A look at my Doctor Who DVD Collection. And yes folks since this was shot both The Web of Fear and the Underwater Menace have been added, as if I could live without them!
I'd love to see an updated version of this video where you go into depth with each story and give your opinions on each, although It might take more than an hour to film which I can imagine would be annoying, but i'm really curious about your thoughts for each of these stories
@@pwskelly where and how, i am just starting and i like the single episodes more than the collection box sets even tho i have the season 23, and im looking for the gray looking dvd bu ti only find non gray for some epsidoes, where did you find them
+Andrew Dexter Thank you :) Ah yes, VHS..,sigh...so many happy memories. I still have my entire Doctor Who video collection, I refuse to get rid of them. They may be worth less than muck in monetary terms but the sentimental value is through the roof. Maybe I'll do a vid on them some day. Cheers.
I did have a complete collection myself but they are slowly getting replaced with the blu ray collectors box sets. You have a wonderful collection there
Great collection of doctor who story I have alot of the doctor who dvds that you have got and I have the original version of spearhead from space and the animated second doctors story part from furry from the deep and the underwater mennies
Absolutely amazing collection! I'm trying to work up to getting every classic story that has been released, generally finding whatever edition I can find and then to get every edition that has been made, the bug bear of my collection is 'The Dalek Collectors Edition', released for the 40th anniversary with Daleks Invasion of Earth, Resurrection of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks, pretty cool limited edition to own but it just doesn't look right!!
Thanks mate! Yeah I never picked up that 40th Anniversary Dalek set, although it was tempting. But as I already own three different copies of Resurrection & Remembrance, it would be a tad unnecessary. Good luck with the collection!
Super collection! Unfortunately here in America we only got a few of the DVD boxed sets. When video tapes were still being manufactured, I envied the U.K. having those really nice-looking tins with the videos inside. Always wanted that "Trial of a Time Lord" tin with the wonderful cover art.
Thanks, yeah I have that Trail tin and it always took pride of place on my shlef, a lovely set, have very fond memories of getting & watching that and the Dalek tin with The Chase & Remembrance, good times! Cheers.
One word. Phenomenal. Great DVD collection, just how on earth do you track em all down. I don't really collect the classic anymore. I am more of a pick your favourites, very good episodes. Not seen every single one. But ah well. I do love the classic retro episodes. Think if I had to choose a favourite classic doctor then it would have to be The Seventh Doctor. my mother knows someone at her college and well one of her colleges owns a large stack similar to that. But he has a big Tardis wardrobe door to put em in. Ooooh. Show off. But a cool idea, if you have the room. Really good video. Wish I could own that many. Question who is your favourite doctor and why? An who is your favourite companion? Mines Ace, K9. Sarah Jane.
Great collection! I've nearly finished mine, need all the special editions though. I assume you'll be picking up the underwater menace ;) I love the classic series
+Alex Chambers Great stuff, the Special Editions are well worth getting, the icing on the cake of you collection if you will. Underwater Menace sits happily on my shelf at this very moment. I also love the classic series. I have come to realise there are actually very few things that I truly LOVE in life, classic who I have no quams with though, I love the shit out of it ;) Cheers mate.
+Z Universe If you're a fan of the classic series and want even more stories, i would highly recommend you pick up some Big Finish stuff. They are very true to classic who, although they are not for everyone so I'd recommend picking up one of them at first!
Whoa...so jealous of you! The best Dr Who Classics that I've seen would be Pyramids of Mars, The Time Warrior, Horror of Fang Rock and Remembrance of the Daleks...
Ha cheers! All good stories, my favs would be The Myth Makers, The Daleks' Master Plan, The Highlanders, The Krotons, The Mind Robber, Inferno, The Sea Devils, Planet of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons, The Deadly Assassin, Warriors' Gate, Attack of the Cybermen, to name a few.
Where do you get all the Classic Doctor Who DVD's/Box Set? I am looking to start collecting them & including New Doctor Who DVD's too. I have some New/Nu Who DVD's but ... not all of them yet.
