Sadly, I think drama teachers getting sucked into only choosing the pretty popular students is all too common. I'm surprised my drama teacher noticed enough about me to have anything to put into my yearly reports. I had to drop drama by 5th form as I couldn't justify a subject that clearly wasn't going to get me anywhere. I've spent most of my life thinking I must have been terrible at acting and it's only been recently with getting involved in drama projects at church (our vicar used to study at drama school) that I'd ever actually gotten encouragement in drama. People compliment me and I have a hard time believing it.

It remined me of a toxic relationship with a friend of mine when you said " all because I finally worked up the courage to say I deserve better." that happened to me. and you are COMPLETLEY RIGHT! love your vids rebecca!!

0:27 Oh my do I get that so much. For years. 8 years I tried so hard and only got three good roles out of like 15 plays. It absolutely crushed me because I thought it wasn’t good enough. You have to understand that sometimes you want to move up to the next level and challenge yourself more. Thankfully now I realize that it isn’t me, it’s just the person more fit for the role.

This is definitely a common occurrence I think happens in most schools. That teachers that teach a single subject will ended up finding their favorites and it can easily be shown. For me, IT was the class that I noticed the teacher showing favorites just by his behavior. He would be kind to those who behave as well had a strong knowledge in learning IT but will appear scary and strict to those who didn't or just mucked around.

In my freshman year of high school I took Theatre Appreciation (I wanted Theatre 1 but the school is stupid so). It was a semester class, and I had a lot of fun! We even got the option to participate in a small 10 ish minute play that I immediately signed up for. Best part was I got to be one of the main villains. I remember that me and my friend (who’s character had 0 lines) were the two people who worked the hardest on that show and to this day I still have all of my lines (plus a few other characters lines) memorized. But on the day of performing that backfired on me because I accidentally said one of the other characters lines at the very beginning instead of my line. I did manage to smooth it over, but I’ll never forget my failure

I had an art teacher like this. Praised me one day, then straight up bullied me the next. By now, I think he projected something onto me... he seemed to think I was arrogant for some reason. I uh... got him fired for telling me to stop crying after my dad died. Screw these types of teachers.

I've had my fair share of experiences with.... abusive teachers... and let me tell you, I'm honestly proud of you for doing that. I never had a choice, I couldn't drop any classes bc they were all mandatory, and to this day I'm still salty at a few of them and can't bring myself to forgive and forget, despite being in a better place in my life now. so, truly, I admire your strength!

I was very much type casted in my theatre group. My teacher was extremely emotional, but she liked me a fair amount. Being the only kid who could properly use a diaphragm meant i was always the loud/powerful/evil characters. Maybe it was also just funny to see a little 5’0 teenager on stage yelling at everyone.

And there was one time I really needed her help, for a friend of mine at the time, and she put me down then as well when I needed her most and actually had the confidence to talk to her..

I had a theater teacher who was somewhat like this. She was older, near retirement, and absolutely brutal in her grading for the intro to theater class everyone was required to take. The difference was that, with everything but casting, she was extremely fair in her brutality. Her casting decisions were similar though, and one year after absolutely smashing an audition and losing the role to a person who literally just read from the script on stage without emoting at all who WASN’T EVEN IN THE DRAMA CLASS (v small school) I confronted her. “He’s popular and the fall play is how we fund our program for the next six months. For what it’s worth, I’m sorry. You would have been better, but casting him means we can afford two more debate overnights.” I couldn’t be mad after hearing that, because I was a debate kid. But unlike your teacher she had both good reasons and empathy.

Ugh I know this is an old video but it hits hard. I remember watching this years ago and being entertained by it but now I come back and can only relate to it. It’s not my theater direction but my band teacher. She plays favorites and doesn’t do her job half of the time. The biggest problem with it is that our guidance counselor (you know, the one you’d talk to about dropping/switching class or about how a teacher is awful) is her best friend and the two have the whole school wrapped around their fingers. Last year we had drum major tryouts and despite being the least qualified the director’s daughter got the position. This year we didn’t even have tryouts. The director’s daughter’s best friend just walked right into the role. Music is my life but every year it’s only gotten worse and I want to quit. Next year is my senior year and I want to have a senior season of marching and concert band, but at the same time, I want to enjoy my year without the burden of band. I don’t know what to do, but this video at least helps me know I’m not the only one who’s been in this sort of situation. Sorry for the essay 😅

Good God, Becca, she sounds exactly like a theater teacher I had back in high school, 1999-2000. With fluffy, wild hair, and favoritism for pretty and popular students.

