Honestly Jacob, I get the impression from you that your diagnosis is a hindrance. All I know is that you’ve successfully made it to 41, you found a lovely woman in your life, and she is moving with you! How amazing is that! So what about fixations, I have them too, like binge watching your videos! Just keep up what you’re doing, and remember, you got this! 😊

It’s so refreshing to see someone talk so openly about their experience being autistic! I am also autistic and was diagnosed as an adult. Seeing your video inspires me to be more open about my experience, so thanks for sharing.

Fellow Aspie here! You hit the nail on the head with your goggles analogy. I was so confused about why so many things were very difficult for me, but came easily for everyone else. As soon as my therapist handed me those “goggles”, so many things made so much sense!! It was like the diagnoses was a decoder and maneuvering socially became more manageable. I learned all about boundaries, limits, and how to recognize the signs that I was becoming overwhelmed. I found out that when you stop fighting it and embrace it, you will discover all your hidden superpowers and gifts. I think you’re discovering those now for yourself. 😊 Awesome video! Keep following those passions!

Honestly Jacob, I never would have known if you didn’t mention it. You are a cool, interesting and talented individual who has brought a lot of people happiness with your adventures. I give you mad respect for putting a very private thing out there. In my life, I have learned that no one is immune to some form of mental condition. Depression, anxiety, autism, etc. are amongst the many types of mental hurdles we all face. To me, true mental disorders are the ones that hurt others. I.E. Sociopathy, Psychopathy, Malignant Narcissism and any other antisocial personality disorder. You’ve embraced who you are and not only have forged a career that many others dream of, but you make people happy. Just know that your viewers are all proud of you, we admire your creativity/talent and just know you won. Happy Thanksgiving brother and keep up the amazing work 🦃 🚗💨🗺️

I was diagnosed ADD in my mid adult years. Like your diagnosis, it made a lot of my chronic difficulties with school and work understandable for the first time. Medication helped some, but never made me “normal” by social standards. I still struggle with issues of self esteem, and the feeling of never being “good enough”. I found my life passion as a librarian. I admire you focusing your passions on making videos that allow me to indulge my own taste for odd things and places. You found a way to use your strengths rather than bemoan your weaknesses, and I love watching the things you film. Thank you for your honest openness

I don't have autism , but I have anxiety attacks and depression , I struggle being around crowds so while listening to your video ,it was refreshing , it truly was inspirational to me. I had to struggle with it alone , my dad was ashamed of it in the 70s and 80s, wouldn't send me to a psychiatrist. I didn't even realize what I had until the internet in the 90s. God what a relief!!

Jacob, you are so honest, and I appreciate that. I do not have autism, I have been dealing with depression for most of my life, I drank through it for 10 years (after my dad killed himself). Once I got sober in AA, an old-timer told me that now I was going to have feelings which meant I had to face life on life terms. Not an easy task and I am still working on it after 32 years of sobriety. After watching so many of your videos, I think of you as a friend. You are so real, and I look forward to your videos. I think many of your viewers think of you as a friend too!

I also found out I am autistic as an adult. I was struggling at my call center job, until it got to a breaking point and I quit with no notice. I had a complete mental breakdown, without knowing what was wrong with me. I found out about autism, and then everything clicked. No wonder I was having so much trouble on the phones... social interaction takes so much more energy for me than a neurotypical person! I looked back on my life, and was blown away by how much my autism really affected me. It takes a long time to accept. There is so much grief and sadness that comes up when you re-contextualize your entire life. If only I hadn't been missed as a child, I could have had more support, I could have understood my behaviors instead of thinking I was just a failure of a person. Once you go through this pain though, life does get easier. Now I am able to accommodate myself, like for example wearing noise cancelling headphones to avoid sensory overload. Now I am able to accept myself more and actually love myself for who I am. So thank you for sharing your story Jacob, it takes a lot of bravery to reveal this personal side of yourself. Please know you are not alone, and many autistic people like me appreciate you making videos about this. I would love if you talked about it more, maybe while on the road, as I am curious to know how being autistic affects you while travelling. Travelling for me can be a mixed bag, because I love to experience new places, but also I get easily overwhelmed being outside and in crowds. I feel much more comfortable at home where I can be myself without feeling judged. Thank you for taking us to places I would have a hard time going to, and stay awesome

I'm 29 and was only formally diagnosed with severe Inattentive-ADHD about a year ago. The diagnosis changed my life; not only in that I was finally receiving some treatment, but also so much of my childhood, teenage years, and young adult life made sense suddenly. Your ability to perfectly capture the inner conflict of both relief and hindrance with a neurodivergent diagnosis within this video is spot on. I've been a fan of your videos for a long time and I've gotta say, much love for you Jacob. Thanks for all that you do!

