Welcome back, friends! In this full-length tutorial I'll be showing you my current method for building a nylon bullwhip, as well as introducing the new materials that I am using to make them. As always, The methods used in this video are what I've found to work best for me, and should not be thought of as the "only way" to make a whip. You may have different methods that work better for you, and that's ok! This tutorial is filmed in a real-time setting, so grab some paracord, a seat at the workbench, and plait along with me!
Below are some links where you can purchase some of the tools and materials that I used in this video. A few of the links are to Amazon, and if used, I receive a small percentage of the sale.
I'm glad you are here, and I hope you enjoy!

I have concerns that every time I watch one of Nicks videos, it is his "latest method"? Simply because he usually tells us that he has replaced one or two of the previous component parts due to a breakdown of some sort. So what Nick is telling us is simple. Don't buy one of his whips until he gets it right!

Interesting viewpoint. I don't ever recall stating that my current method videos are created to address whips "breaking down". Instead they are created to inform fellow whipmakers and clients of my ongoing discoveries within the craft which I believe yield a slightly better build each time. If someone purchases one of my whips 3 years down the road (assuming that I still make them), they will indeed receive an overall better product. This is due to myself gaining more experience in the whipmaking craft over time, but is this not the same case for everyone in every art/skill/trade? The way I see it, there is a big difference between refining something over time, and "not getting it right". The minute that I proclaim a particular whip build as THE ONE, then I'm not learning anymore. True perfection is never obtainable, but it is certainly pursuable. Even though I am currently happy with my products, I still have so much yet to learn about whipmaking, and I openly admit that. Some people will like my whip building methods, and others will not - and that's OK. Regardless, I still respect your opinion and I thank you for watching.

Humbug. So you made some minor modifications to your whips based on experience. You've inspired me to build a whip and Ive been referring to all 3 current methods as well as your falls and crackers video. Just finished my second belly! Cant wait to crack the final product. Thank you. Keep up the good work.

I guess, man. honestly, the only real important changes he's made are 1) He stopped using electrical tape 2) He started using sinew to bind whips 3) He started waxing all of his whips Everything else is pretty minor, and those 3 changes GREATLY improved the quality of the whips, everything else is just small incremental updates that don't do that much, but are still cool to see. It's like anything other skill based hobby, there are big things you need to learn, and then after that there are lots of other small things you can change and update over time if you want, you know? And considering he's updating those things all the time, it's really only making the whips better and better. (And as a side note, nylon bullwhips are a relatively new invention, they're still figuring out TONS of stuff all the time, but leather bullwhips have pretty much been made the same for 60 years now. Looking at the procedure for a full leather whip verses a nylon one is CRAZY)

When you switch from 14 plait (under 4 over 4) to 12 plait, ( under 3 over 3 ) doesn’t that create a double overlap?

I make my living building acoustic instruments for the last 30 years. I for one, can appreciate Nick's information. I used his first whip making video many years ago and made over a hundred, based on his methods to get my "feet wet". My finished product (I did it for a hobby) was not up to my standards, and took up too much time which I don't have, to enjoy and have fun, with other priorities, so I just stopped making them and did not keep up with this subject. Over 8 years later, now I wanted to make some whips for my grandkids and saw this video. After getting the newer materials he suggested, and whizzed through the BB core, which was like torture and a whole world of waterboarding and frustration prior. With the basics under my belt, and the manner of Nick's explanation of the process has made a world of difference. Instrument making is just like this and everyone does things their own way through repetition and thousands of the same actions you will intuitively gain through subtle, small modifications to get better. Which is rarely shared in the real world when competing with others to put food on the table. When you get to a higher, more professional level, like Nick, you can share all your "secrets" because he knows how to excel and will always be innovative ,intuitive and technically superior.

Years ago I stumbled upon whip cracking videos which led to how to make a whip which led to your videos. I think the asmr-y voice in your content helps with being able to watch very long videos. I know I don’t have the willpower to watch a high energy 1-3 hour video. It would get too tedious for me personally. I do also consume asmr content but so far I havnt fallen asleep to your tutorials - They’re just super calming. Thank you for all the amazing work.

I read one of the previous comments with this guy. Dogging you I'll tell you what I own my own construction company. I'm just doing this for fun on the weekends, but if I stopped learning if I thought I knew everything, I would have been left in the dust ages ago. Things change on the daily basis. People find new and awesome ways of doing things that we never thought of 25 years ago when I started construction. Thank God for the internet and thank God for people giving away their quote" secrets to the rest of us. I'm too old anymore to work as hard as I did when I was 17 and started construction and if I would have been bullheaded and snub-nosed I would have had to stop doing construction years ago because I'd be too goddamn tired and to beat up to continue. Keep up your good work man

Thank you for posting this! My dad has wanted me to make a whip for him for years now since I made first one years ago, but I did not want to make him like mine which was rather lackluster. I made one to your guide for his birthday and he was thrilled! I'm blown away with the amount of content that is freely shared by you and other makers, and can't thank you enough! That being said my newest pup chewed my old whip up and I need a new one (I use them to scare Moose out of my yard, very important with 7 dogs!) And have always fancied a snake whip, so off to your next guide!

