When I was in high school I was across the street one morning at the Santa Monica Courthouse and I passed by Max in the hallway. All I remember is that he had really pointy shoes and smelled good.
Very cool stories we’ve never heard before. I remember someone said you never want to ask Donna Douglas about Elvis. She has admitted to and denied at various times to have had a relationship with him during their time filming together and does not like to discuss him.
Loved The Beverly Hillbillies ❤!!! The Story Of "Granny" Taking The Role Is Very Interesting. We Grew Up In The Best Of Times With The Best Shows On TV ❤!!!
I had the privledge of driving Donna Douglas and her agent(?) at the Sheraton hotel on Harbor Island San Diego in the early 90's She was very sweet and kind i remember
I've been catching up on your videos this week. I really enjoyed this one. I love all of the old photos. I can see why meeting the Hillbillies was so special for you. It would have been for me too!
Wow, Scott. You were very easy on the eyes back in your heyday! Not that you're not now....ummm....now you are what we call "distinguished". I am old enough to know that catchphrase! Love your videos.
As aways.... Awesome content. What star struck me about this video is you were there at the tapping in the audience. Wow, I remember that show/ episode. And have watched it since. Actually its the only Jerry Springer show i liked. I live in Pasadena.... and have gone to many of the good show tappings from back in the day BTW, I miss your museum on Santa Monica Blvd.
Paul Henning liked to put references to real places in Missouri & people, that he knew growing up around Independence, MO, in his TV shows, in fact there really were people with the last names of Clampett, Drysdale & Bodine that lived in & around that area. Some places in Missouri that were name dropped in various episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies included communities & villages like Kansas City, Lee's Summit, Buckner, Sibley, Ripley & Joplin, as well as names of Missouri counties like Clay, Stone & Taney. I've been to that museum, over 10 years ago, with some of my family & we had our picture taken with us in the car. Also, I've ordered myself a copy of that Beverly Hillbillies book off of eBay.
I remember the guy who played mr.Drysdale fell on hard times and was upset that Buddy never asked him to be on Barbary Jones to help. It was an Enquirer story so I guess taking it with a grain of salt.
Max Baer is a national treasure. He also played Jethro’s twin sister, the delicate Jethrine Bodine, in eleven episodes. She was voiced by Linda Kaye Henning. The b&w episodes were the best.
I love watching the new views climb. Another amazing video. It "blows my mind" that you were actually able to meet all these greats of 60's television :)
Just when I think Scott has done it all to amaze, he whips out another one lol. How would you like to hang out with him for a week or two touring the LA area?
This was my absolute favourite show as a kid as was my whole family I actually have all the dvds we would sit around with our TV dinners which was the thing back then so many great memories thank you so much Scott 😊
I absolutely ADORE The Beverly Hillbillies!! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video! I really do appreciate you and the awesome things you share!! Thank you soo much!! Big ol hugs and love from MamaJane in South Carolina
Petty Coat Junction was bassed out of Eldon Missouri. I work in Eldon. But there is nothing in Eldon anywhere that says so. But if you search the internet about it you'll find it, but not in Eldon.
This video is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. I enjoyed it more during reruns as I did not understand the humor as an eight year old.
Always enjoy your videos Scott. Imo your are the best in this genre as I can tell you are a genuine fan. Thank you for the hours of wonderful videos and podcasts. Speaking of podcasts…more please!

Scott, Thanks for sharing this great story. I am a big Berverly Hillbillies fan and would have loved to meet them! It's sad that Max is the only one of the cast still alive. Too bad what they did to the truck. They should have kept it in its original form from the show. What was the purpose of adding the spare tire, taking off the windshield frame, and loading all the baskets, barrels, and other junk on it? That's not how it ever looked on the show.
Scott I would love for you to make a vlog about Ennis Cosby and Rebecca Schaeffers Deaths and Locations you may know about the Crimes and anyone you may be able to interview with Details!!
Have you noticed the Max looking a little bit like Elvis in the BH series; originally the show had Elvis in mind to play the part of Jethro, never worked out so it was offered to Max.
A fun bit of trivia is who lived just down the holler from the cement pond of the hillbilly home location: that would've been the estate of Ronnie and Nancy Reagan!
