In this video, I go over my ENTIRE "dungeon" - where all the magic happens! I briefly overview my game table, show off my miniatures cabinet, and give you a behind-the-screen look at how I run my campaigns. I also give you a good look at quite a few aesthetic pieces I have that really help immerse my players in their adventures. Whether you're a DM looking for inspiration, a player looking for some cool content, or someone new to DnD looking to see how addicting it can be, there's plenty in this video for everyone!

Your setup is the envy of many! Compared to other showcases though, your room and setup feels very practical , like if actual games were being held in the room which has happened.

Must be nice to have friends who appreciate all you do for them. I wouldn't know, even though I'm very similar in wanting the game to me awesome. I have a very similar set up at my place- a game table for 8, with lights, power, and storage, monitor for images, tons of painted monsters and crafting I did, etc., so my friends could play in total immersion. I had... HAD sh#tty friends, but good for you! Nice set up. Enjoy!!!

Very nice set up. It's nice to have a space that is unfinished, its a blank canvas that you'll continue to add to and it will eventually have it's own stories to tell. I'm an old guy that started playing D&D with my friends when we were in High School probably 1979 or so. My friend got the white box set with those very first rules. We always played in the basement of one of our houses. Those cinderblock walls made me very nostalgic. We could not have ever dreamed of all the technology that is affordable and easy to modify into our gaming today. I turned 60 this year and still play whenever I can maybe 6 times a year (very hard to schedule) and I run a campaign for my adult children and their friends about every other month or so. I've been thinking about building a game table with a TV built into it for a while now I would be interested is seeing what you did. I just missed out on being one of you first 10 subscribers happy to be number 11. Good luck with your channel.

I can not thank you enough for the kind words! It's an honor to be amongst people who have played for so long. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't get into DnD sooner 😂 And I had originally planned on covering the walls in that area, but as I added a few things, I realized I kind of liked the vibe of the blocks - and my players actually agreed! Hahaha. So I think it will remain unfinished, but at some point I'll definitely cover the ceiling and then probably add fake support beams to cover all the wires. Thanks again for subscribing! Reading your comment is actually how I found out I hit double digits 😂

Very interesting to see! We tend to banish tech from our table during games, because people tend to get distracted and it reduces immersion (in our view). We use candles and such for light, and everything’s on paper. The only tech we’re using these days is a tablet ( for me, the game master) because it’s faster to search something (if it’s urgent), and it’s easier to control the music than an usb stick and a remote. But it’s in a book-like leather case and it’s get use as little as possible. It would be interesting to try out your setup and to see how the game differs with so much well integrated technology 😁 - many regards from Germany 👋😊

Hey there! Thanks so much for checking out the setup, and WELCOME TO THE CHANNEL from the U.S.! Love meeting so many people from all over 😊 I TOTALLY support those who wanna play a low/no tech game - the immersion will be so much more organic! I started off the exact same way - paper maps, minis, paper character sheets, notebooks, and a plastic sleeved DM screen. I definitely loved it, but I kept thinking about different ways that the tech might make it a bit more efficient... then it obviously spiraled from there 🤣 I refuse to give up the in-person gameplay though! So all of the tech introduced is done so in a way that it supports the face-to-face sessions. But I would never say this is BETTER than the good ol' pen and paper sessions that many still prefer 😊

Ever thought about having someone in your group run initiative? I realized less "tech" helped speed up and simplify my sessions. I have a tv too, and I realized that it's awesome, but I shouldn't get too bogged down by all my tabs and screens. So i got rid of my DM screen, use a notebook for monster hp (instead of a program), and recommend Obsidian for all of my DM notes.
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
Having someone else handle the initiative is a GREAT idea! I wish I had thought to do that back when I was doing everything by hand 😂 But honestly, Improved Initiative has been fantastic at making everything go faster because it not only tracks initiative for me, but it displays to the players who's coming up next so they can prepare, tracks conditions and health for the monsters (and PCs if you wanted to), and shows the stat block of the current monster. Not knocking the idea though! This just worked really well for me 🤷‍♂️ And I've never heard of Obsidian, I'll for sure check it out!
@theberndog
@theberndog 3 месяца назад
I appreciate the response!! I like to keep monster stats hidden and conditions are marked with little disks i place on the minis. But your enthusiasm for Improved Initiative makes me want to check it out. Thank you.@@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
Haha, sure thing! And sorry for the confusion, the players don't actually see any of the monster stats. All they see on their end is a "health tracker", which are really just descriptions for how the monster looks! So it might say, "healthy" if it's been untouched, or "bloodied" if it's close to death. You see the exact health on your screen as the DM, and it changes the description as you decrease it's health.It's eliminated the number of times my players used to ask, "so how does it look??", hahaha. And I've DEFINITELY considered getting condition rings, even with Improved Initiative, just for that extra visual and reminder for when they're planning their next move.

