Thank you so much for your comments and likes of this video. This is my FIRST EVER VIDEO to EXCEED 1,000 VIEWS in the first day of publishing. I'm not quite sure why. Could it be that you like the bag itself, or perhaps you are surprised I have had this and looked after it since buying it in 1984? It has been a super daily carry for me and marked so many occasions in my life! I wasn't sure whether to record this idea of an EDC as I didn't think it would be that interesting, but I was heading out to write on Monday morning and thought the bag and the way I use this and the notebook might appeal to a few folk. Thank you again for your responses to this share of something so simple as my reliable zipped pouch and the current notebook within it. This is my 155th video and it gives me real encouragement to receive your kind comments and responses to this and other uploads. YT is a steady journey, but one worth making. Not for the views so much as for being able to share what I am drawn to or fascinated by - even if we are talking of an old leather man-bag / wrist bag such as this old treasure! Nick
Great video. Love the little pouch and stories that go with it. For those that are searching for something similar, go to the beginning of the video and take a screenshot when the pouch is lying in the table. Crop it so it's just the pouch and do a Google search with that image (if you've never done this before you can search "how to Google search an image"). This is the only way I've been able to find similar pouches. Good luck!
This video reminded me how sad it is to see leather as a material getting cancelled due to being not environmentally friendly. It's such a perfect material that can last for ages and no artificial alternative works as good.
100% agree. Ive seen reviews of multiple leather substitute products and they are not built to last long term. Is it really more environmentally viable to buy 5-6 "eco" products that have to be thrown away each time over the same time period a leather one will keep going? I doubt it...
Agree. Genuine leather is far more environmentally friendly than any landfill material that's meant to replace it. Not only it lasts a lot longer than leather substitutes, it actually decomposes when you throw it out.
Leather is far more environmentally friendly than this plastic substitutes that are poisoning our planet. No idea who came up with the idea that a natural by product if the food industry is worse than a product made of fossil fuels. Weird world
Gracias Carla. Nuestro hogar esta en Coyoacan. Hay tantas cosas bonitas por aca. Conoces a homohabilis? Tienen sus tiendas de bolsas y pulseras en Roma, San Angel y Coyoacan.
Man, I wish I could find a bad like that little leather one. I recently got a cover for a fieldnotes notebook and it's been super convenient, if a little bulky
Another fantastic video, I don't usually comment but just want to show my appreciation for your content. Cheers from fellow office supply junkie from across the pond 🇮🇪🇬🇧
Thanks @lifeisruffhaveapuff. Great to have you share a comment again. It means so much to me. PS which pond are we talking about? From the flags I'm thinking the Irish Sea. Nick
Shout out to all our fellow OSJ's (Office Supply Junkies). I am tempted now to hide overnight in Office Depot and film everything, like those folk who stash themselves in IKEA stores and film their long night of DIY furniture-heaven! :)
Started taking notes on a small pocket sized books almost daily because in our country before taking the licensure examination for architects we must have at least 2 years of apprenticeship and with that a detailed logbook of our activities. Also because my memory is so bad I had to take down notes and transferred all those notes in the logbook when I applied for our examinations. The habit stuck with me to this day.
Hello Tish. How are you? Thanks for the comment on this one. Yes, it's a gorgeous man-bag as we used to call them. I was so used to the men in our Belgian family and friends carrying similar bags every day, that when I saw this in Mexico it was an obvious purchase for me as a youngster.
Hello Nick. Your content is highly informative, and I appreciate the detailed description of various items particularly pens. I now work mostly from home and I recently tried a kindle scribe for recording my project notes and thoughts that inevitably come to mind. But I returned the device and now stick with pen and paper, as it helps with my long term retention. My favourite writing instrument is the Pentel Kerry pencil with 0.5 mm lead. For long writing sessions I use fountain pens, particularly my sheaffer prelude signature. I've tried using only one fountain pen to curb my addiction to them, but to no avail. My preferred note books are moleskine large 21 x 13 cm. When working at my computer I have a quick notes app for recording those fleeting ideas, which allows me to return quickly to the task at hand and not worry about missing that thought/idea. Just aside, I prefer writing with a pencil, as I often reflect while writing and then experience occasional hard starts with a fountain pen when returning to write. I find the fountain pen a distraction sometimes, as my subconscious knows that it won't always write instantly when I return to the paper unless I replace the cap after each sentence/paragraph. Keep up the great work!
