I normally wouldn't release two rum cocktails in a row but today is National Daiquiri Day! Yay! So of course we're going to release a daiquiri video!
The history of this drink's ingredients is far older than the drink itself. The mixture of Rum, Lime and Sugar traces it's history waaaaay back to the 17th Century when the British began importing it back to England from the west indies. It wasn't very long before the seafaring folk doing the actual importing figured out how delicious it was to make punches by adding these things together. Once imported to England though, only the rich could afford these rarified ingredients. I haven't done the research to prove this but I'm pretty sure this mixture of alcohol citrus and sugar did it's part in the creation of Pirates. The sailors risking their lives to import a product they couldn't afford I'm sure pissed them off enough to rebel and take hold of these valuable commodities for themselves.
Fast Forward to 1740 when British Navy Admiral Edward "Old Grog" Vernon ordered that all Rum rations for the men be mixed with Limes (they'd figured out that it was a cure for scurvy by now) and sugar to dilute the potent spirit. At the time England was at war with Spain and now that the British were a little more healthy and a tad more sober than their Spanish counterparts which gave them a small advantage. But still the modern day daiquiri wasn't made until...
...Another war with Spain was underway, this time the Spanish-American War around 1898. The story goes that an American mining engineer stationed in Cuba named Jennings Cox created the drink to help protect his workers from Yellow Fever. There were rumors that Cox created the drink at a dinner party when he ran out of Gin and only had Rum left. Several decades after that another man by the name of P.D. Pagliuchi claimed that he was in fact the creator of the Daiquiri and retold the dinner party story. We'll probably never know the true history but we can all mull it over while we're drinking this fantastic cocktail.
If you want a more comprehensive look at the history of the Daiquiri you should pick up Jeff "Beachbum" Berry's fantastic book Potions Of The Caribbean. Here's a link"

A brilliant drink. One I enjoy often. In fact the other afternoon I was about to imbibe a beautiful Appleton daiquiri when a curious thing happened. You see, whilst carrying a bottle of Angostura Amaro and another of Elemakule Tiki Bittermens up from the pantry to the bar (requisite drink in hand) I missplaced my footing somewhere near the top of the flight. What followed was a calamity of flips and crashes wherein 1/4 tsp Amaro and a blast of Bitters became perfectly intermingled with my daiquiri inside of the Nick and Nora. That day I acquired newfound appreciation for traction and a wonderful drink which my wife has lovingly dubbed the Staircase.

yes you are right on the timeline...rum rations was given twice a day to sailors and then lime was added to avoid scurvy and later on due to 80 ABV rum and its was very potent they could add sugar to sweeten it up doing extra duties on the ship...

Pirates were rampant in the Caribbean before what is considered the Golden Age of Piracy. Just look at Henry Morgan in the mid-late 1600’s. Pirates at that time were obsessed with Spanish Brandy rather than rum, since brandy was much more prevalent at the time. Still a great video, keep it up!

@christopherreed4723

The Royal Navy issued rum on a daily basis. Every sailor received a measure of it. The rum ration was an incentive for the crews, since a sailor's life was pretty unpleasant even by the standards of the day. Exemplary performance would be rewarded by ordering that the sailor(s) in question be issued an extra ration of rum. Minor disciplinary transgressions could be punished by ordering the malefactor's rum ration stopped for a period, a punishment that, according to C.S. Forester, was considered more dire by many sailors than a flogging. Navy rum was taken aboard in small barrels called "ankers". This overproof rum was diluted down to issue strength in a carefully supervised and guarded procedure as needed. The special cask of diluted rum, the "scuttlebutt" was one of several places on the ship that were under 24/7 guard by Marines. The Royal Navy maintained it's rum ration into the 1970s, iirc. The U.S. Navy also issued a daily rum ration, for similar reasons, but discontinued it rather earlier.
@christopherreed4723
@christopherreed4723 5 лет назад
As for the water on board, while it could become quite foul with algae etc., this generally only happened on long voyages, or if the cask was new, or "green". Water (or salted meat) kept in aged casks could last quite a long time before going bad. Most navies maintained large cooperages that manufactured and aged casks as well as storing used ones for re-issue to ships as they commissioned. An important and often overlooked precursor to the Battle of the Armada was a raid carried out by the English (under Sir Francis Drake, if memory serves) that targeted one of the principal cooperages supplying the Spanish Armada. A great deal of material was destroyed in the raid, including hundreds of barrels. As a result the Armada had to use many new-made, unaged barrels for their water and salted meat...which is one reason that by the time they engaged the English a significant percentage of their crews were sick, and consequently not giving their best performance. As far as I know, rum was not generally added to the daily water ration to disinfect it or make it keep longer. At least in the Royal Navy, the water ration was always separate from the rum ration.

Incase you're feeling rebellious, don't make this with a dark Jamaican rum, lol. It's gross and tastes burnt.

Without looking into it much further, I do know rum wasnt even invented until the 17th century, I think everything else is correct.

Interesting use of dark rum, I’d honestly try it if Utah state liquor stores carried good quality dark rum. Seriously though fuck Utah liquor laws.

Didn't you block all our lemons, meaning we had to switch to limes, thus giving birth to Brits being known as 'limeys'? Something like that.

yes, we should start saying that more often. We don't do it on the show because we want you guys to see the color and how the drink looks. But when making at home, definitely chill your glass if it doesn't have ice in it!
