I have vague childhood memories of Chex marketing their original 'mix' on their cereal boxes during the holiday season. I think I just dated myself. I'm going to try this New Years Eve for the fam. Thank you!
Dave In the 1960's when I was a child Chex came out with a recipe on the back of the box during the holidays. Your recipe is by my recollection close to the original Chex recipe although I believe it had less Seasoned Salt, and was baked in the oven, not smoked.I Love that you use Fresh Garlic, if you want to make it easier on yourself invested in a garlic press, or a micro plane, but the press is less expensive. I use only fresh garlic, cause to me powdered garlic tastes like garlic scented dust, but to each their own. But, once my mom made the original Chex recipe we made it anytime we wanted an easy to make snack 😎
Chex party mix actually came out for Thanksgiving. That was few decades back, later on Chex started promoting it more for Christmas time. I love this stuff and will eat it anytime. I sometimes make it with franks hot sauce because they're used to be a recipe on the box about 20 yrs ago. I'm going to try smoking a batch because I love smoked foods.
Can I just say how much I LOVE that big honking mixing bowl?! That is a serious bowl, with way less risk of spilling out, so you can really stir, and not 'dab, dab, dab' as you attempt to blend it all together. Excellent bowl.
I make one Known as Nuts and Bolts. This Fall I made it in. The slow cooker. IM going back to a roaster pan in the oven. 1)We don't have a smoker and 2) it's not as easy to evenly cook & stir in a Slow Cooker. You must leave it open at the end to dry out.I like your fresh garlic I muse.Pretzel sticks& cheerios w/ rice chex or crispex.🎉
When using warm or cold stuff but not hot stuff and you don't have a large enough bowl you can place all of the ingredients into a large plastic bag if you have. I've seen people use shopping bags as well as brand new of course trash bags...so, after everything is in you twist the bag closed leaving air space for everything to toss well, and then gently toss the ingredients around until well mixed. This method also means less clean up afterwards, lol!!!
Made this recipe for my birthday weekend & it is fantastic! I cut back on the Chex & doubled up on the extras instead. Nothing mucks up a good Chex mix like too much Chex!🤣 You were right, when you get the fresh garlic pieces, they are fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Chex mix is something that my grandpa would make in HUGE batches and he would send it out all over the country and sometimes the world, we are a military family. Everyone in the family looked forward to the box from our grandparents and that bag of Chex mix was always treated like gold in my house. Now that he has passed, I have started to make it and send it out.
my grandpa would make me pumpkin cheese cake. My dad made it for me once but he cant make it for me anymore. Maybe i will be blessed to have him make it for me this year but thats not looking like it will happen.
Tradition growing up in my house too. I use fajita seasoning, some liquid smoke and Maggi seasoning instead of Worcestershire cause SIL is allergic to fish. I always use the wheat Chex for that added fiber along with mixed nuts! 15:51
About 40 or so years ago, Nalley made a snack mix called Merry Mix. It was the best snack mix ever. It's pretty much the same thing as the Chex mix but Merry mix would use white Cheeto puffs too. I prefer to use powdered Worcestershire sauce. The powder makes it stick better to the mix. Which adds that deeper flavor that we crave.
I use extra worchester also and if I have wheat chex I use some but mainly for just appeal. If you save some bread sticks you can toast the slices and they also add a lot to it. nuts are good but they tend to fall to the bottom. I like lots of rice chex or crispex but My favorite is using bugles lightens up the mix and they are delicious. And who doesnt like a bugle. I find them on sale and add pretzels also. My go to kick is Tony chacheries (sp) cajon seasoning. I add a little to each batch it has a little heat with it lingering to long.
Thank you so much for sharing all of your delicious recipes! This recipe looks absolutely amazing! Can't wait to try it! My family and I love your RU-vid channel! Thank again, we really appreciate it! :)
Throw some chili powder and cumin in the spice mix. Gives a real southwest flavor. If you want it really spicy add a dash or two of cayenne. My family insists that I make my spicy Chex mix at Christmas time. I didn’t do it one year and they were so bummed out.
I had some of my mom's mix today. My Mom would make huge batches of this and give it out as gifts. We had our own ziplock bag that no one could touch! It was addictive. It was legendary and I had friends and co workers try it too and want some. It can get pricey with nuts and cereal and different add ins. Now I make it too but add more seasonings and boldness like this. Gonna try smoker! Love that. Try adding honey flavor chex or nuts that give some sweetness. I love the sweet crunch along with savory.
It’s amazing this came out 11 months ago? And it showed up on my feed. I love wheat chex. It used to be my favorite cereal but I’m carnivore keto so I don’t eat that way. But I don’t have a problem with it in my Chex mix and I’m going to make some for a party coming up. I’ll be interested to see if this is a really good recipe here.