I played around with an idea like this. Like you I used the table for other things so recessing the horizontal monitor wasn't an option. In the end I just went with two vertical monitors because players would have to stand to be able to see the horizontal monitor which didn't seem like much fun. Thanks for the vid!
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
OHHH wait a minute, I hadn't even thought about vertical being an option because I use physical miniatures! @@MooreDnD I used to play physical miniatures and tokens, usually just on a battlemat. But honestly Ive forced my players into theater of the mind, like we played in the 80s. I show them a room on the map, at least they don't have to map and it is faster, then tell them about it and they say we go to the top left corner or take the door on the right, etc. I use gimp with layers for each room. Not nearly as cool as your setup. You rock.

Playing since the 80's... that is AMAZING! I love hearing stories from other that have been playing for decades - it seems like the older days of D&D were such a different world 😊 And I totally support playing via theater of mind! gets rid of all the pause time of moving the miniatures around and such. Plus I literally just talked ALL about GIMP in my stream! One of my most used apps for sure (including every one of my thumbnails 😂). Very interesting concept of using it for a fog of war though! That's genius. Thanks so much for the kind words and support 😊

Fantastic set up. So many gaming tables fall short because they are designed for board games and the lip is usually only 4 inches before the vault or recessed play area. Not nearly enough space to put a TTRPG book or laptop. With all the screens, and having a 50 in screen so close, has anyone complained of light fatigue or "floating minis" on the TV? My forever DM uses a TV for maps, and during particularly long encounters, it can become a strain to only be 2ish feet away from a bright TV. And floating minis are usually caused by some protective screen over the TV, but with that, minis seem to "float" above the map, making it annoying to tell exactly what square a creature may be in unless you start up and basically look straight down.
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much!! That was one of the BIGGEST concerns I had when designing the table - player space! Standard paper alone is 11" tall, so I wanted to make sure I at LEAST took that into consideration 😂 Regarding the "floating minis", I know EXACTLY what you're talking about, but I actually don't have any problems with it myself simply because I was cheap and didn't invest in a cover for the TV 🙄 We literally put the minis directly on the screen, haha. I would NOT recommend it, but luckily it's been over a year now and we haven't had an issue! And regarding the eye strain, no one has complained about it to me yet, but I can DEFINITELY see how it would get to somebody over time. We do incorporate breaks into the game, so that might help, but we do spend a looooot of time around the screens. Thanks so much again for the kind words! 😊

@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
Hey there! I could definitely do a short on my map storage, but I actually don't do anything special 😊 And now that I only use digital maps, it's all stored on a USB drive 😂 But when I was doing paper maps, I printed the maps on 8.5x11 sheets, then taped them together in rows. So for example, if The whole map consisted of 3 pieces of paper wide and three down, I would tape the pieces together that were next to each other in each row, but NOT tape the rows to each other. Then, when I was done with a map, I would fold the rows up, ending with something typically slightly smaller than a sheet of paper and store them in an accordion folder (which if you've never used one/aren't familiar, you'll find it right away if you google that term). Each pocket in the accordion folder would hold all of the folded up rows of each map, so you could have a dozen or more maps in one folder. Then I would just label the little tabs of the folder as to what map they were 😊 I hope this helps!

