Ohhh sooooo many yrs ago, b4 I even discovered my own interest in orchids!! Lol None the less, just what I needed, today is the day all my orchids have to come back. Into my grow room from being outside, I do believe I will b grouping my dendrobium in sets , easier to keep thier care in my head if grouped by care. @@GrowingOrchidswithRoger light yes, not sure bout heat unless I move heater up, was considering that, my paths and frag could use a little relief from the heat, I'm also trying to reduce the temp all together, but when the sun comes in the southern windows, it really heats up the whole room!!, (like in the low to mid 80's, F) I have sheer, but Shiney curtains, so maybe this year I'll close them and see if it helps, I'm sure my bulbs and cats all appreciate the heat, but perhaps the others, not so much. It can't hurt to change it up to c if it makes a difference 😎

I could look at your Dendrobiums all day Roger...so neat and so healthy..You would hate my Dendrobiums...all tattered and wild growing every which way...plus i havw sunburned a lot of my collection since putting most of it outside...so even more of an eye sore..lol...maybe i will hold off on a video for a few months
You will love this one when it blooms. It's one of those orchids that just catches the light from underneath and is VERY difficult to get right on film. A little secret - I was 'going on' about checking your moss as it can deteriorate and take out the roots. My good looking trigonopus was in that situation. I took it off it's mount and yes, most of the roots were lost. Grrrrrr. Luckily, there were still a few good ones and the new growth that's just started will push out more. So close - another month or two and I could have lost that one. I am of to the Malvern Orchid Show this weekend and the primary hunt is for some latourias - a gap in my collection that you identified for me with your lovely examples. Let all enjoy our growing and the great hobby we take part in.
I have watched a few videos today on dendrobiums . I have been growing cattleya said for 10 years now and have started a collection of dendrobiums, it was nice to see a video of someone else in UK with knowledge of growing them in our climate in fact yours is the only one I found so I will be watching over and over. Great video Roger, lots of interesting things said here and very important as we should observe our plants and they will tell us when to stop water/ feed them. I failed on blooming mine for the last 2 years but I learned and I will give it another try. Thank you posting!

Sorry Roger. I watched the video late last night and I dozed off.😴 BUT HOLD ON!!! It wasn't due to you but me, full stomach. I just finished watching the entire video and it was very informative. I must need to give some of my dendrobiums a rest. They seem to produce more keikis than blooms and that could be why only a few blooms. (Anosmum, nobile and others with no ID.) I grow all my orchids outside in a pergola. In winter I wrap the pegola in plastic and cover with a tarp to protect from a few frosty nights. So when I water, everybody gets a shower. This year I will move them to a dryer location. Thanks for sharing.
Was it the food or the wine (teehee)? The Winter rest will be a 1st for me but some of my dendrobium species have not bloomed and that seems to be the most obvious reason. Spring will tell......
very good informations here Roger! in my environment is much easier to leave them outside untill is cold enough and then bring them inside. But for the ones that have similar conditions to yours, it's of a great use this video☺ some are complaining about not being able to rebloom them
Well that vid explains what I did last year and what I believe to be the results which could be a lot better. So this coming winter, I will attempt to do things differently and hope for MUCH better results - especially as I will be 'banished' to the spare room while my dens are in my bedroom!
I always have two reasons for filming - one is that I've found this to be the best way to 'document' my plants to show their growth and blooms. It gives me a chance to look back over time to see progress (or not). The second is to show my plants to others and say how I look after them. Others may have different ways and there are loads of different environments out there so there is never 'one way' to do things - always choices. Thanks for watching.

Beautiful Dendrobiums, Roger..! My eight anosmum (HonoHono in Hawaiian) are at the same stage as yours, and are pushing out lots of new growth and their roots are running wild; all due to the few tips I received from three women in Hawaii after I posted a video on my YTC and photos at Google +... I was instructed to water each plant for approx 8-minutes; three times per day, and feed every 5 to 7 days... and it seems to be doing the trick. I was also advised to begin the rest period of my eight plants the third week of November and was also told that those plants I see with one or two blooms did not receive the proper rest, prior. I maintain my eight plants out doors and water with a hose... and I just hope I get the rest period thing right so they can produce once again as seen in my vids and G+. :) It was also suggested that my eight plants stay put in their 4-inch pots for at least one more flowering season after they heard my plans to repot into larger baskets. Best of luck with yours...
I haven't got the same 'heat' and corresponding evaporation and transpiration as you would have but I'm applying the same principle. I water every couple of days - well before they dry out, and feed every time. I have a theory that the stronger a plant goes into any sort of winter rest, the better it will come out the other end and still have plenty left to bloom. I plan to reduce water and feed gradually from mid October, then mid November stop all feed, the after new year rest completely and drop the night temperatures with an increase in light level. But I'm only going to do a full rest for 3-4 weeks in January.
+Roger Frampton I just hope I get the rest period gig down right and that my night temps will not be too warm... though, I'll be happy if they flower half as they did last... I just posted a short vid of the new growth if you get a chance, Roger... Thanks.. :)
Very informative, Roger! I was shopping while I watched and listened to this video. :) I will need to look at my own Den and see about maybe giving them a winter rest this year.
The care I gave them last winter was to find out those that are just not going to do well unless they get the rest. Around half of mine are fine. The other half I will rest this time and then see the results next spring.
I've seen this but have never tried it. It comes down to 'space' and I'm not sure I want lots of the same orchid? I might try it if I take any canes off of any of my favourites though.
One a serious note, can you please walk us through your process of the winter rest, when its time? I would love to follow your lead. Thanks for sharing and happy growing.
I'll certainly video what I'm doing around that time. That will also document it for 'me' so that I can look back at what I did, see what results I get and then adjust in future years.

