I AM a wife, so I won't be using my mixer beaters, but when I was about 9, my dad taught me to use a folded up wire coat hanger, chucked into the drill the same way. If it gets gunky, you don't have to wash it! Just smash up a new one (get some angst out), mix and go!
I mix in my pan also guy. What I do is squeeze 2 1/2 sponges of water in my pan and I add 2 cups of powder in and I mix in the pan with a 1 inch knife to blend it. That’s my go to system.
The mix ratio for the powder is 2-1 I use convenient store cup. Cut one off the take two scoops powder into second cup. Cut this cup off at top line. The small is for water the big powder. If to wet cut a little off the water cup if to dry cut down powder cup. Once you get it dialed in it’s perfect every time without adjusting. And you can have different sets for different amounts of mud. Mine are marked A B C
I actually found a 6 inch whisk in a drawer that was never used and chucked it to my cordless drill - WORKS GREAT!!!!!!! Perfect size for a Mud pan and you can get them at the Dollar Store.
Lol hell yeah! I always use a 3" or smaller knife to get it going.... Once it's not splashing water I can finish mixing with 6" or 10" or whatever I'm using..... I also let it set in the pan a few minutes then give it another quick mix and it spreads nice..... The time I let it set is when I clean up my mess and close package up tight, I think a couple minutes really makes sure the water absorbs in the mix....... BUT, I'm going with your idea for mixing now lol
i keep a bag of 20 minute AND 45 minute mud in my truck . they are my friends ! once , having neither , i resorted to using plaster of paris . . . BIG mistake ! i did get the job done and it did turn out satisfactorily , but it was hell working with .
Ok. An update. The mixer beater is a great idea. I recently went to Walmart and bought a mainstays corder mixer for $13. The beaters profile match my mud box. I can run the 2 beaters at the same time and the combined width is the same as my ss welded mud box. The mixer has adjustable speed control and will mix hot mud well and quickly.
Nice video! I’ve always used the premixed buckets. Figured the dry mix was past my skill level. You make it seem a lot more do-able. I may just give it a shot! THANKS!
Glad I could help. And remember that you will save a ton of money if you are using the pre-mix mud and buy it in the boxes instead of the buckets. Just use your own bucket.
Love this! I had a spare egg beater blade so when I came to plastering I thought it might work and it did, just like you. I even mix in a large stainless steel cake mixing bowl and scoop the mud up with a silicone cake spatula - makes managing the hot mud and cleanig up easier.
Egg beater is a great idea. I've used the little paint stirrers for 1 gal cans, but they don't work well and are pretty messy. The only time I've ever mixed more than 1 full bucket of hot mud at a time was when my partner and I had to skim-coat raw, unprimed cement ceilings in a condo's hallway remodel (& I was mixing 2 buckets of 45 at a time). Every other compound either blistered really badly, or completely fell off the ceiling (except hot mud). We (partner & I) had tried nearly everything we could think of, when I remembered we had an old 12" box in the shop (the wheels were lost), so brought that to the job one day. Tried 90 min mud in the first batch, but it took too long to cure and we lost a few places, the 2nd batch of 45 was perfect: mixed a bucket, pumped the box full, ran stripes down the halls' ceilings (~10" apart), then came back when it was dry, knocked off the few goobers (no wheels = less goobers), and boxed the 10" middle strips. Probably looked like an idiot running up and down those halls, but mixing 2 buckets (of 45 min) worked like a dream. (Really built up my shoulders too.) Only thing was, when I emptied the last box from the 2nd bucket, I'd immediately have to completely clean the bucket, pump, & box. Was a lot more work than cleaning out joint compound, but because it didn't blister or fall off, was worth it. In less than 2 hours we'd have about 200' of ceiling coated, then we'd tape it off and prime it the next morning.
Your amazing thank you for saving me in the next month with this im aming to mesh our garage im 34 years old plan on using sheet rock 90 this helps me alot because i cant afford a slow drill and the advice will allow me to save wasting mud. Thanks.
I'm just an ice cream loving novice who only does repairs of drywall in his apt. I want to thank you very much for tips like this one! On to the next That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement video.
I use the 20 but I have never used a cake mixer. I have used a mixer on the 45 and 90 in a bucket. Here in the future I will have to give the cake mixer a try. We are never to old to learn new things
Yes its a great tip. I have been doing that for years already. I even bought a hand mixer from a pawn shop for 5 dollars and it came with two beaters. I do that if I just want to thin down a pan even with all purpose. Just a few scoops add a little water, then beat it up. Done. Works awesome
Great idea. Now I just need to stop by the Deseret Industries or Salvation Army store next time I'm in town and see if I can find a mixing blade that my wife won't strangle me for using. :)
The best way I found a mix of 20 minute mud is to use the blue mud mix ball it comes with a paddle and you use your drill it’s super fast and the soft paddle mixes everything inside the ball and there’s no mess because it’s a silicone ball you’re mixing in.
I have used a paint mixing paddle for a long time, but i still end up with clumps in the corner, so i end up taking a putty knife and scraping it off the corners. Recently i was told i should mix it in a bucket and transfer it to the pan. Makes total sense and no build up with clumps
If you look on the bag of hot mud, they generally say not to worry about the clumps. I don’t. I mix it till it’s mostly smooth and the lumps will work out as you spread it. Overmixing hot mud can cause its own issues.
saw this, searched for the old eggbeater.... but she tossed it. Darn. I did use some schluter scrap edging to mix thinset... but I had to cut it down to fit into the chuck. That actually worked very well too.
