Ignorance is no excuse. Lack of respect for people with allergies is never okay

It’s not true ignorance. Sophia heard directly from the doctors about the allergies and thought she knew better. It’s arrogance.

My dad didn't believe in allergies either. Being 1 of 13 kids. He refused to cater to my allergy to dairy. So age 6 after multiple hospital stays for me. I was sent to a boarding school for ill children. It was EPIC. I could eat foods I'd never tried as dairy free. My first SAFE birthday cake was FANTASTIC. Chocolate sponge & icing. Yummy. An NO DAIRY in it. Yet ALL us kids devoured it completely lol. Was made for 60 kids. There was only 46 of us. So we still felt the need to finish it all. My first try of non dairy butter & cheese ect was new to me too. My palate grew so much at boarding school. Yet I dreaded school holidays returning to my dads cooking. So I often refused to go home for the holidays. As it was safer for my health. Luckily the school agreed. So only 12 kids running wild in a boarding school meant to cater over 150 pupils of all ages. Often only house from 12 during staying there school holidays. From 46 to 58 as the amount of pupils grew over the years. Yet the staff were the best. All us then kids were treated as one big family. We could easily talk to ANY staff member. Our specific health needs were catered too all the time. From food & skin allergies to asthmatics. Aswell as many more health conditions. It was such a SAFE loving inviroment. We called the house staff Aunts & Uncles. As there were separate boys & girls houses. Only lessons & mealtimes were mixed. I'm still non dairy. Yet now there is SO much more choices out there to choose from lol. Non of my now 3 adult kids have any allergies. Yet my middle grandson does.

This warms my Lil Black heart for you!!! Though it sucks you had to be sent to a boarding school for the wrong reasons. So glad the staff actually cared for you and your peers and showed there are other food options!!!!! And that they were so wonderful to you and all the kids. It's nice to read a good outcome and that you are happy and safe cos a few people showed you what is possible in a different way. Also you first Safe Birthday Cake sounds delicious!!!!! I didn't and haven't had food allergies but My Dad never believed me about my severe depression. Until I was 28 years old. I am now 40. Ita not the same at all but I understand how hard it is to not have a parent believe you when something is wrong.

@@brittneyihrig1216 Thankyou for your kind reply. My dad & siblings called me the runt. As I was the only one born with health issues. I was at boarding school till age 13. Yet went sent back to my dads. I hated every second. As I was the Cinderella of the family too. Made to do ALL the household chores. Cleaning the bathroom with bleach & a toothbrush. Aswell as cleaning ALL the skirting boards with another toothbrush. In my dads 3 story 8 bedroom house. So I'd run away most weekends. As I loved school. So would stay school days. So after months of this. Social services (child protection in UK) Who let me choose to go in a childrens home till I was 16. I was the only girl. Yet being a tomboy. I fitted in easily lol. By 16. I returned to my dads. Who told me he didn't like me or love me & to get out of his house & don't come back. So I left. Thats the kind of heartless family I had. They hated me. As my parents divorced when I was 10. An my siblings never forgave me for not being there through their nasty divorce. So I made my own family. Married at 18. Had my first born age 20 by c-section. I can't give birth normally. As broke my back age 11.falling of my pony. My fault not his. As I was riding bareback. Over jumps. So I was in traction for months. Yet no family called or visted. In all the time I was recovering. All 3 of my kids were born by c-sections. So all this made me very determined & stubborn in life. I went through periods of deep depression too. Which took me years to cope with. So I know from experience that depression is a serious illness too. I truly hope you got the help & support you needed. It's seems we both had issues with our dad's. Mine passed when I was 9 months pregnant with my 2nd child. But that's another long story lol. I wish you all the best.

