I thought so too before I got one, but no they're awesome. They're called Fretwraps, used, as seen here, to control unwanted overtones past the nut (particularly useful for hi-gain tones) and also, when placed over the middle of the guitar neck, great for controlling string noise when recording guitar solos in an unsanitized environment
