My Daily Routine as a Recovering Addict (One Year Sober)

wanted to show you guys a lil video into my daily mindset and routine as a recovering addict now that i'm over one year sober! A few years back I made a video on what my day looked like in early recovery; I think in today's video I may have referred to it as "what a day in my life looks like at one month sober", but I now realized that I was probably much further into recovery in that video than just one month. Either way! before this point, the longest I'd ever made it was 11 months sober. Now i'm over 420 days sober, and my mindset is in an entirely different place than ever before since I began struggling with addiction.
I still have a ways to go, but I'm on the right track. I'm so excited for what's to come in the future and where my life will take me. You CAN recover. We DO recover.
In this video I definitely did make a note to bring up the ways addiction still has a lasting impact on who i am today, but I don't intentionally try to think about this every single day. I try to remain as positive as possible and focused on the moment :)

I'm so sorry: ( maybe it's like a Livestream and has to do with the amount of times you say the trigger words? I know that would be literally impossible unless you created alternate words at the beginning of the video for the trigger words. I wish they would make this easier cause I know how much your videos have helped others. 💜

With certain things I've heard that they look at the first X seconds of a video. This may well have changed or not apply here, but you could try doing an into of hello, explanation and vibey music with animal clips for like, 90 seconds or something, before you say any of the words?

Dear, Taylor and others who are in recovery: I’m currently 3-4 years years sober from *stuff*. Like Taylor mentioned how long it feels like its taking to get on track, I’m still trying to get fully on track. I have made mountains of progress but just know that if you’re still struggling with self care and basic stuff, you’re not alone. Maybe its because i was a child of neglect and maybe its because of my strains of mental illness. But you’re not alone and this video also helped me remember I’m also not alone

Not finished with the video yet, but Taylor I would just like to say: I started watching your animal videos when I was a pretty young teenage girl. I loved you! I was there as all of your struggles (at least what we could see) were going on online. It is so refreshing to see a video from you again! I can see so much anxiety and fear in you and it’s tough to work through that when the reality youve escaped is terrifying. But you are doing so so incredibly well. This whole last year, time would’ve passed no matter whether you got clean or not. No matter whether you took a shower, or brushed your teeth, or whatever else, time would’ve passed. With this past year you’ve used your time to improve yourself and your life for yourself! Time is still passing, and with each choice you make to do something for yourself and your quality of life, you’re doing more as much as you can be! You’re taking a moment in time that could be filled with anything, or nothing, and filling it with something positive! And when you can’t do that, at least you’re not putting in something negative. There is no correct time line, only moments :))

Amazing that you keep going, despite the lack of energy even after being sober for a year.. That would be SO HARD. You’re a warrior!! I would always tell myself, it’s not ALWAYS bad, and yes, imagine being sober for 8 years. Then, you would have double the time sober and imagine how normal and chill you will feel then. Like you said, even six months you will probably feel better 😊

I never comment, but your videos on this topic really hit home. Went through the same situation and I've been off for 6 years. Just keep going. Have hobbies and productive, meaningful ways to spend your time. It's really easy to still live that type or life and get caught up in that repetitive cycle, even when off stuff. That's what got me. I constantly thought about and longed for my life before I got on stuff and felt like I just woke up one day a decade later, but everyone went on without me and forgot about me. I'm also a huge advocate for the two substitutes used to treat this type of issue. They save lives and have helped millions. Anyways, You're doing great, keep going and never look back.

Now at age 20, I am revisiting this channel and just watched your 1 hour+ long video on your addiction and it absolutely breaks my heart to hear what you went through. SO incredibly proud of you Taylor. I am a recovering heroin addict as well and am also in medicated assisted treatment. I without a doubt wouldnt be alive and breathing today if it weren't for medicated assisted treatment. It is the reason I am able to be the mother my son needs and deserves and be able to be a good wife and daughter, granddaughter, aunt, and friend. It has saved so many lives and I will forever be grateful for it. I just hit my 11th year of sobriety so I know exactly what you've been through and how hard it is. It takes so much strength to overcome addiction and here you are a year sober. Addiction completely rewires our brains and i think that a big reason why theres so much stigma when it comes to addiction. People dont realize from the outside looking in that because it rewires our brains we cant think like we would and like other people if we didnt have the disease of addiction. It takes a long time for our brains to go back to normal so you still feeling the way you do after a year is completely normal but im sure you already know that. It took me about 9 months to where I felt back to myself so you'll get there love. Your doing absolutely amazing. All of us are cheering you on. 💕💕💕