@@torridavenport1031 OH sweetie. My Hearts breaks and then soars for you. Thank you for feeling strong enough to confind in me and well the internet. I am sorry for the things you endured with your family. Wish I could give them all a verbal riot act about this. I am so happy for you though enduring as you have and finding YOUR FAMILY AND HAPPINESS!!!! I am so glad you did find goodness in life even when it's not always the best. I just know you are an amazing and wonderful parent and person. I feel it in my gut and my gut never lies. I am very thankful for your kindness in return. And Rest assured Sweet Dear I Have done things to get myself help and better myself also. Ita never easy and it's a day by day thing and I am good with that and I know how to claim the things that trigger me and can try to counteract them. You are an amazing inspiration of a person. You are wonderful, beautiful, and so kind. I want you to always know and remember that on the toughest of your days, BECAUSE YOU made me a total random Stanger and miles apart feel better. I wish I could hug you in person and go shopping in Camden Town with you. (I got to spend a week in England many years ago and everyone suggested Camden town so I went and I loved it) Also thank you so much for understanding what I deal with since you also deal with it. Also Family is what you make it. Family does not need to be blood ties. I learned that oh around 25 years ago. Most my "family" isn't related to me but they are family far more then my actual family. And I rather have the Family I have made above my own family for various reasons. I wish the Best as you deserve every bit of it. And I know I don't really know you, but I love you, and you are family now to me simply because you are such an amazing person and you kind sweet nature and gentle heart. Please enjoy England on my behalf. I wish and hope to see the White Cliffs of Dover 1 more time if I am able. Just keep being the amazing person you are my Dear.

My brother had all sorts of allergies and I carried an epi pen when we were in grammar school, plus the one that was in the nurses office. I had to use more than one over the years. My parents didn't have medical insurance and my parents had to pay out of pocket for everything. Considering what they cost now, I can only imagine how my dad struggled to pay for everything. Nut allergies are especially ferocious in young children. It is a big deal and could have a bad outcome if not handled promptly.

Not to disparage anyones allergies, try having a chocolate allergy. I'm met with disbelief and disparagment. Not fun. It actually is a common allergy but quite often denied. It starts mild but will soon rise to gastric distress and migraines. This is nothing to say about most places only have chocolate.

What kills me is even after this happened the MIL made that comment that she'll get rid of the allergy in no time. Meaning she was planning to do it again regardless of the fact the niece would be sent to the hospital every time.

I spent more than a quarter century working in an ER, and it never ceased to amaze me when some idiot decided to test whether a peanut allergy could be real. Before the epipen was available it was even more common. Then there are dairy and latex allergies, which were all but unheard of when I started in the late 1970s. By the time I retired in 2002 we kept a dozen latex allergy kits ready, and considered lactose intolerance whenever a child was chronically incontinent and acting out. That was a hard one to deal with. Just try telling a child she can't ever have ice cream again.

This sounds a bit too perfect to be true for me, but as a hobby author I don't care if it is just a well written story. I think Sophia had no intention of hurting Luna and only wanted to help. Yes, she stepped out of her line and even though her doings were bad, her intensions were not. That is why I would not have pressed charges here, also I would not have wanted to ruin the whole family. But I would have made clear that she will never ever get even close to Luna again in order to protect her.

I think they went too far by sending her to jail. She was ignorant, not evil. She was trying to help her grand baby, but the wrong way. I think that a restraining order and counseling for mother in law, as well as family counseling would have been better. Also, prayer.

That wasn't ignorance. It was WILLFUL ignorance. This is a conscious choice. In the situation of allergies it can be a deadly choice. She was warned over and over that nuts were a danger to her grand daughter yet she willfully chose to disregard those warnings. Even up to the point of getting arrested she refused to acknowledge that what she had done was wrong. Ignorance can be cured stupid is forever.
@laurenrose2895

Counseling will not help a sociopath. And just because she’s an elderly grandmother doesn’t mean she can’t be a sociopath. Sociopaths are people who know right from wrong, they simply don’t care because they want to do things their own way no matter what. Not all are murderers but in this case had Luna died, the district attorney would have an arguable case for PREMEDITATED murder, i.e., first degree murder. That’s because Sofia was told many, many times that Luna was seriously allergic to nuts and that they could kill her. Yet she deliberately made a cake with nuts intending Luna to eat it. It wasn’t an accident and saying that she didn’t believe in allergies doesn’t change a thing. And there’s never been a case I know of where prayer has helped a sociopath. Doctors will tell you, you can’t grow a conscience.