To answer all the irrelevant comments I’ve just seen, 1-The web of fear was not bought at the time of recording 2-The Underwater Menace was released in 2015 3-Marco polo does not exist, all four (or six) episodes are missing 4-Yes I think we know the f.o.e& the d.a are in the wrong order. Get over it. 5- he doesn’t prefer the new series over the classic series’s 6- The p.o.t.d was released September 2016, the time of recording was 2014😂 7- He was collecting in 2002 so he had an opportunity to get the original editions aswell as the special editions
Um... Yeah. The guy above is right. 'Marco Polo,' is 7 episodes long. All those episodes are missing. And you have a condensed half hour version on the DVD, full of telesnaps. If episode 1 of: 'Marco Polo,' got recovered, everyone would know about it, and they'd be talking about it
Respect!!! :-) I wish I could afford to do that, sadly I'm limited to the collection of an extremely good specialist DVD rental shop, which unfortunately has significant gaps in its collection due to being cordoned off and all but closed for some 18 months after the earthquake we had here in Christchurch 5 years ago. :-( I'm tempted to finish their Dr Who collection for them. Do you lend your DVD's to other people? ;-) Would love to see the Beeb revise "Lost in Time" in view of the recent rediscoveries and also give "The Crusade" its own release/reconstruction. What's your preferred reconstruction route, animation or telesnaps?
+kiwibeca Thank you :) I am sorry to hear that. I know your kidding, but the last thing I'd want to do with my who DVD's is willingly put them in the grubby mitts of a tellurian! I would also like to see Lost in Time revisited, there is so much more that could be added, especially in terms of documentaries and I would welcome a solo release of The Crusade (with recon AND animation options). My preference is for recons definitely, I want to see the closest possible version of the originally broadcast episodes and reconstructions are the best way to do that by far. I enjoy the animation too, if they wanted to do The Crusade with animation, I'd welcome it but my default for viewing is always recons, loose cannon have done some sterling work over the years. I only wish the beeb would release some official reconstructions of lost episodes, I mean why not? People would buy them for sure. Cheers mate.
+kiwibeca Oh yes, Underwater Menace has been added, shame about the credit-less reconstructions but you can't expect much from bbc worldwide. Well except a cynical cash-grab from Doctor Who fans that is.
Jack Snelling No, I elected not to buy it back in 03' as it was basically a repackage of Dvds I already own. It was very tempting, but if I did pick it up it would open the floodgates & i'd end up buying the amazon exclusive sets put out a few years ago & all the recent repackaged Doctor collections too! Thanks!
I want to get some Doctor who dvds for my sister. She owns none of them. I was wonder what dvd have the earliest episodes possiable to buy. I want to stay as close to the very beginning of the whole Doctor Who series as possible but I'm confused on how the list/order them. So can you help me?
myvoodooglowskull Hey, yeah you should buy her the Beginning box set, it contains the first 3 ever Doctor Who stories. After that the individual releases of The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, The Sensorites and The Reign of Terror will complete season 1.
He asked about DVD's to buy for his sister, Marco Polo is not on DVD since it doesn't exist. There is the cut-down recon on the beginnings box set to plug the gap. Just cause' I'm a "whovian" doesn't mean I have to go into pointless detail for no good reason, I simply answered the question the gentleman asked as concisely as possible.
I've been wanting to get some Doctor Who DVDs lately, and I've been noticing that there's two kinds of covers. When I go on BBC shop or any .co.uk site,They have the DVD covers I want, with the roundels and whatnot. When I'm on the BBC America or Amazon, the covers are different. So I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get any specific dvds without having to use European money...
If you're American buy them from the bbc America shop and amazon. Make sure there the region 1 releases because If they are regions 2 or 4 they will not work on your DVD player unless it is coded for all regions. Hope this helps!
Why don't you want to use European money? I mean it converts to and from dollars automatically in the transaction.. I'm pretty sure the shipping (and maybe import tax?) costs are the only real problem for Americans buying from the UK.
