I was so sad when the book Lonesome Dove ended. Rarely have a felt that way about a book that is almost 900 pages!!!

"Supposedly Fun" has such resonance for me because when I was about 10-12 years old, receiving a book as a gift decidedly did Not float my boat. It seemed more like a chore. But in my adulthood, reading is such a treasure. I love that it takes me places I have never gone, or ever will be able to go to. And explores with different eyes experiences I might be closer to. It can take me through all emotional states. Why is your channel called Supposedly Fun? Thank you so much for your videos and mentioning buddy reads!

Probably because of the book "A Supposedly Fun thing I'll never do again" by David Foster Wallace.

BELOVED is incredible. It’s criminal that I only learned of it’s existence a few years ago. Truly something everyone should read.

I read The Great Believers and loved it. Totally agree with you. The present time frame actually didn't have the same impact as the 1980s period and it weakened the book for me. I think if the present time was made just as a prologue and epilogue would have made the book stronger. This was a 4-star read for me.

I read A fine Balance many years ago, maybe over 10 years ago and I think I was at a different point in my « reading life » and didn’t appreciate it. I think reading it now would be a better experience for me… I’m very impressed by how you can remember details for books you read years ago! 😅😂

Larry McMurtry's book successfully transcended regional fiction onto a national stage. The success of Horseman Pass By and The Last Picture Show as books and later as films didn't hurt. McMurtry was popular with women readers. Over the years I met many women who told me that he understood and wrote women well. I casually knew his son James McMurtry when I lived in Austin and frequented his shows. He is wonderful musician. "Song for a Deckhand's Daughter" is a masterpiece in songmaking. Lonesome Dove gave McMurtry a second life, and the success of the t.v. mini series introduced him to a new generation. McMurtry was also an avid book collector, who travelled the country buying up rare books for his bookstores in Archer City. One day he bought "my" Vladimir Nabokov's Eugene Onegin translations, 1st editions, hardbound, from an Austin book seller I knew. I said they were "my" books until I could afford to buy them. One day McMurtry came and raided the place, making my friend quite happy, and me disgruntled ever since:)

Great video, it inspired me to go find my favorite books of the last five years (still in progress and so much fun)! The very fascinating thing about loving certain books is that e.g. I love many of your favourite books and authors, yet I found A Place For Us boring and Hamnet's writing style over the top😂. As many booktubers with very similar taste to mine love those, it was almost a shock to me that I didn't like them...

I am now reading Lonesome Dove (mentioned my intent to do so in a comment on one of your other videos). I *did* read the prequel Comanche Moon, first, though, being a bit of a chronology stickler - and it was great, but Lonesome Dove is better, I think. And so readable!

After I watched your best books of the last 25 years video, I picked up A Place for Us and loved it. Now I’ve bought so many books on your videos that I’ve absolutely adored. You really had me at Sue Grafton though, once I found out that you had her book collection. So happy that I found your channel.😊

The problem with "The Great Believers " is that the author spread herself too thin. It was a moving novel, but the tension kept dissipating.

Oh my gosh when you said how the part at the river from lonesome dove haunts your dreams, i totally related! My part that I literally dreamt was near the end of that book. It's extremely rare for a book to impact me in that way

Of this group, Hamnet is my favorite hands down, but I have not read a lot of these books yet. Considering how I feel about Hamnet though… it would be a tough book to beat. Great list and great, fun video! I’m still reading for this year, but I don’t think anything will break into my best books of the year. When I went through my app to see what I had read this year, I was surprised to find a bunch of really great books. I had been thinking that my reading year was quite blah, but there were some great ones. I’ll be working on my best of list and will post it as a comment when you do your video.

I never comment but I loved this video. I’ve read many, but not all, of these and I loved hearing your thoughts. It made me look at a couple of them differently (Great Believers) and made me want to reread others (Shuggie Bain and A Place for Us). As always, love your channel and all the content you put out.