Hey thanks so much! And I actually made a video all about the use of FDM or Resin printers for printing miniatures 😊 I definitely agree that resin printers are SOO much nicer quality in the end, but they're just a little too messy, small, and dealing with the ventilation of the fumes too cumbersome in my opinion. But that's also because I had no intention of painting them either, haha. So FDM just worked better in my scenario, but I ABSOLUTLEY support the use of resin printers because the final product is 🤌 *chef's kiss*

What I would like to do it build out a similar table, but I would like to put tablets or monitors into each place as well, currently everyone has their laptop or tablet out to move their characters and see their dndbeyond sheet, it would be nice to have everything built into the tabletop so everything could be clear for gameplay. Though I recognize that would be very expensive just due to the electronics, still cheaper and better than wyrmwood, but expensive.
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
Oh man that would be AWESOME! Most of the stuff me and my players do is paper and pencil, so I hadn't thought about incorporating electronics for players. But for those people that use laptops for their character sheets and such, that would be AMAZING!
@FlexDRG
@FlexDRG 3 месяца назад
Making the monitor touch sensitive (touchscreen or IR setup) could help with negating some of the extra electronics. As players can just move the tokens on the screen. But it's often that you can't use mini's anymore as you'd need to move the digital token and the mini both. That said, there are a few vtt's that work with an IR bezel to recognize mini positions (Arkenforge?) Btw adding USB (type A and C) to the power outlets might be nice to. So people don't need to keep bringing their power supply with them. And you could have a bunch of spare cables.

Yeah I think a touch screen would be SUPER cool! I definitely love my minis though, so I don't know how much use it would get 😂 And I actually HAD USB outlets in my hand at home depot when I was buying all the materials for the table, but I knew my wife was already gonna kill me for the money I was spending on the table, so I figured this was a good chance to "cut a few costs (albeit small 😂).

Hey there! Trust me when I say I totally get the stress 😂 This is the same group that was there for my very first session, so I've always had 6 people. Honestly, the biggest thing I can pitch is to remember that the power of the party feels like it grows almost exponentially with more players, so your encounters are probably going to be WAY easier for them than you planned for. They continue to destroy everything I throw at em that should theoretically be difficult 😂 BUT, I would also like to say that it's totally OKAY! They have fun every single time, and that's all that matters. So just enjoy it and let em beat up your baddies! .... or feel free to throw in something crazy once in a while that flees before killing them to reel them back in 🤣

Curious what you are using for Fog of war to the TV. I know you could use Roll20 or another VTT but for people who just want to display a map and have fog of war without anything else I am wondering what is out there.
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
Hey there! I actually just use Owlbear Rodeo. I've never used Roll20 or Foundry, so I'm not sure if it's similar to those or how similar, but its free and works perfect! I just plug my laptop into the TV, run an incognito browser on the TV screen, open the DM portion of Owlbear Rodeo on a browser on my laptop and copy the "invite player" link into the incognito browser of the TV. Works perfect for my setup and makes the fog of war super easy to control!

