My dematting tool -- an absolutely essential grooming tool for my Goldendoodle

Showing a friend how I use my dematting tool to keep Burton's coat brushed out and mat free. This was right after a 4 day trip to the Keys swimming in the ocean with a collar and life vest on so his coat got pretty bad in a hurry.
*Note: this tool is great to clean up isolated mats and works if you stay on top of your dog's coat and don't let it get too bad -- if you let it get bad though then there's really no option but to shave them. Better to brush them too often than not often enough, and make sure you understand how to "line brush" in order to brush them properly!

Now this is a wonderful video. You are careful and slow. The dog is comfortable and relaxed and not standing for hours in a noose. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Just got the defatting tool today, I looked at it and knew I had to see a demo first. My Bichon is constantly full of mats. Until now I just cur them out. Juliet and I will be much happier now.

Just always remember when using the matt splitters, those blades are very sharp and serrated. It is only a temporary fix those areas will become matted even faster because you’re damaging the coat. Always use a good brushing spray before brushing..Hydra/nature’s specialty/I groom are some great brands. Igroom also makes a great leave in keratin conditioner for after and between grooms.

Hi! So Bryantroll I began to shave down my dogs hair really short around her neck where the collar is. BEST DECISION ever! You do not even see the hair since I have her fluffy like your sweet baby. use the clippers and just shave it low. Like at a 1. no more matts.
@jasoncharpentier9081

I've found that rolled leather collars help keep matts around the neck to a minimum.

This demonstration is very helpful - thank you!! I adopted an adult Shi tzu mix with silky (kind of oily) fur. I'm shopping for tools to head off mats before they get awful, and I wasn't sure what I was looking at. This was very informative.

you're welcome! The best thing is to avoid mats as much as possible by brushing before their coat gets bad. If you can, brush a little each day or every couple days and you and the pup will both be comfortable with it. But sometimes mats happen, and this is a good solution!

That tool looks excellent. With matts any painless progress is good. Don't be concerned if it's a little bit slow. Thankyou for the great video.

Good owner! I think others would sadly shave or cut their dogs fur but good for you!!! I have Aussies with double coats so obviously shaving/cutting is a no no except for impossible mats, I’m getting this tool because this would cut through the mats without destroying my Aussies hair

I have a shihtzu with 4 layers of fur! He gets shaved because he bites. HARD. Idk how his groomer does it, but she's a miracle worker! Props to her. My dog is in love with her. If I tried to brush him, I'd get bit for sure. Lol

oh another option though -- I give him a frozen soup bone which he will lay there and chew on for an hour straight no matter what is going on around him. Thats always an option :). You can get them from the food store, just make sure its big enough to not be a choking hazard for your dog.

It takes some practice and getting them used to it. Treats help. Sometimes he will get up and moves away from me so I usually only get about 5 minutes at a time. I also try not to pull too much so it’s not comfortable.

Great video. We have a goldendoodle with a real similar coat type, and the mat struggle is real. How do you deal with mats around the face?
@tristatetuners
@tristatetuners 5 лет назад
I would work through them the same way, just carefully. The best way to go is to brush regularly enough to not get any really bad mats... ideally you wouldn't have to go through this process often at all, but at least you know how to do it if it does happen. The more you brush the easier it is and the better your pup will be with it too.

when you are using the tool for the large matts are you pinching the skin too. Your dog does not seem to be phased. thanks
@bryantroll3499

I try not to grab too much at a time, but if I do I just let the sawing action do the work and try not to pull too hard. Just slow and steady and once you get through the first chunk then it should get easier since its already broken down some. I do use my other hand to hold his fur/skin sometimes just so its not being pulled all around but the biggest thing is just not applying too much pressure regardless.

How do you do it? If you post a video or find an example I’d love to see. His coat usually isn’t bad so I just work through isolated areas gently and I’m ok with going slow since were usually laying on the couch. I’m definitely not the expert though! Just showing what works for me because a friend asked to see it.

@danielletracyann
@danielletracyann 2 года назад
@@amberf7438 I don’t saw it. I put my thumb where the metal thumb piece is and I put my comb at a bit of an angle so it’s not straight with the skin and then I comb it like a comb just not so it scrapes along the skin angle it slightly upwards and comb through it until the mat comes out. It’s a lot easier.

I don’t know... I’m sure getting your dog groomed properly would be a lot less traumatic than letting it get matted and be in pain.... or even not allowing it to get matted in the first place.
@tristatetuners
@tristatetuners 4 года назад
Lol, spoken like someone who doesn't have a long haired doodle who goes swimming. Small mats happen when you have an active dog with a long coat, they appear out of nowhere, and as long as you address them then they don't get bad. I actually keep up with his coat quite well, thank you. Having this tool and knowledge available is very valuable to jump on mats while they can still be addressed. Does my pup look like he's in pain here?

@refusetofollow8841

Mats happen. Every day brushing isn’t necessary either. Dog groomer and poodle owner here. At least he’s not letting his dog become a giant matted mess that has to be shaved.
@refusetofollow8841
@refusetofollow8841 4 года назад
bryantroll idk if things have changed since this video but the only thing I would suggest is to get a brushing spray to use as well. It helps give some spring to the hair so brushing is less damaging. 😊
@tristatetuners
@tristatetuners 4 года назад
@@refusetofollow8841 yup, this was about as bad as he's ever been which I didn't clarify -- just a combo of long coat, lots of swimming, and collar/life vest on a lot. Mats happen! Of course the quicker you can get on top of it the better it is for both human and dog, but this is a solution that it seems people can benefit from. What brushing spray do you use?

How do you slice your dog open if you are careful and going away from your pups skin?
@SuzieRox
@SuzieRox 3 года назад
I don’t think she understands the tool. There’s no way to slice the dog if you aren’t actively trying to cut the dog. The only sharp area is the underside of the comb (where the wavy part is) the tips and the top are blunt. I have several of these. You do want to replace them as they get dull.
@danielletracyann
@danielletracyann 2 года назад
You have to be pretty daft to cut your dog with that tool. You can feel and see where the blades are……
