2006.08.27 - Reading Festival, England. Setlist: [00:00]. Cemetery Drive [03:34]. Dead [07:10]. It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Deathwish [11:10]. Thank You For The Venom [14:42]. House Of Wolves [17:42]. Helena
Spreading his arms wide like, bring it on! Love Gerard and his sass. If you can stand up to bottling, you're tough - that's the whole point. One band a year at Reading gets bottled, usually the opener on the big stage. - stoopid tradition~
+Jaqui_0 Gerard is tough because he grew up in Jersey is I was there in stage and people threw bottle I would blocked them too and won't be scared I grew up in Jersey and I'm not kidding but alot people throw bottles and you get used to it
I love G's class attack "This is gonna go down as one of my very favorite shows of all time. I want to thank you so very much for that." OH and by the way, we won't be back until we're invited to headline, and they did.
mikayla gorelin Song: * it's not a fashion statement..* Reading: wait I thought this was meant to be the ghost of you... Gerard: *carries on like a pro*
@@BRUNOvsALADEEN okay how could black parade not be released yet at this point when they performed dead! And house of wolves, two songs from the bake parade?
@@THEJustinOfAllTime bruh they were playing fashion before 3 cheers, happens all the time bands sit on songs, nirvana played rape me in 92 and it wasnt on an album until Sept 93
besides that show was the one that wikipedia says that they played after slayer show and slayer fans throw bottles with pee and other stuff like that and they handle like pros, mil respetos a esos manes son mis idolos a seguir los cabrones
And this is why MCR was the band we didnt deserve. They get bottles thrown at them for 30 minutes but keep playing for their dedicated fans up front. Class
@@sonicobsessions947 they were already famous and well known because of their second album, but yes, I think much of the fame they got was because of The Black Parade.
When I was a teenager this was actually really inspiring for me... In my perspective they were basically being bullied but they didn't give a shit and scream to the crowd "Gime all your Poisson!". As an un-cool kid I loved how un-cool they were.
they always wanted to help the outcasts/bullied ones, showing that they were being bullied but still kept going harder than ever at this gig was a great example for their fans. i love them.
@@z0mb1e.g1rll Thank them for the venom. If you get enough, you'll become immune. As an adult who was chronically bullied growing up, I want you to know that it gets better.
I actually think this show was really amazing. I mean, everything started out horribly with people showing them their middle fingers, throwing bottles and pretty much every song being announced falsely, but yet they played phenomenally, showed them how much they cared aka did not care about their so-called haters and EVEN managed to turn the crowd around and ended the show with everyone chanting, clapping and cheering for them. If that doesn't prove that band was special, then what does?
Now that's how you turn an angry crowd around. The crowd got louder as the show progressed and you could see how the crowds negative attitude pushed My Chemical Romance to go even harder.
Gee has got the reflexes of a cat. I gasped when the bottle almost hit him at 00:23. I was really shocked by it. But I was so impressed at the way Gee took it in his stride. He's a true professional.
To anyone confused about the toxic crowd, in 2006 MCR weren’t too well received with the more close minded side of the older rock and metal fans. MCR played immediately after Slayer at reading that year, resulting in a high concentration of these people in the crowd. The more immature of the bunch were the ones throwing the bottles and cans. Edit: not to mention reading is overall a very toxic festival in general and acts get bottled fairly often
12:25 i love the way gerard looks at the crowd and smiles like "yall might hate me but i know that my bitches got my back" and then frank and ray sings. literal sass queens i love every single one of them, also what a horrible crowd ew wtf
People have to watch this show from beginning to end, it is truly inspiring! I respect any band who will keep playing at those circumstances. But tbh any other band would have back off or leave the stage with their egos broken but MCR keep playing. They're not eager to be popular or to fit in, they're pretty much used to be the outcasts. Is inspiring to see how by the end of the show people are clapping and singing along, it's like you're watching a completely different show from the one at the beginning. The way they played Thanks for the venom was so epic and Gee being as sassy as ever.
Thank For The Venom performance is when they were like "WE DON"T GIVE A FUCK ANY MORE!!!" that's everyone started to respect them. I cried by the end of the performance man, fuck that bullshit title emo, MCR. is punk rock. They have inspired me.
If you think that's impressive you should see Dillinger Escape Plan. Their guitarist literally broke a vetebrae in his neck on stage and still finished the show.
+ThatGamerGirl2002 it's a really stupid "tradition" at reading to throw bottles at bands it was even done to Panic! at the disco in their early years and they survived. - well Brendon got hit and passed out, when he woke up he continued where he started, but i think MCR handled it really well
Veronika Dohnalova Its from the fans from other bands before who fill up bottles with piss and throw them at bands they dont like. Disrespectful, really.
mcr has always encouraged fighting and never letting your "bullies" bring you down, and that is exactly what they did here. they got bottled and nearly humiliated but they kept the show going until the crowd had nothing to do but respect them. truly inspiring. this is why they're my favorite band.
When they start playing their third song (im to lazy to write it) and someone throws an orange bottle and it almost hits Gerard and he dodges and smiles like. *lil betch*
i accidentally clicked this video after promising myself i would stay away from mcr for awhile and then turns out cemetery drive was the first song and i was like......well shit.