Although It converts, the DVD's won't work for American DVD Players if bought from the UK because we use a different type of DVD coding so he can't just buy from UK
I have one word for you: Computer. It's super easy to switch regions in one of your computer's media players, and you could even rip the dvd and stream it to your Playstation 3/4 Xbox 360/ One / Apple TV / Roku/ whatever you use for watching video on your tv. If you have a smart tv with USB, you could put it on a thumb drive. Also, there are region free dvd/bluray players out there. I bought Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog from the US, and it worked fine on my computer. I just copied the folders on the disc, and just like that, I had a region free copy.
Doctor Piggott Without knowing what you have mate, I've no idea, I would just get a selection representing each doctor and see what you think. Say..The Beginning Box set, The Tomb of the Cybermen, Spearhead from Space, Terror of the Zygons, The Five Doctors, The Trial of a Timelord, Remembrance of the Daleks would be my recommendations off the top of my head. Cheers.
Hi, all I can say is follow your dreams mate! Well I guess it depends on what you think is a lot of money, as I have been buying the DVD's as each one has been released since at least 2002, so the cost has been spread out over the years. which makes it affordable. Cheers.
Thank you for replying! And I live in America so from what I've seen they are much more expensive here. I've seen all released Classic episodes online already but owning them would be great.
Danny Yeah, it sucks they cost so much more in the US, I also understand many titles are out of print now and fetch silly prices. You'd be better getting some from Amazon.co.uk, will be a lot cheaper. It's definitely worth owning them, the special features are superb.
I'm starting a Doctor Who DVD Collection but the biggest problem is I'm in Region 1 land, so some of the DVDs are out of print which the BBC think is a good idea.
+Hudson112 Yes I do not envy you guys in region 1 land, bad enough they deleted a whole lot of who titles which have now skyrocketed in price, but they've gone and done it again! So unless your willing to part with a wad of cash you'll be left with an incomplete collection. It's really not fair since here in the UK, all the DVD's remain in continuous print and tend to cost a helluva lot less as well. Cheers.
I'm trying to start of a collection of my own, but i want to know where did you get those DVD, can you help out? I really like you're collection and I hope i can grow one of my own! :)
Hey, That's cool it's fun collecting Doctor Who DVD's. I got them from a few places as I've been buying them since 2002. I used to get them from Woolworths or Virgin Megastores and then moved on to getting them online, from play.com and HMV. They are fairly cheap and easy to get now you can get them instore at HMV or Fopp in the UK or probably easiest on Amazon.co.uk, reasonable prices there. Good luck with your collection :)
Jackie Sandoval No worries :) Yeah Amazon is your best bet, Amazon.com if you want the US releases or .co.uk if you can play multi region discs as they are cheaper there.
the episodes that still need to be released before our classic collections are complete: marco polo the crusades galaxy 4 (available on the aztecs special edition) mission to the unknown the myth makers the dalek's master plan the massacre of s.t bartholomews eve the celestial toymaker the savages the smugglers the power of the daleks the highlanders the underwater menace (coming out soon) the macro terror the faceless ones the evil of the daleks the abominable snowman fury from the deep the wheel in space the space pirates real time dimentions in time downtime (coming out soon) death comes to time shada (available on shada) the curse of the fatal death the hartnell years the trouton years the pertwee years the tom baker years the collin baker years daleks the early years cybermen the early years doctor who bbc two night and the new series: the doctor who experience matt smith the doctor who experience peter capaldi
well you know what they say "you learn something new every day." and also "never say never." please do not reply with an angry comment i was just trying to be funny.
Pretty much the same as my collection, just missing 1 special edition (Vengeance on Varos) not sure if I will get it? Guess you have Spearhead from Space, Blu Ray by now? ;)
+North Southy Oh yes ;) Spearhead and the Cushing films are nestled comfortably on my shelf. Dude you should totally get Vengeance on Varos SE. I mean if it's literally the ONLY one you need to complete your collection, then why not? Unless you have a phobia of acid baths or feel total revulsion at the mere sight of Jason Connery's bare chest, tis only 6 quid on amazon. Cheers.
