I had a similar experience at A&E and the mental health person asked something to the effect of 'what do you want us to do?' At that point I was okay, and my mind had sorta dissociated out of feeling things, and i was just thinking 'what are you saying??????' I think people need to understand in these moments we need people to care and to listen, not to judge or to fix us or assume things. Please just be kind and patient to us x

A lot of these people who work in the mental health field are absolutely criminal. A lot of them have zero understanding and zero compassion. I can attest to this because I have had 17 years of being treated horrendously by the mental health team and psychiatric hospital in my local area. I tried to complain about my mistreatment, and I was only treated worse as a result of doing so. There is no real oversight and protections, and unless you are able to capture video/audio evidence of the mistreatment or abuse they can simply deny any wrongdoing and say that you are suffering from delusions. Who is going to be believed?; a mental health 'professional', or a patient diagnosed with having a mental illness/disorder?

I'm sorry for your experience. The healthcare system simply isn't ready to deal with mental health issues. In 100 years these will be considered the dark ages just like we think of inpatient facilities in the 1920's now.

I was a support worker helping people with BPD and I can vouch for the fact that these people are subjected to disgusting amounts of retraumatizing stigma and outright Bellshit Perhaps there should be an online support group to help people with BPD and raise awareness while also reducing the stigma. Just a thought.

Hi. I do have empathy for you . The system is not very good. People do not listen. The whole concept of someone in distress being ignored, repulses me. I am not doing it to look cool, I aim to help. I do think BPD is like a bucket term, and people get it thrown at them like a term of abuse . It is not easy to put up with that. Best wishes.

I hate using the crisis team. I’ve also had some really bad experiences with the A&E people who come and talk to you after you go in there for a mental health reason. I told a guy I was going to go home and OD again, and he just did nothing. It’s really disheartening.

What I really wanted and needed was to be admitted to hospital so I could be safe but all I got were some benzos. It was traumatising and still effects me 2 years later.

Experienced this today. I've been struggling allot. I've tried to take my life twice.. today was the end and I reached out for help with the "crisis team" they left me in a waiting area for 3 hours then interrogated me... asked if I was autistic then left me for a further 3 hours in a room completely alone the door was locked so I couldnt leave. Worst experience I've ever had. The mental health system from my experience is an absolute shambles. I'm sorry what happened to you it's happening to everyone and it makes me cry at the thought of someone going through what I went through today. Much love

I went to A & E in an ambulance with a full blown uncontrollable panic attack, I did not know what it was at the time, which did not stop for 6hrs, we are talking extreme fear body shaking jumping out of my skin, loosing my shit out of character, i asked for some sedation and they said it wasn't indicated and just left me there freaking out. You wonder why so many people try to self medicate because all the meds you need are locked away until you get violent then they lock you up and release you a zombie, instead of doing early intervention. It took 20 years to get a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD because it was palmed off as depression and anxiety. I did not know what was wrong with me. However the ADHD diagnosis is incorrect and I am sure it's actually Bipolar, they are not interested unless I become violent is what I found out. I know my diagnosis is wrong because I have a scientific background and with the time waiting to be diagnosed I became more informed than a GP about mental health. That's not really difficult though when you work out how little they know

It is your journey. Our journeys are so personal. I believe my bipolar diagnosis is incorrect and my ADHD was actually what was happening. I would never stop taking my bipolar meds because what if I'm wrong? I am still flexible, especially with something as serious as bipolar (I was diagnosed with bipolar 2, not bipolar 1) I hope you get to a psychiatrist soon to get evaluated so that you know if you are bipolar. I wish you luck on your journey.

Fully love what you’re both saying here 👍 Sadly the type of person accurately described here, who goes into mental health work simply to appear virtuous, does exist. They are exactly the type of person who is ok with the type of behaviour necessary when putting empty key performance indicators, such as waiting room time, before actual patient care, essentially “cooking the books” to make themselves look good. These people need to be recognised for what they are and removed from their trusted positions, since they often are fine speakers adept at gaining admiration from others and thereby act as influencers. They are also exactly the type of person who may be behind the paradoxical inversion, extant within mental health services, of the hypocratic rule of first do no harm, since their prime aim of getting into mental health care was to make themselves look or feel good, or to get a pay check based upon studies undertaken for those reasons alone. Understanding problems as complex as an individuals mental health issues, which are impacted by other complex issues, is not for the faint of heart and not for people who don’t like to find out they don’t know, which is absolutely a necessary process of learning, it’s a totally unsuitable field for anyone wanting to feel good/ look good. I’ve noticed that, despite the recent trending “mental health” movement, we’re seeing and hearing opinions, within the wider community, so outdated and prejudiced that it reminds me of fundamental errors we challenged in the 1980’s (I’m old 😂). In my mind it is material that the first treatment for BPD was developed in the 1990’s by a woman with BPD, and it is material that the departments responsible for providing that treatment and others for BPD paradoxically emphasise that it’s important for the patient with BPD to take responsibility for themselves while failing to provide said treatments for their clients, and in the context of the backsliding regarding attitudes in the community, I think it’s material that the mental healthcare services are many peoples guiding light. Not only do some trusts in the UK not provide treatment for BPD, I’ve caught their practitioners seemingly deliberately pushing towards BPD as a misdiagnosis for likely multi-event ptsd, likely because they haven’t got a service for multi-event ptsd, but as they don’t treat BPD and the PD dept engage in the circular “thinking” described above, it makes a handy dumping ground for other things they don’t have depts for. It’s a mixture of protocol/policy issues, lack of funding and treatment and likely the type of “wrong person” described taking stewardship of all of the above. I’d also validate what Gloria said about self harm, I’d suspected their policy would feed into it, further muddying their diagnoses I would add. I realise this vid is 2 years old, however all the points raised are more relevant than ever at this time. The mental health services need to accept that they should have taken responsibility over this situation, before current issues it is facing in common with every other service and individual, became so bad. Lack of funding was never an excuse, a lack of honesty is and always has been the problem, and they not only fail to challenge ignorance, they take full advantage of and feed into it.