Pro Tip - Set your monitor that shows your recorded screen directly behind or slightly above the camera, so when you look at yourself it looks as if your still talking to the audience...
My grandson & I & I suspect my daughter absolutely LOVE wheat chex. I use Crispix and saw recipe the other day where someone used Crispix and wheat. To each, his own.
My Chex mix story is I used to be skinny. And one Christmas ate so much. Check makes that I started to gain weight and it hasn’t stopped since. I have to not eat any grains or sugar. I do not know why it triggered me to gain weight but that was it. Now I just enjoy a little bit of Christmas. I don’t dig into it every day.
Glad I stumbled across this; I've been looking at recipes online and this one seems like what I'm aiming for. I don't have tabasco on hand right now, but I do have some of my favorite "Slap Ya Mama" cajun seasoning and I think I'll add that.
I love the idea of cooking it in the smoker, maybe get my husband involved. I was going to add smoked chipotle tobasco sauce to it and wasn’t sure how much but I think I’ll go with your amount and go from there. We might be eating it all year😁
I add one cup of cashew nuts. And one cup of mixed nuts. No Cheez it or goldfish. Sometimes I’ll make a batch with three or 4 tablespoons of honey. I will also add about teaspoon of mustard.
I am new to your channel and have watched both versions of the chex mix. They both look amazing! I like the idea of using fresh garlic however, garlic hurts my stomach. I wonder if there would be a way to infuse the fresh garlic into the spice mixture and then remove the chunks. My mom use to make this at the holidays but I'm sure she just followed the recipe on the back of the box.
When he was first slicing up the garlic, I thought that he was going to put it with the melted butter & let it infuse & then remove the pieces before adding the seasonings…. Maybe try that? And make the slices larger for easier removal?
I’ve always thought that Chex Mix needed much more seasoning. I came looking for a recipe that was more flavorful or at least one to go off of to make my own version. We always love the little rye bread chips & bagel chips in Pub mixes, so I would love to add those in place of pretzels.
I miss my mom's homemade chex mix. The store bought stuff just isn't the same. No one wants those damn round pretzels. I liked the pieces that were soaked with extra butter and worcestershire. We did it legit, Corn Check, Rice Check, and the best of the best...Wheat Chex.
Here's my variety: Spicy Chex Mix Dry Goods 6 cups Crispix cereal 1 can Planter's Spanish peanuts (12.5 oz) 2 cups Gardetto's garlic rye chips 2 cups Rolled Gold pretzel sticks 2 cups Utz potato sticks Sauce 2 sticks Kerrygold salted butter (2 cups), melted 4 Tsp Worcestershire sauce 2 Tsp Cholula chili garlic hot sauce 1 Tsp Liquid Smoke 1 Tsp Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning 1 Tsp Lawry's seasoned salt 1 Tsp garlic powder 1. Preheat the oven to 275°F and prepare a turkey roasting pan. 2. Add all dry goods to the pan. Stir until evenly combined. 3. Melt the butter in a saucepan and stir in seasoning ingredients. 4. Drizzle the seasoned melted butter evenly across dry goods mix and stir until evenly coated. 5. Bake for 60 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes. Stir the mixture using a spatula, scraping the sauce from bottom of the pan back into the mixture. 6. Allow to cool and serve.
The original receipt calls for a can of salted mix nuts. I know this because I was around when this first came out at christmas.use a cookie sheet pan To bake it on.
Chex mix was around at Christmas when I was 6 in 1960. I believe it was advertised by quacker oats or ralston as a Christmas/ new year’s cocktail party offering. VERY MIS CENTUARY. After that it was always advertised and it swept the country. To this day I think of it as Christmas though I make it more in summer. Go figure.
Ahh, is there a smoke ring? 😜 We have a gas smoker and put wood chunks in it. I think I'll try mesquite. I make Chex mix all year. But I've never smoked it. Love the overdose of spices! Have you ever smoked Mac and cheese? Mmmm
@@bnwing thank you … after I watch the whole video, got the answer and be lined it to IKEA and got one. Thank you for replying to my question… so thoughtful of you. Happy Holidays!
I realized years ago - why should I buy 2 boxes of cereal when I could get the rice and corn together in Crispix! been making it that way ever since :-)
I hated the Wheat Chex when I was a kid. Now, with a more sophisticated adult palate I love them in the mix! I make mine with only the three Chex cereals. Sometimes add plain Cheerios, sometimes Life cereal for a little sweetness. The only nut I use is pecan halves. Yum! I also double the entire mix of sauce ingredients - including the butter! Now I want to add a tiny bit of Liquid Smoke to the sauce. Never thought of that! Don’t know why, since smoke is my favorite flavor. (You can take the girl out of Texas, but …) You’ve really made me hungry for this now! I’m with you - it’s not just a holiday snack!! Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
If you like wheat Chex try "wheat biscuits minis", they are little flavor bombs. They soak up tons of seasoning. We also use Fritos, roasted pecans, assorted nuts, Cheetos.
