Comparing to my 2021 Tesla model3, I'm very surprised that VW seems to be so far behind when it comes to software. In 2022, I had about 12 releases downloaded and installed automatically during the night, with no issues. Some early bugs were solved and the car now is a lot better than when it was new, 2 years ago. Having a great software development team is more and more important to have for an automaker today, and will be a key differentiator tomorrow.
I have a Cupra Born (on 3.1) - as an IT professional (retired), the update process looks horrendous (did you miss out the step where you lit a candle and had to walk round the car 7 times ? 😂) !!! I hope updates 3.1 -> 3.2 -> 3.3, etc. are a lot simpler, otherwise my next car is not going to be VAG - this looks very bad ☹️. Hope you had an excellent Christmas, by the way 🎅.
A base Tesla Model 3 is currently £13,000 more than than what I paid for my Cupra Born (that's 1/3 more) !!! I like the design of the Born, it's very well built, a hatchback, is quick, comfortable, drives well, and has most of the modern toys (including headup display - not available on a Tesla !) 😂 The current issue is that legacy auto makers make extremely good cars, but good tech not so much. Tesla makes extremely good tech, but struggles with the good car bit 😂. And, I'll believe a $25k Tesla when I see it 😂.
I'm based in the UK - base Model 3 with 19" wheels and metallic red paint is £52k, my Born V3 with panoramic roof and metallic red paint was £39k. The Born is a hatchback (more practical), and I appreciate the fact it is more compact 😁. Horses for courses, as they say 😂.
@@louishiggins8881 I agree that the Model 3 RWD is too expensive in the UK. I don't agree with the Tesla good tech, bad cars bit. The 2022 Model 3 is the best car I've ever driven and I test drove a lot. Build quality excellent, driving, handling great and very comfortable. Quick enough. Why do you say they make bad cars? Did you test drive one and have a bad experience? Or are you basing that on old reports of Tesla's build quality?
...wow...2nd OTA update in how long...????!!!!! I got my 2023 Tesla Model Y in late November 2022, and I've had *three* OTA updates already....! and not a single issue with any of them. VW *really* need to get their game together, as this looks like a nightmare.
Seems a complex process of updating the software on the car. VW has a lot to do to ease user experience. Very few normal users/drivers would be able to do what you're doing Chris.
Quite a complex process but an informative video, thanks for posting. It will be interesting to see if you start to experience the "new user settings" issue that has plagued our Born along with many others and I also see that some ID.3 owners have seen this since the 3.0 update. If you do happen to see it, I had a hotfix applied a couple of weeks ago which seems to have squished the bug.
Looks like a big hassle. I hope this updating gets better. In my VW the software sucks big time. This kind of crap is making me look at other cars/companies.
Hi Chris. Did you see interior spy shots of the VW Aero.B (ID.7?). It's getting different UI and bigger screen. Climate controls will always be on the display. The same with heated seats and steering wheel. I wonder if ID.4 and ID.3 facelift will get it too.
Hi Chris. You initially mentioned that your navigation version 22.11 hadn't been updated for ages. Well then I have news for you. My navigation version that I have been driving for at least 6 months is version 22.5!! 😞 What did I do wrong? I also had this navigation annoyance last year and was eventually resolved with the We Connect Support department. Then this soap opera started again. Good luck, and a happy New Year plus safe kilometers with Walter. 🍀
congratulations. Thanks for posting the process. Still waiting for the first update and the replacement battery here in the US. I've already received the second email stating that it's on its way but have no idea how long that's going to be.
I'm still waiting for 3.0. Tried your tip just now to no avail. Will try again. Does it require more than 1 4G-bar? We seem to have particularly bad reception where we live. I just have to drive 100m to get 3-5 bars. Does it need to park there for long to download it? Or is it enough to just do the procedure you showed here at a good place?
The tip is not for downloading the update! If your car has downloaded the update you get a message. But sometimes when you stop the car the Update now button does not show. the tip is for that.