You’re not alone, Jacob. I was diagnosed at the age of nine and it’s been a challenge ever since. Even so, it doesn’t define who I am or what I’m capable of doing in life. I graduated from high school with all A’s, I can drive, I have a full-time job, and I aspire to one day become a dental hygienist. I just need more clarification on a lot of things and I don’t like loud noises or strong tastes and smells, but I can adapt as best I can. Please, don’t let this diagnosis change you or your passion for travel.

Here’s a filming idea for you, “ride along talk”. You set your camera on your dashboard and face it towards the road and you just talk about your acceptance of ASD, or your favorite haunt and experience, or even what your travel plans are. If you don’t feel like full episodes, you could cut them down for shorts!

I very much understand and appreciate this, I appreciate that it has made me who I am, just struggling with some of the limitations I have
@ronnihall444
@ronnihall444 10 месяцев назад
The ‘limitations’ we have only make room for the special powers we have that NTs don’t have. Without those, we wouldn’t have electricity or computers or much of the Industrial Revolution… the world needs us. We were specifically sent here to be different and not less than. The deficit model of diagnosis is the problem. We aren’t a developmentally less model, we merely have a different operating system. One that is specialized and needed. I’m grateful you are speaking about this. I am also two years out from diagnosis (I’m 51). It’s a relief to know that I’m not always the problem. Much of our ‘disability’ is due to our society and not us. In many countries we wouldn’t struggle like we do in western cultures.

Jacob, I just found your channel recently and love it. Thank you for discussing your diagnosis. I worked as administrative assistant for a psychiatrist, psychologist and for therapists for 25 years. A couple of our therapists specialized in working with autistic children. It was wonderful to see the kids blossom and gain confidence. I have a anxiety disorder and once in a great while have panic attacks. I don't have hardly any panic attacks now, but I still have bad anxiety. I used to have bad depression but it's not an issue. So, back to your videos. I love them because I love roadside stuff. I think you are articulate and knowledgeable about your content. I love how you share your enthusiasm with us. It's an escape from the daily bad news. I am thinking that people that are on the spectrum will find hope by watching you. It will be educational and helpful for many people.

Thank you for being open and honest. I’m a parent of a child on the severe end of the spectrum. Any discussion and awareness is good - it’s such a wide spectrum. When people ask you to describe it - I am reminded of my experience being colorblind and when people ask what it’s like - there is no way to answer it because you don’t know anything else - you don’t know the “typical” experience to know any different - so it’s good to answer questions but only so much can be explained. When people ask me about my son’s autism, I just say that his brain processes things differently, and leave it at that usually. Thanks for everything you do and hope to meet you in person one day.

I was a social worker for about 25 years, a good amount of time with those having developmental and similar struggles. When you were a child the term autism was used only for those with severe symptoms. Just in the past 10-15 years it has been seen that there is a real spectrum with these features, hence the great amount of diagnoses. We are just thankful for you...the only "label" you need is the Carpetbagger! Ha ha. Have a great Thanksgiving with your family. You are doing fantastic, keep up the good work.

In 2014 I had a stroke at 34 and had to learn to walk, eat, and talk again even I struggle to this day with writing. It was so bad they told my husband to get a funeral home ready. Then in 2021 I thought I was having another stroke they diagnosed me with MS which totally took my ability to walk. I watch your videos to see how handicap accessible places are, then a year ago they put a stent in my brain to allow my spinal fluid to drain from my brain and stop squishing it and causing a pseudo tumor. But I also watch it for you! You are very entertaining and my husband watches you to see where we can explore!

I am on the autism spectrum too Jacob, I was diagnosed at 2 years old when my parents discovered that I wasn’t talking, so they took me to the doctor and the doctor said that I was on the autism spectrum. Throughout my life with autism I have struggled with communication/social interaction and loud noises like fire alarms and sirens on emergency vehicles. I am now 22 years old and still struggle with those things. Life with autism can be a struggle for a lot of people.

I am a parent of 2 autistic children. My older child is mild, my younger one is moderate. We knew something was different with my son quite young after not meeting milestones like our daughter. With my daughter she didn't get diagnosed untill after we had learned more on the subject because of my son. A great book is How Can I Talk if my Lips Don't Move. These 2 kids are so different. My daughter is more socially awkward than my son. But my son has a lot more disabilities. My daughter once you showed her how to do something she had it but she had to be taught simple things that my boy would figure out on his own. The one thing that tipped our drs off about the autism was the lack of eye contact.

