Thank you so much! I'm surprised too! The euphorbia seem to grow faster than cactus. I have a couple of obesa seedlings and they grow much faster than cactus seedlings for sure. So much fun to grow!

@@cactusjoe Space, the eternal challenge of us cactus lovers LOL. It's funny, I was thinking back on what I did with my Euphorbia last year and I could barely remember, my plant space keeps changing and I can't keep track without looking back at pictures! I believe I put all my obesa and globular Euphorbia in my unheated plastic covered greenhouse last year. The rest I left under the pergola where they were protected by shade cloth but otherwise exposed to the elements. Phoenix gets near or slightly below freezing probably up to a week, but those low temperatures only hang around for up to a few hours right before the sun rises. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do this winter... I have considerably more plants and a ton more seedlings... it's going to be a challenge!
Man I’m so jelly… I’m working so hard to build up my collection. I’m trying to build a greenhouse in the back, but I need hip surgery and honestly need help doing it, nobody has of yet come over to help me lol. Anyways I could get a chair and just sit there drinking some beer or wine and just watch them all day, listening to music or something. Thanks for sharing!

At 5:14 is euphorbia pulvinata. It's relatively rare and also expensive. They grow into huge domes in South Africa where they come from. They don't reach this impressive size in the North for some reason.

Thank you for the comment! There are several differences between Euphorbia and Cactus. I'll list a few I know of but I know there are other differences. Cactus are native to the Americas whereas many Euphorbia originate from other continents, including Africa. Euphorbia contain a white toxic latex whereas cactus do not. You will see that latex "bleed" out of Euphorbia when they are injured. Euphorbia tend to have thorns whereas cactus have spines. Cactus tend to have big showy flowers that don't last very long whereas Euphorbia tend to have small flowers that last much longer and have a different mechanism to attract pollinators (I believe). Please have a look at Google's search results too because I am by no means an expert on this topic and I hope I haven't given any wrong information. Happy planting!

I also like cacti because they meet the aesthetic requirements and also have an edginess that makes them "not your grandma's succulents." There's a surging interest in succulent oddities as well, resulting in windowsill gardens with a vaguely extraterrestrial look. In tackling pollution, cacti is also great at reducing radiation. In addition, cacti absorbs carbon dioxide at night to release oxygen. Putting cacti in the room is helpful in sleeping and supplementing oxygen Its a nice intraction with you. Ahh, maybe that's what's causing the markings! When the marks first started showing up, I thought it might be sunburn, but then marks were appearing even on the sides of the body away from the sun, so that guess was thrown out the window. Thank you for the comment, Alexandra!
Interesting! I think these got the spots during our warm weather. Some folks suggested that the sun probably damaged it, others suggested bugs. It has since grown out of it and the spots haven't showed up again,
The markings on the E. trigona look like sunburn, it was probably not accustomed to intense sunlight. Just my first idea that came up when I saw those markings.
That's a great guess, Gin. I thought the same when I first saw it until I saw the markings show up on the side of the plant away from the sun... Completely mysterious. One of the commenters said that certain insects cause the marks for them. I'm sure we will solve this mystery someday!
Those are some good theories, Christoph! I thought it was sun damage too but even the side away from the sun has the same scab marks. Perhaps the ph then? Another commenter said it could be some kind of insect too. Mystery!
Hi. I just purchased a Euphorbia Obesa, was planted in a way that the brown potato looking part was exposed. I have replanted it the same way. Should that brown part actually be in soil? She has a lot of pups.
I love the term "brown potato part", it's the best way to describe that part of the obesa! It sounds like you're doing the right thing by planting it the same way the obesa was originally planted - I don't think you can go wrong with that. Is it a mature plant? The fact that you have pups on your plant is super cool!

Yes, it can start to feel deflated when it's thirsty. I have an Obesa right now that feels like that but it doesn't seem to be taking up water. I've also had this happen before and then realized that the Obesa had lost all its roots. Is it winter where you're at? I'm not the best at caring for obesas except for the obesas I grew from seed. I'm constantly battling the same thing you're experiencing.

Good question! You know, some of the new growth seems to be more green. I'll have to compare what it looks like now to what it looks like in the video to see if it has changed.
Euphorbia are succulents 😀 They are not cactus. If you have a chance to visit the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, they have a cactus and succulent house with some nice explanations on the difference between the two. When I started in the hobby I had no idea there was a difference and how to tell one from the other.