Did you get anything to notify you that an update was ready. I tried the process Chris did but I got nothing to say it was ready. I only had 13 flashing white lights so note sure if thats something
@@o00scorpion00o so I assume you also dont have the update? I did reach out to VW and twice got the exact same standard reply. "We have no time line for updates" very disapoiting. I have the car a year and it has some issues which I am told are resolved with 3.0 but yet cant get it :(
@@ryansweeney15 No I don't have 3.0, only got 2.4 and the new 12v battery around 2 months ago, I have the tour 5, I'm not expecting to get 3.0 until at least the end of Summer 2023. VW updates are very slow. We should be able to check for updates via the infotainment rather than having to wait for them to be pushed out. We should even be able to update from our phones. But I'd say we're a couple of years away from anything like this.
I collected my id buzz on Friday with software 3.1. It updated to 3.2 OTA after I drove it home, took about 10 mins, no dramas, all very slick. I think VW have things sorted on their newer vehicles but have a lot of work to do to get their older id fleet up to date…
My Id4 is in the dealer for already one week. Sofware 2.4 update crashed. Solution is not found yet. Advantage: now driving a T-roc. You then realise how great an ID4 Drives. Disadvantage or loaning a T-roc: discovering that heating controls and volume do exist in lighted version when driving at night. Handy! Other discovery: Android auto exist in a faster version. :)
It didnt work on my car, the ID light flashed 14 times, on and off on the start button, but no uppdate on the god bye screen?👎 I have 2.4... any tips for me? 🧑🎄
Well I've had the 2.4 update and the id line flashes 14 times but I don't see the update on the powerdown screen.... maybe not enough power in the battery?
Will be able to let you know how the Skoda equivalent version feels....just been told my ENYAQ is in transit to the dealer :D at long last after 15 months!
It is ridiculous that the update is so complicated. Having said that , we don’t even have 2.4 in Ireland because there are no 12v batteries available . I love my ID 3 but VW service is terrible. The screen and tech in Tesla vehicles is much better and given the VW service in Ireland or lack off, I will have to go elsewhere for my next EV.
Hi This sounds an incredibly long and messy way of updating to get to the same level of information on the app that BMW had at least 5 years ago. Maybe that’s why VW got Dirk Hillgenberg to move to them. At least they are starting to catch up with the competition. Many thanks for your great RU-vid videos and Happy New Year
I just tried this on my Tour 5 and it doesn't work, I get the flashing light, press start, stop and no update. It will probably arrive in December 2023 lol.
@@BatteryLife Thanks for the tip, haha, I would have been waiting a long time. 🙂 If your 1st is only getting the update now I expect the T5 not to get it until the middle or end of 2023.
VW should seriously enable updates over WiFi because my 4g Signal is crap and I can't risk doing this in work in case something happens and I can't start it again.
Incredible ! I was waiting for the update for months, since the current software version is horrendous (slow & bugged), and I hesitate to do it now for my Id3 pro S Is the new version much better ? this will maybe justify to do it. I also own a tesla model 3 (more than 3 years old), only takes 30 mn for updates even major ones, I never had any issue. I would not say the id3 update process is complex, it's just unacceptable ! Thanks for your video
hi. i always watch your channel. my first edition was finally updated with new battery and software 2.4 last week! now i wait for 3.0 ota. I am in the UK. If i get it for my birthday by March i will be happy.
Am supposed to be in the 2nd wave as didn’t get it in the first wave but am just worried as my Tour has had 2 problems. It spent 2 weeks in garage when we were doing 2.4 upgrade and I have just had ECU replaced, that’s another 8 days in garage,am just worried my car is one of those which will need to go into the garage again for 3.0
VW OTA has been a total disaster. I have been an ID.3 1st Pro Performance owner for over 2 years and still not a single OTA landed in my car. VW stopped even communicating when this will happen. I'm selling the car now. I can't live with all those bugs or "features" as VW calls it. Getting a Tesla Model Y.
Available updates start to show in menu consistently on v 3.0, I found out just today! It showed in the settings - system info menu. So I could select and went from 0362 to 0365, if I m not wrong.