Great tips. I'm not a neat hand mixer, and it was a struggle to mix 5/20 min setting compound in a plastic container and transferring to a pan with enough time left to keep it workable. So much so that I was about to switch to 45/90 (or even 120!) min settings. Between the tape and kitchen utensil, you single handedly beat my problem (haha). You sir, saved hours overall in random person's life. Thank you!
Nathan, 5 minutes is very difficult to use if you mix more than a very small amount. I can run out a full pan of it on one larger repair, or maybe 2-3 close together but it's pushing it. I do that often, but 20 minute is my preferred speed for several repairs, or one requiring several pans of mud. I would go with 45 to be safe if you're not highly experienced as the faster stuff can really bite you, and it has teeth, lol
I think I forgot to mention that you can pick these up at thrift stores for just a couple of dollars. Hope it helped you out and let me know how it goes. Thanks
This is a great hack. I also use the Mud Mixball when I need to do small batches. It comes with basically a silicone spatula with a hex shank. Works great and so easy to clean. Just let any leftover dry and it pops right out. You should add it to your Amazon store.
I wonder if we could use those free paint can openers we get from the hardware stores???? Just cut off the curved end then chuck it in the drill. Since they are free and I have tons of them just toss them in the trash when done.
Thank you Thank Thank you!!!! I've been wanting to try something, anything to make it easier, quicker and to get it smoother, I'm trying it first thing in the morning but I've gotta make sure I sneak one of the egg beaters out so my mom doesn't know 🤣🤣🤣
I use an eggbeater-type mixer for small jobs also. But it's made for mud, not for cooking. You can buy them on Amazon. But I never mix in a pan. It's about impossible to get a "fast" mix and not have clumps in a square-cornered pan. . I always mix in a two-gallon pale. Or one gallon for very tiny batches. Also, the first thing I was taught, was to always have a clean and wet pan and knives. Your work is only as good as the mud is debris free. For all-purpose mud. Never work out of a pale. I remove mud, scrape the sides, wash the sides all the way down to the mud each time, with a green scotch bright pad and replace the cover. So it's like a new pale every time I go back for more. Constantly wash the pan and knife each time the pan gets empty. and sometimes the edges of the pan before it's empty. And the knife contently. Just keeping everything clean and wet alone will increase the quality of your work tenfold. But that pan and knife you have is a disgrace lol. Anyone that's not used to mudding, seeing this video will fight dry chunks for the rest of their life when mudding. Any tiny chunk in the mud will leave ruts. I know you know that. But you are not showing the people watching. The first coat is not so important. But as you start the following coats it's crucial.
Actually, if you read the instructions on the bag of hot mud it says to not over mix it and that some lumps are fine. I do it that way all the time and the lumps work them self out because they are very soft and not like the hard dried chunkies you’re referring to. Try it. It’s less work to mix it, and it doesn’t mess up the setting time like over mixing can
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I have found that if I don't clean the mud pans and knives thoroughly between batches that mud from previous batch will start to harden in my new mud, creating lumps. I agree that if you are making a new batch that the process of application will help to further mix your new mud, but leaving old mud in the pan or bucket is a recipe for lumps in my experience.
Yes, old material will cause batches of mud to harden and set up weirdly, but I’ve only found that to be when it’s on the same day. The next day, some dried up hot mud won’t affect my new batches.
QUESTION!!!!! : ) Tub is a few inches narrower than the bathroom. So there will be an outside corner where the tub wall meets the main wall. One side will just be sheetrock and joint compound. The other wall will be Hardi Backer and tile. (to the corner) How would you finish that corner? Corner bead over both sides? Compound both sides? Something else? Thanks Bud : )

Yeah it does but hot water, And 5 minute is usually too fast for my needs. But i sometimes do hot water and 20 to give more like 15 minutes. I’m all about speed so i get it.
Too funny ... just last night I grabbed an old hand wisk & a cheap round-bottom mixing bowl because mixing in a rectangular pan with a narrow blade just didn't make any sense to me. I know I have an old hand mixer that no longer holds both beaters - only one side still locks into place. I'm gonna' hunt that down asap so I won't even need to tie up my drill ... it's in a fix-it box somewhere :-)
just what I needed: going to mud 4 ceiling vent patches I put in (using your other video) this morning. I love being able to #DOITRIGHT thanks a ton for putting these videos out there
oh my heck, i have used tons of hot mud, no masking tape, no beater, i just shovel in my clean pan what i think i can get on the wall before it starts to go off. I then start adding water and i use my 6 inch drywall knife to mix the water in, i do clean out the corners to wet all the powder in my pan, if it is still too thick, I add more water, if it is too thin I add more powder. a mask is a must. 5 minute mud is fast and i use very little, 20 minute, i can fill my 14 inch pan and usually get it on the wall, 45 minute is very forgiving, I can mix up an entire bag of 90 minute and get it all on the walls, there I do use an electric mixer. note: the mud left over in the pan can act as a catalyst and cause the next batch to go off early. a clean pan is a happy pan. good luck
I’ve been doing couple bathrooms I don’t meet to mix much and this is a damn good idea I try it last week in this remodeling job I’m doing I jst order one level 5 small mixer but the beater work so good men thank you for the advice
The things we come up with after being in the trades, great idea, I wont use my wife’s beaters, but I bet I can get a few at the thrift store for cheap. Thank you sir!!
Yeah mine came from the thrift store. But, I've used one for food once after a basic cleaning. I've ate soo much mud in my life that a little more isn't a big deal. Thanks for helping me build my channel to 100,000 subscribers and beyond
Thick enough to not drip a lot, but not so thick it works you out too much, but it does require pushing quite hard. I would barely thin a box of mud down, or a bucket. Like maybe 1/8 cup of water to start. Sometimes you don't need any as it can come out plenty thin so just try it straight, then thin it down until it works better, without too much dripping.
