Check out my camping food preparation ideas for two weeks off grid in the Flinders Ranges.
I went all out on my food preparation for this trip, by writing out a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner for each of the days i spent camping off grid.
By doing this made my time away a lot more relaxing and easy.
It took away the guess work, deciding what I'm going to have for meals each day.
All i had to do was, get out my ready made menu and see what i had prepared for that day.
Simple and easy, just how i like to go camping.
What's very important to think about when planning out the food you want to take away when travelling into the State of South Australia from Victoria, is the fruit fly check points.
You cant take fruit and vegetables across the border.
Make sure you jump on line and check out what you can and cant take over the State border when it comes to fruit and vegetables.
Don't get caught out at the check point station, otherwise you will have a fine to pay when you arrive home from your trip.
I found it worth while doing a bit of extra food preparation work at home, that then gave me a lot more time to kick back.
What food prep ideas to you use to make your camping trip more enjoyable?

Hi Tim. Tourist information centres have leaflets on quarantine laws for all Australian states. Good idea keeping your supermarket receipts when travelling interstate to prove where you purchased fruit and vegetables. S.A. are the strictest. If you pass the disposal bin and get caught at the check point, expect a fine.

Another thing is even if you come into SA from a different border crossing or live in SA you cannot fruit and veg into the Riverland area. While there are no checkpoints from that way, just the disposal bins that rely on people being honest. Just a small fruit fly out break can shut down several properties and that grower's income and a lot are family-owned fruit blocks. The cost of controlling and getting rid of it can be well in the 10's of millions of dollars and can take months and months. From an infected piece of fruit. Thanks for bringing it up and making people aware Tim it's just a small thing most don't think much about.

Hi Tim, my lady and I did practically the same route as you through to SA, and the fruit inspector said “do you have anything to declare” and we said nothing that we know of , but please have a look and see if we missed anything, they then said “No problem, if we find anything you can’t cary into SA , we’ll just confiscate it, we had some nuts they kept, then we were on our way with zero issues, we also had honey confiscated at the WA border same deal, no fines.

Gday mate, I think you just got lucky. My mate has been fined and i spoke with a guy travelling with his kids on one of the stations i stayed on. He drove past the bin thinking he didn't have any fruit to throw out. At the same Renmark check point i went through, he handed the officer an orange that one of the kids had when he got to the check point. He was fined for that, he was far from happy, let me tell you. Good job on the fruit fly thing here in SA. If you go and do the Border track or are down in Nelson you can easily go across the border without really thinking about it as they're so close and the towns for resupply can be on the other side. I went through the Riveland one a while back and there was a line of cars and trucks going a long way back from the station so the wait was quite considerable. We haven't been quite so organised about planning our meals which usually means we have too much and a large mixed grill is necessary before we go home. I don't really see it as an issue though tbh.

Thank you for this great video, it gave me some great idea's I am planning a long trip for the 1st time with my 9 year old son in October (Sydney - Perth and back). I been looking on RU-vid for tips and tricks that are good value. So a 300,- Kings fridge for 2 reasons, 1 same price as a decent cooling box (I know.. WTF??) 2 that's the budget I have. Now I am trying to answer a simple (at least I thought it was) question, do I REALY need a 2nd battery or can I just use it as a powered Freezer when I drive (6+ hours a day) and switch it off with the car and pretend its a cooler at night? Would you know if that works? I use a simple cooling box (not powered) as my fridge. thank you for sharing your thoughts, I really enjoy your practical and down to earth tips!

With that fridge freezer set up, where do you store milk, cool drinks etc,? Haha, 1999 got caught out big time, the check point was closer to the border from memory, past thru Broken Hill, stocked up big time to be stopped at checkpoint only 70 kilometres max from Broken Hill, no warning at all. Had to go over to bins and dispose of or eat all we'd brought in Broken Hill. Some items we were able to keep if we washed or peeled the skin off, can't recall what though. I was truly peaved off as there were no signs untill the boarder to enlighten us. In contrast, same trip we arrived in Katherine, goes into Woolworths, Massive Signs saying "No fruit or vegetable brought here can be taken into Western Australia", 200 plus kilometres away. Wished Broken Hill had that awareness. Today, the SA checkpoint is so far from the border you can comfortably get everything eaten prior to reaching it, still think its redicuous though as all fruit and veg in Broken Hill is possibly derived from SA. Now, the Western Australia boarder far stricter again. This time we were prepared thanks to that notice in Katherine. Arrives at boarder, zero fruit or veggies, all compliant but during inspection one of the staff spots our hessian bag containing Jimmy's Thunderbox (shitter). He tried to confiscate it, I begin saying no, you cant take it, like WHY. He's claiming it to have contained potatoes in a previous life. I lost my shit, demanded to see site manager, whom goes through all the rules that hessian bags must be ceased because they may have contained potatoes plus they are plant based I looked him square in the eye and said take a good look at the bag, its the exact proportions of the Jimmy Thunderbox, it is screen printed Jimmy's Thunderbox, at what point do you think its had potatoes in it since production, it's staying in my car to retain said Jimmy's Thunderbox for hygiene purposes. He rants on, I shuts the door, it's staying, he makes a phone call, I leave with said item and had a real bad sensation each evening I set the Jimmy Thunderbox up for the kids to use. Wife made a new cotton bag on our return, hang on, its derived from plant base as well, best surrender pillow cases, sheets etc next trip.🎉

@@ianweal3081 yeah mate, it sure does catch a lot of people out. The road side signage began soon after crossing the border I must say though, the check station was about 10-15ks into Sth Australia. Fruit flies are a nuisance, so I can understand trying to control the number of them. The best way to avoid a fine is to check what is and isn't allowed ahead of time. Knowledge is to abiding by the law what peparation is to a successful trip. Another good option for food on the go is an MRE, or Meal Ready to Eat. You can store those just about anywhere, and they're fairly flat. For me, those would be what I eat if I'm out on an overland trip longer than planned, and when there isn't a restaurant close to where I'm camping. Never hurts to be prepared.