I must say thank you for making all the instructional videos! I had intended to purchase a whip off a website but after seeing enough videos of other people making whips I became skeptical of what its construction methods were like. The methods here were super easy to follow (minus the transition knot, but that is a unique beast of its own). I made my own adjustments and incorporated elements in which I think will make my whip better for my own purposes (full contact whip battles) but I really appreciate the thorough explanations of how to build a general whip. If anyone is curious one adjustment was using 1/4" stainless steel tubing for the handle, putting a section of 1/8" aircraft cable coming out for the handle/core transition and then going into the BB loaded core (with my core being much longer). Further whips may experiment with all aircraft cable for the core... Has anyone else played with this by chance?

I just wanna say thank you for making your videos. I’m currently attempting to make a 15 or around 15 ft whip using this technique for the colour design. I have a depression issue and sometimes I don’t want to get up in the morning, but one day I watched a video where you were in your garage making a whip and I attempted my own. I don’t wax them cause I don’t have the equipment, but I’m currently working on my 3rd one. The 4 ft didn’t turn out great, but works. The 10ft one turned out pretty good. The handle size is way better, the colour is better and it sounds and looks great. I just want to say thank you for the chill vibes and helping me keep my mind calm. Keep calm and whip on.

First whip I waxed I turned it to 200 degrees I hadn't listened to the Fahrenheit bit, hum never cracked properly as a lot of the paracord had fused solid. Lesson learned. Thanks for all the tutorials Nick I have really enjoyed making a number of whips. God bless

I've always wanted a whip. When I was a kid I tried making them, unsuccessfully. Thanks to your tutorials it took me just 1 month to go from crappy non cracking whip to whips that I could easily sell if I wanted to. Fully functional sturdy whips that easily crack and won't disintegrate. I actually switched to 5mm spring steel rods before watching this vid. Hyped to see you did the same. I experimented with some different materials for the core. I tried steel cable instead of bb's. Actually works well, but you really have to be careful not to cause kinks in the cable. Does wonders for the stiffness. I also tried shrink wrap instead of sinker cord + electric tape. But I think that it will disintegrate either by age or fatigue. So I'm trying different types of cord. Right now I'm using paracord 1250. Because the bb's fit easily and it slides on the end of the spring steel rod easily. I have yet to find a local dealer for artificial sinew though. Not much of that stuff around in Europe. I have to import it from the US or UK. Unless someone can point me to a store located in The Netherlands or somewhere close.

Hi Nick, The best scissors I've come across to date are Fiskars dressmaking scissors. They are extremely sharp - like a surgical scalpel blade and go through nylon like a hot knife through butter. Watch your fingers though. I cut about 3mm deep into mine just accidentally brushing up against the blade. They will also cut cow hide - not that you're using that any more.

I'm currently working on my very first two whips, based on several of Nick's videos. I bought the materials a while ago, based on an earlier video, so there is some electrical tape in there; however, I hadn't yet done the binding on the second belly of the second whip, so I decided to make as best I could of the situation, and pick up some hockey tape for the remainder. Me at sporting goods store: "This is in the hockey section, and it's tape, and it looks fabricky, but it's called 'hockey stick tape'; is this the right stuff?" *lifts mask, sniffs tape* "....It is."

I hadn't done a transition knot until the whip I made along with this video, and when he mentioned that it was a 5x4 turk's head, I experiemented with a different method: I tied the turk's head on the end of a dowel I had just as I would for a heel knot, but more loosely, then I slipped it on the whip and tightened it down. This made it a lot easier for me because I could keep track of the square on the top while tying the turk's head

I enjoy your tutorials tremendously young man. I'm impressed with your instructionals. Not only do you tell and show each step, you also tell us WHY you are doing thus and so. I bought a cheap 20 dollar 6 ft. leather whip. Went looking for vids on how to crack a whip. I found them yes, also I stumbled upon How To Make A 6 FT. S ingle Belly Bullwhip With Adam... MEANWHILE The fall and cracker came off the very first cracking session with $20 whip. Sooo I took it apart and tried to reverse engineer. Naw make one myself with the help of your video. It took months to complete, first time I've EVER attempted something like that. When I was youngER I didn't have the patience. I started over several times because I would miss something or do it wrong. Anyway, I have since completed it and one more, which took maybe 3-5 days couple hours each. Yesterday, you and I made a 3 foot snake whip In around 5 hours. I do believe I have found my perfect hobby. I'm impressed with your instructionals. Not only do you tell and show each step, you also tell us WHY. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH.

It is helpful when you show the natural bend at the transition for belly or final whip, top and bottom to judge binding success. It is hard to feel binding tightness as you do it, but easy to see effect.

Nick, something I do when I'm tying a harness with really long ropes is take the working ends and do a crochet chain in each one. That both makes the ends shorter and keeps them from tangling so much. Maybe that's something you can use when you're working with extra long strands
@chrischris1688
@chrischris1688 2 года назад
Thats a great idea. I just started my first 12 ft whip and will be needing 42 ft strands and this will definitely make it far more manageable

I've been a fan and made several whips with your tutorials. My first whip broke due to electric tape and whips anyone that thinks they know how to crack a whip. That's hilarious. Now when you get into new steps I wish you would let people know more than an inch before a new technique. I haven't made a whip in a few years and just cut the first belly off of my core. I know you have a whip repair guide but an unplaiting guide would be great. I had to unplait a few inches and messed up bad. I couldn't fix what I had done.

The camera set up you're using illustrates the methods you use much better than other tutorials I've seen. Excellent work. Thanks for all you do to educate and keep us all informed on new materials. Many improved outcomes since a few years ago when I became interested in this, for me anyway, hobby. I would love to see a video illustrating the many different patterns you've come across because there are so many out there.