The mental health services in South Gloucester are appalling.. I've heard them dismiss people who are clearly having some sort of episode by saying they're fine as they're "up and dressed". Horrid thing to be so distressed and just wanting to be listened to but to be left out and alone. So damaging when the people that are there to care care nothing for anyone. Not to mention the flippant attitude and ridicule your subjected to is criminal.

Take my like!!! Bipolar 2 here and I feel the exact same way about crisis team/home treatment team as you. I was in a mixed episode and I was offered a bed in hospital but there was no beds so I was advised to go under crisis team so they could keep me safe and find me a bed. I've been under crisis before and hated it! They come in MY house and tell me to go for a god damn walk!! That seems to be their favourite line when actually the day I presented at a&e I'd been on a 40 minute bloody walk! ... Anyway my first meeting with the crisis team while waiting for a bed the guy told me that 'hospital deskills you' and that he's worked on the wards before and I don't want to go there. I'd been in hospital before, I'm not an idiot I know what it's like and trust me when I say I'd rather not have to go back but it's needed right now!! I did everything I could to be discharged from them. I faked being ok and everything. They finally discharged me. Guess where I ended up a few weeks later? In hospital!! So I outright refuse them now. Just give me drugs and leave me alone 🤣 I have to say though. The mental health liaison team at a&e in my area are wonderful! I actually appreciate the fact that they ask me what they can do for me, mainly so I can say 'Do not refer me to the crisis team' 😂😂 last time I went my CMHT referral was chased and they tired to get me a closer appointment with my psychiatrist. I usually go in knowing what I want and they are 99% very supportive even if I don't get the outcome I want.

The comments below and your video echo the experiences of my daughter the Crisis Team and also the Psych Liaison teams at our local hospital. I really don't know what they are for other than to give a promise of help only to be dismissive, unreachable on a human level, downright cruel at times and couldn't manage a cold cup of tea let alone a mental health crisis. I can only think the government needs to tick boxes that they provide a service but then because there is no money to fund the service the only staff that can be recruited are self-serving, ignorant and under educated - or so it comes across when dealing with them. Crisis Teams generally, it seems, are a vacuous bunch of automatons that do the very opposite of what they are designed for. They are a waste of public money and not fit for purpose.

i recently was out of hospital for an attempt, have a massive laceration. the doctors in uk felt sad for me, and they said to go seek mental health, eventually i was having more and more crisis and my parents and boyfriend called 111 and the guy on the phone referered me in to ECT unit, i got the uber there and go check in at A&E and the lady rudly said its that really an emergency. i almost died of shock hearing it. well called the guy back from 111 like " hey wtf" he just said sorry and that i can always called this number. then my mom called mental health crisis during a crisis, and they assests me again and then i got referered to a clinic with all the people and they will decided my case. they decided i go GP (im guessing for medication) and refered me to NHS talk theraphy. (so far that team is lovely, but i still dont have diagnoisis, or solutions to my problems,) have GP this month and another appointment with nhs theraphy. hopefully i will get somewhere. im also being looked at for Autism and bpd

@srldwg
@srldwg 5 месяцев назад
The thing is is that the crises center is not designed to be a psychiatrists office. Just like an emergency room is not designed to be a doctor's or specialist's office. A crisis in mental health is when someone is intending on harming oneself of others in that moment. I believe that her autism, which she is diagnosed with not caused her to need a support worked or professional (who understands autism to explain to her what the team was trying to communicate. We autistic people takes things very literally too. The woman wasn't implying for her to harm herself. That was her literal interpretation of it. When she did talk to another crisis worker, we tend to explain things in a skewed way, misrepresenting the situation (not intentionally, but because of emotional disregulation.) I was even in a mental hospital before I was diagnosed as autisic and had expectations of the staff that were not fair or emotionally regulated. They were just keeping me in a safe environment. It was my psychiatrist who was supposed to fulfill my expectations. I have myself also (unknowingly - until looking back) explained things about other people in a skewed way, due to emotional dysregulation. She doesn't express her communication difficulties (which are part of autism) where the person she is talking to is not clear on what she is expressing, so it is difficult for her to help her. After my autism diagnosis, I was able to look back and clearly see these situations as they were. I was shocked to see that my perception and communication difficulties caused me and others alot of stress and frustration. Of course, I thought "...but if they knew that I was autistic", which is s valid reaction, even to someone who couldn't have known.