Stalled you say? Since I m new to orchids I've never heard the term but it explains a dendrobium I have that's just that.You growers sure encourage us greenhorns.

I don't really believe to all the stories about plants that want a small pot... but it's just my opinion! It's just seems strange... in nature they don't have pots' restriction! ahah I recently got that primary hybrid of D. sulawense x victoria-reginae... and I did not make my mind on the cultivation already... I had a victoria-reginae once... but a hot summer just killed it :( Watching this video I feel the urge to go home and check all my plants...!!
I do use small pots for some orchids but it more about the size of the roots I'm accommodating than any sort of restriction. Thanks for watching and from what I've seen of your plants, they don't need much checking - they always look good to me.

Dendros are my favorite too ! When you say you will tidy up old canes, do you just cut them at the base, possibly with a sprinkle of cinnamon ? Thank you for your great videos, sensible and uncomplicated information !
I certainly do. I start with RO water (pure) and feed with Akerne's Rain Mix at every watering at this time of year (growing season). I vary the strength depending on the type of orchid and reduce right down or stop feeding when plants are not actively growing or recovering from some sort of 'problem'. I keep my orchids in 'sets' regarding feed levels. Those not being fed (I start with those) then add some feed at a low level for those like paphs, miltoniopsis and masdevallias, then increase to a general feed level for most other types. The vandas and phals get fed at higher levels and I use separate water (in a bucket) for them as the vandas get 'dunked' in the bucket almost every day. And it all works soooooo much better with at least one cup of coffee! Thanks for watching.
Hi Roger, I love your videos, they are very informative. I am a hobbyist just one and half year of Orchid growing, Lot of Plats have been also sacrificed by me. I see that you water your orchids by putting them in a tub of water mixed with some fertilizers. Is it practically possible for many plants to be dipped in solution for long? do you discard the solution after dipping a set of plants or another set of plants are dipped in the same solution?
Now-a-days, the only plants that get a soak in the bucket are the Bare-rooted ones like Vandas. Many people mix up a solution in a container and soak their mounts or stand their pots in the solution. I change the water in mine about every 10-12 days. It is said that we shouldn't share water but many do and I certainly wouldn't waste the amount of RO water I would use trying to water every plant and discarding the waste.
Have you ever grown dendrobium tetragonum or speciosum? I've got a hybrid between these two and my temps don't get down and I'm under the impression that speciosum needs a cooling to set buds but can't find any info regarding that when I last checked. My temps did not drop last winter (I grow in my bedroom) and it's doing funny things to my cattleyas like....I've got a mossiae that has bloomed three times this year and is currently in bloom, my maximas are budding and blooming now when they usually do so in spring (although they are supposedly fall bloomers) etc.. I admit it's rather nice to have cattleyas finish a growth and then bloom on that growth, instead of waiting for a set season, but it's also...I've got a show here in early spring and the maxima did very well one year and I'd like it to bloom for the show.
Since I am new to orchids as s hobby, I have mainly phals (easy to acquire ), 1 dendrobium sanderal v Luzonica. Just found out that is a Cool care orchid.

Adding into that - it's 'orchid stuff' which comes under CITES regulations. The 'silly' part of that reg is that many orchids are complex hybrids that do not exist in the wild and cannot therefor have been 'collected'. But as the 'sender' can in theory be involved with prosecutions over illegal imports to the US, I would decline.

