About the little churches: From old times to this day if you have a sailor or traveler in the family, and there is storms and you afraid that you won't see him again, and you go over a cliff or on a hill from where you can look far far away to the sea and see if his ship is coming, you pray and promise to God or saints that if they bring him back you are going to build a church. (If there is already a church on the spot, you may promise to buy an icon or something). When he comes back you have to keep your promise. We call this kind of promise tama (τάμα) Sorry about my English, I hope you understand the meaning.

My tour guide in Athens explained this as well when I was touring the Mycenaean King tomb in 2016. This is very similar to Asian culture, including India too. People build random shrines along the roads to thank God for fulling their prayers. The more I learned about Greek mythology, the more I think it's similar to Asian believes, there's a god for everything.

In Christianity (at least in Greece) there is a protector Saint for everything!😂😊😂😊😂 Also, many archeant holy places became Christian as time goes by. For example the Parthenon in Athens which was a temple to Virgin Athena became a temple to Virgin Mary.

Thank you so much for giving this walkabout. I was in Crete in 1984 for a few months and met a Scandinavian woman who asked me to come along to this island. She had been several times before and it was even quieter in those days. I remember there being only 2 cafes at the pier and we slept under the 'umbrella' type trees on the beach. There were no tents and most people were nude on the beach. In fact, I got rather painful sunburn on my bum on the first day. I had been well-tanned because of being on Crete for 3 months, but of course I had been wearing shorts. Then, on this delightful island my white Scottish arse got frazzled. I guess it could have been worse had I fallen asleep on my back! I stayed for 2 weeks and headed back home with some great times. It was interesting you mentioned sharks and I suspect you are right in that they left a long time ago. Some fishermen still used dynamite in those days. It was frowned upon and the local military doctor said he would not help anyone injured if they were hurt using dynamite when fishing. Thankfully I never knew if he was bluffing. Anyway, your video brought back some great memories and my time on the island feels like yesterday. Best wishes, Gavin.

You are at the southest part of the island of Crete close to Elafonissi and/or the Spakians' Land, and the little island to the far in the sea must be Gavdos and Gavdopoula. Have a nice time Gabriello!

Well it has indeed been a truly epic summer of travel for you. I have followed every minute of it with eager anticipation. I doubt that anyone, in all history, has followed that unique- bit fantastic- path of travel across Europe and Centeal Asia! I must say I felt a sense of deja vu now that you're back on a Greek island- it reminds me of last winter's epic romp across Greek islands. Omg Gabriel in Greece again, by far my favourite of your videos. I've been to 14 islands myself and my video have helped me a lot with planning my itineraries in the past few years. The islands you can't miss are the ionians on the west, I know you've been to Corfu but there's 6 other green beautiful islands with the bluest water imaginable. Enjoy

@@andreimihaesi Thank you. It's bigger than most people realise because when they look at the map they focus on the mainland. If you take measurements from one border to the other, from western part to eastern, north to south etc you will realise it has almost the same size us France. The two thirds of it is in the sea. (Islands and a big amount of water around them with a lot of oil for offshore drilling...)

Greece is an Orthodox country. The remote churches are there because at some point there was or maybe there still is a monastery around or a hermit monk that lives there. When I say lives thet doesn't mean he has a house, he may live in a cave or just out of site near by. Service usually is dayly not only on Sundays and commonly takes place at night. I hope that solves the mistery

So people hike up to the top of that mountain every day in the dark to go to church? That's dedicated. The thing is, several people have written detailed explanations under this video now, all of which were completely different. So I can't say the mystery is necessarily solved, but I'm cool with that. :) I think the hermit monk theory makes a lot of sense though.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos If you visit Meteora in Greece, before the roads were built, they used to climb the mountain with ropes, live in caves you can see on the side of the mountain. They built those monasteries carrying stuff on their back. Amazing, you can read about it online and the same about Mount Athos

Awesome. I visited Meteora on my first trip to Greece when I was 18 (long before youtube). I explored a lot of the mainland during that trip, which is one reason I haven't explored it as much in recent years, but Meteora would definitely be worth returning to and capturing in video.

@@larsstenseth2351 Free camping is very common in G........ beaches and in some other little islands in the Aegean (like Anafi). The permanent inhabitants are not hippies but common people, like everyone else.

Beautiful. Glad you were finally able to upload the video. Few questions: on the beach, are those rocks, or just really weathered hard sand pieces? How in hell do you get up without coffee!?! Renewal time for sure. Great place to ponder, and simply enjoy.
