In this video, I'm showing you my compact in-ear monitor rack setup that I use, as well as give you tips and advice on how to set up your IEM rack to fit your situation. Not all of us have tour vans or trucks. I have to fit my gear in a little sedan. This is the way that I do it and still have a really nice in-ear monitor rack.

x32 in a giant rack (yes... I have a minivan I can lift it into)! But it does house wireless Iems for 7 band members (6 mono, 1 stereo, all Phenyx) and wired Iems for Drums and Bass. I do 3 subsnakes (stage left, stage right and drums) to keep things clean. Most gigs we do our own sound and hire an operator but for big gigs I bought a dedicated split.

Scott, Another awesome video as usual! I was looking for a splitter solution to FOH for larger venues. I saw your S8 solution in your previous video, but was going to be space challenged since I also use the XR18 in a 6U rack for mixing, IEM's, and my buddies back up POD pro. This is a fricken godsend! One ETH cable and a 16 channel snake to FOH and we're golden! AND...It also only costs a little more than half of the 2x S8 solution! Thanks so much!

Thanks for sharing! I have a Midas MR18. I totally understand space concerns! You can possibly use a 8 space shallow rack which is taller but might be ok because of depth. This way the splitters would be easier to access, incase a wire fails. You would also be able to access your mixer easier too. I'm trying to create a fly rig that is carry on for the MR18.

Loved this - We actually use the cheapest available transmitters/receivers that use TRS instead of XLR from Mixer AUX to transmitter so we have to use a two XLR to TRS splitter then split the L/R signal at the receiver end (no mix mode option when you only pay £90 for a IEM system) It's super fiddley to set up initially but has saved a good grand. XR18 Behringer splitter Custom patch bay for USB/Main LR Out/additional inputs is a very good idea though - might rack-mount that! - Do a video soon.

Hey Scott, your videos are super helpful as I put together my rig - thank you! One question: what is the advantage of using the right angle xlr connectors in the outputs versus the straight xlr connectors, especially since they restrict access to the ports and electric plugs below?
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
It just depends on what works best for you. I don’t need access to those ports, so it cleaned it up a lot nicer. Probably didn’t need to do it, but it made stuff fit better
@jeffreybeutels7663
@jeffreybeutels7663 Год назад
Really good explanation, thanks Scott! I have the same opinion on the "I do not want me or anyone to have to be inside the rack itself or touch the mixer in or outputs. I worked with 2 signal splitters (Behringer ones, 1 input and 2 outputs) and for the aux outputs I worked with a simple D-type hole panel and Neutrik XLR-feed trough connectors. Any specific reason you went with those 2 ART boxes for that purpose?
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
Just for making it more compact. It’s easy to split the signal that way. We go into the input, and directly next to it is the output. Instead of having long tails hanging out or another 16 channels for outputs, it just seemed easier 👍

Recently discovered your channel and subscribed; thank you for producing such clear and helpful content! My band is getting started with IEMs. We currently have an analog mixer that we take to some gigs because those venues (small bars, etc.) don’t really have decent equipment, and no sound guy. We’re now ready to move to a digital mixer. Since we won’t need splitters if we’re using our own mixer as the FOH system we were thinking it’d be smart to use two smaller rack cases rather than one big one - one with our mixer and IEM unit(s), power conditioner, etc., and a separate one with the splitters. Then when going to a smaller venue where we’re basically doing the FOH mixing we’d leave the splitter rack at home. When going to a venue with their own fully capable mixer and sound guy we’d brung both racks. Your thoughts on this approach?
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 6 месяцев назад
Definitely a smart idea!
@ericthompson9791