Yeh, I probably will get it, Colin and Sylvester's stint as DrWho was cut so short :( also Where are the missing episodes? I so want them!! And, I no longer have Bubble Bath's. Thank you.
+North Southy I know such a shame about Colin & Sylv's short tenure on the programme, if we had just gotten the original season 23 and a season 27 that would have made a huge difference. I want the missing eps so bad it's tragic, I can't bear the thought of living my life and not being able to experience those stories or show them to my kids. Whatever happened to the omnirumour huh? Hard to believe Phil Morris did all that work over so many years and so many countries to only turn up 2ish complete stories and loose a couple of others!
You assume correctly sir. I will be buying all season blu-ray sets they put out day one. They've done a stellar job with Season 12, surpasssed my wildest expectations. Can't wait to see what they do for Seasons 10, 18, 19 & 26 which are supposedly up next. Will be picking up the USA DVD of The Wheel in Space recon instantly too if that's what it is.
Z Universe It seems to have sold out everywhere now and I was lucky enough to get it on Amazon the day before it sold out. Will you be keeping your DVDs or replacing them with the blu-ray? Also, The Wheel in Space may be an animation as there has been a report in a newspaper that it along with The Macra Terror are being animated. I suppose it could the Britbox version though considering it is being released in America rather than UK. Either way I'll be buying it though.
How many dvds do you own of Doctor Who that are scratched, obviously not as bad as the survival one though. Also do you know anyway of cleaning scratches in dics? Edit: Also now you have inspired me to get a collection similar to yours. I have so far The Beginning (An Unearthly Child, The Daleks and The Edge of Destruction), The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, The Aztecs Special Edition, The Sensorites, The Reign of Terror, Planet of Giants and the Dalek Invasion of Earth. It all costed about $50. Do you have any suggestions for any others I should collect?
He (and some others) also inspired me. Currently I have The Beginning (An Unearthly Child, The Daleks and The Edge of Destruction) The Dalek Invasion of Earth The Space Museum & The Chase The Time Meddler The Tenth Planet The Ice Warriors The Invasion The War Games Day of the Daleks Bred for War (The Sontaran Experiment, The invasion of Time, The Two Doctors and The Time Warrior) Genesis of the Daleks Pyramids of Mars City of Death Destiny of the Daleks The Five Doctors (25the Anniversary Edition) Attack of the Cybermen Remembrance of the Daleks I've ordered more (Revisitation 1&3, Web of Fear and EarthShock. I highly recommend: Bred for War, Revisitations, Genesis of the Daleks, The War Games. Also, open up, there are 7 (well 8 but one movie doesn't count/audio CD's) doctors to choose from. Tom Baker and Patrick Troughton are great, also Peter Davison (Caves of Androzani - Revisitations is cheaper + 2 other stories).
AlchemistOfNirnroot Hi mate, excellent burgeoning collection you have there, plenty of quality 60's stories too which I like to see. I'm having something of a Pertwee renaissance at the mo, so would count him amongst my top 3 doctors. I'd recommend some of the less-well regarded stories, of which most are awesome such as the The Keys of Marinus, The Ark, The Krotons, The Ambassadors of Death, The Claws of Axos, The Mutants, Planet of the Daleks, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, The Face of Evil, The Invisible Enemy, Meglos, Four to Doomsday, Time-Flight, The Twin Dilemma, The Happiness Patrol & more. Cheers.
***** Hey, Survival is the only one with a scratched disc, I try to keep my collection in as good condition as possible so they are all fairly immaculate aside from some shelf wear. I'm glad I've inspired you to assemble your own collection, I don't have any advice per se except enjoy yourself! I still think it's an incredible luxury to be able to own all the existing Doctor Who's meticulously re-mastered with commentary & documentary features etc on every disc. You seem to be getting them in order which is sensible to me, but just do it whichever way you prefer, if there is a particular doctor you like then maybe collect some of their episodes for a while. All the best!