The lights do not mean you have an update. You get a message in the infotainment system if one was downloaded. The Id light animation just shows the car boot up process
Can I have 3.0 for my first generation Cupra Born now? xD After I've seen this, I'm worried if I will ever receive an update like that. It seems like it took VW a lot of effort just to develop a safe update for the ID.3... I've never checked but I'm pretty sure I don't even have the new 12V battery yet 😄 Manufactured in February 2022
You don't need the 12V battery changed. The cupra already has a good one in there. You will get 3.0 as some point. But I don't know if it will be ota or at the shop.
Hi Chris, I have successfully updated my ID.4 First to 3.0 in Madrid. However, the In-car Spotify and Apple Music Apps are not available in the in-car shop. Do you know when they will be available? Thanks
I emailed my contact dealer about the update to the software and the 12 volt battery replacement, I got a call back to schedule it and also to look at my main battery due to some campaign. Four days they'll need the car. Think they forgot about me 🤣 and are covering up the mistake.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, 🎉🎉 Best wishes from Canada 🍁 for a happy and healthy 2023🙏. The update video has become an epic tale. 😂😂 No ota updates for kia ev6 in Canada 😔.
@BatteryLife, You have earlier explained that car predownloaded the software package over 4G network. Only then you later start the install. When you start the install does the car have to have access to 4G network, or could it be in an underground parking during install?
This is really usefull information !! I'll follow these steps this evening as it takes 6-8 hours. I'll do an update tomorrow after it has done the update 🤞 !!
@@BatteryLife that is great info! I already have 3.1 on my 2022 ID4 in USA, so I’m looking forward to everyone getting on the same level soon, and hopefully clearing up a lot of issues for drivers with the updates.
Hi Chris! Glückwunsch 🍾🎉🎊! Zwei Fragen. VG
@@andrewjosey9760 I'm all done with part 1 now. I let the car sit for 12 hours, then unlocked, waited another two minutes, started it (button, not pedal), opened the shop, installed we connect plus, logged in using the qr code, installed we connect and finally I restarted the car. No error messages other than the first batch immediately after first boot but those are standard and can be ignored.
Dear Chris, may you have a blessed new year🌞 My ID.3 with SW2.4 exhibits the same “symptoms” as you describe in your Video (Park light stays ON, slow flashing ID light for a certain period, etc. I followed the recommended procedure to the letter, but no Update notification appeared. The charge is more than 50%, and the 4G is 3 bars. Mind you, I have not received any email from VW suggesting an update was available. Any thoughts? Kind regards, Antonakis
I would imagine VW will do this update the same way they did the last OTA. First they send consent emails to owners and after a few weeks from sending your OK you will get the update. So for the time being I'll be waiting for my inbox to activate...
@@otm205 no, you don't get an email like with 2.3 This only happened because the with 2.3 in the first update the Front Assist did not work for a while. That is a safety issue. People had to sign off on that.
@Battery Life I did everything as per your video to launch the install process… but no joy. I got the 2.4 update with the 12v battery recall a month ago at my local dealership, so I thought I’d get the 3.0 prompt soon after. I guess not. Did you perhaps get an email requesting that you accept to have the 3.0 installation before it was pushed to the car?
@@BatteryLife ahhh. I see. No I haven’t yet got the download message. I’ve been looking out for it for a month now. I’m not sure what the hold up is… I guess there must be a long queue of vehicles before it gets to mine (mine is a 2021 model bought in France btw). Thanks for the reply. One last thing. I guess there’s no email to expect in order to accept the update (like they did for the last OTA update).
I love my ID5 Pro, which was shipped with software 3.1 last October and is now updated to 3.2. There is one thing driving me crazy. It seems my car is losing preferences randomly. E.g. I want my mirrors to fold after closing and the mood lightning I change to blue (not auto mode). This works fine, but after driving it a few times (1, 2 or 3) the ambient lightning is suddenly switched to white and the mirrors no longer fold after closing. I have to again make the changes in the menu to active the mirror folding and set the ambient lightning to a specific color. Then again, randomly it forgets my changes after driving the car. Is there anyone else having this issue?
