My F150 Lightning Broke......Twice!!!

Hi everyone. Today's video is just the story of the problems I have experienced with my Lightning. Let me know if you have any questions.
Couple other notes: I charge my lightning to 80% almost daily and very rarely dc fast charge. This was a manufacturer defect and not owner neglect.

Man that sucks it happened to you. Ive had mine for 20,000 problem free miles. Like you said about 4% of the trucks get this issue.

17k miles, no problems, a few recalls that were very minor. In fact most recall problems hadn't occurred on my lightning prior to ford installing the corrections that were to avoid any problems. My dealer has just started sending technicians to my home to install recalls, so I don't even need to take the truck to the dealer for these anymore. It's great.... Love my lightning. I'd purchase another over any other EV truck in a heartbeat.

My experience with my 2022 Lighting Pro has also been frustrating. I did a lot of research and data gathering with an OBD module, first. The dealer has had the truck since July 26th, except for a couple of weeks. Took it in because it wouldn’t AC charge higher than about 8Kw (34 amps) without faulting. DC charging no issues. After the first visit, I contacted the Ford BEV customer experience group to make sure the issue was escalated when it needed to be. Most of the time until about a month ago was misdiagnosis and waiting for back ordered wrong parts. They’ve changed some expensive unneeded parts. After the last repair failure in January, I forwarded them a link to a similar problem in the Mach E forum, and said I thought it was a faulty temperature sensor in the charge port assembly. They all caucused and called me back to say they agree. So another order for a back ordered part. The new part was put in and they think they solved that problem, then found during a HV battery test with FDRS that “array” 9 had 2 bad cells and needed to be replaced (ordered and took about 3 weeks). That’s being done this week. The dealer has had me in new F150’s the whole time (have to trade them out when I add 4000 miles) and Ford BEV folks are reimbursing the gas bills. There was a little discussion about buying the truck back but I’m not there, yet. I really like the truck, even a little more than my Tesla MY, the truck can haul a whole pallet of horse feed. The Tesla, not so much.

Thanks, when I reserved the truck I knew to be prepared for a wild ride on the dealer’s technology learning curve. I think I’ve helped fill in knowledge gaps at the dealer, like the difference between AC charging and DC charging, Ford Charge Station doesn’t actually cram energy into the truck the truck decides, just because the problem happens with 2 different EVSE stations doesn’t mean it’s the utility company’s problem, etc. For the first 3 months they said they couldn’t reproduce the problem on their 6Kw stations. I went to the dealer to pick up the truck (they were giving up) and noticed 2 FCS Pro EVSE stations in sales delivery I asked sales what their capacity was and they proudly said 80 amps. After asking to test, I moved my truck to one of them and reproduced the problem for about a half dozen dealer employees (VP, lead tech, sales, etc) over and over, including showing what was going on in the Car Scanner app. c’est la vie

Thanks for the update. I was really interested in a lightning, but now that we have lots of feedback and know how dealers really struggle trying to fix these, I have decided to hold off. I guess as an early adopter, this is the price you pay as new technology will always need time to be proven. One of the main takeaways from this video was how much you still love your lightning compared to the gas F150.

Ya if it wasn’t for these issues I wouldn’t even think about getting rid of it. Now though I have to think long term if I could trust the truck out of warranty.

If I didn't already have my Pro SR, I would be HUGELY tempted to take advantage of all the incentives that Ford is offering on higher level trim Lightnings with ER batteries. I am regularly seeing amazingly good deals. Sure, the 2024 will have a heat pump system, but I live in Southern California and rarely see any effect of temperature on my range. But the 2024s also deleted the twin chargers on the ER models, which I see as far more important; the ability to AC charge at up to 20 kW/h at home (and a small number of public chargers) is both cool and very useful, especially with the ER battery.

I just came out of a 7-week fiasco with my 23 Pro, EXACT same issue, it took Ford Field Engineers to figure out how to fix it....I have filed a buyback request, I don't think these trucks are ready for primetime, yet !!

