call for help. The safest with regards to human strangers is in absolute isolation on slightly off road places that deter 2 wheel drivers. Most people who are able to afford a decent 4wd and the fuel to get to such locations are usually more than financially sufficient to go and steal from other campers. Would be rapists are less likely to range out so far either when their more likely targets are found on easier to access hiking trails near cities based on my own safety research too. (Yes I do fear for my safety despite being a guy. I am slim build and not very tall and may be mistaken for a woman as such (many a person have been surprised when I’ve turned around and gone against their expectations, especially when compared to the bulky blokes in Western Australia. I do carry a small knife to alleviate my own fears, but have not encountered any problems ever.)

I gotta be honest, when you showed that knife you have for protection I heard Paul Hogan say "That isn't a knife, THIS is a knife". Crocodile Dundee was so big here in the U.S. in the mid 80's, I think I was 15 when it came out.

G'day Rick... yeah mate, that knife is VERY similar to the one used in the movie. Can do some serious damage, that's for sure! The movie was also huge here in Australia too mate, still is! A aussie classic that one! But yeah, in some parts of Australia mate... you definitely still need to carry a knife like that... - glad you enjoyed the clip mate... and hope all is well with you over in the States... great to have you here! Yeah, exactly Ed, one of the best things about camping... is seeing how others do it, and learning or being inspired by other peoples setups 👍 This particular setup is more for longer stays, when travelling in the outback, I tend to not set all of this up if it's just one night obviously... 🙂 Hope things are going well with you mate!

We are currently buying a bunch of things to set up for our first camping trip. We're loving this video and keep referring back to it, so we can set it up like you have (but with a big family tent, not a swag). We have decided to buy a Bushman Fridge but we're stuck on the solar setup right now, so pricing things. It's a bit overwhelming with the sheer amount of these things on the market, hence, why we're watching vids like these and your's has been the best so far. Thankyou!

@TheWandererAUS 9 месяцев назад
G'day Candy! Thanks for taking the time to say g'day and leave a comment! 😀 Thanks for the incredibly kind words... I really appreciate that! The Bushman Fridge is a great option! It should serve you well! 👍 I have actually updated my solar setup since this video... I now run the 300w KickAss Folding Solar Panels. They have been brilliant! A little on the high side with costings, but the output you get from these panels, I feel, really justifies their price... I never worry about my dual battery level when those panels are setup... even under cloudy conditions, they still pump in enough power to charge the battery. 😊 I am putting together a little review video on them, that I will have out soon, so might help you out... but obviously, go to the KickAss website and check them out... I recommend them to everyone now (and nope... I'm not sponsored by them 😂). Thanks again for taking the time to leave a comment, and to check out the vid! Any questions, feel free to ask away 😀 Cheers, Rob 😎

Cool setup mate, thanks for the tips 👍 Security of items has always been a major concern for me when leaving camp unattended, it's bloody inconvenient packing stuff up when you're just going for a couple of hour look around, but more inconvenient to find things missing when you return 😒 Maybe turn the hub into a super security safe somehow 🤔 You'll be a rich man if you figure out how 😉
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS 2 года назад
Hi Marty! Yeah, that has been something I have thought about... putting a padlock on the zips somehow, or a ziptie... I tend to just try and judge the area I am camping in as to how safe I think everything will be... 99% of the time, fellow campers and travellers are fine, it's mainly when in what feels like a slightly dodgy area do I tend to pack things away before going on a hike or drive up some tracks away from camp. Great to hear from you mate! 🙂

I have a mesh ground sheet, swag, tarp (have recently purchased a gazebo and en suite tent), camp chair and table. Much of my stuff is from Adventure Kings. I still need to look into a Stable Table, though. But I'm nearly set for my dream set-up. Just need to add a portable power station as well, so I can do RU-vid videos while on holidays. 😁 By the way, I have a sedan, so not quite the 4WD set-up that you have.
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS Год назад
@@irenedehaan Wow! That's a great setup! Well done... As for Adventure Kings gear, I think their stuff is great for working out what you do and don't need for each persons particular setup. Nothing worse than buying something really expensive for camping, then realising that you never actually use it! So the Adventure Kings stuff, I find, is great for trial and error stuff. Sounds like you are pretty much ready to rock and roll! Don't worry about the sedan aspect of it, the list of places you can get to for camping in a sedan is just as long in most areas as a 4WD. Great to hear from you again Irene! Rob 😎

It would be cool to use it as a store room like you are, but with stuff stored towards the back with a cupboard and all that, then you can quickly chuck your outside stuff in the tent and add a lock to make it secure so you can have a less anxious mind when away from the camp.
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS 2 года назад
G'day Ellena! Yeah, that's the ideal setup I think 👍 Have been hunting for a good quality cupboard type setup that packs down really small to give this a go 😊 A lock is a good idea too! I am probably far too trusting for my own good 🤣 Only a few spots where I have camped that I have felt a little anxious and cautious of those who are camped nearby... Thanks for the comment and the ideas! Love it! 😎 Rob.