My dad's ID4 got the 3 update about one month ago, and all was working fine withing the phone app after installing the needed apps in the car. Now for some days, the location of the car, and some other things that were working fine on the phone app are not shown anymore. ie: the location for the car icon is missing, the "optimized battery usage" option is missing too within the phone app. It still shows that the car is locked/unlocked and if a door is open or closed. We have no clue what happened. The ID4 is still online!
Do you think you could upload a video if possible on OBDEleven and OTA 3.0 Heard so much weird stuff about things being unable to activate/deactivate. The one I am most intrested in is to set lane assist with "last set"/"last remembered" setting
Would you talk about bidirectional v2l function . Vw already declared they enabled it and old versions will be included with update. Such option os important during black out and current snow situation in usa
Sounds great. Still waiting here for Audi to update my Q4 so there isn't a privacy notice that pops up every time you start the car. VW and Skoda just seem to be so much more competent than Audi, despite the shared platform. Not that VW and Skoda are good at software, but just not as bad as Audi.
@@BatteryLife Yeah, Audi still hasn't added users, so you can only be "guest" which means that privacy settings can't be accepted. Just one of many issues.
Hi, big fan of your channel (en and ger). I should have gotten mine today, but it was posponed to the next week. What are the odds that my car has the version 3.0 already installed?
Hi Chris! Thanks for another great video! I would love to learn the best practice for how to configure the profiles. I have seen indications that VW screwed up by implementing too restrictive GDPR handling making it a complete useless feature. Can you create another profile for your wife and see what kind of limitations the main user have when car is in use/has been used by another profile? Have your main profile access to everything, or do you need to go into the car and switch users before you can access the APP functions? What kind of features brings the profile handling, any at all?
Could you upload a video, in which you do a test-drive with the 3.0 updated Walter? I am curious whether the screen’s speed/maps etc. has changed and also your personal experience with the new system.
Since I got my 3.0 last 2 weeks ago there are some strange things happening - radio doesn't work in a tunnel, when I pre-heat my car it also heats up seats and a stearing wheel to a max etc.
@@BatteryLife I know there is a setting for this - it's set as it was before the update - both low heating. Otherwise except some new icons and more date on the smaller screen there's not much new. I guess there are changes inside.
As a Tesla owner, I do have lots of respect for Volkswagen to make great vehicles. I had a chance to drive an ID4 and was quite impressed with it but I have to admit, the VW software would send me to long term therapy. The caption of Horror Mode seemed quite appropriate. If they can get the software figured out, Volkswagen will have a hit on their hands.
What a hassle of a process. I’m suprised VW doesn’t want me to sing a Bon Jovi song, cook a medium rare steak and withdraw cash from the nearest ATM to install the update too
Did you get an email from Volkswagen before the update was available to download? I am not sure if my ID.3 has a strong enough internet connection here...
@@BatteryLife Thx. My local VW dealer told me last week the update isn't ready for me yet. Problem is my car isn't moving every day and the internet connection here is weak so I'm afraid I will get the update months after it has been available due to the lack of a notification. Let's wait and see 😆
I just don't get it - it seems they are "hiding" these updates? By the way, our ID.4 1st Edition is scheduled to get the update - it requires replacement of the hardware - and they need it in the shop for two days, to do the complete procedure!
I have an ID3 DX Pro since last July with version 3 software. Works fine but as the infrastructure in Ireland is very poor and leans heavily towards Tesla it’s a bit nerve wracking to take on a long run. I too prefer our diesel Passat in winter to eliminate the anxiety of trying to get charged up for the return journey. I keep getting failed login errors when I get into the car despite successfully logging in using the We app using the qr code. Anyone know why this happens? Also the voice recognition regularly jumps into action without being intentionally activated by me which can be maddening! The touch interface is still very laggy and I have yet to work out settings for the HVAC that stop the car misting in cold weather on a long drive that don’t reduce range significantly. I find driving in D mode smoother but regeneration seems more aggressive in B mode. Does B mode use reduce brake pad life or anything that we should be aware of? All observations /experience welcome. My very best wishes to Chis and this community for all the days of the new year.
