Hey guys,
In this video I do an overview of my experience at OCS. It’s very broad because I could talk about OCS for hours and hours BUT don’t worry, I’ll make more in-depth videos about any topics you guys Wang covered (so please leave me a comment and/or reach out via Instagram or snap). Congratulations on your achievement. I was offered OCS while in boot camp at Paris Island in 79. I foolishly turned it down along with the free college education that came with the program. My Senior DI also failed to tell me that I would get PAID while attending college during the meeting with him. 10 years of obligation seemed like a lifetime to an 18 year old kid.

Thankyou for the information! My youngest son is about to begin his journey. I will definitely send this to him. He is getting placed into the program to be a fighter pilot. He meets with Colonal Thomas (Commander at MCAS) the end of the month. We are so proud!

Nice job young man. I was an 87’ grad. One thing I wish my OSO told me was to knock off the pumping iron. I was 6’ and 210. 18 inch neck, could bench a Buick (well, not quite), but little did I know that my physique was the absolute opposite of what OCS required. It was the ability to move ones body over long distances, over obstacles, doing pull ups, push ups, sit ups, etc, NOT BENCH PRESSING!!! I went in at 210 and when I graduated I was 175! The clothing I wore down there, which I wore home hung on me like drapery . I endured much misery because of this. Lesson learned. To anyone considering OCS, do three things: long distance running, dead hang pull ups and sit ups. I will also say that despite the legally mandated sleep requirements, if I got more than four hours of sleep per night then it was on Liberty. There was a systematic program of sleep and food deprivation. It’s necessary because-surprise-combat conditions don’t allow for sleep and food. Now, there’s plenty of food at the chow hall, but when you get between 5-10 minutes to eat and you’re burning three times the calories you’re taking in, then you’re food deprived. I’m not knocking it, but just prepare for it. The worst thing for me.? I didn’t know that candidates were not allowed to drink coffee, or even caffeinated drinks. I love my morning coffee. Damn that was a killer

I think you will do well in the fleet. Just your attitude and persona resonates like a leader. My daughter is doing the NROTC route and I give her tips on how navigate the military. I tell her if she doesn’t know something, it’s ok to ask the Chief Petty Officer, who has more knowledge and experience, for assistance. Same goes for you. If you go infantry, don’t be shy to ask for help from the platoon Sergeant. Never call a NCO just by their last name. Our platoon Sergeant, respectfully, told our 2Lt that’s Sergeant XXX, I earned it. Watch your military bearing around enlisted. Our SgtMaj chewed out two Capts. for calling each other by their first names in front of the enlisted men. Always remember the SgtMaj is the eyes and ear for the CO.

Thank you for your words of wisdom and service. I have a lot to learn but I'm certainly looking to forward to it. I know that coming in as a 2nd LT I'll be very inexperienced, so I certainly plan to utilize the senior enlisted Marines in my platoon as much as possible. They also have earned their rank, and never will I forget that. My completion of a 4 year degree and 10 weeks at OCS does not compare in any way, shape or form to time-in-service or combat experience for that matter. The respect will ALWAYS be mutual, they've earned at least that much. Semper Fi.

Congrats, I look forward to watching this channel, 51 yo served 4 years active duty infantry 88 to 92 3/6 2 MarDiv and then went to college and did the PLC junior course but just lost my fire and never returned for the senior class. Still working for our VA. I wish you well and good luck…

@@AndrewDankoyour honesty, candor, and perspective will be great and remember that to lead by example and don’t think you are better or smarter than than those below you. I am an RN and a manager most of my team are retired officers. 2 Lt Col, 2 Majors, bunch of former captains, and I was a Sergeant and yet I am the boss. I have two masters degrees and yet my own boss is a lawyer and a Nurse and has two doctorates. Anyone can be a good manager but to lead… a different story. When I left Camp Lejuene in 92 I exited with my Company Commander as I was exiting active duty. He asks me all the standard questions and answers. I did not ask permission to speak freely I told him my Platoon Commander 1st Lt Western was a piece of S. He put his head down took off his glasses rubbed his eyes and told me that he completely agreed with me. He said that he was a ring knocker and would never pass augmentation but since he is a naval academy graduate he doesn’t have to compete. He said this pos will likely have a better chance of getting colonel than I do. He said it was sad but said he will never be respected and his men will always know the difference between the sow and the bull. He was from Missouri what can I say. I laughed my ass all the way off base.

i went the same route...i was a 0341 reservist...i suggest you stay enlisted or consider going the warrant office route...becoming an officer was the biggest mistake i made as a marine.