Try barbecue heat beads and you won't need coals...also they are a much more consistent heat . Yeah I know ..it isn't the "outback" way ..but it saves a lot of mucking around with getting coals out of a fire to heat your camp oven . Great tip about the white tape on the zip .

I would totally stack empty milk crates inside that empty tent and use it for waterproof storage. The crates can double as storage for transport. Add a bench/stool for changing clothes easily. If you are in mosquito country, that would be a great place to hang out in the mornings and evenings when they are swarming.
@TheWandererAUS

G'day G'day! That's a great idea! Yeah, milk crates or large storage boxes is a great idea in there! 👏 The hubs are perfect for hiding away from the mozzies! Also when out, in really remote outback QLD... getting away from the flies can be a challenge... going into the hub is a great escape for some peace too! Cheers for the crate idea... that's a great one! 👍 Cheers, Rob! 😎

I have a pretty similar set up like yours, main difference I don't use the gazebo hub. (Not a bad idea just a little to much for me 🙂) I generally have 2 Walls with my oztrail gazebo... I also use a oztrail monsoon fly, which attaches via the Velcro and hooks to the oztrail gazebo, adds allot more roof/shelter space. It's a good lean to for the swag. Which inturn gives you more space directly under the gazebo (if that makes sense) ** storage idea! - Oztent camper cupboard. Comes in 2 sizes, single & double. Lightweight but really sturdy. Supper quick & easy to set up to. The double size would be best suited for you.

This is a delightfully unique camp set up. I love your bed, er swag. Sorry, I'm a Yankee. Though the swag looks sufficiently bug netted, don't the insects drive you nuts in the gazebo? I've never been to Australia, so I don't know your flying, biting, stinging, bloodsucking insect situation. I've heard about the spiders, snakes, cane toads, rabbits, kangaroos and emus and any dozen other poisonous creatures, but mosquitoes are what I hate. I walk outside at dusk and you can hear their dinner bell go off, so I'd have that gazebo thoroughly covered with midge size screen.😂😂😂 Let's be real, my idea of roughing it is a stay at the Ritz Carlton with slow room service. Your camp does look welcoming and comfortable, though. I can't think of any other use for your spare room other than storage, except to make it your bath/dressing/storage room. Set your bathroom tent up in there where all of your equipment would be out of sight. Of course, if I went camping with you, you'd be thinking I brought my entire household with me. But there's no danger of that when y'all's on the other side of the world and there are lots of camp grounds throughout the state of Michigan. Though the most beautiful are in the Upper Peninsula, where it's a bit wilder, especially around Lake Superior,v the largest of our Great Lakes. However, the mosquitoes are fierce. Not as bat as the mosquitoes in Atlanta, Georgia. My friend who lives there assures me their mosquitoes carry knives. And speaking of knives, the knife you keep in your swag is a pretty serious piece of steel! My first thought was Crcodile Dundee. But I'm American, so there's that.
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS Год назад
Howdy doo! Thanks for taking the time to say g'day and leave a few questions... more than happy to answer them for you 😀 Only once have the bugs really annoyed me in the gazebo, and that was way out in the outback just after some rain (they come out in their BILLIONS after rain) - Mozzies and things are worse in some areas moreso than others... riverbanks and beaches, they are hard to escape, but usually only around sunset are they particularly bad. You can buy a midgee/mozzie surround for the gazebo... but us tough Aussies don't need that! hahaha Yeah, that little side room is pretty much still a storage/change room... and recently, I haven't even bothered setting it up! A lot of people have commented on this set-up, saying that I literally have brought the house along with me, but this setup is only for extended stays... sort of 4 or 5 days or more in one spot. Otherwise, this setup gets cut back considerably! Would love to get to Michigan and the great lakes... they look stunning! I have only done the east coast of the USA (Florida up to New York). That knife in the swag, is pretty much the same one as in Crocodile Dundee... a great knife for protection... kinda like in the movie! haha - Have only used it in anger against an animal once... and hopefully never again! Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for saying g'day too... really appreciate that! Hope to hear from you again! Cheers, Rob 😎

@@TheWandererAUS take a year to come to the US and wander. Michigan has the longest coast line of any state. And much as I love it, the Pacific Northwest is wonderful too, especially Washington State and Oregon. The geology is incredible. From western Montana through southern Idaho, eastern Washington and northern Oregon along the Columbia River, you can see all of the evidence of the Missoula floods. There are also a lot of volcanoes, active and ancient. It's fascinating, if you enjoy geology. I also recommend northern California, which is very much like the PNW only more dry. Going back north, Montana is gorgeous. I love the Rocky Mountains. They are truly beautiful, though I think they are at their best in Colorado. I love Denver. However, you do need to drink a lot of water and take things slower because the altitude is no joke. Did you get a chance to camp in the Appalachian Mountains? They are so very ancient, worn down but beautiful. They were part of a mountain range that continues in Scotland, it split when the continent of Pangaea broke apart. I will natter on about such things for hours. It was lovely to read your reply. I hope you have plenty of chances to go camping.