So I have doing this stuff for bout 30 years. Perfect Logic and Engineering Scott. This is exactly the setup and logic I recommend. No matter how much van space you have you can always optimize space and weight. My current setup with 2 exceptions. For back track, just plug the X32 R usb into a computer . It is also an audio interface. Saves conversion, space and the need for other equipment, just send it out Aux 1-2 (or other aux out). Also, for an extra bang of weight and space savings....don't use analogue stage snake if you can afford it, get the SD16 or S16 or two SD8 even better. Again I liked the vid and forwarded the link as a model of ...this is how you do it.
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
Thanks Eric, I appreciate it! :) and yes I definitely would rather do usb out for the tracks. One band I do that in I plan to, and with the other one the other guy made the tracks and they are already on an iPad. But that is good advice! I’ve been looking at the SD16 and S16 and stuff like that. But I wouldn’t be able to “split” the signal when we need to send the sound to FOH right? Probably 85% of shows I have to bring speakers and provide sound, but for the live shows where they do have a FOH guy, how would the signal split to them if I used the SD16 or something like that? I would definitely upgrade if that was possible. Thanks again for the comment 🤘
@ericthompson9791
@ericthompson9791 Год назад
@@ScottUhlMusic Hey man, , In my view, analog split is still the way to go, I feel the SD8/S16/SD16 over AES just as a stage snake can be useful. Just to make the stage more manageable but not as part of the split configuration. Its just a lighter less bulky stage snake. Doesn't help with the splitting the way I use it. You are right the split happening right there in the rack is pretty good. In the old days we used "SPLIT SNAKES" , if you think a 16 snake is a pain, try a split snake. Supposedly using the "Direct Out" feature of X-32 gets you a thru with less than .85 ms of latency so in theory we could use the X-32 outs as the split. Couple reasons I have not done that, 8 outs is not enough , and introducing an AES stage box adds more latency , not much but supposedly another .25 ms I think you are on the right track.

You can run phantom power with it. The way you have it setup, you are giving FOH the control of Phantom Power. The outputs on the back of the S83way are Isolated, but the front is direct output. If you ever want to use phantom power from your end you would need to come from the direct out to the X32, but this would mean FOH no longer controls phantom power. These are designed this way on purpose so 2x 48V powers are not sent up the same cable.

I was wondering if you had considered replacing the 2x ART3 patch units with a single RU like the ART P12 or adding a shallow shelf (case hardware) and mounting these via velcro strips or cable ties? What about adding a single RU blank panel between the 2 ART S8's as a spacer (ease of accessing plugs) and to neatly add labels for the S8 above and below?

I mean, just the sound, not amount of channels etc. I'm using the Shure psm200 and looking to upgrade. You can eliminate the splitters and associated cabling if you use a Midas DN4816-O hooked up to the ultranet out put of the X18. you can use the p16/ ultranet banks on the X18 mixer to send whatever you want to FOH via the DN4816-O. You get the X18 XLR's out and an additional 16 XLR outs from the DN4816-O. Just did this, and replaced my splitters and associated fan outs. much cleaner and simpler now. mono ears = tears.

Man, I fell down a rabbit hole and watched about an hour's worth of your channel. Great work as always. Question for you, so the Art S8 because of the way you wired it won't allow you to send phantom power through the isolated outputs on the back side (inside of the rack) however to get the mics working your FOH would need to enable it on their end so the direct output can pass phantom back through the input channel. So for the X32 Rack do you still have phantom power enabled for the channels that need it and it doesn't cause any interference or anything to your IEMs cause they're isolated from the 48V the FOH is sending to your mics? I'm in a situation where sometimes I do my own live sound and sometimes we split off to FOH. In those situations by default I leave phantom on for my Drum Overhead and Hi Hat mics cause my bandmates plug into a Presonus Stagebox that goes to a Studiolive 32R via AVB/ethernet cable. But if I bring my rig out live, my better bet would be to just use an S8 for my 6 wireless mics in my rack and then carry a stagebox with a snake that has dual outputs or 2 tails. One tail can patch into my Presonus 16.8 NSB and the other can go to FOH for them to do whatever they wish.
@ScottUhlMusic