@@KurtsRPMGarage yup, my Pro was built early 11/2022 and sold as 2023 model. I now started having phone connectivity drops/errors to the point I can't use my phone, Aaaaand random loud hissing/static sounds while driving that scare the crap out of me !!! Very disappointing indeed, and to know that I waited nearly 2 years to purchase this truck BEFORE Ford lowered the price 😞😡 oh, and I just went over the 6K mile mark

Thanks for the video. We've missed you and now know why. Think it's a good truck, just needs a few repairs. It has a long drivetrain warranty, so think you're good. Maybe you'll eventually get a new battery. I have a 23 as well, but so far not one issue. I did get the recall notice, but haven't taken it in yet. I look forward to more from you and the Lightning.

Thanks for sharing, Kurt. My SR Lightning Pro was built a few weeks after yours. Except for a charge port door problem - which was replaced in record time by the dealer (I lost the use of the truck for about two hours after they secured the part by air express) - my Lightning has trouble-free (knock on wood...). I'm at nearly 25K miles in 13 months, with a ton of highway driving. I wouldn't trade it for anything (well, maybe an ER version with 9.6 Pro Power).

That's great to hear. For whatever reason I just got really unlucky. I agree with you, a big reason I haven't given up on the truck is that there is nothing else like it. I would consider trading it in if I found a killer deal on an ER XLT or Pro though.

Wow! That really sucks to go through this twice, but thank you for sharing. I really like my 2023 Lightning Pro extended range (built Oct 2023). I'm hoping they improved / have some of the earlier issues worked out, but time will tell. Thanks.

Ugh….I’ve been looking at the F150L and Rivian, but I think I may need to stick with my Tesla MY for a couple of years. I agree with you, I would want Ford to replace the entire battery. Thanks for the video!

It seems like most of these problems are happening with the 2022 build years. That or the ‘23s haven’t had enough road time yet. Edit: this is what warranties are for!! I hope you have better luck. I love my lightning and following you has helped me love it more. Stick with it.

This happened to me literally within the first 24 hours of ownership back in 2022. Back then they didn’t know it was the battery module and replaced the high voltage contact plates. So after that repair it left me stranded between Vegas and Cali a few weeks later. It took them 6 weeks to diagnose and repair (they had to replace the module twice because they fried the first one during the install).

Right on, good to know. I’ve not had anything like this happen to mine. At least it’s good they are modular and replaceable, unlike other companies, but it’s bad to see it happen twice. On the bright side, at least you’re getting some new cells. I keep mine under 95% state of charge for longevity. Good luck ahead.

Interesting.... I had a May 2022 production Lariat. Truck's power steering died while in motion and luckily rolled into a parking lot where the truck completely died. I'm now 41 days in and have a lemon law buyback approved as the part that they were looking for is indefinitely back ordered. I assuming it was a high voltage to low voltage converter/inverter, but not 100% positive as I have really only been talking to Ford Corporate. Hopefully your trucks problems are behind you so you can enjoy your truck again! I am hoping that once my buyback offer includes a new Lariat replacement, but we'll find out this week.

Your experience is certainly not normal, I work parts in a ford dealership on the service counter. I have yet to see any problems with the lightning.

Same experience here. In the shop for 5 months, after the first 9 months were good. Built around the same time as yours. All shared on the owners forum site. Did a lemon repurchase that concluded about a month ago.

This happened to my 2023 lighting lariat. Dropped it off May 06 2024. It's still there now.... 4 modules later. Today is July 4th 2024.

No hate here. I’ve got a 2023 XLT SR with 12.5k miles. Delivered 4/6/24. Built last week of 23 maybe early Jan 24? Then there was the stop shipment which left mine in Delaware for a couple months. Just 80 miles away from me in NJ. I’m on the fence of whether I’d keep my truck if I had two issues. Haven’t had one yet. If I got to three issues I think I’d definitely trade it in. Hoping for many more trouble free miles.

