Hi there!
This past week my dog went ahead and got cataract surgery in her left eye and I wanted to document the experience. Whether you want to watch for fun or you are debating on getting this surgery for your dog, I hope it is both interesting and informational for you! I know when my dog Lola got this surgery for the first time last year on her right I and I was doing my research there was conflicting opinions on whether I should get the surgery for her or not. Overall I am quite happy with the outcome of this surgery. I hope you enjoy watching!

That’s amazing! I hope your fur baby recovers quickly! My dog didn’t have the surgery on both eyes at the same time so just be careful with your pup as they adjust to their new vision in both eyes. I’m sure your dog will be so happy when she/he wakes up and has new vision! So incredible!

I was really glad we did both eyes at the same time. It takes diligently putting in 3 sets if eye drops for weeks. Our 6 wok Herrera just got his cone off. Surgery was well worth it. They do it just like human, but the need to out them under. We had to keep his cine on for 3 wks. Since it was clear he got use to it. Good luck, and blessing to all. NOTE: you need to wait at least 5 minutes between drops. We waited 15 minutes. Also, we paid $ 3,000 per eye. Money well spent.

Update. 2 months out from eye surgery Keoni has gotten better and better. I think he was not able to see longer than we thought, Everything is going great. He is still on 2 eye drops once per day. He can see wonderfully. His eyes seem to weep less as well. We are so grateful for his eye surgery. I would defiantly keep the cone one the duration recommended, and make a chart to check off on the meds and I drops. Anyone can message me on FB if you have any s pacific questions. I would love to help you if I can.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. My 9-year old Maltese was diagnosed with diabetes 2-months ago and now has mature cataracts in both eyes leaving her blind. It's heartbreaking to watch her inability to see things. I did meet with an Veterinary Ophthalmologist 4-days ago. Preliminary tests indicate she is a good candidate for surgery and the Ophthalmologist spoke with primary Vet to ensure that Sophie's diabetes is under control and to receive thoughts/feedback, etc. on Sophie's overall well being to undergo surgery. This surgery is scheduled in 2 weeks (both eyes) and I'm extremely nervous and apprehensive, but do want my baby girl to see again. Curious if your pet had any underlying issues that caused cataracts.

@KatherineMichelleYT
@KatherineMichelleYT 3 года назад
Yes, I’m happy I did them as each one worsened separately. I wasn’t sure if the second eye would worsen and didn’t want to wait. Plus that way she always had one good eye. The thought of her being fully blind in both eyes is too upsetting. And I was told that if I waited too long that would possibly lead to a higher chance of complications. Lola was fine being put under twice but also she was tested for a variety of things first and so you can see with a eye specialist for your dogs situation specifically. Good luck and I wish your dog the best!

@KatherineMichelleYT
@KatherineMichelleYT 2 года назад
Hi! Thank you so much! I was also super anxious, especially since I had to do it twice (one eye got bad and then a year later or so the next one did). I’m super happy I did it, so worth it! Her eyes were completely clouded and she would probably be near blind if I didn’t do it. Now she can see just fine (just hesitant in low light but that’s understandable). I wish your dog a successful surgery! I still give my dog 2 different types of eye drops a day but it’s super easy and quick!
@kaylatennessen1291
@kaylatennessen1291 2 года назад
Yay! So happy to hear that she is doing well. She’s absolutely adorable! My dog has cataracts forming in both eyes, but the left one has left her pretty much blind in that eye (only sees some shadows). The right eye is still immature and visual. My doctor only recommends one eye right now because she’s a bit higher risk…she passed 2/3 pre op tests. Her drainage angle isn’t good which can increase chances of glaucoma. However, he’s also doing an endo laser surgery at the same time to open up her drainage. I guess that puts the success rate back up to her passing those 3 tests. Because of all that, he’d rather see how she does with one eye first (doesn’t wanna possibly take away vision from an eye that already has it). Sorry for the big explanation LOL. I feel like I could write a book on this topic now. I worry about her going under and the possible complications that could arise. I don’t want to be “selfish” because she’s a happy dog right now ! I just would be so sad if she couldn’t see anymore 😞 Did Lola have any elevated eye pressure after or get sick from the antibiotics and steroids post surgery? Thanks again so much for listening to me! 💗
@KatherineMichelleYT
@KatherineMichelleYT 2 года назад
@@kaylatennessen1291 that’s good to hear that your dogs success rate got better! She reacted well to the antibiotics, they’re just keeping an eye on her eye pressures to avoid retinal detachment. So I am also trying to give her supplements called Ocu-Glo but she hates it so it’s been a process to learn how to give it to her. She’s now dealing with kidney disease but that is unrelated to the eye surgery and is a whole other challenge to deal with. But I’m taking her to the vet and am giving her all the medical care she needs and am hoping for the best. We have to take care of our fur babies!

Hello! I would say it is closer to 4K+ per eye. And I am in the greater Seattle area! Yes, I love how simple they made all the medications because there were a lot. Hi, watching this video because my sister's 8 year old just had one eye done, how long did it take for your dog to start seeing better again? Her checkup is on Monday.. just wondering.
@KatherineMichelleYT
@KatherineMichelleYT 2 года назад
It’s normally quite fast, about a few hours.

@@KatherineMichelleYT wow, it's been 4 days now and she's still having trouble, her follow up appointment is on Monday, thanks for the info.

@@des9655 I hope she’ll be okay! I know it varies for each dog and it takes time for them to be accustomed to their new vision. Lola is still uncertain in low lighting and so I always make sure that she has ample light around the house.

Hi did you mention how much it was??
@KatherineMichelleYT

No, I didn’t mention it. I’m sure it varies depending on the vet clinic, insurance, etc. It can cost up to $4k so it’s definitely not cheap but this surgery gave my dog back her vision so it’s worth it to me 😊

@@KatherineMichelleYT we payed 3,000 per rye but that included all the after visits. We also went to a canine eye specialist in Missouri.

Mh Jabi ( Compassion) in needing cataract surgery Ok. 3k. At least not over 10, 000 that one eye specialist receptionist told me. Any pet insurance would be covering cataract surgery? *-♡~

Is there a age restriction for this surgery ? I have a 13 year old chihuahua full of life but his eyes have gotten a little bit cloudy

@@angiewoo4819 I’m sure every dog responds differently and it is a big surgery with a big adjustment for them. Of course ask your vet and see what they say. There should also be a checkup appointment at some point too :)

Hi Katherine, I'm Spanish and I'm using the youtube translator into Spanish, I thought I understood that the first eye operation was a success, but in the end I ended up losing sight of the first eye, is that true? And that's why you say there are more cons than pros? How is your dog still seeing well? Greetings and thank you.