I really really appreciate your honesty. Alot of people wouldn't admit that they don't wanna film or talk to the camera. But you're trying so hard to honor your feelings while talking through the reality of things. I think that feeling of "i have made no progress, this is going so slow!" is something everyone can relate to on some level, and its something we can all easily get caught up in. I love that you're able to acknowledge those feelings while reminding yourself that it's not true, that you've made huge progress and it just takes time. All your hard work, all the therapy is REALLY paying off!! I've never seen anyone take this much accountability for themselves, looking at the good and the bad objectively while still letting yourself feel things. I'm so proud of you!!! Thank you for sharing these types of things with us, even though youtube is demonetizing all your hard work because this platform is BROKEN and doesn't care about their users.

i wasn't going through addiction but I did go through a horrible experience with depression and I completely relate to what you said about feeling like you just vanished and then woke up again years later. That's how I feel as well, other people were still living their lives and I draw a blank when trying to remember those couple of years and now its crazy because I'm thinking about all the ways things used to be before my depression but other people have moved on long ago. But, I am creating new memories now and I know that I have a future so even though I am also still trying to shower and brush my teeth and fix the health issues that I caused, I know that next year and even 6 months from now will be better.

After back to back bigbad relationships, I had to move in with family also. Seeing you doing so well, and being so open & vulnerable gives me all of the hope in the world. Exercise helped me A LOT when it came to fixing my lack of energy. I have chronic illness/pain stuff too so I can relate to the fatigue and whatnot. I basically learned that if I exercise for roughly an hour 4+ days a week I feel SO MUCH BETTER. Physically and mentally. I used to have constant anxiety and panic attacks at least once a week. Now I don’t have any of that. It’s honestly mind blowing. Also, when I stopped working out for a while my symptoms came back and when I started again they disappeared again. So that confirmed it for me. I have to exercise to feel good. So now it’s a habit and I’m actually addicted to it at this point. It’s a healthy addiction though. 😅

How do you get past the breathing? I like excersize, but what I really need to do is cardio. Wieghtlifting is simply not good enough. But I find that when I try cardio I start feeling like I can't breathe before I even get physically tired. I do have a large chest, which might contribute. But I have friends with asthma who manage better than I do, and I can't seem to figure out how to keep pushing without passing out.

@@elinevanophem8340 that's actually very helpful, thank you! I do have a medium sized, youthful dog so I go on lots of long walks and hikes. But I still find myself out of breath in these cases as well. We end up walking slower for a moment or two or sometimes even stopping when I really don't want to. My lungs always come up perfecrly fine when I get checked out so I simply do not understand why it feels so difficult to get complete breaths. My guess is that it's possibly my workout bras. They are much mire secure and tight than my everyday bras, but somebody told me once that you cannot compress your lungs with pressure from bras or boobs. And it doesn't appear to be an issue for my friends. I have tried working out without a bra to see if it helps but I don't usually make it very far due to the flapping and smacking 😅😂

Recovery is not linear, and it is not the same for everybody. Some days, keeping your head above the water is the only thing you have the energy to do. And that's okay! You don't have to be super productive or active to have a successful day. Celebrate the little things, one step at a time. Wearing yourself out to keep active won't help anything. Just keep yourself healthy and content for the day. Moment to moment. That's all it takes, and it all adds up eventually. Speaking from experience with depression. You are rocking it, girl! I’m going to start showing her your videos. I think she’ll love you. Anyway, you’re right that addiction doesn’t have to be a lifelong battle & I’m SO glad you’re realizing this at such a young age. You’ve got so much more life to live & you’re going to blossom! Been following you since 2017 I think & I’m so glad to see how amazing you’re doing lately. You’ve got this ❤

Hi Taylor, I have been following you since I was 13 now I'm 19, the both us have grown in our own worlds. I am so so proud that you have come so far. It is possible, and it is amazing that you are so understanding with yourself on how long recovering can take. Grief is not linear, you are doing great. I've been a silent follower but I needed to leave this message for you, you're loved and valued and your body will remind of that everyday that you're here. Thank you Taylor.