Hello Andy. Thank you so very much for taking the time to respond, but also for your own detail on what you are working with, what you have tried, and about the issue of the Kindle Scribe. I'm a slow adaptor to technology, having a natural tendency to the analog life, but it was interesting to read your comment and then go to watch a couple of K Scribe reviews. I know what you mean about the occasional uncertainty around uncapping and starting to write a line with a fountain pen and not knowing whether the ink flow will be there straight away! I always have some paper or a pad to hand so I can try a test line on that before writing in my journal. I have a Cross pencil from the 1980's, and also enjoy a standard Niceday prop. pencil with 0.4 leads and an eraser in the cap. I don't know if the Niceday is a UK brand or available more further afield. My Dad always used these and Rotring pens for his architectural drawings. Just recently a cousin gifted me a prop. pencil by Sabonis. Not a brand I knew before, but this has a 2.0mm soft lead and I am going to try it for shading in my sketches of buildings. Nick
Thank u for sharing ur EDC, the insights were very interesting. My daily carry for notebooks and writing is a Field Notes-sized (5.5" x 3.5") notebook and then a variety of pens that go in my pockets, mostly of the metal variety. I can't carry a bag or full-sized notebook into my place of employment, so can only take what fits in my pockets. I also keep a bullet journal to help organize me, so the pocket notebook works very well for rapid/daily logs, as well as To Do lists, then my bullet journal serves as the more long term schedule and task list. Some of my favorite pens are: Parker Jotter, Machine Era classic brass pen, Vision Metal Design LP5 (so small and awesome!), Bastion Gear bolt action pen in Ti, Tactile Turn bolt action, Urban Survival Gear Ti Scribe Go and Kawecko Classic Sport rollerball pen in brass.
Evening Darthblade. Your pen collection sounds not only intriguing, but from the names seems to have a tactical vibe. Fascinating that you work in an environment with a no bag policy.
@@nicksturgeonbooks Thank u, they do have tactical-sounding names, haha. Im a fan of machined, metal pens for pocket carry. Yeah, I actually work in a prison, so we are very limited in what we can take inside. Most of it makes sense, but can still be annoying, lol.
I shall have to look up Google Keep to understand what that is. Thanks for the introduction to something nèw. Yes, get yourself a notebook you like the look and feel of and trial notetaking as a different way of jotting down your thougjts and random ideas.
I usually carry a notebook around with me too Nick, to record things that might be of use to me. I wish I had an organiser bag like yours. I might have to find a cheaper version now. 😃
I really enjoyed this video and learning about your process. I have been toying with the idea of using a fountain pen (seems so elegant) but find that I get ink all over my fingers. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I personally enjoy writing with a mechanical pencil.
Good morning Susan. Glad you enjoyed this video. Re the fountain pen idea, just buy one you like and go with it. It can be £10 or £40 while you are trying them out. Buy it because you like the colour or the feel of the pen in your hand. Go for easy interchangeable cartridges and get into the habit of using the pen perhaps once a day. Shopping lists. Diary entries. To do lists. Nick
Thanks David. I don't generally use links and instead mention certain brands in my commentary. The pens are by AT Cross and Faber-Castell. The notebook is from Estrella via OfficeDepot. The watches are my 34mm vintage Seiko 5 from the 1960's and a modern Longines HydroConquest in 43mm.
Evening Rick. No. Was made long ago and sold in a tiny leather goods shop that ceased to exist after the 1985 earthquake. If I can have some made by my local leather worker I will be sure to post an update
@@nicksturgeonbooks Thank you. I never thought of using one of those pouches for every day carry, but it makes practical sense to do so. Look luck in finding something similar.👍
Wow that’s a long time to have a bag like that. I love it. Well made in 🇲🇽 Mexico 😂. I’m going to have to go to my Office Depot here in Chihuahua and look for that Estella notebook. Where in CDMX did you purchase the leather bag? Do they still sell them?
Hola Karina. Los libros / cuadernos llevan el nombre Estrella. Respeto a la bolsa creo que la compro en una tienda pequena cerca de Reforma, quizas en Rio Lerma. Dejame checkar mi agenda de '84.
It’s so versatile and the patina is beautiful I don’t do vegan leather it’s just plastic let’s be honest I give my leather products many years of wear and when I’m done or not using I gift them to my 20yr old daughter or friends it’s outlasting it’s cost if you had to purchase it over and over and the fake material that vegan leather creates those items are definitely not worth the money
Thanks very much @extraordinarybeautifuljour2541 (reminds me of the French word Bonheur). Yes, it's been a great bag and served well in so many situations. I've never really been aware of the vegan alternative products, until seeing several comments about such here. My sons seem to prefer small day bags or rucksacks to a wrist bag, but maybe that's just the trend for youngsters? I still have the great black leather shoulder bag I referenced in an earlier video, and a couple of leather briefcases. Thanks again for taking the time to comment here. Truly appreciated by me. Nick
I think that depends who you ask and where they live. In much of continental Europe such bags are popular and easy to buy in various local generic department stores. Many smaller towns have several shops where getting a bag such as the one I have is relatively easy. In Portugal, Spain and Italy you will see men using such wrist bags as an every day item.
Thanks Martyna. Yes, perhaps this clutch bag was one of my earliest attempts at what nowadays attracts the term "frugal living". Certainly it has served me well and for just 25p a year! :)
