MY CHESS TOURNAMENT, ROUND 1 VS 2300 FIDE MASTER! | 2022 Pacific Coast Open!
I hit Chess Expert back when I was a kid as I surpassed a rating of 2000. However, I walked away from competitive chess and pursued college athletics. However, I am now making a return to OTB chess and am making it a goal to break 2200 and become a National Master. This Hippopotamus Defense chess game was against an FM level player, being the first round of my recent tournament. I hope that both you Hippo chess players and non-Hippo chess players enjoy this one. I am not ‪@themagnuscarlsen‬ or ‪@GMHikaru‬ but I hope you learn more about chess strategy from both my good moves and my bad. This is a game in which I played the Hippopotamus Defense, got a good position, and I'll let you see what unfolds after that. The goal is to break down chess lines, chess ideas, chess theory, and chess strategy so that you can improve at chess fast and beat higher rated chess players.

Thank you for sharing this with us Solomon. Not many people would share a first round loss, but this was certainly just as instructive as all your other videos on the Hippo. I hope your other games had better results.

Great video! Your Hippo videos helped me up my game in a major way - bumped a 100 points in the last few weeks (on CWF). I can be clever and aggressive and win sometimes with various openings, but my weakness has been in game adjustments when my first plan fails. I feel like Hippo has grounded my fundamentals a little bit and I can jump off better from the foundation principles. Also, the move by move analysis is invaluable! Thanks a ton!

Thank you Jake! That's awesome you've been improving with the Hippo, it's a great system and can be played at all levels. Great work man keep it up.

Very instructive Hippo game. This game is an excellent example of what can happen if you push the wrong pawn. This video has motivated me to start playing the Hippo. First, I will rewatch your other Hippo videos to refresh my memory on this opening.

Thank you brotha! Ya the Hippo always gives you solid middlegame positions but then it comes down to which pawns to push and which ones to hold back. Let me know how the Hippopotamus Defense goes for you!

"I'm 7ft 1" Such a cassual thing to say lol. Also if your free can you make a video about neo catalan because i have a chess district tournament that I'm taking part in and no one really made a video about teaching neo catalan so it would mean so alot to me if you made a video on it

Great example how to play the Hippo.Pawn on d6 and e6 it's a key.Play c5 or f5 on right moment.Dont,play e6-e5 or d6-d5 ,because you are loked the bishops.Sometimes you must play e6-e5,but this is another story.Very sadness,because ,in this game white playing to passive.I'm a big fun of Hyppo.Thanks for this video.because is not to much videos or books with Hippo.I'm find 4-6 books and this is it,no more.Thanks!.

3-pawn centers, like the Austrian, are supposed to be one of best counters to the Hippo. In the Hippo chess book I have next to me, by Alessio De Santis, I'm almost certain he recommends you shut down that 3-pawn center before you finish setting up the rest of your Hippo, and maybe even only end up in a semi-Hippo depending on how it goes, because you don't want the 3-pawn center to become stronger. Some examples were doing one of the c7-c5 or f7-f5 pawn pushs early, to start breaking it up, attack their center's corner, or push your pawn up to the center of it. You can also push one of your center-pawns up to their 3-pawn, with d5 or e5. And a 4-pawn center is supposed to be extra bad for the Hippo, which is why it needs to be shut down before then. Maybe the book didn't say the following, but I almost always start my fianchetto on the side of my opponent's first center-pawn push, so I can be defended and ready to break up a 3-pawn center that may start on that side. I'm nowhere near as good as you, and this video taught me things to think about earlier in the game, so I may have good outcomes later on. So take it for what it's worth, but I think I'm relaying accurate information, I was just reading the book to check, and I've been trying to genuinely learn all the little details of the Hippo that this book has to offer. Great game, and I'm glad to see you use the Hippo.

Great thoughts Johny! Ya I tried to get after the three pawn chain with f5 but should've continued to break it down with c5 as well. Thanks for the thoughts those are correct and good points you made. New Hippo video dropping in a few hours as I played it again in game 2.

Thank you brotha! Glad you enjoyed it, hoping people can learn from my losses and not just my wins. I think sometimes we just tend to study the greatest wins of all time or the greatest games under a certain opening. However, seeing losses is important too as it can show us what to avoid in certain opening systems. Wishing you a great week man!

Well played - at one point in the game you had a better position with black against someone around 300 points higher than you. So long as you learn, you haven't lost. Ever tried rugby? Big here in the UK, not so big in the US but growing. Basketball means you'd have ball handling skills- and 7'1" means - in rugby terms - you'd be a 'big unit' 🙂 Back to Bird's Opening. Track down H. Danielsen v T Luther 1999. Crazy position after white's 14th move.....

@TheChessGiant 2 года назад
Thank you Andrew! Was a fun game which I definitely learned from even though I lost. And ya I haven't played Rugby as it's not very big in the U.S. but it seems like an awesome sport. Thanks for the Bird's Opening game as well.

Your bishop could have used the D4 square before the knight got back giving you access to the C, then A file 3 moves later. Then you'd have some more moves with your strong bishop on A-8. Am I seeing anything? New player, but I see continuation. Edit - Didn't consider white Nxe5, long losing pawn game for black. Disregard.

hey, i just turned 17 and im around 1450 do you think its possible for someone like me to hit NM in 5-10 years? i practice around 1-3 hours every single day and ill soon buy a course.
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 2 года назад
Totally! Although, I must warn you it will take a lot of work! But it seems as if you are ready to commit to that. I would say do a ton of tactics programs and become a machine at combinations in long lines and variations. Also, gain a chess opening repertoire (I've recently went on a Hippo journey myself) and study the heck out of it. Finally study GM games and learn from courses which you're planning to do already. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!
