It's a space box with engines, seats 25, and is entirely governed by Newtonian physics. Sounds like classic human tendency to build things in bulk by the lowest bidder. A theme that repeatedly comes up in the B5 universe. Humanity might not have the greatest weapons or the most advanced technology, hell we only just got access to jump technology thanks to the Centauri. However what we excel at is spamming an environment with maneuverable but bare-bones craft and unpredictable tactics. As for that 4cm hull, makes it challenging for even grunts to mess it up.

The class BSG shuttle was a honking huge personnel carrier. The episodes where we saw the interior of the shuttle, it had several (4? 6?) rows of sideward-facing seats. edit: It also carried a Landram or Snowram ground vehicle.

Well the Kestral works in atmosphere and because of that it needs a lot more fuel to and it's lift capacity is much more limited. The Crew shuttle is not atmosphere related and carry much more cargo and people.

The hull thickness likely do to deal with micro meteorites and other space debry. Oh, and occasional accidents with ships or stations. Possibly radiation resistance/blocking too. Would allow long time running before needing to maintain and repair the hull. Or at least survive hits.

Dockmaster, to keep up with the minivan theme, might I recommend the Leopard-class dropship from Battletech? It only carries a lance of 'mechs, 34 tons of cargo, but is remarkably well armed for its size, dead-nuts reliable, easy to maintain, and cheap to operate.
@jlokison

Well 4 mechbays and two aerospace fighter bays. So 634 tons of cargo, because if you don't have 100 ton mechs or 100 ton aerospace fighters you can carry more cargo.

The Babylon5 universe /can/ support defensive shield technology. The B5 movie 'Third Space' had one, at least on an inter-dimensional gateway station. Also, I really don't want to dwell on the fact that zero-G bathrooms require a glorified wet-dry shop-vac to work.
@dalesnell6286
@dalesnell6286 2 часа назад
The Vorlons had shield tech. The encounter suit that Ulkesh (or whatever its name was) had shields that PPG shots bounced off of. You could see the distortion around the encounter suit. I imagine that the Shadows also had shield tech -- though maybe not, given that Londo’s guards were able to blow a couple of Shadows to pulp at one point. “Going to have to have that painted over, I suppose.” On the other tentacle, the Earth Alliance and the League of Non-Aligned Worlds didn’t have shields. I’m not sure about the Narn and the Centauri, but I don’t think the did. If the Minbari had shield tech, they got it from the Vorlons.
@TheGenericavatar

@@dalesnell6286 I had forgotten about replacement Kosh's personal shield. As for the Shadows killed in the throne room, their invisibility tech may have been incompatible with any shield tech they had.

Well considering how many times you said harder in this video. I’d like to propose a video about the absurdity of USS Harder. A submarine that would not be questioned if it claimed a kill by ramming. A SUBMARINE, claiming a ship-to-ship kill by tactical collision, would not be deemed out of character for this one. Some may question various captains or pilots in fiction pulling improbable feats and being able to “because their just that good” and call it plot armor, favoritism, or even Mary Sue, but reality is often stranger than fiction and some people in history seem to take insult to the idea they can’t be crazy and USS Harder was a submarine packed full of them.

I got a Chevy Bolt in 2019 and have loved it so far. It's basically the demon spawn of a minivan and a hot-hatch. I tried to like Space 1999, but everything about it was too weird. From the nukes on the moon somehow propelling it rather than shattering it, to the gee forces of that acceleration not pasting the people around it, to the bad effects. Even old Trek was better. Glad we have more realistic sci-fi nowadays. I wish I didn't have to worry about that. Need one of those implantable transporters the Trek crews seem to have. The puddlejumper is also awesome, too powerful though. OP glowing squid weapons, cloaking, and occasionally time travel? What can't they cram into that minivan? Could be 2 inches of spaced out meta-materials to block radiation and stuff, not just 2in of solid titanium or steel or whatever.

It would make sense if the shuttle was actually armored hull disguised as civilian craft that can be converted to missile carrier or aa gunboat but i dont think that 4 cm is any match gor the b5 technologies present on any meaningful side. I guess that whatever was the fighter before Starfury or the older capital ships could have problem with it. I like when scifi has purposely included obsolete flawed ships but this is front line duty transport, it would be replaced on way frequent basis than military equipment.

No inertial dampers on these things since Hummies didn't have that tech when these things were made. Same reason there's no artificial gravity on any human ships. The Warlock class would be the first human designed ship with gravitic technology and even there is was babies first steps grav tech. I didn't have inertial dampers because we haven't figure that out yet, on board gravity was somewhere around lunar gravity and could only pull full near 1G in specialized rooms (basically the it would take too much power and added a lot more mass to keep the whole ship at 1G) and the engines had poor thrust to weight compared to earthforces's rockets so they still used them for times when they need to step on the gas and as a a backup if the drive broke down since it was new tech and new tech likes to do that at very improper times. This is one of the things I love about this show, it's not like when your first develop a new technology it's gonna be perfected yet and you're gonna have a steep learning curve. Oh, as for the armor. Remember, it was built to be military shuttle. Human space tactics were based on the fact that we couldn't make lasers as good as other races and our ships were slower but we know how to make armor and short ranged but F you and your family powerful plasma cannons sooo our mind set was build everything with enough armor to survive long enough to get close enough to punch them in the fact and kick in their teeth. Hell even our out dated first gen warships completely massacre even the most well defended ship in the minbari fleet as close range after our failed first encounter.

surprised you didn't mention the star trek TOS shuttle.... I don't recall shields on that altho that might be episode specific, and it's warp capability was extremely limited.. if it had it at all. and having played various games where you drive a cap ship around I would absolutely consider having any sort of childcraft that dock with a mothership that are dedicated to combat as a weapon system of the ship. while just sub 2 inches of armor is nothing compared to most space battleships in fiction.... that's freaking tons of armor compared all the real life space minivans that humanity has ever used. and it's also way more armor than the forementioned TOS shuttle had too. and about the only possible weapon that the TOS shuttle had is if you could jigger the impulse drive to spit out bad radiation or something like that towards something that was chasing you.

if you want minivans in space... think StarTrek universe one of the things indeed I think is really funny is that (at least in my interpretation) the way most people travel between planets in that setting is actually shuttles... which sort of makes me think of the federation as being a sort of interstellar Vietnam... quite fitting, given it's interesting relationship with economics and the monetary system.
@laurencefraser
@laurencefraser 2 часа назад
To my understanding, the difference between a shuttle and a runabout is that the runabout is capable of interstellar flight within meaningfully short periods of time while the shuttle is not. Thing is, just getting from one side of the solar system to the other (because the planets you're traveling between are at opposed points of their orbits at the time) is a big enough distance that you either need to be able to manage some absurd acceleration without pulping the humies (to be fair, StarTrek does have the tech for this) still taking days to months, or some form of FTL that doesn't involve such high levels of experienced acceleration but still gets you there in a sensible length of time.
@Krahazik
@Krahazik Час назад
@@laurencefraser Especially in cases where trip is not important or critical enough to warrant getting a whole starship to do it, but the distance is still greater than transporter range.