+Anthonydoctorwho fan Thanks mate, It was a labour of love really, and since I love classic Doctor Who about as much as a human being can love an old British TV show, it wasn't too hard. I bought them as they were released mostly. But I would have tracked them all down come hell or high-water if need be. Picking your favs is a good way of doing it, I just happen to love every single classic story and simply had to own them all. Sounds a bit of a show off! but TARDIS doors would be awesome, I do intend to have a special room dedicated to all my various classic Doctor Who memrobilia some day, so might do something similar then. As for favourite Doctor, it's a difficult one, My Doctor was The Seventh Doctor & Mel/Ace. Thats the first one I saw and the only Doctor Who stories I got to see on original transmission. So my go to answer would always be McCoy. But as of right now, I always like the underdogs and Colin Baker is a magnetic presense and The 6th Doctor has really grown on me over the years. I also love The First Doctor, and he is a close contender. So right now I'd say the 6th Doctor cause he's so misunderstood and is one of the most interesting interpretations of the character. As for companions after recently re-watchng the entire Pertwee era, Liz Shaw has leapt into the top 5, she's fantastic. So it's between Liz Shaw, Ian & Barbara, Leela, Harry Sullivan, Romana 2 & Ace. Probably Leela. But I love them all, even Adric. And I think Kamelion rocks. Cheers.
If anyone's interested, I'm reviewing all the: 'Doctor Who,' episodes on my channel, with me having just finished: 'The Space Pirates (1969)!' No pressure, of course, just if you're ever bored! :)
+Alex Miranda The web was repelled when Jamie ripped wiring out of the pyramid causing the body of the possessed Arnold to blacken and die and dispersing the great intelligence back into space. Sadly this meant London returned basically to normal and there was no more fearful pulsating webs for us to enjoy.
Actually having them vertical is a far better way of storing them, aside from much greater ease of access, storing them flat puts pressure on the cases squashing them and causing more general wear and tear. If you want to keep your Dvds in tip top condition, have them upright on a shelf and not too tightly packed together.
MrSinxist Hi mate, I do still watch the new series from time to time, I can't help but remain curious. But not avidly, I got through just over half the most recent Capaldi series and that's as much as I could stand. Basically my main complaint with the new series has always been the same - the writing. I have nothing against any of the actor's cast as The Doctor for example, Tennenat and Smith hammed it up horribly at times, but that's what they were directed to do, Tennant is capable of great subtlety given the chance. The problem is those who run the show. Namely Moffatt. The standard of writing is truly abominable at times, and just plain unprofessional at others. It's smug, self-indulgent, simplistic, cringe-worthy, nonsensical, repetitive and deeply idiotic. If they just hired a new creative team and some REAL writers for the show, I'd be on board. Overall as it stands the new series is nothing but a childish imitation of the original, made by a hack. It's a shame because I really like Capaldi, he deserves better. Ultimately you can throw all the talent and fancy visuals at the screen you want, if the quality of writing isn't there, it's game over.
Slayer Fortress Started buying them in 02', bough them as they were released until the range ended, so over 10 years. It cost the standard price for each release at the time, probably £12.99 on average, mostly from online retailers play.com & hmv, occasionally in-store at woolwoths or virgin. Already answered the new series question in the comments.
Hi, I love The Seeds of Doom, particularly the first 2 Arctic set episodes, very atmospheric. Would love the whole story to be set there. It also benefits from Geoffrey Burgon's terrific eerie score, and one of Tom's most assured performances as The Doctor. Terror of the Zygons is my favourite of season 13, but Seeds comes close.
YoungGamers Tricky one, since I don't know your tastes and Tom's era has so much variety. My personal favourites as of right now are - The Ark in Space, Terror of the Zygons, The Masque of Mandragora, The Deadly Assassin, The Face of Evil, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, City of Death, Meglos, Warriors' Gate. I would recommend The Deadly Assassin most if you haven't seen it, a game-changer story with tons of Gallifreyan mythology etc, its a gutsy script by Holmes and an amazing episode imo.