Right now there just isn’t anything else on the market (or in my price range) that interest me. I may give it a year and see what’s out there or if I find a killer deal on an extended range xlt that would also be an option.

@@KurtsRPMGarage I’ve been meaning to come back to add something. I think if my XLT SR ever has repeat battery issues I would seek out a used Lariat ER to trade into. I like just about everything EV wise. And this is my first. You have other EVs, no? A Tesla? Have you covered it in any videos?

I have 2023 Lariat 4500 miles. It’s been at the dealer for 5 weeks now for a battery module replacement. Dealer is been working with engineers from Ford to try to figure out how to fix it. Now they are waiting for some harness that’s on the back order and no one knows when it will be available.

I have a 22 Lariat Lightning and it is currently in the shop for this same issue. I just got it back from the 20k mile checkup. 2 days later i got this error, and only running at 57 percent. My local dealership said it woukd take about a 1 - 1.5 weeks to fix. I currently have a loaner (explorer), but its nothing like driving the Lightning. I really hope this doesnt happen again while on my road trip next month.

I hope they give you additional warranty. When this happens. Because if this were to happen to me, let’s say a couple of months before the warranty period is up and then it happens after the warranty. You’d be SOL. it seems like they’re trying to when customers with their new product so I’d like to think that they would extend at least the warranty for the battery module in additional couple of years in case something else happens

I have heard that Ford has reimbursed other Lightning owners with HVB warranty issues for loaner fuel costs if you send them the receipts.

Just had this happen to me after 15k miles in my Pro. Dropped it off at the dealer tonight so hopefully it's closer to the 8 day turnaround rather than the 35 day turnaround

May 2022 Build and I had 2 modules fail. The first one failed at 7000 km and took 7 weeks to repair and the second failed at 50000 km at took 6 weeks to repair. Seems ok now. We shall see if this battery holds up.

I had one go as well. I kept my truck for the two weeks it took to get parts. I would clear error codes then drive

Did you have limited power? I actually never tried resetting the codes. My dealer was quick to give me a loaner so there was no point in hanging on to it.

​@@KurtsRPMGarageMy Pro ER broke down at 800 miles. It needed a shifter module and the dealer told me Ford would not return the truck to me until it was repaired. They put me in a rental too.

You obviously used the wrong type of electricity when you charged it wrong. Power from wind energy is cleaner than the coal fired electricity. It says it right there in the manual.

great update. what was the dealership you used. in CA and want to know who is getting the repairs done. this summer I am ordering the kicker F150 sub might have ford install. let me know if you do an install of one. again thanks for all the tips on factory mod installs. hope this is the last issue have.

My local dealer is Villa Ford of Orange. They aren’t perfect but they have been pretty good to me through the process. I don’t have plans for one at the moment but I’ll look into and see what I can do.

You can do the work yourself it's very simple but you'll have to get it programmed add a Ford dealer. And aftermarket sub wired into the rear speaker would do just as well n might be cheaper

Same experience here. 22’ Lariat with failed battery twice. I started the buyback via BBB. Waiting on Ford to issue their decision. Did you keep your truck?

Your right about replacing the battery, what happened is having a new module in with the other that makes the pack there is a small voltage difference, tesla has this problem, they had to make packs that were completely made of similar used voltage battery modules.

. I especially like the way you gloss over the fact that there's 5 or 10 recovery done every time you bring it to the dealer for regular concerns ...You're going to run out of fingers and toes if you keep counting

Which build number are you, the last 5 digits of the vin is the build number. Mine is within 3300 builds and no issues so far with 14,000 miles.

In curious how much negative equity you have on your truck? You should enter the info online and see what the cash offers are for your truck vs how much you owe.

I don’t believe so. There was an OTA to help the truck identify problem modules but the issue is a hardware problem.