Something similar happened to me not too long ago either. My school is doing a production of Cinderella, and for some context, I'm a junior and have been in the past two productions my school has done, those being Annie get your Gun and Strange Days at Summer Camp. Of course the roles are usually given out based on Seniority, but my first role ended up having a lines, meaning my choir director (who directs all the high school productions) had plans for me. During this time she also had a co-director, however she ended up having to step down due to her health and unfortunately passed away a few weeks before casting for Cinderella. Now we have a new co-director, which is important to note. SDASC happens, I get the exact role I wanted for that one, and then we get to Cinderella. I do the audition and make it to callbacks, and everything was going great. All the girls had to sing 'In My Own Little Corner' for auditions, and people complimented me left and right, and I was so confident (probably too confident) and they decided the cast the same night so we didn't have to wait long. Now I knew I wasn't going to be Cinderella, but I really wanted to be the Stepmother anyways. Then we find out the cast and I don't even have a role. Now usually, I wouldn't have cared, I mean you can't make them all, but a certain name was on there I didn't ignore: the co-director's daughter. Now don't get me wrong, the choreographer's daughter was cast as well, but the difference is that she can actually sing and act, the co-director's daughter is not good at singing, she's OK at acting, and it's clear to everyone that nepotism was to play here because the Co-director does this with *everything*, she even tried to make her work on the 7th & 8th yearbook even though she's a sophomore. It was later made clear after the choir director retired and from what the choreographer was saying, the Co-director refused to let anyone else do casting other than herself, and I was furious. The sheer audacity of this woman. And so I quit, I didn't care. Coincidentally, the community players we're holding auditions that weekend and so out of sheer hatred I went to those auditions. I was already thinking about doing community, but never really took it seriously, but this literally pushed me over the edge. I ended up being so much happier with this, I ended up getting a leading role, we had our production over the summer, I even had the confidence to do improv, something I would've never done out of fear of the Co-director getting pissed at me. I actually loved it! Going into the school year I had a choice of either coming back to Cinderella or auditioning for Elf the Musical, and you can imagine what I picked. Cinderella is having its show next week, and I can't wait to see how it turns out, but honestly Elf was the better decision for me.

Reminds me of my 11th grade high school french teacher. Some days she was super sweet and understanding, but for the most part she’d yell at the class for our assignments not being good enough even if you asked for her help and her class policy was to let her read over your assignment before handing it in to make sure it was done right. One time she sent an email to my parents because I hadn’t taken notes (which she didn’t grade us on) the way she liked it and worded it to make it sound like I hadn’t taken notes at all. I had a mental breakdown and showed my parents that I had been taking notes, to which they happily chewed her up and told her off

My old high school theater teacher told me : "I didnt cast you as the queen because you're too fat to be a queen" This was after the entire cast actually came to her begging her to rethink the casting decision because the person she casted never learned their lines and never showed up for practice. I didnt even complain. The cast complained and begged her to recast. And she attacked me for it. This fueled my eating disorder even further. So. That's fun.

I want you to know that this video was very important to me at a time in my life where I needed to hear that this kind of behavior wasn't okay. You have no idea how much this did for me

Now I live in au/Australia so I had no theatre stuff but how I found this channel was by watching Robert IDK but I do recommend him he is a cool guy anyway I really appreciate your work Rebecca and you make amazing vids good job

The situation you went through Kairi reminds me of the contortionist by Melanie Martinez which, in my personal opinion, best song of her entire discography, lyrically and production wise(fair warning if you do decide to listen to it, there are bones snapping sound effects that were used for the production so if you’re sensitive to those kinds of sounds beware)

I was in special Ed for Autism for all of K12 school and in elementary school, I had an SE teacher whom I went to small group with and it was very obvious whom her favorites were. I remember I really liked drawing on my notes but she always yelled at me for it but then there was another girl in the group who also drew on her notes, but this girl, who I’ll call Corinne for privacy reasons, was one of her favorites, so she never got in trouble for it with her, and even got praised for her drawings. I also remember there was one time when we had a reading comprehension assignment with her and this teacher yelled at me for rushing through but then another girl, who I’ll call Bridgette, turned hers in and this teacher just praised her for taking her time and started comparing me to Bridgette, and then gave Bridgette a check plus right in front of my face, just to make me envious. Basically, this woman had a hierarchy of how she treated students: there was the favorites, who would never get in trouble and receive all the praise and always be used as examples no matter what they did; then there was the alright ones, whom she would yell at if they made a mistake but then immediately forget about what they did; and then, there was the trash students, which was where I was, whom she would constantly yell at no matter what and basically just abuse. To make matters worse, There was another girl, whom I’ll call Tegan, that was also a trash student, whom I thought was my friend, but she was a bully. You’d think that we’d support each other since we were both dealing with this teacher’s abuse, but really, Tegan would take things this teacher said to her and use them to insult me or take things she said to me and reuse them to insult me. Yeah. This was a horrible experience.

Being used to smaller schools and smaller numbers of students here in New Zealand than people in other more populous countries might be used to, it didn't seem off that there would only be *one* person in charge of all aspects of theatre. Perhaps really big schools overseas might have a theatre department with more than one person in it, but all the school I and my kids have attended only had the one person in charge of all theatrical and musical productions for the school so if you and that teacher don't get on, that's "it" so far as theatre goes for your entire time in that school. Great idea trying for community theatre instead.