No, I start watering a bit at a time to bring the plants out of the rest, then increase to a full watering, then introduce some feed at low levels at first until the new growth and roots get going.
Thanks - I don't do that many updates for the Bonsai as they don't 'change' so much as my orchids and this is my 2nd hobby (orchids 1st). Nothing much going on now until Spring when there will be some repotting and pruning/shaping.
Plenty of water and feed frequently - most of my Dens. that are seasonal are mounted so in the growing season, I water them every day and feed at low levels most of the time.
Thank you for this one Roger ! I’ve just bought a Den Stardust Chiyomi largish keiki from eBay and was getting very confused by conflicting info off the internet on how to care for it. Growers say treat like a nobile, whereas orchidboard.com comments are that winter rest = no blooms, no winter rest = blooms. I see at the end you have two Stardust, do you still have them and treat them like nobilies or no winter rest still?
There is only a small amount of nobile in the startdust cross. All of my orchids get lower min. temps in the Winter and reduced watering but only some of the Dendrobiums get a true Winter rest. I only have one Den. Stardust 'Fire Bird' left now and will not get a full rest. I don't even give my nobiles a full rest and they all bloom well.
Any thoughts on Dendrobium minutiflorum I just bought one (nearly tossed it out with the packaging) it is tiny. They originate from China. I mounted it because it's pot was the size of a thimble
Roger.. If you don't mind and I understand if you do, I am living in Florida. Temperatures are usually sunny and hot all year round. Lowest temps get to about 50 or maybe 40 degrees Fahrenheit. In your opinion, a rest for my anonsum... How would you do it? My colder months are usually January-March. Thank you

Den. anosmum 'can' be grown in warmer areas. I would keep it in bright shade during the growing season and make sure it's well watered and fed. As the temps drop, I would move it to brighter light and reduce the feed and watering frequency. During the coldest months, better light and no feed with just enough water to stop the canes shrivelling.
Hello Roger. I am new to Orchids...(I have a single Dendrobium) so I have a few questions. Should I re-pot? I bought an orchid mix which has bark,charcoal and perlite...should I soak in water overnight before I repot? What does it mean to 'rest' it? How will I know when to cut the flowers off? Thank you.
Most orchids are best repotted when new roots are growing (unless the media is bad in which case, just get on with it). I usually repot with dry mix and then give it a good soak, but some soak before. A rest just means no feed and a lot less water (usually accompanied by brighter light) - some Dendrobiums need this to bloom.
Are you in the EU? (not that the UK may be much longer?) otherwise postage restrictions would make that impossible. If you're just starting out, this may not be the best path - trying to get keikis to grow from canes is possible, yes - but has it's problems. Bottom heat is often required. Molds and rot can set in quite easily as the media has to be kept damp. The resulting plants would take quite a while to reach a blooming size - may be at least 3 years, maybe more. Nobile hybrids in good condition already blooming don't cost that much. And I have already cut quite a few canes and discarded them - sorry. Any ways, next time I take some canes off, I'll get in touch. Best advice I can give for someone starting out is get hold of the strongest, most vigorous plants with good root systems that you can. So many good folk are put off because they start with poor plants and loose them. And also, some good folk on RU-vid offer a wealth of advice - get in 'the circle' and gain the knowledge from all of these experienced orchid growers. It's a great hobby.
SO happy to have found you! I’m mainly a cymbidium grower. I have 14. I inherited a large pot bound dendrobium. She grew it as a house plant. Didn’t know the name or type. Once I broke the pot open and started to split it I found the pic. It is an Aussie pink, dendrobium. Lots to learn about dendrobiums! Do you know this type and will it need to rest? Also, when I transplanted I used a mix of small fir bark chips and perlite. I added sphagnum moss cut into small bits and mixed the whole thing up. I added a palletized orchid food. I’m now concerned I shouldn’t have added the shagnum? Any thoughts that could help? 🙏thanks!
Sounds like it may be a kingianum type but without pics, difficult to tell. If it is, it will need to cool right down in Winter with very little water and no feed - but need to check with perhaps a google search to see if it is a Den. kingianum?
hi roger my dendrobium had flowered and dropped them when i bought it i noticed this morning that all the old canes are growing taller and shooting out new stems is this normal it is from a super market so it only says dendrobium on the lable the old dead flowers were white if that helps
Not always, but mainly it's to do with the size first and the way they grow naturally - the large ones normally grow in a pendulous fashion so do well mounted eg the anosmum types. Another factor is the Winter care - those that need a full Winter rest are easier to deal with on a mount as many roots will be outside the moss and can be given the smallest amount of water - no so easy to control in a pot. The last thing is the 'continuous growers' - as these like to stay moist most of the time, this is easier to do in a pot.

This is an old video. The Winter of 2015-2016 was not that successful whereas the Winter of 2017-2018 was - so videos produced around that time would have much better info on resting Dendrobiums. There is a set of videos in my playlist ''Winter Resting Dendrobiums' which may help.
