Another tip I would add is if you go to a vet and you see your dog is not getting better, switch vets and go see a specialist. I blame myself every day for not taking my dog somewhere else when I noticed my dog's eyes not getting better and he developed glaucoma. My vet kept saying it was normal until she admitted that I needed to take him to a specialist. And by that time it was too late. Don't trust your vet 100% bc like Ryan said common vets have limited knowledge. Also, make sure you ask for your dogs medical records when taking him somewhere else. It helps a lot for the specialist to get a sense of what past treatments your dog was on so they can try new ones.
@@janicehernandez7907 I agree. Vets tend to forget what they were trained after not seeing certain ailments for a while. It was fortunate Gatsby was seen at a Veterinary school that teaches about the ailments on a routine basis.
@@janicehernandez7907 I'm so sorry for the experience your pup and you had. They should recommend seeing a specialist before they feel they don't know what else to try. 🐾💙✌🌺
Ryen couldn’t have said it any better; we are our pets’ advocates, and there won’t be anyone to speak up and notice these changes in behavior more than us. Love the October picture! It captures both Ryen’s and Gatsby’s personality perfectly! Can't wait to see more throughout the next few vlogs! Ryen’s got some MONSTER QUADS!!! I’m hoping to have great, developed quads like Ryen one day! Ryen got me onto those chicken bites, and they are such a time saver! Easy way to get in protein as well! Only if we all had the snapping cleaning ability, that would be amazing lol. LET’S GOOOO! THE RETURN OF THE CLASSIC TARGET RUN SEGMENT! Watching Ryen eat pizza is making me crave it! Such a bright and early upload; great way to start my day! I’ve been loving how frequent the uploads have been! Feels like we’re just hanging out and spending the day with Ryen and Gatsby!
Ryen you are a great fur dad. You have made me a better fur mom. We trust our vets, Gatsby could not have a better Dad. Each day we have is a gift, continue being the positive person you are and I wish you and Gatsby good health and long life.❤❤❤❤❤
Ryen I think it’s great you talked about Gatsby’s cancer in hindsight, it could be the push for somebody to have their pup checked out! You take such great care of Gatsby and give him so much love, always an inspiration!
Hi Ryen and Gatsby 🙋♀️ Ryen, you did your best as a pet parent. You Are, a great and responsible father to Gatsby! Gatsby knows he has the best dad!❤❤❤
I am happy for you and Gatsby that he is living his best life. We lost our girl Lola to a brain tumor in December 2021. They treated it for the longest time as an inner ear infection until we told the Vet we wanted an MRI and that is how they found the tumor. It is instinctual...we know when something is off with our pets. As you said we need to observe and advocate for them. Were are also fortunate that UC Davis is only a few hours away from the Bay Area. Continued wishes for many more years of adventures together...
Ryen! You’re truly the most wholesome person on the internet. It honestly brings me to tears haha! I just got a new corgi puppy and seeing you with Gatsby just makes my heart so full. Been binge watching all your old vlogs and was so excited when this one came up. Love your positivity and good vibes. Remember how loved you are! sending love from Australia ❤
I remember my mom commented once that you made better bentos for gatsby than she typically got in Japan- I've never seen such awesome looking washoku (Japanese food) for one's furry child. I've also watched for a long time and recall the video after the diagnosis. Your emotions came thru to me and I could not have been the only one watching whose eyes teared up just a bit. Cheering for team Gatsby!
Did you see the video when Ryen made nigiri sushi for Gatsby? He liked the tuna and other fish (salmon, I think) but did not like the cucumber maki. Actually, didin't like the cucumber - the rice and nori were OK. This was maybe 5 years or so ago.
So true! My corgi has been through so much including having a spleenectomy. He has always bounced back but yes if you can go to a specialist and have pet insurance.
I've been watching your videos for years. You've always been so conscientious about Gatsby's health. His diet and everything. That's why I knew as soon as he got that appointment, I knew he would be okay.