@@whatchumad4675 i shouldn't say that...it may be the right path for others...for me, i felt like my leadership had failed me when i was enlisted and my intention of becoming an officer was to make the lives of my marines better. what i didn't realize is the best way to impact the lives of enlisted marines, is to gain rank as an enlisted marine. the officer corps is a nasty place and there is more self imposed friction than there is from any other factor you will face. you get so busy dealing with the crap, it's really easy to lose sight of what is important. i got out as a captain, so i didn't really make it that far before my body started failing me and that's just my experience. i'm sure that i was not perfect, and i probably made plenty of missteps along the way. i'm also sure that the grass is always greener on the other side, but if i had to do it again, i would have stayed enlisted, to make an impact that way. s/f

I think a rather large oversight is the difference between OCS and Boot camp in reference to the different levels of screaming, IT’ing, etc. the difference is very noticeable, and creates a rift in the fleet - I.e. officers don’t earn the EGA.

Interesting to hear about OCC as it is run now. I was at the 34th OCC, commencing 7 October 1963. We were at the old barracks on the Potomac past the airfield. Many changes but the core sounds the same. Semper fi.

@@cheeseman7453 Not really, the syllabus stays pretty consistent for the most part. I only know of the syllabus shifting due to COVID (because each class had less time) and due to a new CO (the Commanding Officer can shift the POI as they deem necessary (for the most part). In terms of enemy specific, we definitely talk about near peers and current imminent threats, but the specific training to combat said nations and groups is usually not until you get to TBS and beyond.

Thank you for your service. I agree, I really haven’t seen many marine Officer resources on RU-vid, even though the enlisted marine channels are becoming pretty abundant. I’m ultimately hoping to show the Officer side of things as I get older and out of all the necessary entry level training required to be an officer. I think the Marine Officer side is much less advertised, since it’s such a small community, but it sure as hell doesn’t mean that the need for officers isn’t there!

Rah, Love the video very in depth, I’m a fleet Lance Corporal and I am looking to eventually attend OCS. What would you recommend training wise for OCS? For me, bootcamp was a lot of running an I have heard OCS is very stamina based.

Just relax man, you’ll do fine. Get your last bit of prep in, stretch everyday and get in the right mindset and you’ll b fine. The point of OCS is not to see IF you fail, it’s to see how you react WHEN you fail. If you want it bad enough, you’ll make it thru. Good luck

Thank you for this video! Appreciate the detail and your service. What was the retention rate of women in your PLC? There aren't too many resources with female POV online. Deciding whether or not the program is for me.

Absolutely! Glad to hear the video is helpful and I appreciate the support! As for the female retention rate - the females actually are in their own platoon separate from us. This in mind, from what I heard and saw, the retention rate is about the same as the males. The experience is really no different, the point of the training is equal and same POI (except for the female standards for things like physical events). To give you a rough idea, retention rate fluctuates but my platoon started with around 70 and ended with about 50

That being said, the retention rate isn’t what I’d gauge your interest on. I’d say learn about the marine corps and the opportunities available, decide whether or not those are for you and whether it’s what you want to do, then train for OCS and if you’re determined enough, you’ll get through it. The biggest reason people leave is cause they quit, but if you truly want it bad enough, quitting won’t be an option in your head!

Ive heard a wide variety of things online, and it seems like the actual PFT requirement is very high. Will I be okay if I have a 285-290 PFT, or is it more like you won't get through without a 300?

SSgt, appreciate the time and dedication you and the other Sgt Instructors put into our platoon. We weren’t the biggest or brightest by far, but I believe there will be some guys who prove to be good officers down the road thanks in large part to our staff at OCS…and yes, the show at the end was a fun one, I certainly practiced the act in my head many times throughout the cycle after writing all those essays after lights! Hey just found your channel I was just wondering how did you preserve your muscle in bootcamp? Did you gain alittle extra weight before leaving?

So at OCS you don’t lift so you do lose muscle but it’s only 10 weeks (or for boot camp 13) so unfortunately you’ll lose some muscle mass but it shouldn’t be too bad to get it back on. To b honest, it’s better to go there with less mass, you’ll learn quickly that the most in shape guys there are not the jacked dudes with extra/incessantly muscle. Once you finish then you can go back to lifting weights and getting big so you can “look the part” when you’ve earned the title!

I should have left it with the platoon - they say the rifle never leaves the platoon so even if all candidates are not with the platoon, the rifles should all ALWAYS stay together.