My grandmother started making this for the holidays using the original recipe. She used her cast iron skillet and a large turkey roaster pan. Over the years she added her special touches like adding Cheerios, tripling the sauce, and lots of nuts. I think what makes it special is how each family makes it their own which is always the best!
My sister makes this, she cuts the butter by a 1/4 or less and adds that amount of bacon grease. 😳 oh my, that is good, plus she does add just a scant amount of liquid smoke. I’m a lucky recipient of this deliciousness! I love my sister!
I didn't like wheat chex when I was a child, but now that I am and "older" adult, I really like the wheat. I LOVE chex mix. I was just sitting here eating some this morning. I will have to try your recipe.
I used to make Chex mix for my kids. They each had a pail that ice cream used to come in. They each had a full pail and they would bring that to their rooms and snack on it while doing homework or listening to music…..they did not have cell phones back then…..my husband and I were lucky to have a bowl to ourselves. My recipe was similar to yours but still a tad different. I baked mine after adding the wet ingredients. This was back in the sixties.
My Favorite Chex Mix Recipe: I use only Rice and Corn Chex (not wheat) or Crispix, 9 or 10 cups of dry cereal. Then I add a whole lot of nuts -- 32 oz bag of deluxe mixed nuts plus 32 oz bag of cashew halves and pieces plus one of those 9 or 10 oz cans of cocktail peanuts. Put in about 2/3 of a large bag of pretzel mini twists. Use your hands to combine the dry ingredients gently. I combine 2 sticks of butter, melted, with 4 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, and 1 Tablespoon seasoned salt. I pour the butter mixture over the dry ingredients and very gently combine it with your hands while wearing some cheap plastic gloves. I have a very large pan (21 inches by 15 inches) that I bought in a kitchen goods store just for making Chex Mix. Spread it all out. Bake at 225 degrees F. for an hour, stirring carefully every 15 minutes. Spread it out over a few sheets of newspaper to let it cool for an hour. Then store it in air-tight containers or bags. People love this end result. It seems stingy to go with one cup of nuts or pretzels. Be generous with your cooking. You want to delight your guests. This is a special treat that I sometimes put into quart size zip top bags as gifts to friends. It's a great gift for office friends, a regular delivery person who you appreciate, people who have everything they need, or those who live in a tiny place and don't have space for more stuff.
I grew up living on top of a grocery store. When I was small, there was no Chex mix. There was a snack called "Doo Dads". Turned out to be the predecessor of the Chex Mix that is popular today. I used to take an entire box of the "Doo Dads" and put it in the oven with a stick of melted butter drizzled over the top. I would bake it at 375 degree for about 20-25 minutes. Then I would cool it for about 10 minutes before serving. It was delicious ❤️💯 !!
This takes me back oh so manny years ago when my mom made this from the recipe off the box, but I think she jazzed it up with either or both hickory smoked salt or liquid smoke ie we didn't have pellet smokers back in the 70's
My mother used to make something like this using Shreddies. I had to search the websites of our major groceries chains here in Edmonton; because I just don't notice Chex on the shelves. Maybe it's just not that big a thing here in Canada. Gonna hafta give this a try, though.
I always use a sprayer to put the butter on, so everything thing is coated, and then I sprinkle my spices on. I always sprinkle then taste sprinkle some more until it is seasoned to my liking. I always add more than the recipe calls for. I also added gold fish pretzels instead of regular.
I make a big batch a couple times a year. I mix it in clean garbage bag and leave it for about 48 hours, shaking periodically. I don’t bake it at all. I use Orville redenbacher popcorn oil for my wet ingredient. I like to add in the baked cracker with cheese combos, Keebler mini crackers, rice & corn Chex, pretzels, bagel chips. I use lawrys, garlic powder ranch dip powder. So yummy!
Fantastic, man. I’m making this today for the playoffs, but I don’t like garlic. I do however like onion,so we’re all good, going to add some bugles to the recipe. Thanks again,David. Subscribed to your channel, looking forward to the next video.
My aunt made Chex mix when I was little…(I’m 71 y/o). She called it Nuts and Bolts. Why??? I don’t know. I made a double batch and it is gone already. I shared it with my son. I pretty much follow the Chex Mix recipe except I add Cheerios….but I may try yours too.
Dave, do you think maybe a teaspoon of liquid smoke might work for those of us without a smoker? Be brave and try it -maybe with a small portion of a batch - let us know!!
Good quality nuts are important. Cashews, toasted pecans, Smokehouse almonds & macadamias. I add sesame sticks too. And spicy Japanese rice crackers & wasabe peas. You can usually find those in cans in the Asian section of the grocery store, at least here in So Cal.