I lost my corgi Gus to cancer a few years ago. It was awful we thought he had pneumonia took him to the emergency vet a couple hours away (we live two hours away from an emergency vet) by the time we got to the emergency vet they told us he would t make it back home. My parents didn't get to say goodbye ( he spent weekends with them and loved them so much). It is still shocking and heartbreaking and it came on so fast.
A month ago today our 13.5 old Pembroke gain his wings. Ended up with Splenic cancer, went thru two rounds of chemo and he did well until a week before his next round. We miss him so much and our heart hurts but I know he's no longer suffering.
I am using a translator and it may not be perfect. I have been one of the people who have supported you and Corgi's daily life for a long time, and I also raise a Welsh Corgi like you. It's been a while since I've been to this channel, and it's sad to see that your corgi looks very sick. That's why I support you. Along with your Corgi’s health, you also want to be happy.
Knowledge is power, but the power is in the sharing of the knowledge & not keeping it to yourself! Thank U Ryen & Gatsby for sharing! Blessings, Peace & Joy to U always! 🐾🐾💖😊🤗
💜🙏 Everything you've said is SO TRUE! You're both fortunate you caught this early and were able to afford treatment. Having an ill pet is heartbreaking!! I've had cats with Leukemia and in "hospice care". Watching their strength was the saddest and most incredible experience. Bless you both!! 🙏💜
One point to note, Ryen, is that sometimes occasional visitors to Gatsby might see things you miss. As you see Gatsby every day, there might be subtle differences that you wouldn't notice because it's slowly incremental. But someone else, who sees Gatsby say, once a week, might notice the change more readily since the change will be more apparent from one week to the next. It's good to have friends that will speak up - another "check" to ensure you don't miss a change in Gatsby.
Thank you so much for making this video. This is very educative. I bring back my corgi when Gatsby's 5, can't believe a good five year has passed! I was heartbroken when hearing about the bad news happened on Gastby but very happy to see how brave he is and strong you guys are in conbating cancer. Wish the very best to you and Gatsby❤
I'm so happy for both of you that you're doing so well. The love you have for each other is remarkable. Gatsby has always been such a darling. Like the calendar so far.
You and Gatsby are the best of things on RU-vid. Gatsby (and your love for him) inspired me to get my own Corgi, who 6 now. Thank you for your heartfelt videos.
So happy to see you Ryen and sweet Gatsby ❤❤. You are a phenomenal pup parent and even more a phenomenal person. Your discipline is amazing. I wish you both all the best and continued good health for Gatsby. You are doing an amazing job!
Back in January, my 11-year old dog (a Sheltie) started coughing and couldn't keep down any food. After a sleepless night, I took her to the emergency vet. After a lot of very expensive tests, they ruled out an intestinal blockage. But whatever was causing her intestinal distress had passed. However, the MRI showed a "spot" on her pancreas. The emergency vet suggested that I follow up with my regular vet in 3 months. The next three months went OK, but she started to lose a bit of energy and the coughing returned. Still, her appetite remained good and we were able to go through most of our regular routine. Toward the end of April, I scheduled another MRI with my vet. I knew it was bad when the radiologist suggested calling in the vet. But it took a couple of days to get the bad news - the "spot" on the pancreas had grown significantly through the wall of the pancreas and into the surrounding lymph nodes. The vet felt that it was likely an aggressive form of lymphoma, and it was far too advanced to treat. (My wife and I had already decided against aggressive treatment anyway). The vet said that my dog probably had 3-4 months, but within two weeks, she was already getting week and losing her appetite. It was right about five weeks from the diagnosis that we decided to let her go. I'm not sure what I would have done differently, but both the emergency vet and my regular vet didn't seem all that concerned with the first MRI and recommended waiting three months for a follow-up MRI - by which time it was too late. Ryen makes a good point that if you want to pursue treatment, get a second opinion from a specialist.
I was once told by a vet tech imaging doesn’t catch everything. A dog was once put down bc they couldn’t save the dog from an intestinal block - a pork chop bone - that wasn’t found on scan/test. Always get a second opinion.
