Today, I have a story involving my history with emulation as well as my most recent experiences with it. I've been looking a lot into emulation in the past year so I figured I'd make a video going into a bit of the topic of emulation as well as my personal experience with emulation.

Emulation gave my ps2 collection a new breath of life. Seriously, my earliest memories of retro-gaming started with emulation. When I was about six years old, I visited my cousins at my uncle's hotel. While I was stepping into my uncle's office in this boiler room, my cousin hopped on to my uncle's pc, and told me, Hey? Do, you want to play Super Mario Bros? It literally blew my mind seeing this man; it was crazy! Crap, like, years later, I got back into emulation in early-middle school, but this was when I didn't know about dolphins or Mame. I remember downloading stuff like this random program named Sushi that flooded my pc with Ad-ware; about a few years later, I remember in high school, I saw a couple of kids at the school's library playing Metal Slug, like I haven't seen a metal slug in years, that's when they introduced me to the Mame emulator, and then rest is how you say history-crap, like even at the time, before discovering Mame. I found out that you can emulate GameBoy Games and NES games on your phone!
@jpsfreak

It truly is amazing. I actually did get to emulate a few games on my phone before I got the Steam Deck as it was the closest thing I had to a portable collection of emulators at the time.

@@jpsfreak I plan to buy an extra PCIe port for my Mame emulation, another SSD for my pcsx3 emulation, and another SSD drive to emulate a mac for protocols because why not! Skies the limit on PC, and it's not just for gaming. You can do almost anything with a PC.

Just speaking as an emulation enthusiast ~~and also someone who talks about things like this on occasion shh~~, your content perfectly sums up the whole thing for a layman and I love it. Have a sub. Hope to see more with this kind of quality! Oh, right, emulation; fwiw, I started hearing about it when some classmates were playing VisualBoyAdvance in the computer lab in 3rd/4th grade. The Virtual Console (and Smash Bros. Brawl's timeline) got my interest, and then VBA and Snes9x were the gateway drugs and I never looked back since. In a lot of ways, emulation is essential; but on the other hand, it's depressing how some official re-releases of older games still pale in comparison to fan-made emulators. I'm not even all that picky about it, and remasters are *great* when done right; but if you're going to be charging money for a product, I at least expect it to try and match the original rather than make it look and play worse than it did in the first place. **coughSymphonia** No, I'm not bitter, what are you talking about?

I started really getting into emulation about 2 years ago since I didn't have my consoles on near me at the time and now I just sort of do that more often now than worrying about setting up anything. Not only is it just really convenient to have all your games in one place but it also let's you play things that you probably wouldn't be able to otherwise. Just last year a translation patch for this game called Racing Lagoon came out, a game that never really left Japan and now due to the dedicated work from Hilltop and his team I can play it and actually follow the story without having to look up guides. That's not even going into games that you'd have to pay an arm and a leg for now just to even get a chance at playing without emulation like Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door or pretty much any notable title from the gamecube.

Generally, for those who wish to remain as legal as possible, it's best to emulate games you already own an original copy of. If you make back ups of your own games and play them it's VERY hard to pursue legal action because making a digital back up of your own games is perfectly legal. It's when you start downloading content you don't own that you get into a very sticky area. It's unlikely you will be pursued for playing roms, but VERY likely you will get in trouble for distribution/ sale/ hosting those files for other people.

My thoughts on the _ethical_ standpoint of downloading stuff off the internet: * If the game or console is no longer being made: Consider it abandonware (even if the publisher is still around, the platform isn't) and go nuts. 3DS and WiiU titles officially entered this category as of Mar 27 2023. Remember, the 3DS is actually really easy to mod at this point, all you need is an SD card and an afternoon to kill. * If it's for an actively developed system you can still buy new (Switch, PS5, Xbox Series Whatever): that's actual piracy. Buy it legit if you have the means, and if you don't... eh, you do you. * If the publisher is a piece of shit and doesn't deserve money at all: Yo ho fucking ho. It's _always_ ethical to pirate Adobe products, and thank Miyamoto they're not a games publisher (EA is arguably the Adobe of the games industry, but YMMV).
@jpsfreak
@jpsfreak Год назад
My thoughts exactly. The only thing is I haven't needed an Adobe product for anything and have just been going with alternative programs I can work with that are free.

The Steam Deck really is almost everything I ever wanted in a handheld (it's not pocketable being the one thing). I grew up on and NES and Gameboy and sometime around n64 I learned about pc's and emulators. They were the best thing ever at the time because video games were expensive and the best one's were hard to find. You get the internet and hear about all kinds of games like I had a copy of Final Fantasy 1 but never ever saw a copy of 2 & 3. But emulators made those games and fan translations of the real 2,3, and 5 very assessable. But what got me the most was the GBA and the fact it was powerful enough that people made emulators not of the GBA but FOR the GBA and that blew my mind. All those NES games I grew up with I could finally play on the go. Plus I learned all about the Sega Master System and Game Gear because that was pretty much all the GBA could actually handle. But at that point I started dreaming of having all the Games on the go. I caught glimpses of the idea with the PSP and homebrew and the Switch was nearly there along with weird some of the weird SBC devices like the GPD win. But it was finally the Steam Deck that managed to get there and for a decent price. It even solved the problem of not having a GPU in my computer as I managed to get a deck before the shortage ended thanks to Valve's preorder system.

TBH I don't even think the piracy angle is that complicated if you consider piracy as part of the free market, a genuine competitor and treat it as such. For example, not emulation but am I really going to go through the effort of pirating games that I can easily play via Game Pass for £10 a month without having to jump through hoops? Or even focusing on emulation, if a casual dude wants to play some old SNES games and can find a SNES mini for a decent price, that's preferable to that kind of person than messing with emulators. If official solutions like Nintendo Switch Online or PS Plus offered better solutions then unofficial PC efforts, far more people would buy them. But as it stands unofficial methods like RetroArch offer you a far better emulation experience, even aside from it also being free
@jpsfreak
@jpsfreak Год назад
Precisely. Unofficial methods end up doing better when official methods don't offer as good of an experience.

Depending on the system you're emulating, there are emulators that can bump up the resolution of the game or add unique filters. There is more to list besides that, but if this and other features unique to emulation stand out to you, it might be worth emulating the games in question.

A major question for me when it comes to piracy (obviously it's illegal but legality != morality) is whether the *people* who actually made the game are still getting anything out of you buying it. Like, yeah, the company they worked for still owns the rights, but are you supporting the people who made it or just a corporation getting fat off of IP law?
@jpsfreak
@jpsfreak Год назад
To my knowledge, when a company stops production of a game, the few copies that are left are sold by other consumers that didn't have anything to do with making the game, making it so that the money goes to the consumer selling it rather than the company or developers. That's about as much as I know though. I wish I had more of an answer to this question since this is something that I've questioned as well. I would hope that the people that made the game are getting paid fairly and not having most of the money go to the corporation when a person buys a game that's still being officially sold.