Hey Scott, great video - thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have a Soundcraft mixer I am using right now with the ART 3 way splitters, and the XLR inputs on that mixer are on the front... Do I see a 90 degree XLR connector lurking around inside (the back in your case, going into the Behringer)? What I am looking for is at least a decent quality, dependable patch cable (twenty of them actually) to go out of the Art splitter on the front, and into my mixer on the front. Hi there Scott, I hope you don't mind if I slide into your comment section to suggest some improvements to your system to improve on the cabling even though you never asked for it. (my apologies if you "do" mind 😅) I was thinking something along these lines: Front (from top to bottom considering a 6u rack) - empty (or maybe a blanking plate or grill or a racklight to replace the now missing lights from the furman unit) - empty (or maybe a blanking plate or grill so it doesn't look so empty) - Sennheiser EW300 iem - Behringer x32 Rack back (from top to bottom) - furman power conditioner - art 3-way microphone splitter - art 3-way microphone splitter - empty -empty - art p16 patchbay (instead of those 2 patchbay units) ---------------------------------------------- - So I was thinking to go with 1-foot xlr cables (without 90° bend) between all the xlr-inputs to the two S8 3-way splitters - two 1-foot xlr-cables to go from output 1-2 to your in-ear system - connect output 3-8 via xlr to the art p16 patchbay (flipped so the inputs are facing inwards) (input 11-16) that sits at the bottom of the backside with 1 foot cables - Then connect the TRS outputs 1-5 with a TRS to XLR (1 foot) to input 6-10 - Then, since the furman is at the top row and is deeper than the S8 3-way splitter, you should be able to plug in your sennheiser wall wart with no issue (i think) - You can then run the cable from the sennheiser Wall wart off to the side and into your IEM and do the same with the behringers power cable. - You could also run the ethernet cable off the side with the unused xlr ports of the patch-bay and if I'm not mistaken, you should even be able to velcro your router to the floor of your rack for transport in that area (maybe, worth a try). It might be a bit of extra cost for the cables and for the rack mountable patchbay but this way you have a very self-contained, "set up and forget", sturdy with no moving parts (unless the wall wart falls out of course...) rack that is easily accessible from the outside with no need to even stick your hands into the deep darkness of your rack...unless your wall wart falls out that is.....but we already did that joke so....oh yeah and to retrieve your router from the inside of your rack. So if I didn't miss a very crucial little detail that makes this entire idea unusable...this "might" improve your build...at least in my eyes but that is obviously up for you to decide. 🙂 Thanks for reading.

Could not trace the issue, until I tried moving the power supply’s from the AT3000 and Zoom from my Furman M-8 to a power strip about a foot outside from the rack. Can this really be my issue? 13:00 The reason you cant get Phantom power to the mics is because you use the wrong outputs from the ART. Direct needs to go to the Behringer. FOH needs an galvanically isolated output. Not only because you are in control of the Phantom power for your mics, but also and more importantly because this way neither one of the mixers (FOH and yours) can send Phantom power to the other one. And FOH also cant send Phantom power to a mic of yours that doesnt need it. Just a safety measure. Yes, the output is on the wrong side of the ART unfortunately. Just turn The ART Splitter around, Get another 1U ART patchbay and you're good to go. Makes the Rack bigger yeah and of course your version works. Just some food for thought. Otherwise very very nice of course.

Thanks! And yup I have learned this since this video. But it was the only way I could make it compact as I am now out of room and need to fit it into my compact car. I have a portable phantom power device if I need it so it works great 👍

Does anybody know why a single unit has two antennas in the back and a double deck unit that is like one unit in one has two antennas in the back is 1 and 1 for each side?

It depends, a lot of them combine the two systems to the two antennas. But it just depends on the system

@@ScottUhlMusic so if I use a combiner does that mean I have four antennas

Those MCM cases are gar-bahge. Brittle plastic that breaks easily. Trust me.

I’ve used them for years without problems. My entire band uses them. I disagree personally. I will say that you definitely can get more sturdy stuff for sure, which will definitely be heavier. So it’s up to the musician to decide how much protection vs how much weight 👍

Some cables work great, others not so much, for instance my XLR extentions great, my hossssa splitter cable sucks, so much noise.