I love how when they play Venom they seem to start enjoying the whole situation. Specially Gerard seems like he realizes the lyrics ('You're running after something that you'll never kill, if this is what you want then *fire at will*') are the perfect comeback. His wide smile at 12:27 says it all really :)
This is very similar to Queen's first concert in 1974 at Sunbury festival, Australia where they were heckled and booed by the audience and apparently sabotaged their equipments. Freddie Mercury noted to the audience the next time they return there, they would be the biggest band in the world and boom they did lol
Gerard actually said the same thing when he asked Brian May to play with them when MCR returned to headline Reading a few years later. The parallel is part of why May agreed to do it, and he wrote later on his blog that Gerard reminded him a lot of Freddie.
The reason the screen was wrong was because they were actually supposed to play the prompted set but decided last minute to change the set in order to pull out some of their heavier songs for the raging fans that only cared about their precious Slayer being before MCR.
Such a badass show, you feel like a sense of triumph at the end. They don't back off they keep pushing through, playing louder and harder and by the end they have reclaimed the stage to themselves.
why do ppl think its painful to watch this just bc of the crowd throwing bottles? its clearly one of mcr's best performances bc ppl were dicks and the band wanted to show just how good they were
ru really asking that question? yeah of course they did a great job of dealing with the situation better than anyone else could have & no 1 is questioning that. but 4 most when u love a band & have high respect 4 them it's hard 2 see them being bluntly hated on & treated with gross amount of disrespect.
@@natalie_rose2861 seeing as they were one of the biggest bands at the time, how most of them were approaching 30yrs when this happened and how they were obviously enjoying themselves, i have a hard time understanding how watching this performance could be so "hard" lol. i think they can manage
+Bia you know, how the crowd was booing and throwing bottles of piss at them in the beggining and how, when they got to Helena, they managed to win their cheers and everything. Gerard talks about this set all the time in interviews, and it's amazing that they got to come back in 2010 and headline the whole fucking festival with an even bigger audience full of fans.
I was there in the crowd watching them when I was 16. It was my first of many Readings to come and I was so excited to finally see them live. I remember getting angry at people who were throwing bottles for being disrespectful. Probably could have got punched in the face but I didn't really think about that at the time. Haha! I enjoyed Slayer (who were on just before) and MCR so I never understood why people felt the need to bottle bands. If you don't like them, just walk away and come back later. Anyway, amazing show! I miss 7 years ago so much. They were even more amazing when they came back in 2011! Fans will always love and miss them. Thank you so much for posting! Great memories. :)
Yeah I feel you. I never saw them live, we're the same age. I remember it being frowned upon to listen to MCR. But I did so anyway, they were just good man. I understood WHY people disliked them but it was such a dumb reason. I'm still into them. I'm surprised it's acceptable NOW lol. Time changes shit, but I will always love what I want to love. Aight, peace!
This is a band who doesnt cancel shows just because the crowd is bad, instead it wins them over truly mcr is a legendary band, musicians nowadays are no where near the greatness of this band
11:02 frank blowing kisses 11:25 gerard starts doing that too hahahha 11:30 something happened to frank's guitar? But the silence was cool for some reason 12:25 im fangirling so hard 13:20 ray toro jumping 13:33 his attitude says everything
The good thing is they went on to headline that festival 5 years later and got a great crowd response that time around. I just think metal fans just got so butthurt and defensive when the emo movement got huge around 2006.
+Andy Benji agreed! I went to the reading festival they headlined in 2011 and everyone absolutely loved them and the look on their faces when they realised that was awesome!
I heard they changed the set-list to a heavier set-list because they were placed on a stage that a metal band played before them, hence why they were getting bottled, still no reason to bottle a band, fuckers.
+Mrs. lesterfuentes Their 2011 show, Gerard is so much more confident. You can tell in this one that he's a little less sure of the stage, but in 2011 you can just see how free he's acting. He's quite stiff here.
+Madison Pahl Kinda hard to be free and give your best when they say you suck. But 2011 is GREAT & Brian May playing with them is like him saying he likes them.
This was posted 8 years ago and the last comment was 12 hours ago... I LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE RELEVANT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!! Loving them since 2007 when I was 12 FHUKIN y.o ... Loving them until I'm dead.
It’s really just because of the full festival lineup. The crowd was toxic because they followed Slayer, who have older metalhead fans and some of them are very closed minded about newer rock bands, especially some as operatic and theatrical as MCR
Ethansics Nope, it’s just because it’s Reading. They piss bottle every act that’s new to the festival and pretend it’s some sort of tradition when in fact it’s just that reading festival, and also reading in general ,is filled to the brim with subhuman scum.
I love how Thank you for the venom totally sums up what they were trying to say to the mob. Awesome concert the crowd made them prove themselves which they did so well. :D
House of Wolves is by far the most underrated My Chem song. The Light Behind Your Eyes is my favorite and is also extremely underrated, but at least people remember it for being one of the My Chemical Romance songs that makes people cry every time
I love how in the ending of Helena Gerard made the crowd raise their middle fingers as they shout the band's name. It was like the crowd were telling them fuck you but actually, it's the other way around. Gee was like 'REMEMBER THE NAME MOTHERFUCKERS! AND FUCK YOU TOO'
Let this show be a lesson to all the people who get bullied and hazed. They'll do it whether it's right or wrong. The sweetest revenge is to keep going with a smile.