Thanks for reaching out! So Officer Candidate school is essentially Officer boot camp, there are academics involved however it’s not the same as a university per se in that you wear a uniform, get yelled at, run/physically exert yourself constantly, and are monitored 24/7 by instructors who tell you where and how to do things. Look up some boot camp videos and you’ll get a more firm understanding, but to answer your question, OCS is not comparable to school/college in terms of the POI

I was a PLC-Combined student so I'm actually completing my senior year of school now but a number of the candidates in my Platoon got commissioned at the end. They shipped right off to TBS after they graduated (another 6 months of training). Most of them checked in to TBS the very same day (don't worry though, they all had ample time to see their family and hang out after completing 10 weeks of OCS with minimal communication to home!).

They should add after ocs butter bar camp. Funny yall get lost in land nav. Come to a unit that's deployed and then be all Gung ho like calm down you just got here. Power hunger salute me I'm a butter bar. Like sorry thought the sun was on collar it was blinding me. Or use rank on higher enlisted and get chewed out but wanna use rank over time in service. You guys will learn Semper Fi.

Sorry to hear that the officers you’ve dealt with haven’t been good leaders (that’s what it sounds like). I’ve heard a lot of stories about bad officers in the past, and I hate to see it, especially because, like you said, most of the enlisted guys have far more experience than the officers do. It’s our job to use the skills and treat you all with the respect you deserve. Hoping I can work on not being “that type” of Officer. Would love to hear more about your experience with officers in the corps if you ever wanted to come on my channel. Let me know and we could definitely make that happen. Officers go through ~6 months of basic officer training after OCS called The Basic School.

I was prior enlisted, E4, 0311, fire team leader. Went to OCS in 86, it’s a joke compared to boot camp. I dropped after 8 weeks, didn’t feel like I was earning the title that I had already earned in boot camp. I would say half of any platoon would not make it through boot camp. Your a 2nd Lt in the Marine Corps, but you are not even qualified with a rifle, that’s right you qualify at TBS, but your full fledged marine even though you haven’t qualified with a rifle. Yep you get liberty and almost zero hazing. The leadership courses make you think enlisted are just idiots and you are babysitters. If you haven’t been to both then don’t say OCS is tougher, it isn’t, even if you at some point go to boot camp as a series commander or what not that’s not the same. I believe they just need to make everyone go through boot camp, then establish some standard to continue to TBS where once you graduate from there you are then an officer in the Marines. I just couldn’t see working with the majority of people I was with and they would also,make up my social ]network. There were some squared away guys, but not the majority. Good luck to you in your future, please listen to your NCOs.

What is the difference for the 10 week and 6 week does a college graduate applying get to chose?

So the 6 week guys do 2 increments (so they go to OCS for two summers, 6 weeks each). If you do that, it’s just the 10 week course split into 2 increments. As for choosing, no you don’t get to choose. It depends on when you apply and get selected, so if you apply your freshman or sophomore year and get selected, you have at least 2 summer left before graduating, therefore you go to the 6-week program twice. If you don’t get selected until you’re a junior, you only have 1 summer before graduating, this you do 1 10-week course to ensure you’re done w OCS before graduating so you can commission right after you graduate

I never took the ASVAB so I don't believe its required, that being said my SAT/ACT score may have replaced it. Based on a quick google search I just did, it appears (if you didn't take the SAT/ACT) I believe you have to have a GT score of 110, but again, that's just from a google search. Hope that provides some clarity!

You should have it trimmed up neatly (don’t come with crazy long hair, that looks sloppy and unprofessional) and obviously shave - but I wouldn’t buzz it all off before going. They buzz it off (buzz cut) there to signal a fresh start, so I wouldn’t be “that guy” who comes with it buzzed early.

If you do 6 weeks w/ PLC you’ll go there twice so it’ll actually b 12 weeks total - which basically just means the overall purpose/instruction plan of the program is spread out more. At the end of the day, you all learn the same things it’s just the timeframe in which you learn them that may shift depending on your program

You’ll be on a rotation, so there is fire watch every night but you’ll likely do it once every three days or if you have a smaller platoon you’ll do it every other day

I hear where you’re coming from, but my goal with this channel is not fame, money or anything in between. Ultimately I want to share all the knowledge and information I’ve gotten thus far, it’s not embarrassing to me and if they look at the content, I’m sure they’ll come to the same conclusion. If not, oh well, it’s always an uphill battle to earn respect, and that’s exactly what you have to do, earn their respect. If this makes that uphill battle steeper, then hell, so be it.

I haven’t graduated school yet, I went to OCS last summer and from there will wait until TBS to request my desired MOS choices. As of now I’m primarily interested in becoming a Financial Management Officer.