@@rowdysgirlalways Some of those destinations sound amazing! I didn't get to do any camping at all on my last trip over there... but by the sounds of it... I need to get that sorted out! haha I didn't know about the Appalachian Mountain range that re-appears over in Scotland! That's unbelievable! Hopefully heading out camping this week :)

Hi mate. Thanks for the video on your set up. I'm curious about your gazebo. My wife and I have had a couple of Oztrail 6m x 3m gazebos and they leaked like sieves in rainy weather. How do you find the Oztrail in the rain? We like to camp in the rain and don't ever cancel our plans for wet weather, so we've had to move on to a very expensive Altegra 6 x 3. It's a great bit of kit - completely rainproof canopy - and to be honest it would want to be for the price. Have you had any trouble with the Oztrail in the rain? Cheers. Craig, Brisbane.

G'day Craig! Thanks for the quiet mate! 👍 That is a shame you haven't had a good experience with the Oztrail gazebos. The one in this clip, I still use to this day, it has the original roof lining, framework etc. Similar to yourself, I don't let a bit of rain stop me from going camping either, but haven't had any leak issues with the roof or anything as yet. 3 years into owning this gazebo now, and it is starting to show signs of wear... So will look to replace the roof lining soon. Were you experiencing water pooling before the leakage? I put together a little tips and tricks video on the gazebo that might help you out 😊 a few people have found it to be useful... I'll link it here for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKdZ_ZveVws.html Hope it helps mate! Rob 🤠

Hey mate, yeah this setup is for when I do extended stays somewhere, when it is more than just a one nighter or a few nights, I'll set this up... far too much for a overnight stay... single nighters are usually just the swag and maybe gazebo depending on weather (to keep the swag dry). Glad you enjoyed it mate! 👍 More adventures on the way 🙂

awesome vid!! how do you find the gazebo hods up in wetter windy conditions?? Thinking of getting one as an extention to my awning, in hope to set up a base if i want to take the car for a day trip drive somewhere from camp. so would love to hear how its treated you the last couple years!
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS 15 дней назад
G'day mate! The gazebo has help up under some intense weather! Have had it now going on 4 years I think... still the original roof lining, original frame and ropes... its been brilliant. It really does come down to common sense and how you set it up... I did do a seperate video on the gazebo itself, with some tips for setting it up etc... but I reckon go for it mate... Shelter is one of the most important things at camp in my opinion, so going for a slightly more heavy duty and potentially more expensive gazebo is worth it I believe... as it's the roof over your head. Have had mine through crazy winds, plenty of wild QLD summer storms, and so far... touch wood... it's held up and going strong! :) Hope this helps mate! Cheers, Rob

@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS 2 года назад
Hi mate, no dramas at all. I tend to pick up my firewood from those little stalls you see outside people's properties. It is often the best as usually it's very dry, good hardwood. The bag stuff from the servos is just rubbish and burns far too slowly... On your next trip mate, keep an eye out for people selling firewood on the way out and buy some (always have cash for the honesty policy), and I guarantee you ... You won't be disappointed 👍 cheers mate, hope all is well 😊 Rob

With respect I can't really understand why you would need maxtrax if you are just going on a simple camping trip in a vehicle that is already 4 wd.
@TheWandererAUS
@TheWandererAUS Год назад
G'day elysian95, the area around that campground has some great 4wd tracks, so took them just in case I got myself into a bit of a situation... turns out I didn't end up hitting the tracks in the end. What really gets me, is when people drive around town with them on their cars... like they think they might get bogged on a major highway 😂 - I do remove my maxtrax, and well, everything on my roof when I'm not actually camping or on a trip. Hope you are well, and thanks for taking the time to say g'day and leave a comment! Cheers, Rob

G'day Will, yeah it is quite the amount of gear... It doesn't go on every trip, only extended ones... Sort of a week long etc that are quite remote with no facilities and needing to be self sufficient... I certainly don't set this all up every time... I barely take it all on most trips... But it is handy to have depending on where you are camping. 👍