I'm in a ID.5 GTX. D is coasting/freewheeling, B is one pedal driving. Both use same amount of regen/brake featering, but in D you have to use the brake pedal, B will apply it as you lift the accelerator. I always drive in D, as I like the smoother ride, but it requires you to judge the traffic in advance, then there is normally no need to apply the brake as you flow the traffic flow, it's only for stopping at red light. You can see in the dash when regen is maxed out and the mechanical breaks starts. It's the green bar to the left under the speedometer. When it hits the end mechanical breaking starts. Note that regen power is dependent on temperature and state of charge. Sometimes the green bar is shorter. I had issues with the logins, it was that the car defaults to not contacting the VW servers, I had to go to settings and allow the car to communicate over 4G. Not that intuitive. Have the same issue with voice control. I'm on 3.0, but looking forward to plug and charge in a future update, 3.1 for 3.2 or what it will be called.
I got my ID3 today and with 3.2. I didnt get any features like parking assist plus or any apps like spotify and apple music in the shop. I live in Sweden.
Hi. Features like parking plus depend on the options you went for e.g. driving assist plus. Webshop might be geofenced as it was in German even though Chris' system is set to English.
Interesting to see, please update us on how the car is in the winter going forward as I believe the battery heating has been lowered from 8C to 0C to get better range in the cold, I'll be curious to see if you experience any range improvement/deterioration or any charging issues (slow charging).
That happened already with 2.4 And yes battery heater was never on this winter. Even when it was -9 outside. My battery never got to 0°C in the garage yet.
@@BatteryLife Oh, OK, in the Enyaq community they believe it was part of the 3.0 update. I found the SSP 811231 ID.4 manual online, that was from January 2021 so I figured 2.x. that specify 8c, but I haven't found any documentation on later sw revisions. Is there a "software change document" somewhere? Many changes cannot be seen by going through menus. Are you having the same issues charging? many Enyaq owners in Norway is barely getting above 65kw at 150-300kw chargers as the battery is so cold. My Enyaq RS has 3.1, and I have a heated garage both at home and at work and charge at home 99%, so really don't see the same problems other people do.
@@simondehaas8784 That makes sense. I got my RS on 8th of December, it had 3.1 already, I heard many Enyaq owners in Scandinavia is not happy with the update.
I used to be able to charge at 60 Kw on Ionity at around 12 Deg C battery temp, plugging in between 20-30%, I just can't imagine how slow it would be with a battery temp of 1-5 deg C. Cold battery charging is really a huge let down for electric car owners and it has a significant impact on long trips or when away from home. The id3 82 Kwh is my 3rd EV and I had hoped by now charging would be a lot better but it's not much better in cold weather if at all and one reason we now take the Diesel for long trips because I can't be bothered sitting around or sitting in a queue. My old BMW i3 Rex was a really amazing piece of engineering, longest range of any PHEV in the world as well as there being no mechanical connected between the engine and wheels, it acted strictly as a generator so I could, on long motorway drives enable the generator to preserve battery for slower roads and town driving, while I'm glad to have much more EV range in the id3 82 Kwh I really miss the generator for long trips as now I just take the Diesel Outlander instead to save a lot of hassle and a moaning Wife and Kids especially if there's a queue at the charger or a charger is broken then it's a long wait on an AC point. Having the range of the 82 Kwh backed up with a generator would make a significant difference, one maybe that could use biofuel or in the future Hydrogen and make an engine that can burn the hydrogen rather than a fuel cell, but Hydrogen has big disadvantages in that it's very inefficient to produce, then it has to be cooled down to -260 odd deg C ( I stand to be corrected on the temp ) for transport taking a lot more energy. 82 Kwh with a small petrol generator would be really convenient and avoid all this charging nonsense. Perhaps VW will implement battery precondition for charging but my guess is they won't because VW bosses probably drive around in diesels and couldn't care less. It's mad to think that when the battery heater used to come on all the time that it only did on battery power when you start the car and not when preheating off the mains........
LOL so much for "Wait until the big legacy manufacturers start making EV's they will so much better then anything even Tesla"🤣 You can reinstall a minor datacenter in less then a day but uppdating my ID3 not so....