Welcome to the club! I was also born in 1980, and wasn’t diagnosed until a couple years ago. And as a woman is even more difficult. Because Asperger women have different symptoms or traits I should say not symptoms.. but they always diagnosed me with OCD and ADHD. But I was kind of felt like they were off. And then two of my kids got diagnosed and I thought maybe something is going on there. And be honest with you it was so liberating when I got diagnosed, because finally, I understood why I felt like I did my entire life. Even though I was super social as a child. I still had problems maintaining long-term relationships. I had a lot of friends, but I just never felt connected to them. Now, with so many people on the spectrum, I find myself I gravitate towards those people. Because they’re always the coolest. And usually the smartest. 😂 It’s ironic. You said that about your handwriting, because my son that was diagnosed, he’s an adult now. But I remember when he was going to get his license he practiced all night the night before his signature. Because he has unfortunately always had bad handwriting. And It’s crazy why that’s an issue. He also didn’t learn to tie his shoes until He was 16. You know sometimes you choose your battles as a mom 😂 but he was valedictorian of his graduating class. And he’s super social. He was also student government president. But his hand coordination just wasn’t the best. And I’m sorry that you’re struggling with things, being autistic to me is amazing. I would hate to be normal. Sometimes I think we’re the normal ones. Have you ever talk to a normal person? 😂 by the way, meditation, and a good chakra balancing might help with some of that unresolved energy. Because after jarring news like that, sometimes your chakras can become blocked. And it’s hard to process emotion.

Thank you for making this video ❤️. My son is 18 and still in high school. As a child we found out I had ADHD and Aspergers high functioning. Thank you for telling me about the new term they use. Also, thank you for bringing attention to handwriting. I never connected that with a Aspergers. My son has a really hard time making friends.. he doesn’t make eye contact, he only talks about his video games. He takes everything literal. He’s very disorganized and struggles with depression. Those are just some of the symptoms he has. But on the other side, he’s very very very smart. Your videos give me Hope for his future. Besides video gaming he loves to cooking. Who knows maybe one day he’ll started cooking show. Thanks again for the info.

Jacob, you inspire me to no end. As an autistic person with a passion for the unorthodox aspects of Americana, I’ve always felt very at home watching your videos; I’ve learned so much from you! You have a great personality and truly embody the quest for knowledge and experience that comes with hyperfixations. It’s a beautiful thing to see them represented realistically and constructively, rather than in media, which is quick to portray hyperfixations as irrational obsessions. Kudos to you for that and much more.

Jacob, wonderful video. I approached you at the Life Day lightsaber event at Galaxys Edge in Walt Disney World. I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome many years ago, back when that diagnosis was used. I think you are doing a great job in speaking about your experience being on the autism spectrum. It's important to let those on the spectrum know they are not alone, and educate people who are neurological about it. And believe me, your autism is a trait many would consider interesting and unique about you, not a bad thing. God bless, my friend, and keep on doing what you're doing.

Hmmm... a few years ago I had a stroke. Afterwards I went to get evaluated to see if I had lost any mental acuity. After evaluating my exam the dr took a look at me with a confused face. She looked back at the scores then looked at me and then went back and forth a few time between me and my test results with her face looking more and more confused. Eventually she stopped and aske the question. "Have you ever been diagnosed with ADHD?" She was relieved when I told her yes, I have been diagnosed this with 3 Doctors. I'm a mathematician. If you work with me, you are on the spectrum. In my circle, it's not considered a disability, it's practically a requirement.

I do appreciate your being open about this, as so many do deal with the challenges of autism. My son has high functioning autism, and also severe ADHD which impaired him all of his school life. What has helped him immensely is his job teaching and helping adults with disabilities more severe than his. He has learned life skills he never had the patience to learn before. Hang in there- it's a tough road. But you are so intelligent and intellectual; one of the reasons I love your videos that are so detailed in noticing things that most of us would completely overlook! Thank you.

I have been a loner for a long time now, but during my childhood I did have normal relationships with other kids. I’ve never been diagnosed psychologically, but I feel sometimes that I could possibly have some degree of autism. But it could be an anxiety disorder. Anyway, I admire you for being candid about your diagnosis. It’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of! In fact, it demonstrates intelligence and courage! You have your personality to compensate for all of it anyway, so WHO CARES!!!

