I dated a guy with a severe stutter and I literally never thought twice about it. I learned to be more patient and because he had dealt with it his whole life, he was really patient with me learning his language. He brought it up on our first date and other than “bad stutter days” or something, we didn’t bring it up that much (except to sometimes laugh about it, like you said.) so so glad you were able to experience a relationship like that :)

I'm a 26 year old person who stutters. When I go to a date I usually stutter quite a bit, but phone calls and speaking in groups of people make me nervous and I stutter more. 😣💕🌺

I am Hearing speech and language sciences graduate and I absolutely love your videos, way to go! Your other videos are very helpful and I enjoyed this one as well. I work with so many people from all around the world that often may have stuttering and are learning English so I am a lot more in tuned thanks to your channel :)

My boyfriends stutters but he is so loving attention, supportive and smart. So I learned to be patient and I barely even notice it now.

mostly because of my stuttering I have NEVER dated anyone (I'm woman 36 years old) I have other problems too like avoidant personality disorder, PTSD and severe social phobia and of course they have also affected me and my relationships but my stuttering is what I am ashamed of the most. I don't care at all if someone else stutters (my father stuttered as a child and two of my sisters also have stuttered) but probably because I was severely bullied in school because of my speech problem I still feel extremely ashamed if I stutter when speaking to someone ☹️

This is an area that I feel I have had some trouble with due to my stutter (at least that is what I have told myself in the past). I'm trying to be be more brave now. Thanks for sharing Courtland. All the best!

Hi!! I stutter too, and regarding dating, my experience has been similar but I have a slightly different approach. Now I never try to hide my stutter or avoid stuttering (I used to do it, I believe that as all the people who stutter :(...), and I present myself as I am, but I do not tend to speak openly about stuttering at first, unless I am asked regarding that, But if the relationship progresses, being my girlfriend, yes I have spoken openly about it. I believe that as you said, most of people really do not mind stuttering, maybe they will look confused or they will mock you because they do not understand what is happening with you. In resume, I believe that most people would not discriminate a person who stutters just for that. However, in this world there are people of all kinds, and I believe that is posible that a person decides not to have a relationship and discriminate a person who stutters, only for that. But for all people who stutters, you should not try to hide or avoid stuttering. Do not feel shame or guilt for something you are not responsible for. You are very good looking young man!! Waiting for new videos!!

Great comment!! I like that a lot. Stuttering is unique to every PWS and whether they choose to disclose it early on or wait until being asked about it is great! I've actually had experiences with both, and both yielded positive results in the end in most cases. You make a good point as well, there certainly are people who discriminate against stuttering, and I'm sure I may have gone on dates with people who feel that way. What I found to be so important is to not let the thought of people thinking that way affect every interaction and date I go on. There are so many kind-hearted and genuine people out there who wouldn't even think twice if they go on a date with someone who stutters, and those are definitely great people to have in our lives!

Thank you so much for your insights, I'm a senior in high school who stutters and forming relationships is always hard. Not because of my stutter but because of the anxiety that comes with it. Realizing that I don't hate my stutter, I just need to work on how I see it, absolutely was fueled by watching and listening to the positivity and wonderful advice you give. Thank you for being so vulnerable and honest, it truly helps me feel less alone.

I'm extremely happy to hear that!! I applaud you for taking the time and having the motivation for find positivity with stuttering, that's something I wish I did in high school but ultimately ended up taking a few years after. Keep it up! You're going to do amazing things :)

I'm very shy and introvert when it comes to relationships and social life. I stutter and I've never accepted this side of me and when I end up dating I feel awkward and not free to speak whenever I want.

Thanks for being so vulnerable Courtland. I tell clients who struggle with this to just own it. Stop trying to hide your flaws that you can immediately change (while obviously trying to improve on it overall). If you accept yourself, it's infinitely more likely someone else will and see it as not a big deal.
@stutteringslp
@stutteringslp 3 года назад
Exactly! That's really great advice. The best people to let into your life are the ones who accept you for who you are and cherish you, "flaws" and all.

Women don’t want a stutterer. I just got turned down after mentioning it to someone I was texting for a few days. If you stutter you’re not a person basically

I can understand why you may feel that way, I experienced similar thoughts for a while when I was younger. I've found plenty of people who find a lot of interest in my stuttering and think that it's a unique thing. Sometimes it just takes finding the right people. We may get into our heads sometimes with those kinds of thoughts, but once we start meeting more and more people and allow ourselves to truly connect with others, it's amazing the potential out there for meeting someone special.

@@stutteringslp I couldn't have said it better myself Courtland! Great job and I enjoy your videos as an occasional stutterer myself. I agree that our stuttering is unique to us, and we all much deeper than just the stutter itself. I used to believe the lie if I was rejected by a girl on a date, it was because of my stuttering and I used to feel really depressed about it. Now I'm like, "That's her loss" . That's the mental approach that I take if I get ghosted or rejected on a date or in a dating app. Just be yourself, embrace it and have confidence in who you are. The women will be attracted by your character, your heart and your personality. Thanks for encouraging people to embrace themselves! Great work!