My mom was very dear friends with George Barris and his lovely wife and kids (taught the kids piano lessons) who I believe Kustomized some cars for Max. Every event that George would have, at his shop or at the Petersen Museum, Max was there! I will never forget his extremely dyed black hair and mustache at that point and he always made sure to have a pretty lady on each arm. Quite the ladies man,I believe. 😂❤ thanks so much for sharing this, Scott.
As a child I watched Jethro eat cereal out of a mixing bowl that resembled one my mother had. From then on I did the same whilst seated on the floor in front of the TV on Saturday mornings. Thank you for prompting the question to Mr Baer about Ms Tate...
I used to watch Jerry Springer every night anchoring the local news on WLWT-TV in Cincinnati. He was also the mayor of Cincinnati sometime before that. I also had the pleasure of meeting Ellie May (Donna Douglas) in Nashville once at the annual National religious Broadcasters Convention. She was a very kind Christian lady.
Horse thing! You're hilarious! And a meat grinder - almost. Just goes to show that coffee was so important in those Ozarklands. Loved this trip to the inside of the Beverly Hillbillies. I took that show for granted, more fool me.
How cool for you! I loved all those shows and cartoons from the 60's! I lived for saturday morning cartoons! I also had to watch tv shows that my Dad liked...Combat, Ben Casey, Gunsmoke. Those were the days, tucked in safely at home watching great, fun tv.
Great content, as always...& stellar "then & now" footage! Absolutely loved this, Scott. Your enthusiasm over your experience with the Hillbillies (& Springer!) was so infectious. Appreciate the Huckleberry Hound reference; my sweet dad called my brother that for some reason lost to history & my bro would call Information & ask for the number of Huckleberry Hound while maintaining a dry tone for the length of the call. ✌️♥️📺
Jerry Springer was a Chicago Icon. I went to his tapings a few times in his hey day of crazy. It may have looked out of control on TV, but it was a very controlled setting. Jerry would chat with everyone between takes and was very kind and gracious to everyone. He always, at the end, took time to shake everyone's hand as they left the studio. I went to a few tapings of Oprah as well. For her warmth on screen, there was none of it in the studio. She talked to Noone but staff or guests, and you were hustled out directly after taping, no hand shaking or kind words. 😂😂😂
This all sounds right to me. I never got the hang of Oprah (though I thought she was spectacular in THE COLOR PURPLE)...& Springer (rest in peace) always struck me as endearing & likeable.
I was going to mention that. It wasn't just some wild pipe dream either, he had detailed plans for the hotel/casino and there was even a website describing what features it was going to have. I remember he wanted it to feature a huge oil geyser type of structure that would periodically shoot flames hundreds of feet into the air. He'd planned for it to be in Reno and he got as far as either buying the land or attempting to buy the land, but it was a massive endeavor and unfortunately never came to fruition.
Really interesting. I noticed in the notes from the Springer show that they drove Max Baer all the way up from L.A. to San Francisco instead flying him up. I wonder if he requested that because that's a long drive but a short flight.
Thanks again Scott for taking us along. Loved the Beverly Hillibillies. Was trying to read what was on the side of the truck, but could not make it out. Wishing you the best of everything.
I grew up watching the Beverly hillbillies. Max Baer was always my favorite. Since I was a kid I knew that he had the same birthday as I did. I always thought it would be cool to meet him and tell him about our birthday though I know that's not very interesting probably.😊
I had a grandmother that was just like Granny in everyway - except she got her booze from the store, not the still.. just as feisty and excitable tho.. lol she also had that "down home" mentality. lol
Great video Scott and amazing photos and memories! I used to watch the Hillbillies as a kid in 80s England. I recently watched Macon County Line from 1974 which was produced and written by Max Baer jr. and really loved it. Highly recommended.
I don't know why, but I was thinking about Max Baer the other day & now a video with him...strange! I love the fact that you got this opportunity, I can definitely understand how this is one of your favorite life moments!! Thank you for shaning with us, Scott!!! 👍👍
I've got a picture of another one of the cars that were used on the show just like this one from Star Cars Museum in Gatlinburg. It has a mechanical Granny in the rocking chair holding a fake shock gun 😂
Thanks for this video I was a big beverly hillbilly fan in fact in some of the first ones Ellie Mae was taken shopping for a bra and she said it was a double barrel slingshot that was about the time when I needed my first bra and my mom brought it in and told me she had bought me a double barreled slingshot.I thought you might like that story.Sherry