I didn't realize that Asperger's was not currently used as a term for high function autism. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with Asperger's.... It's definitely hasn't caused him any issues in his career. He is a particle physicist and on faculty at a prominent university. He regularly works at the CERN supercollider in europe. I would say that I agree with what you said.... I think his autism has actually helped him in his career as far as focus. Being an aerospace engineer, now retired, I worked with a number of people who were diagnosed as autistic. Or with asperger's. For the most part, they've been very brilliant people, and I think very funny and personable. You just have to take a little time to get to know them, and create an environment where your friends feel accepted, and comfortable to be themselves.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago at 33, same, Aspergers. I think the most valuable thing is creating connections with people with similar struggles, as opposed to actually being diagnosed. It just helps explain a lot of things and now you understand why certain things are "harder", BUT that doesn’t mean they change. So, honestly, understanding, learning boundaries, learning new terms, etc. is just a part of it, but the biggest part is looking for these connections that make it easier to navigate and just, being part of a community that will be more accepting because we understand how complex and not neurodivergent friendly the world really is. BTW, welcome to the spectrum!

First of all Jacob your videos make me happy. I get excited with each new upload, you take your viewers on some really cool and offbeat adventures! It reminds me of this line from Wonderland by Taylor Swift, We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it. And life was never worse but never better. I’m 29, and got diagnosed around 12 or 13. I had never even heard of the word autism before. I don’t want to be a victim, but I don’t think a lot of people realize the extreme challenges and difficulty of it. I wouldn’t even know the first thing about dating so even though I don’t know you personally, good job with your relationship with Jenn. People offline would never know because I’ve learned to mask and practice social skills, but it leaves me feeling physically exhausted. Thank you for sharing and helping others

Thank you Jacob for your vlogs. I am also on the spectrum and wasn’t diagnosed until I was 40. I had exactly the same problems as you growing up and was always considered a weird and odd child. I still struggle with my handwriting to this day, and sometimes I can't even read my own but I always put it down so that my brain works quicker than my hands does. 😆 Living with Autism is like your brain is always in fast forward. I’m so thankful for you, your videos have gotten me through some very dark moments in my life. Never stop being who you are! I think that you are fantastic! Lots of love to you and Jenn! ❤

Hi Jacob, i am AuDHD (Autism and ADHD). I was only diagnosed Autistic a couple years ago at 22 but id been self diagnosed for years before but for a long time, id felt the same as you said, like everyone else had a rule book or something on how to be and how to talk with each other and i didn't. It was hard to make friends, there were points where i had none, which made me "a pleasure to have in class" since i didnt talk to anyone but later I "didnt pay attention" in class when the word questions or other things my teacher wouldnt explain to me a second time happened. I also had, and still have, messy hand writing. One teacher kept marking me down, i had a bad grade in his class soley because i couldnt write my "U"s like he wanted, so he had me write them over and over and over and over until it changed and today i write them how i used to out of spite. I was also bullied all through school, including by the teachers, for being "weird" and also visibly queer but in highschool i was able to make friends with the LGBT group, the alternative kids, the nerds, etc. Now, i have only a couple close friends who are all neurodivergent, ive found its a lot easier to be friends with people who have a similar brain to you. A lot of content creators i really enjoy end up being neurodivergent as well, im happy youve made this video. Ive been subscribed and watching you for a very long time, since i was a teenager, and the things you cover are 1 of the 2 of my biggest special interests. The things you make videos about are my first special interest (rides, attractions, haunted houses, oddities, etc.) Your videos have been a great resource of joy for me. Many of the places ive gone or really want to go to are because you have showed me them. Also i wanted to say they i relate to how a lot of stuff started making sense after you figured out youre autistic. As a kid i did not understand why i was so different, why people were so mean to me, why i struggled so much when other people didnt and after i learned it just made so much sense. And it felt so good to know that there were other people like me and i wasnt the only one.

So Thankyou for this, it explains a lot with regards me and my fixations. I too never had friends at school as I was the weird girl who loved star wars and horror. And at 54 I'm still the same. So don't stop please. 💜

I was diagnosed with autism, more likely with Asperger’s at age 11. I was a quiet kid slowly processing and having high functioning anxiety, and still do to this day. It was pretty difficult through the years until my mom said it’s okay if u feel different than everyone else, just embrace who you are, what you like ‘appropriately’ and not pretend who you’re not. Feeling much better my family and friends have and always been supporting me and my struggles 🙏🏽

I have my struggles too on the spectrum as well. What you have mentioned is very similar to what I deal with. My biggest challenge I would say is my anxiety. This has made my day. I feel less alone in a weird way now as you also got diagnosed at 41 like I did after going under the radar all that time. It is a lot to process and it is odd knowing what makes us our unique selves is also what makes us too different for some folks. Never knew about the writing thing but I have always been like that too. Everything you have said is so akin to my experience so far and just... Thank You for your you-ness!!!