Thank you for taking the time to share this great information with us, I appreciate that you did. You take such good care of Sir, and he deserves it., all dogs do!! You guy's did such a good job with the October calendar page, both you and Gatsby's expressions match each other. ❤😊🐾💙
You are a great papa!!!!! I remember my 1st Border Collie (he crossed the rainbow bridge at 15 1/2) was limping...I took him to the vet and said that I noticed he was limping.. it was very slight, but the Vet remarked that she could see it ...but very slight. After testing him for Lyme, which came back positive, the Vet said "Good eye mom'... THAT'S RIGHT. I could have brushed it off...or not even noticed, but I watched him like a hawk... eagle-eyed so that I am able to tell if anything is 'off'. And, my dog (my 1st buddy) and my now 3-year-old Border Collie will get the best care... I don't care about cost.
I love all the corgi kisses! Aren't corgi tongues the best lol Your calendar pic is awesome! Can't wait to see the whole calendar. We love you both and are always praying for Gatsby to stay cancer free! PS try the nerd clusters! They are yummy!
My Corgi Charlie died from cancer 9 years ago. Losing him brought me to you and Gatsby. ❤ He was 6 when he died. I'm glad Gatsby is doing great and you look like your doing good too Ryen.
My corgi does sneak licks preferbly on. Bare toes. Has been a lot of fun in summer when open toes would not suspect him to do a sneak lick mostly when already walking slightly away 😅.
Man I have not seen your videos in YEARS, I legitimately remember when you got gatsby as a puppy I was just a kid when I seen that video, I’m happy to see you guys have been doing well
It was fortunate that Gatsby was close to UC Davis (they have a veterinary school that is recognized worldwide). The faculty there are great! Plus I know that our fur babies need as much attention to their health as their owners.
Great opening, talking about how we owners know our dogs best and stressing that we're their only advocates. That kitchen, it's obvious that you're partner is Gatsby because he doesn't care what the kitchen looks like. Now that my wife and I are retired, I will tell her about the packaged chicken from Costco. Plus I like your protein-packed lunch. The song at the end of this video is wonderful. Please link it for us. Thanks for posting this video.
I don't have a dog but I have cats the same thing applies to them early detection always helps thank you so much for the advice I pray for you and Gatsby all the time have a yummy fabulous blessed day❤
Very good advice! Thank you for sharing your perspective, which can definitely help others! My current corgi is still less than 2 years old and very healthy, but previously, I lost a corgi at just 6 years old because I ignored the signs. Always follow your gut!! I laughed at "Quadzilla," and also I just had dental surgery and the first thing I'm going to eat when I'm healed is pizza lol
Thanks for speaking up about this. My dog had nasal cancer. I waited too long. The vet waited too long. She was too far gone when I sent her for a CT... It was already in her brain 😞💔
Tip: A good vet would get a full profile of your pet. My dog would vomit and diarrhea every 3 months when he was a 1 y.o. He received chest X-ray, iv fluid etc. All tests were negative. Took 3 different veterinarians - many bills & emergency vet visits- to find out it was due to his diet. Other than them asking - Do you bring your dog to dog parks? Do you board your dog? *What does your dog eat? *What does his diet consist of?
Ryan, Thanks to you and Gatsby for sharing the information about cancer. I don't have a puppy, I have a Pony🐈⬛. He is 7 years old now and what you shared today has motivated me to be sure to have pet insurance and get scans as he is getting closer to 10.❤
Whenever we have something that seems serious with our horses or dogs we go to the university of Minnesota. Rather than our local rural vets. I think you did a great job chasing down his diagnosis.
Great points about being responsible for your pet's health. But all that you said is also true for HUMANS! We often put off going to the doctor - oh, I'll do it next week/month. It's probably nothing and will go away soon. I'm feeling this way because I'm under so much stress at work. I just need a vacay! Etc etc. BUT, we gotta take care of ourselves. If we don't, then how can we take care of our pets? It's a synergy - taking good care of oneself means that we can take care of our pets when "something seems off" with them. GOOD POINTS, RYEN. YAY!