I also couldn’t get rid of my things when I had to leave a bad situation and had all my stuff packed in a storage unit... I missed all my things sooo much and would visit my storage unit very often just to be around it all. Lol. When I finally got my own place again it was so nice to have everything back, I remember crying cause everything smelled like home to me. I am also a recovering addict, everyday is a challenge but what helps me is definitely looking back and seeing all the progress I’ve made through reading all my journal entries. You’re such a cool person and thank you for sharing your life ❤

I understand what you mean when talking about it being hard to get rid of stuff... I'm a very emotional/nostalgic person, and when I moved in with my boyfriend, I had to get rid of a lot of stuff. It's hard to say goodbye to things that you bought/have memories with. Putting the stuff in storage instead of having it in the house with you is a good step. Hopefully one day soon, you can go to storage and get some stuff out and decide what to do with it. It doesn't have to be done in a day. Maybe take one out at a time. Proud of you

I have ADHD and chronic illness, and it seriously effects my executive functioning. I've accumulated a bunch of tips and tricks to stay motivated and stay on track throughout the years. So here's that list, lol: 1. I start off the day with a self wellness check. This could be just sitting for a few minutes to notice your energy/pain/motivation levels. I use this info to determine the later list steps. 2a. I try to keep a few things in mind as I go through my day. First, the spoon analogy. Or really, my take on it. Neurotypical people can have 7 spoons to use throughout the day. 1 spoon can go towards exercising for the day, another could be cooking dinner. However, neurodivergent people, I'll be including people with substance abuse disorder and recovering addicts in here, start with less usually. #1 is really where I determine how many "spoons" I have for the day. If I'm really struggling with my chronic illness for that day, I usually only give myself like one or two spoons. As long as I get something done, then it's a good day. Even if I don't, that's okay because I may have had all 7 spoons taken up by my chronic illness and ADHD. 2b. These are other tidbits I keep in mind throughout the day: two things can exist at once. You can be in recovery and have a step back or a bad day, but you are still working towards bettering yourself, for example. The other one is give yourself grace; It's easy to judge the past from the future. 3. General tips to help with executive function: My overall tip is that I found by providing small dopamine hits throughout the day, you can really increase your motivation. For example, I used to really struggle with showers in the morning. Especially when I graduated college and started working. One of the ways that I combat this is by buying really nice shower products that get me excited to shower. For example, I buy all sorts of good smelling things from lush that help me get motivated in the mornings or relax me at night. This could be a hair mask, a body scrub, or even just a good smelling body wash. For work, I always try to do the easiest task first to get me motivated. For example, sending out an email or creating a small graphic design. At home, I get motivated to clean or do things around the house by doing a small task like taking out the trash. Now, let's refer back to the spoons. If you're having a bad day and you have taken out the trash, But realize that you can't do anything else, that's okay because you took out the trash. Small, achievable goals really help trick your brain into wanting to do more. 3b. Another thing that I want to mention is making lists or prioritizing. Since I have adhd, these can be very daunting. But what I found to work for me is this: Make a list of everything that you have to do and everything that you want to do for a day. Go through the list and mark the absolutely have to get done today items. Once you're done with that, go through and mark the rest of the items according to their priorities. I usually number, but you can also do a high medium and low system. Then as you go throughout your day, you can refer back to the list or just keep it in your mind as you go throughout the day. This ensures that you're able to track everything that you need to do, and allows you to feel more motivated when you check something off the list. 4. Life style changes make a big difference. I usually roll my eyes when people say oh just eat healthy and exercise, and all of your problems will go away. When you struggle with executive functioning, it isn't that easy. So what I like to say, is to set goals for yourself that are short and long-term. I've struggled to continue exercising since I graduated college. I went through a huge depressive episode for about a year. This was hard for me because I was a cross country runner for 8 years. Ways I've been starting to get back into it are through doing yoga and resistance band exercises. Sometimes, taking a small step may not seem like a lot of progress and it may not be where you want to be right now in your journey. But, if you don't take that small step, you're stuck in the loop of "why can't I do anything." 5. I guess my overall executive functioning advice is to start small, and find little things that will keep you motivated throughout your day. It's going to be hard, and there may be setbacks or steps back, but as long as you are constantly working towards improving yourself in some way, then you are making progress ❤️