I work at a mobile crisis team in the US. My role in the team is peer recovery coach, which means that I have lived experience with serious mental illness (schizoaffective disorder in my case). I do this job because I've had encounters with law enforcement during psychotic episodes, and I don't want others with mental illness to go through that. I work with licensed clinicians and case managers who all have their individual reasons for joining the team, but one thing is true of all of them: they sincerely want to help people who are struggling with mental illness. Maybe it works differently in the UK, but over here mobile crisis teams are for someone having an actual crisis. For example, suicidal/homicidal ideation, or psychotic symptoms that are putting them or someone else in danger--basically any mental health emergency that the police would otherwise have been dispatched to. They aren't really used for people who just need to be evaluated or connected with services. You just need to make an appointment with a therapist or psychiatrist for that. I'm a bit baffled that the place you were admitted to had you schedule an appointment with the crisis team. It's possible that they didn't understand the role that the team played (we're still a new concept to many people even within the mental health field). It sounds like what the mobile crisis team worker said was technically correct--that you weren't in a crisis so they couldn't do much for you. You misinterpreted that to mean that she was telling you to self-harm. She should have clarified that you would have to be evaluated with a mental health worker in a non-emergency setting.

Sounds like A&E did their best to get you to an appropriate area out of a busy waiting room perhaps they thought you needed a private area. Really difficult for space in A&E normally so during a pandemic it’s much harder. Also during triage you will flip between a patient with mental health needs, chest pain, a sepsis, safeguarding looked after children, ankle injuries etc & “other needs” so you have to prioritise and continuously change tact, pace etc. I am glad you got your psychologist referral it sounds like your happy about that. It must be difficult to be locked in with your own thoughts without a reason why and as you said your memory of the event is not 100% accurate but you obviously are not happy with how you feel about it. As for the Crisis Team I cannot comment on how things where said and if it came across as flippant that’s not acceptable but they have responded to a referral in a timely manner attending your own home so it’s easier for you. Their job is to assess your risk in the immediate future which is why the self harm question came out. To determine future risk you have to look at past events. The generalisation aimed at mental health workers is immature and hurtful but you are entitled to your opinion on that as it’s your personal experience based on a girl you lived with. Perhaps there needs to be an A&E aimed specifically at patients who are in a crisis so they can be seen timely and effectively. Ultimately like physical health it’s a partnership and there needs to be cooperation between the user/patient and healthcare team so hopefully your experience will improve future relations between the two. I know you have altered my view of things.
@GLOsLife
@GLOsLife 3 года назад
No, they moved me to a different area because I’d been there too long and it’s policy to not have people waiting in the waiting area for longer than that time set. That’s how that hospital worked. It wasn’t during a pandemic considering it was 2018. I’m starting to think you didn’t watch my video. I assume you’re part of the nursing community and got offended so decided to leave this very dismissive and passive aggressive comment. Just because you don’t believe what I say doesn’t make it not true.
@davidhornsey6141
@davidhornsey6141 3 года назад
@@GLOsLife I have worked across many hospitals and my comment was it’s difficult for space in A&E normally pre pandemic and the policy you are referring to is not accurate so I have no clue why you would say that other than that you where misled. I am not being passive aggressive at all I wish you the best and I am hope you are well. I have for sure reflected on the comments you have made in your video and will take them with me to my own practice however some of the comments are flippant. It sounds like you want empathy to your situation and you have it from me if you want it however empathy works both ways. Look at the positives from the situation, the speedy referral made during a busy A&E, the follow up care etc. It’s your RU-vid channel though and you are entitled to your own opinion or to rant which is what this sounds like.

I've quite a bit of experience with BPD people and after many years of dealing with it with patience, learning, caring - in the end I can sum it up as 'the purest selfishness'. If I can give advice to anyone, it's if you meet a BPD person, don't waste a single moment of precious life on them, they're a bottomless pit of self pity and you can NEVER fill it. They will take from others forever with no end, and they just don't care. Keep away from them.

Try living with that level of astronomical pain and misunderstanding and you’ll see.

@@n0b0d1-rc6dz try living with that amount of selfishness and self pity and you'll see: Perceiving problems, making problems when there are none, even when people do 'anything and everything' for them. Taking and taking. But however one looks at it, nothing of what you write detracts from what I wrote.
