My Dog's Favorite Toy is... Ball, Tug or ME?

Figuring out what your dog's favorite toy is can be a mystery, but in this video I try to take the mystery out of it for you.
There are different reasons that dogs like different toys and certain dogs will prefer certain types of toys depending on their personality or training technique. My dog Goofy loves his ball and his tug toy, so I address how I choose which toy and how I get him to play with me in a fun way.
Remember, all of my video dog training lessons are available on my website at:

Your videos are always amazing and inspiring to be a better dog owner. The relationship you have with Goofy is utterly amazing, I suspect is he could talk, he would say you are favorite

My dog's favorite toy is me. It doesn't matter if it's a ball, tug, plushie, or Frisbee, as long as it's me throwing it, she is excited. When we go to the dog park, she just wants to play with me.

I was doing this exact exercise with Nyx at the hotel in California last week waiting for our load home back to Oh Canada, but with her frisbees. I was mixing in obedience and tricks, and I had a few people ask me if she was a working dog or a show dog, and they were quite surprised when I told them she's just a well disciplined pet Dobie...as our Lab was getting pets from every person watching lol Time and effort pays off! Cheers

Yet another great video! I have 2 GSDs a 5yo male & 2 yo female. My boy loves his balls, especially the Chuck It brand. 2nd is Tug toys. My female loves Tug toys. When going for hikes, sticks! The male loves BIGGER the better & my female loves to try to take whatever stick he has to no avail, Lol! But throwing sticks is a great game for us. Allowing training & fun at the same time. Practicing the “Out & Leave it” commands reinforces them. As always, a great video! Thanks!

Youre the Best Robert!! -Thanks for making our (me&my dogs) relationship so Great! Your training makes all the difference. Im a member at your webbsite, and i have never regret it ever! At first, i thought; ill be a member a mounth or two; too get too all the good stuff. But i realized, that even if i dont watch your videos everyday; its soo beneficial too just popp in too the webbsite; whenever i want too, -too adress a certain issue or train a specific thing. Its like having a dogtrainer "on call" whenever i have a question. I Warmly Recommend Robert and his site, for all types of dogowners, from puppies too seniordogs. One always learns something new. Thanks again Robert Your doing such a Great job! much appriciated that you share it all! Best Regards Chris & Harry "the dog".. from Sweden

@@RobertCabralDogs I also don’t understand this. In the beginning of this video you told him to out 4 times and he ignored you. For me this is unacceptable. Repeating commands and having the dog ignore you. In most of your videos Goofy appears to be highly trained so this surprised me. I understand your credentials and appreciate for the most part the job you’ve done with Goofy. By the time my pups are adults they have been taught “ do it the first time and do it for me. “. I get my pups addicted to my praise and that’s their reward vs bribing them with treats and toys.

When training your dog in protection work he has to out immediately and every time . Otherwise you have no business creating a protection dog. If your dog attacks someone and you need him to release you can’t “ just talk him into it . “

Do you have any suggestions for stopping a six month old Polish Hound from eating every stick he comes across..other than a muzzle? I've suggested long leash training to the owner as she allows him off leash and then tells him off when he eats sticks. I'm fearful he will do serious internal injury unless something changes.

What amount of free time should a young working dog have? We train our 3 month old malinois 4-5 hours per day and are unsure of the number of hours of playtime on his own that he should have per day.

At first glance this video appears to be a rather light issue when an owner is focused on nipping, jumping, aggression or socializing. However in reality it is one of the most important because it shows the significance of me being in charge and control of the relationship as well as the fact that unless I am my dog’s number one focus she won’t respond in kind when I need it, as in recall, out, leave it. Thank you Robert for another brick in the foundation of my relationship with Maggie.

The problem I see with this is that I don’t want to be bribing my dog to drop something all the time. What happens when he bites a decoy? How do you get him to let go if you need 2 toys all the time? On top of that it devalues the toy he would currently have in his mouth because he is always looking for the next toy. In my opinion you should only use 1 toy but people should do what works for them. Robert is certainly a good trainer and it’s alright if we have opposing views. I’m sure he has answers for these issues and has thought about them

Hi Mark, interesting counter-argument, so please present what works for you? If your dog has a high value toy, but you wish to retrieve it, what is the dog getting in return for releasing the toy?
@Mwyse414
@Mwyse414 2 года назад
@@tonycole9593 you have to think of tug like a boxing match. Both sides are going at it like they want to knock the other out but now the bell rings. It doesn’t matter if one side was right about to knock the other out they will stop and they will get a chance to fight again after the break. The out should be the bell and this is how you want the dog to think about it. It’s is just an intermission. This is Ivan balabanovs stuff and not mine. He has a video about the out and I highly suggest everyone watch it
@tonycole9593

@@Mwyse414 thanks for the pointer, yes I've heard of Ivan, and he is certainly an accomplished trainer and teacher. However I don't think I can afford 160$ for a video on how to teach "Out" command.

This video was interesting. Dog I lived with liked to play with her humans and with toys, like a ball. I believe dog liked her people better than toys. I tried while playing to take the ball, and I said "Give", while I and dog both held the ball; doggy would not release the ball. I then tried saying "Give", dog still held the ball, so I stopped playing and walked away, into the house. Not so fun now, but doggy followed me and came into the house. The next time we played with a ball, and I held the ball and said "Give", the little doggy released the ball from her grip. Nice! Effective.

When my lab was still living, sometimes we would "wrestle around on the ground". We would start out with toys and end up chasing each other around the yard and rolling around on the ground. Is this something you can do with a dog like Goofy ?