I wish they would release one big set on blu-ray with every episode they have on it (obviously the missing ones would not be there). While the quality would not be HD as the transfers would be from tape, the 50 GB storage of a BD would mean they could put more episodes on one disc. This means you could own them all without devoting a whole wall to it and would probably be cheaper to get. You could put the equivalent of 10 of these DVDs on one disc, probably more as some of these are less than the 5 GB DVD capacity. Anyway great collection. I was thinking of getting the whole set. After watching this I realize what a daunting (and pricey) task it would be, especially since I am a Yank and these are more expensive here. The UK versions are PAL right? I know these are region protected too. I tried watching the new Who series but honestly they are rubbish in my opinion, something was missing, maybe I didn't watch the right ones? The old series seems to have more depth, mood, and sense of place to me.
Hi mate, thanks for your reply, I agree about a complete blu-ray set, it's viable and would be cool but I think would be just too expensive to produce given the sheer volume of content involved. More likely they could produce Season sets or blu-ray collections for each incarnation of The Doctor. I'd love to see it done despite having them all already, it would be an opportunity to include extra's that were not included on the DVD's, although what to do about those pesky missing episodes... Yes it is daunting starting from scratch, and would not be cheap, but it's still achieveable if you decide to do it over time, only unfortunate thing for you U.S. fans if that a number of titles have already been deleted on DVD and you would have to search them out and pay probably over the odds for them to complete your collection. As far as the new series is concerned, I'm with you on this one, it's just rubbish, don't waste your time because it only get's worse. The current series is unwatchable. I would just enjoy the old series for all the reasons you stated and more, it's just infinitely superior. Cheers.
Z Universe if they had one for each doctor then 4th would be the most expensive and 6th would be the most cheap and the current series is not unwatchable
Z Universe Which DVDs have been deleted and why would they do that? Are they just not big sellers or was it something else? It would be nice to get those without the holes. I would hate to have to resort to some more dodgy methods like downloading or something but...
BrodieBoltSpeed Yeah the 4th doctor would be an expensive era. Each to they're own, I found the current series impossible to get through aside from Peter Capaldi who is great but otherwise it was a mess. Truly awful with one or two bearable episodes.
DaveC1964 As far as I know the current list is The Rescue/ The Romans, The Web Planet, The Time Meddler, The Gunfighters, The Invasion, The War Games, Terror of the Autons, The Time Meddler, Planet of the Spiders, Black Orchid, Earthshock, Time-Flight, The Awakening, Frontios, Planet of Fire, The Mark of the Rani, The Two Doctors, Battlefield, Ghost Light & The Curse of Fenric as well as the original editions of Inferno & The Green Death which were replaced by special editions. I really don't know why, presumably these were lower sellers but it seems a bit arbitrary. Nothing wrong with downloading if it's easier and cheaper for you, really depends how much you want a complete physical collection. Makes me glad I'm in region 2 land and don't have to make these decisions!
+THE GAME PLAY MASTER Judging by the amount of comments on it, even after I have answered multiple times and changed the video description to explain it's absence, I'd say your right! So I'll do a wee update vid at some point including Web and Underwater Menace and hopefully that will put peoples minds at ease. Thanks.
Where's the mordern series. Well I Prefer the original but a doctor who collection would need the mordern series or the collection would be empty without it!
Sam And Guy Animations I have all the recons downloaded, some still on VHS. I don't have any plans to make custom covers for them at the moment. I'm still hoping Marco Polo will be returned, it's a fantastic story and one of my most wanted lost episodes.
I bought The Web of Fear as soon as it was released, this video was shot before that. In retrospect it's annoying to not have it in there, I should have waited!
+kiwibeca Hi, yes I have The Underwater Menace and am still hoping to put up a review at some point. Great story but was very disappointed with the half-assed recon the beeb stuck on it. Pretty pathetic considering the quality of fan-made amateur reconstructions out there.