I am planning to build something soon and keep looking at designs but yours seems close to what I want. Would love to see what it looks like when you're finished 😊 And if I had the option now, I definitely would have incorporated the TV INTO the table, rather than in a case on top. I just purchased a TV for my gaming tabletop and am way overwhelmed by gaming process. Please make a video of how you run an encounter using your TV as a map. What program you running? Are you using printed minis or digital tokens? If using tokens do you control player movement or are the players moving them from another device? How do you get map to full screen? As you can tell, I have a ton of questions. I currently am regretting adding the TV. It has prevented us from playing because of the digital map learning curve.
@MooreDnD
@MooreDnD 3 месяца назад
Hey Luke! Definitely don't feel alone, and don't get discouraged - it look me WAY too long to figure out how to incorporate the TV into the setup 😂 I spent countless hours scouring Reddit and RU-vid trying to figure out how DM's did it. Luckily, once you figure it out, it's a GAME CHANGER. I love the request and will DEFINITELY make a video of how I run my encounters using the TV, BUT, to try and help get you started beforehand, here's a brief overview of what I have and how I do it: First, I'll answer your questions: 1) I'm running Owlbear Rodeo (It's free!) 2) I'm using printed minis, though digital tokens can be used as well! 3) If I were using digital tokens, I would probably have the players move the tokens using their phones/laptops just to make life easy, but could definitely control the tokens for them if they just wanted to point on the TV where they wanted to go. 4) Zooming the map is super easy on Owlbear Rodeo, so you'll definitely be able to get it full screen! Now for my process: A) As mentioned, the program I use to "project" the map onto the TV is Owlbear Rodeo. There are definitely other apps, this is just the one I use because it's free. You'll want to do a little learning about how to work Owlbear Rodeo so that way you can control it easily. B) Once you create your account, upload whatever map you would like to project onto the T.V. to Owlbear Rodeo and scale it so the grid on the map matches the digital grid on Owlbear Rodeo. C) Once you have your map uploaded, you can do a bunch of things like add tokens and even hide them if you want for monsters (visible to the DM, hidden from players), add effects to the map like spell areas, and much more. What I PRIMARILY do with my maps, however, is use the fog of war tool to hide whatever I don't want my players to see right away, such as rooms they haven't been in. Now that your map is ready... D) Plug your computer into the TV - I used an HDMI cord but any display port will work. E) Open Owlbear Rodeo in one instance of an internet browser on your computer, then open a second, INCOGNITO internet browser and drag it over to the TV. It needs to be incognito, otherwise you won't be able to open the player version, just the DM version. F) Open your map in Owlbear Rodeo on your computer. In the upper left corner, you'll see a button to invite players. This will copy a link to your keyboard. G) Go over to the other, incognito browser now (the one on your TV) and paste the link. This will open the player version of owlbear rodeo and show a popup with a random name generated and an "ask to join" button. Click the button - the name doesn't matter. H) Back on your computer, you'll now see a popup that says, "Someone wants to join the room", where you'll click "Admit". I) Now the player view will be shown on the TV, and you can control it with the same mouse you're using on your computer. So I just zoom the map on the player view until I like the scaling (I just eyeball the grid with the base of a medium-sized miniature), then pretty much run everything from my computer from there (including removing the fog of war, moving digital tokens, etc.). *** This is also the same procedure for giving your players access to the room. You just need to send the pasted link to them. Then they can open it up on their laptops/phones and control the tokens. One quick tip as well: On the player version of the map (displayed on the TV), I usually collapse the bar on the right side by hitting the little carrot/arrow at the top of it, I collapse the list of players on the left by hitting the little head and shoulders button just above them, and then I hit F11 to full screen the browser and remove the search bar, taskbar, etc. It just looks better in my opinion and I never use any of that stuff on the players side😊 Hopefully this helps, and definitely don't give up! It's worth it :)

@@MooreDnD I also want to make my own game room, but I live in an apartment so I cant do much in it, not enough space and not allowed to build or paint etc in it. Me and my friends (none of us has the space for a game room) is actually renting an apartment together that we have as a "gaming room" so we do not lack a place to game in, but its always nice to have something that you own yourself and can do whatever you want in without having to get the approval from everybody and put your own touches to it, or just to be able to invite some friends over for some dinner and a quick game session. Screens and Monitors are a GM-struggle. =) To have a screen with "mood & ambiance" -pictures and such on is great. We tried to put a big screen TV on the wall behind the "GM seat" for ambient pictures and stuff like that, worked well enough, a little bit of a hassle for GM who has to turn around to point at things or just cast a glance so all is ok, but then again, when you have a monitor in front of you, you cant see it at all. So that's an idea for you, move the swords and put a TV on the wall behind you (unless you feel its to far away or that you block it to much when GMing). =)

@@MooreDnD Yeah I have 2 groups that tries to play once a week (ofc life and stuff happens and we have to skip a week or 2 sometimes, and we have breaks under vacation times when ppl tend to be away), and I have 2 other groups that plays once per month or so, so im pretty lucky on the gaming part. =) We also play some Warhammer and other games and that was the biggest part for pooling funds and renting a place, so we could leave the minis mid-game and pick it up later if we didn't have the time to finish the game. Wives and partners wasn't to keen to have the kitchen tables occupied with minis for a couple of days or even a week so we had to figure something out and the solution was to rent a place dedicated for gaming. Epic setup! The miniatures needs to be painted, though! At least some speedpaint .... Prime them grey, do "slop" highlight with white oil paint (or acrylic, if you do not want to deal with oil paint's drying time or odor), then apply Speedpaint. Or similar. You can put a lot more time into it, but this "slapchop" or "zenithal undercoat with speedpaint" is going to be enough.

Hahaha, I appreciate all the input/suggestions! Regarding the miniatures, i just don't have much interest in painting them - not really my thing. I'll for sure be covering the ceiling with a wooden plank-look, the wires and my radon pipe with faux beams to look like they're supporting the ceiling, and we've talked about a plaster w/wood look for the wall. I'll also be adding a secret bookshelf door when we finish the basement some day! So keep an eye out in the future because I'm sure I'll be making some content out of it 😊
