My Favorite Drum Machine isn't a Drum Machine

My favourite drum machine is actually a drum synthesizer. The Vermona DRM1 MKIV has no pattern or beat making capabilites, it's simply an analogue synth... for drum sounds.
No memory. No complicated programming. Just hook it up, turn some knobs and make awesome sounds.
It needs to be paired with a DAW, MIDI keyboard or sequencer, or hooked up to your modular rig if you have the CV input version. But the interface is straightforward and tweaking sounds is a delight. Build in stereo panning, individual outs and send/returns. What more can you ask for?

Thanks. I've collected a few things over the years, some before prices started skyrocketing. I mostly buy used where I can. Nothing wrong with budget gear, you can make great music with almost anything.

Super cool demo. Thanks for taking your time. The various tones from clap are great! Would love to hear drum1+2 layered under the kick - probably THICK

Thanks. I tried to keep it reasonably short so I didn't delve into all the sounds deeply. But that clap is my favourite clap ever.

Thank you John, that was a really interesting walk through. This is a pretty capable tone generator and I can see why you enjoy using it so. I can remember using simple drum machine's back in the very early 80's and just trying to wring the very most you could out of the basic pre-sets in a 'less is more' kind of way. I also noticed that it is now discontinued, I wonder if this was possibly due to the semi conductor shortage that has affected synth and pedal manufacturers after Covid. Shame, but definitely hang on to this, it's pretty unique 😀👍

Yeah, 80's drum machines are fun, but very specific in their beats. Mixing the two is awesome. The DRM MK IV is still available: www.vermona.com/en/products/drums-percussion/product/drm1-mkiv-2/ It's the MK III That is discontinued.

@@EdgetoneStudios You're absolutely correct it is still available, my bad. I had a couple of preset drum machines. One sounded like a very basic Compu Rhythm but I can't remember the name of it and this was later replaced with a Boss Dr Rhythm 55 when they first came out. I am a guitarist but was in a synth band at the time around 1980 in the UK for a short while. You know, young and no money but full of ideas!

@@derosabike I didn't own any in the 80's but got to use a Yamaha RX5 at music school. I had one for a while before the new studio opened, but got rid of it when I purchased my Alpha Base. I was running out of places to set it up, but I kinda miss it.

I was looking into the MKIII version and really digged it. However, I got myself an Analog Rytm MK 2 from Elektron instead.Still looking like a really cool drums synth

If I can get past not having memory to hold even a couple of patches I might move forward on this one ...
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 11 месяцев назад
I think that is one of the features I most like about it. There is an immediacy to it that is lost on all my other synths since they all have patch memory.

Do you feel the kick isn’t quite powerful compared to the other sounds? I have a MK4 as well and just think it doesn’t cut though enough
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 8 месяцев назад
I don't know. I've gotten some pretty cool kick sounds out of it, though none quite as powerful as the Alpha Base had. Just don't expect it to be an 808.The kick is its own thing.

I just got my Vermona , do you think the Boss Re-20 pedal would be a good fit for it ? Thanks
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 11 месяцев назад
Sure. You can do some pretty cool effects with a space echo.
@teddyjones3652
@teddyjones3652 11 месяцев назад
@@EdgetoneStudiosthanks for reply , so would the pedal only be able to control one instrument ? As in I could only use it on the kick , or the clap etc , so would need multiple peddles to effect multiple instruments ? Thanks
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 11 месяцев назад
@@teddyjones3652 Yes, that's correct. With a Y insert cable you could connect one instrument through the pedal. If you got two, you could put the stereo outs through them and echo everything, but that might be a bit overwhelming. If you wanted to use it on multiple instruments, but not all, you would need a mixing board. Or if you're recording, you can just send each output to a different track and use plugins for fxs.

How much processing do u need to get the most out of it
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 8 месяцев назад
I think it sounds pretty wonderful as it is. The only processing I use is whatever fits the song, as I would do with any sound source. Any of EQ, Compression, Delay, Reverb could be used sparingly (or agressively if that's what you like).
